a must-read for plantar fasciitis sufferers !

If you have plantar fasciitis, you need to read this book ! It includes easy medical explanations about the underlying cause of PF as well as multiple effective strategies on how to get rid of it. I especially like the way it explains how PF is related to trigger points and how these need to be deactivated first mechanically before stretching. In order to do so, the pictures showing the trigger points on the calf and the foot are very helpful. Also the instructions are usually very easy to follow, but you might want to watch the videos on the website www.pfsurvivalguide.com as well.
I developed some shoulder pain a couple of years ago but i thought i just had sore muscles. But it turned out they were trigger points; so i purchased the Fenix Rehab System. It's a blue wooden board with different holes on it and it comes with rubber digits you put on these holes. And by pressing on the part of your body with trigger points, you can deactivate them.
I had long forgotten about this tool i kept in a drawer until i read William Prowse's book ! After 2 weeks of daily session on my calf and feet, the pain has dramatically decreased. You need to drink a lot just after to flush the toxins. I also like the spoon, the cutting board and the foot roller which bring me the most relief
My PF is still there (i had it for 15 months) but i feel i am heading in the right direction now and the end (of the tunnel) is near.
After trying physical therapy (useless), acupuncture (pointless), ESWT (limited results; i found out by reading this book i had the wrong type ! the difference between radial and shockwave therapy should be mentioned in the book instead of the website), frozen can of beans (helpful but not conclusive), cold and hot bath (helps blood circulation but doesn't heal PF), this book is by far the best tool i have found. I strongly recommend it !

Good advice from someone who has been through it all himself and come out the other side

If you have been suffering with chronic plantar fasciitis and have tried many of the recommended treatments (e.g physio, stretching, icing, orthotics, popping pills etc) without relief and you are looking for some advice from someone who has been through the same pain and come out the other side then definitely get this book.

There is so much information online about plantar fasciitis, but it seems most of the advice is from people who have not had a truly severe case and stretching calf and foot muscles, doing a bit of icing and finding some decent orthotics has managed to give them lasting relief. This was not the case for me. Eight months ago when this horrible injury began, I visited a physio and got some deep tissue massage, tried taping and did lots of stretching as recommended. I spent money on endless orthotics out of desperation - eventually I visited a podiatrist who made a pair that contained a groove where the plantar fascia was and they gave me the most relief. They were expensive but I'd already tried endless shop bought ones as well as having them moulded to my feet at a specialist sports shop (they were the worst of the lot as they were rock solid and dug painfully in to my arch). I also got a cortisone shot but this did nothing for me. I saw an orthapedic foot specialist who referred me to have MRI's of foot, spine and even head(!) as he wanted to check their was nothing going on higher up in the body such as nerve entrapment - at that point I had severe pain in my calf as well and had lost a lot of muscle. My GP prescribed various painkillers but again, no relief. When I tried stretching it just aggravated it more. Eventually I had to leave my teaching job as couldn't keep up the physical demands and was on crutches.

I was drawn to read this book as the author had been through 3 years of a severe case and had tried all the things I had already tried without relief and then managed to self treat his own case (with hard work and perseverance and a bit of help from a few treatments such as ESWT). It was interesting reading his view that stretching without dealing with the 'trigger points' first will only worsen the injury. I have been working on the soft tissue release he suggests and although I'm still a long way off, it has helped to release some of the pain. I'm still using crutches when out and about but can weight bear much more easily than before - I used to have severe pain with every step and now the pain is much milder. I have been rolling my foot on a spikey ball which definitely helps (you can buy them cheaply on the internet - fitness mad do a 7cm one which is great). I haven't personally tried the scraping yet - seems quite harsh (!), but the soft tissue massage is helping to break down the scar tissue. I'm exploring the possibility of getting ESWT and am hoping to get it on the NHS (I'm in England) but we are way behind on this - my local hospital is the only one that provides this treatment on the NHS and the machine has just broken!! I am glad that the author talks about the difference between radial and shock wave therapy as a lot of clinics say that they offer ESWT when really it is radial therapy so I will make sure I ask them about this.

The chapter on diet is also interesting. A healthy diet with lots of foods that contain high levels of vitamins, protein and good fats is clearly important for the body to have the best chance of healing. I am more skeptical about nutritional supplements however. While I have been taking omega 3 fish oil supplements as they have strong medical evidence behind them and many solid medical trials have prooved their effectiveness, many supplements do not have solid medical evidence to back up their claims - systematic enzymes included. Many websites marketing these will give you a 'scientific' explanation behind them but tests suggest they cannot be absorbed enough by the blood for them to actually make a difference (there is a website called 'Science based pharmacy' which talks about this in detail -

While many people have tried them and claim that they have helped them recover, I will remain skeptical until I find a solid and reliable medical trial (and not just ones that are done by the companies that are marketing them!)

I am hoping that in time I will be able to move on to stretching again without aggravating the injury, but for now I am continuing to apply the massage techniques until I feel ready. Over all, I would definitely recommend this book. If anything, it has helped me to view the situation more positively and to know that their is light at the end of the tunnel as the author went through a very severe case and managed to treat himself after many other treatments failed.

See a doctor first

I am changing my review after seeing the doctor. I had seen other doctors in the six years I have had the problem, but unfortunately, I still have the problem. I was so fed up with doctors, I decided to treat myself and turned to books and the internet. But, I still was not getting better.

Recently, I found a good foot doctor. After Xrays and MRIs, it turns out I have a more advanced form of plantar fascitis called plantar fasciotis. Since I have had it for six years, the damage is more severe and my doctor said there are tears in the plantar fascia and it is not a good idea to roll anything over the plantar fascia or scrape. I had also bruised myself by trying to do myofascial release. He said my body is not ready for that yet.

I need to start with the boot at night and taping for now.

There is a lot of good information here and I am sure people can be helped by this information, but I advise everyone to see a doctor first before you try and treat yourself.

There is no mention of my favorite one, phenylracetam

I was shocked to see all the positive reviews. They must have come from friends and relatives or people who were being introduced to nootropics. First criticism... the author covers only a small portion of the nootropics available. There is no mention of my favorite one, phenylracetam. Generally much of the advice offered is almost condescending it's so simplistic and obvious.
I'm haven't checked out his website nor seen his newsletter... hopefully there is more updated information. You can find tons more online but unfortunately information is not centralized which makes for a fair amount of work. I wish this book had provided that consolidation, but it fell way short. Pretty disappointed.

Sound Advices that Work!

Woowww. This is a really great book for both experts and newbies. Everybody knows the brain is probably the most complex product of evolution and novice might get lost in too much science or technical jargon. The author does an amazing job in explaining the brain and the power of brain supplements in a simple and easy way. It gives good and solid reason on which supplements really work and why. At the end there is also a plan to improve your mental performance...and let me tell you....you will get amazing results! Thanks Brian for your work

Ruth Duskin Feldman is an award-winning writer and educator. With Diane E. Papalia and Sally Wendkos Olds, she coauthored the fourth and the seventh through the twelfth editions of Human Development and the eighth through the twelfth editions of A Child's World. She also is coauthor, with Dr. Papalia, Harvey Sterns and Cameron J. Camp, of Adult Development and Aging. A former teacher, she has developed educational materials for all levels from elementary school through college and has prepared ancillaries to accompany the Papalia-Olds books. She is author or coauthor of four books addressed to general readers, including Whatever Happened to the Quiz Kids? Perils and Profits of Growing Up Gifted. She has written for numerous newspapers and magazines and has lectured extensively and made national and local media appearances throughout the United States on education and gifted children. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, where she was graduated with highest distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Gabriela Alicia Martorell was born in Seattle, Washington, but moved as a toddler to Guatemala. At eight, she returned to the United States and lived in Northern California until leaving for her undergraduate training at the University of California, Davis. After obtaining her B.S. in Psychology, she earned her Ph.D. in Developmental and Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Gabriela has taught courses in introductory psychology, research methods, lifespan human development, infant development, child development, adolescent development, adulthood and aging, cultural issues in psychology, evolutionary psychology, developmental psychopathology, and Capstone community-based learning courses in Early Childhood Education and Aging. She is committed to teaching, mentoring, and advising. She is currently conducting research on attachment processes in immigrant Latino/a adolescents which is funded by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, and is Co-Investigator for a National Science Foundation grant focused on student retention and success in science, technology, engineering, and math.

As a professor, Diane E. Papalia has taught thousands of undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her bachelor’s degree, majoring in psychology, from Vassar College and both her master’s degree in child development and family relations and her Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from West Virginia University. She has published numerous articles in such professional journals as Human Development, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, Sex Roles, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and Journal of Gerontology. Most of these papers have dealt with her major research focus, cognitive development from childhood through old age.

much cheaper than my bookstore!

For whatever reason, my campus bookstore does not sell the paperback version of this book. Even renting it from my bookstore was more expensive than just buying this book from this seller. I had another student ask where I got it. There is NOTHING different between this book and the hardback version the other students have in my class. Page numbers are the same, word-for-word everything is the same. The seller even rushed the shipping at no additional cost to me when I wrote to them that I needed it for a class. All in all, a happy purchase.

RENTER BEWARE!

I made the mistake of renting this textbook from apex_media in an attempt to save money. It seemed like a great idea since renting was only $51.75 as compared to $136.99 for purchase. Unfortunately the copy they sent me had been heavily used and the binding began to come apart by the end of the semester. This text was for an online course so it was never transported in a book bag or mishandled in any way. There was nothing I could do because it was past the 30 day return window when it started coming apart. After my class was completed I promptly returned the text. Now I have received an email from Amazon notifying me that I have been charged an additional $171.30 and they are sending the book back to me. Not only have I been forced to buy a book I no longer need, but I have been charged $223.05 for a used book that I could have gotten new for $136.99! I really wish this would have worked out considering that I will need over $700 worth of textbooks for next semester. Now I know it is better to buy and resale than try and rent from Amazon.

textbook is great....

The textbook itself is great however the digital version is just a copy and therefore you cannot change the size of the font, which is very smAll. It was a struggle to read for my class each week and would not recommend the kindle version of this book.

Parents, teachers, counselors, school administrators, school boards, even students, and concerned citizens will be agitated, but all for very different reasons. My goal is mostly to irritate into action the latter of this group--concerned citizens...by telling true stories, presenting crucial questions, and exposing the resource drains scattered about most schools. This is not an ivory-tower-reinvent-the-human-brain-even-though-I've never-taught-real-students-to-justify-my-existence-at-my-university-type book. What you will read are real-life anecdotes from the trenches of education, not the latest educational bandwagons we should be jumping on and why they are so great. You will hopefully come to understand the real problems that face educational institutions, some that many teachers may not even realize.

An insightful look at the problems of the public school system from the inside.

We all know the public education system is a mess. What most of us DONT know is why.

This is a very insightful look at many of the problems from the perspective of someone that actually worked as a teacher. The barriers they face, the uphill climb, and the issues that are only getting worse.

As with everything the government gets involved in, things get worse. This is a must read for anyone interested in the issues our public school system has.

Fast review: If you liked Anne McCaffery's Pegasus, or Tower and the Hive series, you'll love Mindstorm.
Long review:
Koepp has a gift for writing great sci-fi that sucks you into the story, and Mindstorm doesn't disappoint. The characters are likeable, and are complex, have issues, and grow throughout the story. The two main characters are summed up pretty well in the "back of the book" text, so I wont elaborate on them here much. The nicest thing is that most stories about telepaths and such focus on the most powerful. This story focuses on one of the least powerful, and how even though someone may seem insignificant, they still have special, useful talents that can save the day.
The other major players in the story are the alien races that are at war on the planet Ologo. Koepp does a really good job with aliens. They're a very different culture, nicely fleshed out, and the reasons for the war make sense. I'd say more on that topic, but can't without getting into spoilers...
Couldn't put it down, want more in this story universe; Five stars!

Unique and exciting.

Two telepathic people from Haidar are commissioned to help a troubled planet parlay for peace and in so doing find a war of their own.

Koepp certainly walks the tightrope of science fiction and fantasy in this exciting tale.

Not only does Mindstorm have an array of interesting creatures and a galaxy of unique planets that they inhabit, but the elaborate system of telepathy tunnels the reader into a fragile landscape of mind and emotion. An exciting journey into and through deep and interesting fictional characters.

An excellent read, Mindstorm: Parlay at Ologo brings humor in the midst of drama, and passion in the midst of prejudice. I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

I believe that many people have no knowledge, education or proper information about this disease, just like me before I read this great book on the matter.
The author gave a good insight about the history of the Ebola and its origins.
There are effective strategies that can save you in case you come in contact with this severe and deadly virus.
I had no idea how people caught it in the first place, but this books explaines it very thorough, I now know where it first begins.
The author talks of the stages of the disease and breaks trough the ignorance that people have and therefore spread fear in other people.

Don't waste your time or money on this. You can find out more about coping with C. Diff. from a Google search than you can in this book. Her tips to meditate or try acupuncture really take away from any credibility she may have had, which is not much to begin with since she is only a patient and not a medical professional. This is a serious disease with a frustrating recovery. Please do more responsible research for yourself than this.

My mother has C. Difficile and has tried every know 'DRUG" that's been used for this with no success. This book presented some holistic ways that we are now trying and hopefully going to see some difference for her.
