Learn how to make a successful campaign!!

The Advertising tacktikPAK served as my guide when trying to understand advertising. This module helped me understand how advertisements work, what makes a successful advertisement and what attracts consumers. It also gives great insight into what makes a successful campaign. Thanks to Berman’s guidance in this volume I definitely feel confident to pull off a successful advertising campaign. Margo Berman is without a doubt a genius. Just look at her credentials and her contributions into advertising and you’ll be unable to argue this.

I also recommend checking out the other modules on the tactikPAK series (especially if you’re in the communication’s field!). Whether you’re a student looking for information, needing guidance or simply looking to enhance the knowledge you already have, each volume goes a long way in helping out. Each chapter breaks down information thoroughly, it’s easy to understand and at the end of every chapter there is a cool interactive quiz to help reinforce what you have just read. I have all of them; they are amazing!

I Love these tactikPaks because they help so much in my classes and in my future career. Great quizzes that help and the content is super easy to follow and read. Get it for sure if you are in the advertising, copywriting, design, PR field. You won't regret it. Not only will you use it now during your classes, but you will go back to it when you are working in the real field.

Stranger in a Strange Land meets Gulliver's Travels Stunning. Extraordinary.

An extraordinary book. The main character is a young man on the verge of adulthood, striving to grow beyond the bounds of his existence. His is a world of mystical and mythological existence. Yet he strives for more, driven upward through the boundaries of the world. Spec's innate goodness and naivete, his almost lemming-like instinctive striving is what is best in all of us, defining who we are as human beings.
I cannot begin to describe the stunning worlds that Soll has created, societies that mock and reflect our world, the best and the worst of it. That stresses the innate striving we all have for love and comfort, the sacrifices we are willing to make to achieve those ends. I realize I seem to be babbling on. But this is an extraordinary book, combining Stranger in a Strange Land with Gulliver's Travels. A truly talented writer. I think I m in the presence of genius.

Imaginative and Innovative

"Scorched" by Michael Soll is a gritty dystopian novel that begins with the survival of humanity underground after a solar flare incinerated the atmosphere and baked the Earth, killing all life. In the Hive deep underground Spec and his friend Cotta tunnel through the dirt looking for clay and insects everyday; their lives routine and empty. When the story opens Spec who dreams about exploring beyond the confines of the Hive ventures into an Ancient Tunnel, accompanied by his friend as well as frustrated when Koalin a young breeder tags along. In an adventure that will take them upwards towards the surface, the three will find their life of ignorance transformed, and the changes not always better as they discover other more enlightened colonies.

Michael Soll brings to life three underground civilizations - the Hive, Newbury and the NaNas- all restricted in some way by prejudice, ignorance or a lack of tolerance. In the violence, cannibalism and injustices so prevalent in the three societies the author creatively sends clear philosophical reflections on human beliefs and perceptions. I found the story imaginative, thought-provoking and intriguing, but not very realistic.

Although the events of the story flow quickly, there is a loss of continuity when the narration abruptly changes from Spec to Joey and then to Valasca, although I believe this is to give insight into a Newbury and NaNa viewpoint. The story is action-packed especially with their escape from the Hive as well as the violence and war that breaks out between the NaNas and the Newburyians, but there is a lack in background detail as well as no gradual buildup in tension and suspense. Romance inexplicably blossoms between Spec and Kaolin, and Valasca and Cotta but without any indication why.

Spec is the sixteen year old Hive dweller who wants to escape his mundane and restrictive existence, to explore the tunnels and find a route to the mythical surface. He's determined, a risk-taker who's restless, wanting a change. Cotta, Spec's friend is a follower, easily accepting Spec's decision to search for a way through the tunnels. After meeting Valasca his allegiance changes, adopting the NaNa lifestyle, and their warrior fighting skills. Like Spec, Kaolin feels constrained by the Hive culture and wants the freedom and independence to make her own decisions. She rebels in Newbury and resents the NaNa way of life. Although I found the characters interesting their personalities and motivations were often unclear.

I liked "Scorched" finding it innovative, imaginative and its messages about society very relevant even today. I believe Michael Soll's writing skills will mature with each new novel and that he is a writer to be watched in future. I would rate this book slightly higher than a 3.0 if the scale allowed

I'm not big on fiction, but when LA started having crazy rainstorms, I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to curl up on the couch with a good read. This book entertained me for hours--the story is full of vivid details! Michael Soll is an up and coming talented writer who knows how to crank out a page turner. I finished this in one day and I can't wait to read more of his work! Definitely a fan.

Agree With the Group---It Beats Thinking

This author takes Gustave LeBon's work on crowds and expands it to groups other than lower class people aroused by demagogues. He writes that groups (he calls them "crowds", after LeBon) are found in all milieu of society, and are comprised of people who want/need to have others do their thinking for them. It's a complicated world, so why not tune in to any source of partly-correct and limited information that "seems right" and go with that?

He gets into psychology, stating that people who invest uncritically in a "crowd" show latent infancy, with the crowd serving as the substitute guiding parent. He maintains that one crowd ousting another results only in the winning crowd imposing (with mixed results) its world-view, limited as it is in scope and truth, on everyone. I read 3/4 of the book, since the remainder seemed to be elaboration that I did not need.

Pragmatic Psychopharmacology

Having taught courses in drugs and behavior for over 30 years, and also having served for 15 years as a law enforcement officer, I found One Toke to be an exceptionally well written book aimed at educating teens about marijuana. As other reviewers have pointed out, this is NOT a guide to marijuana use nor does the book advocate for the legalization of marijuana. Rather, the book provides scientifically based information about marijuana, its use, and the consequences of its use among teens. Taking the pragmatic (and realistic) approach that many teens will experiment with and regularly use marijuana, Aronoff covers the history, pharmacology, legal, and social/family dynamics of the decision to use the drug. This decision, as the author points out, is not always a rational one. It is often based on natural adolescent curiosity and propensity to engage in risky behavior, or from social pressure from peers. In any case, this engaging book provides teens who ultimately decide to use marijuana – and their parents – with objective information on how to do so in a manner that minimizes risks to self and others. And it raises the important question of what constitutes the best approach to minimizing marijuana use among teens. Whether one advocates educating and informing teens about marijuana or total abstinence, history clearly shows that “hard-nosed” criminalization of marijuana has been an abject failure. I hope this book will stimulate open and informed discussion on the topic.

"High" Five!

Such a perfect book to use for parents that want to talk to teens about safe pot smoking! It's easy to read (both literally because it has a larger font and figuratively) and the illustrations add a nice touch. I would definitely recommend this book to any parent that isn't sure how to go about talking to their kids about pot smoking.

In this incredibly timely book, Author Marc Aronoff proposes a different conversation about Marijuana and Marijuana use. It is not a book endorsing the illegal use of the drug, rather, it’s an open plea to realize that millions of American’s already avail themselves of the substance, both legally and illegally. Instead of making blanket statements regarding abstinence and avoidance, he states, “This is about the reality of smoking pot and harm reduction.”
That is it in a nutshell, and the thought is both provoking and smart. People, young and old alike, are utilizing pot. State after state is bringing legislation to the fore regarding marijuana, either the recreational legality of it or the concept of legalizing the medical use of it. The landscape has changed, and so must the conversation. How do parents face this new, obvious, world when preparing our teenagers? Aronoff has some ideas…. And they just may change your mind about a lot of things.
Imbued with science, facts and verifiable studies, the author lends credence to his arguments and the questions he asks. The use of marijuana is deeply explored, from the ages most smokers fist try it, the whys behind it, and even the reason most first time tokkers don’t really get high after that initial try. Links offer further research and places to continue the dialog.
“One Toke: A Survival Guide for Teens” is an indispensable book for both parents and teenagers alike. It offers facts and reality, something modern families’ desperately need when making decisions and trying to navigate waters filled with conjecture. A great read and addition to your library.

Good read, kind of short

Good read, but it seemed more like an outline for what could've been a much longer book. I found the stories of the duplicate crews interesting. The expectation that I had for all the crews would be that they would pretty much all act the same. However, the author paints them as all being distinct individuals, despite all being clones of their flesh and blood selves. I'd like to see a follow on book for this.

Just when I think Tim Miller can't get any creepier.....

Tim Miller is all kinds of creepy. Well, his stories are I should say. I read one and I think "Man, that is effed up!" or " Holy $h*t that's scary as hell!" But then, I pick up the next book and he's taken my expectations to a whole new level. I always think that with the latest one, there's no way he can top it and then he does. I think he does it on purpose. I think he's as calculating as some of the miscreants that he writes about. How else would you be able to explain the new levels of creeptastic horrors that seem to come forth with each new story? Keep `em coming Mr. Miller.

Okay, Tim Miller isn't like Marty McDougal. When Marty released his debut horror novel 'Tunnel of Doom', the reviews were not good. In fact, there were 5 reviews that were so bad, Marty and his horror movie director wannabe brother kidnap those that left the horrible reviews. But these aren't the first people they've kidnapped. No. These two along with their mother are quite used to grabbing people off the street, taking them back to their house, and doing all kinds of unspeakable things to them. These unspeakable things are the stuff that make us lock our doors at night and are the same stuff Tim Miller thinks about when he's eating his footloops in the morning.

Our main character, April was one of those reviewers. Now, she needs to figure out how to escape the clutches of this hillbilly family while they slowly and painfully make their way through the five people they kidnapped. Also, April's father is an FBI agent and he's going to do whatever he can to find his daughter, even if they means traveling to the town of Browneye, Texas and dealing with a town that might just be as dangerous as the family that has his daughter.

This book has lots of blood, guts, and torture, but is also campy at times with a lot of humor. One of my favorite lines from the book is:

“Is that legal?” Marty asked.
“God damn right it’s legal. Jesus H. Christ hisself wrote it into the constitution!”

I've read plenty of Tim Miller and this book seemed to follow a pretty regular pattern for lot of his novels. 'A group of people find a strange Texas town in the middle of nowhere and fight for their lives'. However, Tim flipped that plot of its head towards the end when April.....I can't say anymore. Just know that it is crazy. It is something so unheard of. It is something that is going to keep me reading on with the next book in the series.

THERESA SCHWEGEL was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. A Loyola University graduate, she received an MFA in screenwriting at Chapman University. The author of four novels, her debut, Officer Down, won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel and was shortlisted for the Anthony Award.

Well worth your time and attention

THE GOOD BOY makes demands of its readers. Author Theresa Schwegel drops you in the middle of a quietly simmering pot of domestic disaster straight from the jump. Then she works her way backwards in fits and starts and drops as the back story moves, somewhat at a snail’s pace, to catch up with the very immediate, suspenseful present.

Pete Murphy is a Chicago police officer who is assigned to the K9 unit, a position that he considers to be a punishment as opposed to a promotion. There is a reason for this: Murphy was part of a street hassle that also involved a bit of scandal that in turn led to a somewhat public embarrassment. The resulting fallout led to Murphy and his family having to give up their mortgaged home and “downsizing” to a well-used rental in a less desirable neighborhood. His family is less than able to stand the strain. Wife Sarah has some definite issues of her own --- some understandable, others not so much --- and spends a good deal of the book standing on Murphy’s last nerve. Teenage daughter McKenna is teetering into the world of full-blown adolescence, a difficult enough transformation without the additional uprooting and incidental publicity that arose from her father’s situation.

However, it is 11-year-old Joel who feels the brunt of the family’s emotional trauma. Joel is brilliant, possessed of a remarkable memory while exhibiting some signs that he might be on the autism spectrum, though this is never specifically addressed. Then there is Butch, Murphy’s canine partner, who is undoubtedly the most emotionally stable of the ensemble. Murphy and Butch surely have an emotional bond, but it is Joel who is truly attached to the dog.

So it is that two things occur in rapid order in THE GOOD BOY. The first is that Murphy’s participation in a routine traffic stop puts him back into the very unfavorable spotlight of publicity while reopening public memory of his involvement in the prior incident that resulted in his fall from grace. The other is that McKenna’s association with bad companions --- you can see it coming for several chapters --- culminates in her sneaking out of the house to go to what used to be called a “wild party.” Joel, who is concerned for his older sister, takes Butch and follows her. When several trouble points converge and things go badly wrong, Joel and Butch find themselves on the run through the mean streets of Chicago, as Joel attempts to reach the one adult in a position of power who will listen to him. It is this sojourn across several miles of the city that forms the meat and heart of THE GOOD BOY.

Joel is not what one would call street-smart in the classic sense, but he knows enough to get by. His greatest strength, however, is that he looks after Butch at his own expense; Butch, of course, returns the favor, thus the two of them are able to traverse the city by hook and crook as Joel attempts to reach his unlikely destination. Meanwhile, Joel’s parents are understandably frantic, even as the family threatens to capsize under the pressure of their other problems. Murphy begins a desperate search through the darkest and seediest recesses of the city, pursuing a slim trail that he hopes will lead to his son, little knowing that he actually may be putting himself and his loved ones into even greater jeopardy.

THE GOOD BOY is reminiscent of a number of tales --- THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY (the book, not the Disney movies) and The Warriors (the movie, not the book) --- but is very much its own story. While uneven in spots, those portions of the narration dealing with Joel and Butch as they sleep rough and live dangerously on the streets of modern-day Chicago make the novel well worth your time and attention.

Boy, dog, amazing journey

Take your pick, the good boy of the book’s title is 11 year-old Joel Murphy or his K9 companion Butchie, a 100-pound German shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix. Both are fully realized creations that grab your affection as much as your attention.

Strong characters portrayed with all the complexity of real people make “The Good Boy” your good read.

This is the story of Joel and his Chicago family, his police officer father Pete, who racks up a dubious history of bending the law as much as enforcing it. (Butch is Pete’s canine partner.) There is Joel’s mother Sarah, who is burdened by a too-heavy weight of grief, mistrust and self-doubt. Joel’s sister is McKenna. It’s her teenage rebelliousness that ignites the story. Joel is at the center of the story. He’s an observant kid who inhabits a world beyond his years, someone who inhales (and catalogues) information as if it were the breath of life. And Butchie, a furry fury when need be.

But of all the characters, the most sharply etched is an overripe pole dancer who has trouble keeping her balance named Elexus who dances, yaks and clamors her way right into your heart with her resolute individuality. None of what she says is quotable here but the oaths and expletives that fly out of her mouth ring true with logic and astonishing equanimity.

A story as gritty as Chicago’s underbelly gives the book its traction, its power to take hold and not let go. Joel with Butchie in tow follows McKenna to a teen bash where illegal substances and intruding gang members stir up a confrontation that explodes into violence. Butch, trained to be a canine enforcer lunges in with sudden, disastrous results. Boy and dog flee. They take to the streets of Chicago. It’s an act of courage, an odyssey that Joel understands will lead him and Butchie away from home and safety. Stuffed in Joel’s backpack is a dog-eared (Joel wonders about the term) copy of “White Fang.” The book becomes the boy’s touchstone.

A story about a boy and his dog, this is a thriller for adults only, intense and ultimately hugely satisfying in its narrative force. Joel and Butchie take a number of wrong turns in their journey through a Chicago wasteland. Schwegel never falters as she drives straight and true to the novel’s powerful conclusion.

Runaways

Hard to improve on the New York Times review of this book. Ms. Schwegel can put her characters into stress early in her books, keep them there by their own machinations, and make them rescue themselves in as realistic a fashion as can any mystery or crime writer currently on the shelf at the airport. She has more patience with her characters than they have with themselves. Normally I don't like animal stories, and I don't like stories about run away kids. Even so, I liked this book a great deal. Go figure. O.W. Holmes
