Many of these first 10 episodes are based on some very real incidents that happened during my days as a front desk clerk in a little mid-priced hotel. Sure, a lot of stuff's made up purely from my crazy imagination, but there were 5:00 AM donuts--delicious fresh from the bakery. Henry the Donut Guy--not real, but I wouldn't have argued one bit if he had been! Among the many other true-to-life items that appear at the Roche Hotel are a popcorn machine, a Muzak that never played at the right volume, at least one "lady of the night", and a dead body.

The Roche Hotel

Jane's husband left her for a hot blonde wanna be. Well good for Jane, now she can get a real man to stand by her. But first she needs to get a job to keep paying those bills. She comes by the Roche Hotel and thinks she has found the right job for her.

When she get the job she ends up meeting Henry. At that first delivery is when it all starts for her, and lets hope she can keep things together. What Jane did was compare Henry and her ex a bit, and it was okay until she over did it on the comparing's. A few comparing's is fine, but Jane would compare to anything she could. Otherwise I liked it, and found it funny. But who doesn't care compare the current guy to their last one?

Any who... this isn't a long story but it was packed with enough detail to make you enjoy it and feel as if it was a bit longer than it really was. There is a relationship with Jane and Henry, it wasn't super long but it was nice to read and did some good for Jane. You also get an insight of her relationship with her mom that will tug at you.

The things that happen at the hotel were fun to real the staff really is quirky. You will laugh, and when you think you are done laughing, something else will happen and get you going again. This really is a fun and romantic quick read for anyone. Or if you want a break from what you are reading, you should get your hands on this.

I've read other books by Mysti and they are just as awesome to read.

This book made me stay up late and then cradle it in my arms as I fell asleep – just wanted one more chapter… very engaging read with loveable characters, even the one with the loin cloth.

Could have used more story.

I've never read a book like this and I didn't really get it. It was like a serial podcast, but not enough meat to really feel like an 'episode'. While the situations were funny and interesting, and the writing was done very well, it felt very incomplete. I would have like to have seen a short story for each episode, instead of what felt like an outline.

I listened to the audio version and Angie Hickman did a great job. There wasn't much to go off of in terms or character so it felt like Hickman really brought some personality to the story. The pacing was great and her speech was clear.

Could have used more story.

A well written and enthralling story. One of the reasons I enjoy fantasy.

I love the characters and their growth and development. I believe that Rebecca Shelley does a fantastic job taking you into an amazing place where dragons and riders fight for love, evil and survival. My only criticism is that the books are short. But the storylines blend together so well that it certainly did not stop me from reading them all!

PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

Absolutely a waste of time and money!! This is NOT A MANUAL THAT WILL HELP WITH THE NRP EXAM!! This is some kind of written summary that a fellow RN wrote in her own words with bad grammar. It is a very rough and incomplete brief summary of neonatal resuscitation (about 12 paragraphs), and it also briefly covers PALS in another rough fashion. I put this book on my kindle to help with the NRP test on my laptop as my employer does not have enough manuals for the staff, and I really didn't want to purchase the real manual for 40-50$. The very basic non-medical information provided did not cover any of the content on the exam

Not your usual suspense novel

Dr. Morgan Snow, the protagonist of this first installment in M.J. Rose's new series of Butterfield Institute novels, is a perceptive therapist and a newly divorced mother, an expert in sexuality with, at least in recent years, more theoretical knowledge of the subject than hands-on experience. She is troubled still by an unusually sad childhood--details of which drip into the narrative of The Halo Effect--from which she emerged scarred with abandonment issues. Morgan is a fully realized, multi-dimensional, wholly likeable character. And she is an unlikely amateur sleuth, which is part of the charm of Rose's new series: criminal suspense has not found a home before in the halls of a sex therapy clinic.

Morgan, who has worked with the police in past cases, becomes involved again when a serial killer begins murdering prostitutes and posing them, in death, in a series of religiously significant, grotesque tableaux. Dr. Snow numbers many prostitutes--both incarcerated and not--among her patients, so the crimes are of especial concern for her. But what is most alarming is the recent disappearance of one of her favorites: call girl Cleo Thane has enjoyed an almost Mayflower-Madamish level of success but may have put her career and person in jeopardy by writing a tell-nearly-all book about her high-powered clients.

The Halo Effect is not your usual suspense novel. Not only is the occupation of its principal sleuth unconventional, but Rose's writing is somehow similarly unexpected. She eschews hackneyed expression while bathing her subjects in rich description. See, for example, her oblique description of the (sub-)eponymous Butterfield Institute: "There is a small brass plaque on the outside of the building, identifying it but giving little else away: The Butterfield Institute. The black cursive letters are etched deeply into the metal plate. Run your fingers over them and you feel the edges pushing into your flesh. Could you cut your skin on those edges and draw blood? Probably not, but even if you did, none of us inside could offer more than a Band-Aid."

As must be obvious by now, I liked Rose's book very much. And I am eager to read the second installment in the series, which will reportedly be released in April of 2005--farther off than I should like.

Not quite there mix of eroticism and suspense

Psychologist and sex therapist Morgan Snow's favorite client is wealthy prostitute Cleo Thane who has recently sold a tell-all book. When Cleo vanishes and a serial killer begins dressing prostitutes as nuns and ritually murdering them, Morgan decides to investigate. Of course, she can't tell the police about the confidences Cleo shared with her in therapy, but she can use what she learned, what she knows about people, and what she discovers in Cleo's manuscript to help her.

Morgan goes undercover at the club which serves as a front for Cleo's prostitution ring. Pretending to be a temporary replacement for the missing Cleo, Morgan meets with Cleo's regular clients--the ones written up in her book and with the most to lose if their secrets are revealed. Could one of these wealthy and powerful men be behind the murders? Meanwhile, Morgan struggles with her own issues--a recently ended marriage, a daughter who seeks to follow Morgan's mother's career in acting--a career that destroyed her mother, and a too-sexy police officer who just might be using his attractiveness to get at secrets that Morgan must protect.

I could imagine the editors reading this book proposal and getting excited. Sex worker, check. Has to go undercover as a prostitute, check. Weird serial killer, check. Strong writing ability, check. It's all here, but for me, at least, it doesn't hang together as well as I had hoped. I had several problems with this book. First, the mystery is too obvious. That's not always bad because it can increase the suspense when the reader knows the killer and the protagonist doesnt, but in this case, it made Morgan seem stupid. Second, author M. J. Rose held back on the eroticism. Rather than combining the best of eroticism and suspense, THE HALO EFFECT comes a bit short on both counts.

M. J. Rose can string words together and create characters and a story. I'll look forward to getting my hands on more books by her. For me, though, this one fell a bit short of my hopes.

2.5--okay writing, interesting premise

This was a mostly enjoyable read, the first book in a thriller series, although M. J. Rose's voice is always problematic for me. In some books it grates so much that I have to stop reading, but I was able to get through this one.

The heroine/narrator spends an awful lot of time in early chapters explaining herself to the reader--and not all of it is relevant to the story. The heroine also does some rather stupid things which mostly seem to be more for the author's convenience in moving the plot along rather than a genuine outgrowth of her character and motivations. But the story starts cranking after awhile, and there's an interesting hook up between the heroine and another character. I wound up enjoying it enough to buy the next book in the series.

However, Ms. Rose clearly did not do sufficient forensic research on blood coagulation. Perhaps only a forensic nerd like myself would give a darn. If I could give this a 2.5 I would.

A very RECOMMENDED short story to enjoy your spare time!

From the first page, I knew I'm gonna love this flash fiction! The opening made me wondering where the story would goes, and the story went AMAZING!

I had a fast reading, enjoying the story, and I wish there were more pages. When I read Revolting Youth eps 1,my heart beated fast just like Luko's. Phew, it was a hard moment seeing your father and best friend being tortured. Yeah, I hate Mr. Hujjat as well, how could a teacher be so cruel?

I like the twists. The ending of this episode surprised me! When I reached the last paragraphs, I was like, "Wait, I knew these names. Yes! They are characters from ..."
Wew, then I read the Author's Note and it is clear now. I eager to know what happens next! Good job for the Author! :)

When I started reading this short story I was instantly hooked. The descriptions that are given throughout are fantastic and although I want to tell you more about this book I feel this would spoil it for you.

The author has managed to describe the feelings of the young man and what he is going through during a time of war fantastically. This has provoked thoughts for me already of how lucky we are and what these children and families go through on a daily basis. It had me thinking that their choices are more for survival and not actually what they really want, but they are forced to make these decision through fear.

This is an author I will be following and really can't wait for more books. It's been a while since I have read such a gripping series of books from one author and H J Lawson has managed to switch me back to reading.

It is really killing me not telling more of the story but as I said I wouldn't want to spoil the plot for you.

I hope you give this book a read and I'm sure you will in no way be disappointed.

If you haven't read any of her books... I mean, what are you waiting for??

This is one of those short stories that are too short because they make you think it is the beginning of an incredible novel, but then it ends and leaves you wanting more... Yeah, the deception...

But please, don't misunderstand me because I really liked it. The narration is great and it has a lot of action and the characters were very well constructed.

Something that I really loved is the reference to characters from another book by this author -wich I won't say because of the spoilers- and I'm quite sure if you have enjoyed her previous books, you'll love this short story too.

But if you haven't read any of her books... I mean, what are you waiting for??

A strong first novel

The debut novel of Señor Jones is an enjoyable and rollicking journey for the reader as they follow the hapless Renly on his journey out into the world beyond his lonely computer in MIT. The narrative flows well throughout as Renly explores the world of the ghosts and the broader universe of cyber entities created within human software systems. The protagonist’s painful-to-observe awkwardness leads the reader through a well-paced narrative that keeps you turning the page whilst giving you insights into the metaphysics of being a sentient and soul-possessing creature born of advanced computing and the societal evolution that emerges as a result. I particularly enjoyed the historical backstory of this world, echoes of which rattle through Renly’s times and underpin key developments in the story.
There are a few weaknesses: Renly is well-drawn but hard to sympathize with; many of the characters come across as stereotypes that don’t quite ring true if they are trying to emulate authentic humans they have observed in the real world; I was unclear why Renly’s relatives would go to such lengths (& risks) to help him when he was obviously such a liability to their entire world.
But these are relatively minor quibbles in what is a strong first novel from this new writer: highly imaginative, well-paced and insightful into the processes of how cyber societies might evolve and the challenges for individuals within those societies.

I want more! Looking forward to Volume 2

Imagine a world where digital beings have French names and family histories as rich as those of Colonial Monarchs. Now imagine what happens when one of these so-called Ghosts, a young byte named Renly de la Gloire, rebels against the hardwired order of his "Etherworld" and ventures out into forbidden territory. Renly's internal dialogue pulls you in and lulls you into caring about him despite his painful naiveté and poor discernment. I don't want to give away the whole story here, but I will say that Ghosts is cleverly conceived, a bit geeky, and yet accessible to us all. Tobacco Jones has a signature voice, distinctly modern, informal, and vibrant. He may shape up to be a literary hero to geeks everywhere, following in the footsteps of legends such as - dare I say it - Neal Stephenson. There, I said it.

During a brief stint in Paris, Hartley met and fell in love with a Prussian officer, and early in 1913 he followed the officer to Berlin. When war broke out the officer was called up, and was killed in action in October 1914. Nearly a half-century later, this combination of bright color and composition with popular signage, informed by the coding of gay culture, was to make a strong impact on Pop artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Indiana. In this volume, approximately 25 of the artist's works from these years (1913–15) reveal the impact of World War I and elucidate the artist's appropriation of military symbols and Native American motifs. Also included are an illustrated chronology and a wealth of archival material that conveys the historical moment in which these works were made. Their presentation in Los Angeles marks the first focused exhibition of Hartley's Berlin paintings in the US since they were created.
Marsden Hartley was born in Lewiston, Maine, in 1877. After studying at the Cleveland School of Art he won a scholarship to study in New York, where he became one of the first American artists to adopt the discoveries of Picasso, Kandinsky and Klee. His first solo exhibition was held at Alfred Stieglitz's legendary 291 gallery. In 1912 he moved to Paris and was welcomed into the circle of Gertrude Stein. After extensive travels, in the 1930s Hartley returned to Maine, where he died in 1943.

About the Author
Ilene Susan Fort is the Gail and John Liebes Curator of American Art at LACMA, and has been with the museum since 1983. A leading scholar in her field, Dr. Fort has organized landmark exhibitions and published numerous articles, catalogues, and books. At LACMA, she curated and wrote the accompanying catalogues for "The Flag Paintings of Childe Hassam" (1986); " American Paintings in Southern California Collections" (1996); "Made in California" (with Stephanie Barron and Sheri Bernstein) (2000-2001); "Manly Pursuit: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins" (2010); and most recently "In Wonderland."

The reproductions are very vivid and correct and the text is both informative and well written (not always the case with museum catalogues). A well written short story

Cold is a beautifully written story with a highly engaging narration from beginning to the end. The setting and the relaxed style of dialogues gave the story a strong sense of reality, which I really enjoyed. Though I felt the story was a bit dragging at first, I was taken by Larson’s flawless writing style. Patiently, I read through the detailed backgrounds of the characters and their different circumstances, just to be disappointed with the lack of action. I expected a twist or surprise, especially with different events developing from every angle, but that didn’t happen. If only Larson executed the revenge in the same way she did the life of Michael and Julia after the death of their mother, this would have been a five star for me. Larson does a great job developing the characters and suspense, but the actual revenge is not as intense as I expected. A bone-chilling story? Hmm, maybe for those with a faint heart. However, Cold would be perfect for those who prefer a well written easy read on a lazy day. Despite the weak ending, I enjoyed reading Cold.

Cosy 'ish' ghost story

Well written, this somewhat 'cosy' ghost story, is filled with believable characters, all of which I felt some degree of sympathy for, even the bad guy.
The most disturbing event occurs in the first few pages, seen through the eyes of a twelve year old boy, and would probably be ok for a mature child of that age to read as only the aftermath of violence is witnessed.
It was interesting to see how a brother and sister dealt with the murder of their mother in different ways. One focusing on it almost constantly, the other trying to shut it out but suffering equally due to being unable to commit to a relationship for fear of losing a loved one again.
The romances that eventually arise for the brother and sister provide a new step for both of them, after years of emotional isolation. For me, the ghostly aspect was comforting, the murdered mother watching over her children, rather than any sense of fear. As the revenge aspect was part of the title, I expected/hoped for significantly more suspense as the bad guy neared his end, but this almost seemed a relief for the murderer, and was accomplished without significant drama. His suffering seemed to come from hiding out, drinking and womanising for the intervening twenty years.
Apart from the very occasional f bomb, perhaps two or three in the whole book, a single mildly graphic sex scene, and a fairly sanitised scene of domestic violence, all other 'adult' material is of the fade to black variety which makes this book suitable for a wide audience. I was hoping for a little 'more' but that is my personal preference, and not a reflection on the clear skill of the author to craft a story.

I really enjoyed this book. It was quite suspenseful from one character to another. My only precaution is that you had better dress warm because the title is very fitting for the book. Enjoy!

A spectacular first novel. Walls by R.T. Donlon is a harrowing tale of love, pereseverence, and horror all set against the back drop of a zombie apocalypse. Mainly set in Boston, this book takes a different spin on the Zombie tale, confining the story to a man searching desperately for his wife in Boston. Readers will seriously enjoy this book. The prose almost feels like a movie playing in your head, and boy is it a fun one. R.T. Donlon will do great things if he keeps it up. Please read.
