Okay.

(Source: Downloaded for free from Amazon.co.uk)

This was an okay book, and my 3-year-old liked the pictures. I did find it got a little repetitive after a while though, and we ended up skipping a lot of the text as the book went on as my 3-year-old got a bit bored. I did think that we maybe didn’t need the book to be quite so in-depth (such as explaining that a mule has a donkey for a dad and a horse for a mum), but maybe older children would appreciate it?
Overall; okay animal book,

Aria is an elemental artist―she creates fire from her hands. But her power is not natural. She steals it from lightning. It's dangerous and illegal in her world. When she's recruited to perform, she seizes the chance to get away from her family. But her power is fading too fast to keep stealing from the sky. She has no choice but to turn to a Granter―a modern day genie. She gets one wish at an extremely high price. Aria's willing to take a chance, but then she falls in love with the Granter . . . and he wants his freedom. Aria must decide what she's willing to bargain and how much her own heart, body, and soul are worth.
In a world where the sport of elemental powers is the most popular form of entertainment, readers will be swept away by a romance with stakes higher than life and death.

Review

“Fantasy readers will root for the smart, tough Aria and be awed by her beautifully articulated and actualized desire for independence.” ―School Library Journal

“The premise and back story are new, and the power balance between Aria and Taj (she holds most of the power for much of the novel) reverses the too-common structure.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“As beautiful and sweet as a Cézanne peach.” ―Stephanie Perkins, author of Anna and the French Kiss on Starry Nights

“Starry Nights is a beautiful, poignant, romantic story about the mystery and magic of art. Inspiring!” ―Malinda Lo, author of Ash and Adaptation on Starry Nights

“An incredibly imaginative, impossibly magical mystery with an equally magical and impossible love story at its center, Starry Nights is the art-lover's ultimate fantasy. If you've ever seen a painting and wished it could come to life, read this book. And then go to a museum.” ―Kendare Blake, author of Antigoddess and Anna Dressed in Blood on Starry Nights

4½/5 stars
By RoloPoloBookBlog
The Fire Artist by Daisy Whitney
Source: Netgalley
My Rating: 4½/5 stars
My Review:

In the brave new world occupied by Aria Kilandros, the control of the elements is not only a very real thing but something that is revered, admired and, coveted. Science cannot explain why a certain number of people are born with the ability to control the elements but for those who can and are very adept with their abilities, there is fame and a fortune to be made. What science can explain is that the abilities tend to run in families, the gifts emerge around age thirteen if they are going to and taper off in the twenties. For those with elemental gifts, there is only a small window of opportunity to make their name and their fortune.

To become a famous elemental artist, one must have excellent control, a sense of showmanship and a great desire to achieve greatness. To that end, there are those among the artists who do not have a natural born gift but one that is manufactured, stolen. Aria Kilandros is one of those artists and every single day of her life, she lives in fear of being discovered. At just seventeen years old, Aria has made a name for herself as a fire artist and if her plans work out as she hopes they will, she will soon be able to leave the minor league shows for one of the larger, more prestigious leagues. Though she wasn’t born with the ability to control fire, Aria has acquired the ability and sees it as her ticket out of the hell that is her life. Her father is a controlling and abusive man, her mother is a broken shell of the woman she used to be, her brother is an ex-con and, she must rely on her best-friend to help her restore her abilities on an ever-increasing basis. Aria’s abilities are remarkable but they come at a very, very high cost. For years she and her best-friend have born that cost together but when Aria gets called up to the big leagues, she is forced to find a new means by which to replenish her abilities.

Life in New York is a mixed bag for Aria. On the one hand she is living her dream, she a player in the most prestigious elemental league and on the other hand, she is growing increasingly more desperate and her fire is waning and becoming unmanageable. Enter Taj, the most beautiful boy Aria has ever seen and the one person who can grant her greatest wish. Taj is an entity of legend and myth, a Granter and with the right words and the proper payment, he can secure Aria’s abilities and her future. Granters are, in many ways tricksters and though Aria is in desperate need of Taj and his abilities, she also has to be very, very careful. For several days, Taj and Aria spend every available second together. For his own reasons, Taj is no hurry for Aria to make her wish and for reasons of her own, Aria is in no rush to make her wish. Love was certainly never in the cards but Aria cannot help herself and as fate would have it, love may be the one and only thing that can save she and Taj. Oh, a snow-white gator might also come into play and do some saving as well.

The Bottom Line: As I was pulling my information for this post, I looked at the overall rating for this read on Goodreads and found myself completely confused. I even double-checked the title and author to be sure the low star rating is actually for the book I read. I find myself thoroughly confused and, it seems at odds with a great many reviewers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the elemental artists to the Granters and back again, I was sucked into this read and pleased with it from beginning to end. Aria is wise beyond her years and has had to go to extraordinary lengths to protect herself, her family and, her secret. Though her choices aren’t always the best, they are made and Aria is always willing to accept the consequences of her actions no matter how awful those consequences may be. Even more fascinating than Aria and her talents are the Granters and their abilities. I found the story of the Granters and their role in human events to be quite intriguing and perfect match for the world Whitney has created. Granters have enormous power and the ability to alter the very world humanity inhabits though many are loathe to take on the role. Aria and Taj are a fine pairing and though their path is very, very rocky they do get a fitting ending. I found myself very much hoping this story was going to go on into a second book but alas, the The Fire Artist is a fully completed novel which leaves no stone unturned and no question unanswered. At the end of the day, I find I am quite alright with being at odds with my fellow reviewers on this read and fully recommend giving it a try.

What I liked: 1
By Julia N
Wow.

Thank you, NetGalley and Bloomsbury USA Children's books, for this free book to review!

What I liked:

1. The plot. Lean and mean, baby.

2. Aria. Also lean, mean, and quite a fighting machine. Her life sucked and she was pretty bitter, and yet she was still a likable heroine. She felt a lot of feels, which made me feel them too.

3. The idea. I really like fire, okay? Fire Artist is like Frozen gone berserk.

What was meh:

1. Aria was set on fire repeatedly as a child. How is she not dead?

2. It sure is convenient that the granter rules make exceptions for true love.

3. Taj is perfect, too perfect. At least he was (forced to be, as a granter) polite.

Would I read other books by Daisy Whitney? Absolutely! I fell in love with the writing and I want MOOOOOOOOOORE.

The Good Soldier - Classic Illustrated Edition, by Ford Madox Ford

* Beautifully illustrated with atmospheric paintings by renowned artists, The Good Soldier is the fascinating tale of an apparently perfect marriage which is gradually revealed to be anything but that. About the Author
FORD MADOX FORD (1873-1939) was a novelist, poet, literary critic, editor, and one of the founding fathers of English Modernism. He published over seventy books in his lifetime, perhaps most famously The Good Soldier. His books often centered on the conflict between traditional British values and those of the modern industrial society.

Pretty decent short novel
By zsminkey
I bought and read this book after telling my dad who is an English Teacher that I enjoyed Lolita by Nabokov. He said this is another unreliable narrator book and the descriptions seemed decent so I tried it out. It was a pretty decent read. With that being said, I feel it's pretty slow paced and not as much of a page turner as other things I've read. I would still recommend you check it out though.

Real grownups dealing with each other
By Lebowski
I now read all Ford books. He is the most approachable modernist. He has huge respect for the reader. He is an amazing psychologist. No one can teach this writer about writing. He just stands alone from Parade's end to the good soldier.
Four people interact about marriage and relations and sex. Very grown up. None of the strangeness of Joyce or Woolf.
Really the best of all reads.

Damned With Fierce Praise?
By reading man
Is THE GOOD SOLDIER really a classic novel?

Ford was a very prolific writer, I don't know how many books he wrote, though I think it was a number greater than 50, and a large number of them were novels. He also collaborated with Joseph Conrad on several novels, all of which are minor works in the Conradian oeuvre.

Ford's often praised for the Tietjens trilogy/tetraology (depends on whether you accept Graham Greene's argument about THE LAST POST), but if anyone finds it less than tedious except in part he's a more dogged reader than I. The same holds for THE FIFTH QUEEN, an historical novel that is virtually unreadable.

Assuming THE GOOD SOLDIER is a masterpiece, this makes Ford a one-book wonder when it comes to fiction. (Yes, I haven't attempted any of his novels except those I've mentioned so far, but Tietjens and the Queen suggest they wouldn't be good reads either in literary or other terms.)

THE GOOD SOLDIER is a good read, no question. Keeping the narrative straight takes some work, but Ford's skill at manipulating it is, mutatis mutandis, almost the equal of Conrad's in NOSTROMO or THE SECRET AGENT. Did some of Conrad's gift rub off on Ford or vice-versa?

The major problem with SOLDIER is that it's overpraised. Ruth Rendell, who wrote some of the most literate psychological thrillers of the last 50 years, once claimed that she had reread SOLDIER countless times and would continue to do so.

This seems excessive to me. A reread or two at long intervals makes sense, but SOLDIER doesn't deserve the repeated rereadings that Ford recommended--and justifiably so--of Flaubert's L'EDUCATION SENTIMENTAL (which he claims to have read about 13-14 times [don't remember the exact number].)

Ford's literary criticism and his other books about books are worth dipping into. His memoir of Conrad is interesting, though given Ford's reputation as a mythomaniac, it's probably not entirely trustworthy.

So ... I'd say read THE GOOD SOLDIER and be both enlightened and entertained, but don't expect a major novel by a major novelist.

Was a hit with my kids...

My boys really enjoyed this book, especially since it combined one of their favorite activities (guessing) with things they are familiar with. In other words, it was a game on their level and at the same time, a fruitful learning experience.

HIGHLY recommended (love it)
By AhmNev
This is a GREAT book for the little ones. It makes the child interact with interest. It is a fun way to teach your kids the alphabets. The pictures are cute, and it is a VERY smart concept to get the child to think. You first see the shadow of the image linked to the letter, once the child guesses what it is, then you can see the actual image. My kids really enjoyed it, and want to read it again and again.

My father was a doomsday prepper. He was one of those people that would rather go camping or teach their kids about hunting instead of worry about celebrity gossip or letting reality tv be the babysitter. He believed in America, the 2nd Amendment, and that a good man needed to be prepared to keep his family safe. I've always been proud to be his daughter, but never so much as I am now, even years after his death.

This is my short 'thank you letter' to my departed father, who died face down in the woods fighting for what he believed in. This is the brief story of a former police officer and family man who when the SHTF had to make sacrifices, endure hard choices, and struggle daily to do his part to re-build his world one survivor at a time.

I would've really loved this. I tried. I loved the idea. But honestly, for the price, and the fact it took me fifteen minutes to read is upsetting. Not worth the price for the length of content. If this is the beginning of a series, then I say to the author continue on with the premise. But the cost for twenty minutes of light reading is ridiculous.

Interesting book. It read like a eulogy, which in itself is quite unique. With this said, what a wonderful tribute to her Dad.

The Madness of Cthulhu Anthology (Volume One)From Titan Books

Sixteen stories inspired by the 20th century’s great master of horror, H.P. Lovecraft, and his acknowledged masterpiece, At the Mountains of Madness, in which an expedition to the desolation of Antarctica discovers evidence of an ancient ruin built by horrific creatures at first thought long-dead, until death strikes the group. All but two of the stories are original to this edition, and those reprints are long-lost works by science fiction masters Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Silverberg.

"A fusion of Antarctic adventure, science fiction, and early-modern horror, it not only offers chilling passages with an escalating sense of dread and isolation, but also constructs a world horrifying in its implications about mankind." -  Black Gate

These are short stories for folks who really like "At the Mountains of Madness." The stories are all (some vaguely) based upon that story; but, from different points of view. Some interesting ideas here.

If you liked "Mts. of Madness" then read this one
By GeoffK
Been reading HPL &co. for about 60 years; a LOT of more recent tales by others seem to be coattail-ridings. NOT so here ! The theme is based on "At the Mountains of Madness"; if you haven't read that great tale by HPL, do so before opening this book.
There are 18 items (16 stories, a Foreword and an Introduction). MY ratings include A+ for 4 stories and the Foreword, 2 stories at A and one A- (just a minor thing or two that I feel is 'off'), 5 in the B-range and 3 Cs. There are, unfortunately a pair of F ratings IMHO. Reasonably readers may differ!
Bottom Line: stays in my collection, as above average but not 'perfect'

By W. H. Pugmire, Esq.
This is the first of two volumes of THE MADNESS OF CTHULHU, the second of which will be published late next year. The Contents to this first volume:
Forward by Jonathan Maberry
Introduction by S. T. Joshi
At the Mountains of Murkiness by Arthur C. Clarke
The Fillmore Shoggoth by Harry Turtledove
Devil's Bathtub by Lois Gresh
The Witness in Darkness by John Shirley
How the Gods Bargain by William Browning Spencer
A Mountain Walked by Caitlin R. Kiernan
Diana of a Hundred Breasts by Robert Silverberg
Under the Shelf by Michael Shea
Cantata by Melanie Tem
Cthulhu Rising by Heather Graham
The Warm by Darrell Schweitzer
Last Rites by K. M. Tonso
Little Lady by J. C. Koch
White Fire by Joseph S. Pulver, Sr.
A Quirk of the Mistral by Jonathan Thomas
The Dog-Handler's Tale by Donald Tyson

S. T. Joshi continues his excellent work as editor of Lovecraftian-themed books (the most impressive of which is the amazing A MOUNTAIN WALKED hardcover from Centipede Press). With the exception of two reprints, this new anthology consists of new original tales. It is a sign of Mr Joshi's esteemed reputation that he is able to procure stories from a wide variety of highll-skilled professional writers, some who are new to the writing of Lovecraftian weird fiction. My favorite story in the book is by Mr Pulver. I love the peculiar poetic beauty of his highly individual style. I find his style very American and modern, , and it conveys potently the horror of his brutal situations. Mr Pulver has the ability to weave a combination of hallucinative strangeness with stark reality, and it is used with extreme effective in this disquieting tale. John Shirley's style is, on the other hand, straightforward, and very effective. His superb story delighted me from the very first page, because it is so absolutely Lovecraftian. On the first page we find mention of "Mountains of Madness," "Elder One," and "Elder Thing, a.k.a. a 'Great Old One'." This story is a perfect expression of the editor's aim, to create an anthology of tales inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. One of the book's most entertaining and rewarding stories is by Robert Silverberg. He writes so well, and his characters and setting are especially fine. There is a moment, when the brothers discover the hidden tomb, when I was reminded of Lovecraft's "The Statement of Randolph Carter." The historical nature of this superb story is deftly conveyed, adding to interest and atmosphere. Brilliant.

Mr Joshi is aware of a seeming dearth of women writers in the Cthulhu Mythos scene, and has included a number of women in this book. (The gender of K. M. Tonso remains enigmatic in the author's biographical note.) Mr Joshi has hailed Caitlin R. Kiernan as perhaps the finest writer of weird fiction today, and her story in this anthology helps to confirm this belief. She is magnificent in portrayal of character, and her Lovecraftian work possesses a genuineness that confirms her standing as one who has carefully read H. P. Lovecraft. Lois H. Gresh tells a captivating story with a precise prose style that flows smoothly across the page, and then erupts with moments of shocking violence. I love especially the opening paragraphs, which capture the sense of the outre, the Outside, with delicious detail such as having a dog sense a smell that is completely alien to anything it has hitherto experienced. J. C. Koch's tale is my introduction to this writer, and I am impressed by her easy handling of dialogue and solid characters. She is good as conjuring a sense of place.

Not all the tales in this first volume follow the editor's theme, as Mr Joshi explains in his Introduction: "This volume is not restricted to imaginative riffs on Lovecraft's Antarctic novella; other Lovecraftian themes and tales are used as springboards for ventures into the weird." One of our finest writers of modern Cthulhu Mythos stories was the late Michael Shea, who passed away unexpectedly this year. He was a brilliant writer, with a fine sense of the Lovecraftian tone. Mr Shea was a conjurer, who uses the magick of language to cast a spell upon his readers. He is, like Mr Pulver, a very modern voice, but the darkness he evokes is timeless, terrifying and beautiful.

These are just a few of my favorites in this wonderful anthology. The writing in each story is extremely good--there is not one poor story in the book. I was enchanted and entertained throughout my reading of the book. A special note of admiration goes to the wonderful cover illustration by John Jude Palencar--one wishes that he could have been listed with more prominence, and on the copyright page, instead of the very tiny print his name achieved on the back cover.

Alas that we have to wait until late 2015 for the second volume. It's Contents will include "Tsathoggua's Breath," by Brian Stableford (a brilliant author of modern Mythos fiction; his book, THE LEGACY OF ERICH ZANN may be ordered here at Amazon); "The Door Benneath," by Alan Dean Foster; "Dead Man Walking," by William F. Nolan; "A Crazy Mistake," by Nancy Kilpatrick; "The Hollow Sky," by Jason C. Eckhardt (who is also an exceptional artist, his work recently included in THE NEW ANNOTATED H. P. LOVECRAFT); "Deep Fracture," by Steve Rasnic Tem; "The Dream Stones," by Donald Tyson; "The Blood in My Mouth," by Laird Barron; "On the Shores of Destruvtion," by Karen Haber; and many more stories.

Dr Peterson is forced to take it easy for awhile after a serious car crash
By Deborah Dietz
Dr Peterson is forced to take it easy for awhile after a serious car crash. During this time she begins to re-examine a childhood interest in the paranormal and the spirit world. This starts with watching several seasons of Ghost Adventures, and Ghost Hunters on the internet, giving way to ever more questions about what is real and scientifically provable and what are merely "bumps in the night". She clearly states what is observed in the shows and by whom, then compares their findings with scientific studies. She also gives the reader some insights into those persons who paved the way into trying to prove or disprove the presence of spirits and why so-called "controlled" experiments have not worked especially well. She also clearly explains different types of "ghost hunting" equipment currently being used in the field of paranormal research. One thing I really liked was that the author did not pretend that research has clearly disproven paranormal events-- which in fact I have read from many other supposedly well educated authors.I can always feel the slant and argumentative style of that type of author. This book is more a comparison of different types of research and would make a good quick read as an adjunct in a college psych class. One thing I didn't like was that the author didn't bring the book full circle back to herself and her own quest. It would be fun to know how her own study of the subject has influenced her personal thinking.

Seth Hunnigan, just a regular, hatchback-driving, hardworking kind of guy, gets roped into spending a week at summer camp, leading a motley crew of Boy Scouts from Troop 69. Join Cody, Willy, Rat Face and Weepsy on their week of camp activities - singing around the campfire, boating, imaginary sword fighting and romance, teenaged and hopeless as it is. All seems normal until Hunnigan stumbles deep into camp's forest and meets Tipples, the ghost of a murderous clown, and his giant dog Brewster. Night after night, Seth returns to Tipples, who gives some particularly gruesome advice meant to help Seth with his courtship of Tara, the camp's elusive archery instructor.

Fun, entertaining, surprising
By Brianna
This novel is one of the kind - I can not qualify it as a horror story, nor as a romance, nor as anything in particular. That makes it even more interesting, because a classified novel sets some expectations, but with this one you literally do not know what to expect. Sometimes funny, sometimes emotional, human characters, ghosts, broken hearts, romance, life - it has a little bit of everything and quite well mixed together in a catchy story. Seth and the boy scouts are really interesting characters, and the summer camp setting basically sets the stage for some mystery on top of adventure. Seth Hunnigan, who is also the main character of this book, is also the one that opens the gate to all layers of this story : to fun, to boy-talk, to adventure, to romance and of course to the surprise element - Tipples and Brewster, the unexpected ghostly characters.

Campfire Stories
By TVen
Nothing beats a good scary story around the campfire, except a real live ghost story surrounding the camp. What starts as Seth Hunnigan being inconvenienced by having to take a group of scouts out camping, turns into a dark tale. Clowns tend to freak me out a bit, so this story was really creepy to me and a great read for this time of the year for sure, I really enjoyed the twist of the story, but that would be giving too much away.

Amazingly good fanzine for an underrated genre
By Amazon Customer
Grimdark is a genre which has been developing for quite some time. The inheritor of the mantle of Dark Fantasy and Low Fantasy, it just sounds better frankly. Likewise, it has the benefit of being able to learn from both those subgenres' mistakes while picking and choosing what elements it wants to take on. However, at the end of the day, it's still a pretty nebulously defined term and its fallen to authors like myself (here) and a few others to try to make sense of it.

That doesn't mean a magazine devoted to the concept can't be kickass, though.

Grimdark Magazine is a fanzine of the kind which used to be very popular in science-fiction fandom and helped countless writers get off the ground as well as exposed to a wider audience. They haven't gotten any less prevalent, really, but with the advent of the internet have become less overwhelmingly important to the proliferation of their genres. However, when you find something you really-really like, you should talk about it.

And I really-really like Grimdark Magazine.

For those who want a short summary of what the magazine is like, it's a collection of articles, interviews, short-stories, and reviews of various material dealing with the grimdark genre. Grimdark Magazine has a relationship with numerous important figures in the style such as Abercrombie and Mark Lawrence so the material is top quality. Given an ecopy of the magazine costs 2.99, I think you could do far-far worse with your money than pick up one or purchase a complete bundle.

Now for the review of this specific issue:

Cover

I'm not a big fan of this particular work and subsequent covers are much-much improved, but it was the first of the series and it wasn't enough to dissuade me from buying the interior. I do find it strange the Abercrombie review isn't mentioned on the cover but them's the breaks.

Non-Fiction

The Non-Fiction section of the magazine is my favorite part of the magazine despite the excellent quality of the short fiction. It's also why I purchased it. The interview with Joe Abecrombie gave excellent insights into the author's process.

I also enjoyed the review of his Young Adult novel, Half-A-King. Graham McNeil (Warhammer 40k) gives a good bit of insight into what he thinks grimdark is about and it's interesting to contrast that to Abercrombie.

The real meat of the issue, however, is an article called Grimdark is Here to Stay by Layla Cummins. I found this to be extremely interesting and a very good analysis of the subgenre's rise. One which was absolutely necessary for the magazine to establish what its thesis was.

Fiction

Grimdark Magazine 1# contains five short-stories, all by established writers, which are in the Grimdark mold. There's science-fiction, fantasy, and contemporary--which suits me just fine since I've written a grimdark superhero and urban fantasy novel.

"Bad Seed" by Mark Lawrence deals with a man with a propensity to violence in a Medieval farming community who is doing his best to put that aside. It reminds me a bit of A History of Violence in that its conclusion is some people are just very good at something, whether they should be or not. Overall, my favorite story in the magazine in terms of pure entertainment value.

"Shadow Hunter" is a Sword and Sorcery story about a man who is hired to take down a wizard, complicated by the fact he's of the same ethnicity as the people presently invading the region. The twist was a little confusing but I figured it out quickly enough.

"The Woman I Used To Be" is just good science-fiction, to be honest, and I'm not sure I'd classify it as grimdark given it's the kind of thing which would be right at home on The Outer Limits. A amnesiac woman cannot cope with the fact she feels no attachment to her family and struggles to find out who she really is. Grimdark or not, I think it's extremely well-written and should be shared with the world.

"The Neutral" is a story about a man who has successfully escaped a life of violence and moved on to a less violent career. Much like "Bad Seed", the issue of whether such individuals can ever escape their violent past is addressed. The ending is very-very grimdark. It also, weirdly, reminded me of Far Cry 2. Excellent story.

"The Red Wraith" is a poem rather than a story and is fine, though I've never been particularly poetically inclined.

Overall, this is a great ezine and the creators should be proud of themselves.

A promising beginning
By Terry Weyna
Grimdark Magazine seeks to fill a gap in the niche market for those who enjoy “grim stories told in a dark world by morally ambiguous protagonists,” according to the editorial in the first quarterly issue. The first issue is promising, if somewhat opaque to one who is not already immersed in this relatively new subgenre.

The first story is “Shadow Hunter: A Shadows of the Apt Story” by Adrian Tchaikovsky, set in his universe in which humanoids take on the characteristics of insects. The Wasp-kinden, for example, are described as savage and angry, and have the ability to deliver a sting that emanates from the palms of their hands. One leader successfully corralled the Wasps into a mighty army and became emperor, but what happens to a Wasp who no longer interested in being a foot soldier? Gaved undertakes a mission to find a Moth in a thick and frightening forest. I’ve read several of the novels Tchaikovsky has written that are set in this universe, so I found the story comprehensible, but I suspect anyone not familiar with this world would be lost.

“The Neutral” by Mike Gelpin, translated from the Russian by Anatoly Belilovsky, is the strongest story in the book. It posits a world in which there exists a Brotherhood of Neutrals, individuals who negotiate with criminals and terrorists in hostage situations. These Neutrals give the criminals what they request in return for the safe release of the hostages, and collect 10% of the “settlement package,” as it were, at the other end. This only works because the Brotherhood will kill anyone who harms a Neutral; this guarantee, enforced ruthlessly, means that criminals virtually always cooperate. The story is narrated by one Neutral who is sickened at the thought of letting criminals go free, but endures in his work in order to save the lives of the hostages. That works right up until the day he decides to retire. This story is dark, sad and compelling. I’d love to read more of this writer’s work.

Susanna is out of place in “The Woman I Used To Be” by Gerri Leen. She remembers nothing about the life she is now living, after a shuttle accident in which she was severely injured. She doesn’t remember how to knit, though she was accomplished at the craft before; she hates the perfume that is the only one that sits on her vanity. She doesn’t recognize her children, her mother. She dreams of a man who is very different from the one they tell her is her husband. The only entity she can be fully honest with is her home’s artificial intelligence. But nothing is as it seems. It’s a nice puzzle story that twists into a tale of perverse, horrible revenge.

“The Red Wraith” by Nicholas Wisseman is a piece of flash fiction that carries a nice sting. I’m not persuaded that flash really works for SF and fantasy, though; too much is lost to brevity.

The final tale is “Bad Seed: A Broken Empire Story” by Mark Lawrence. I’ve not yet read any of Lawrence’s novels, so I did not have the familiarity with Lawrence’s characters that I suspect would have leant greater weight to this story. Still, the story stands alone as that of a farmer who always should have been a warrior. The story makes me curious about Lawrence’s trilogy.

“Grimdark: It’s Here To Stay” is an essay by Layla Cummins that attempts to define the grimdark subgenre. I was surprised to read that the term has its origin in a table top game and the fan fiction it spawned, and that it was originally meant as an insult. Joe Abercrombie, the author of the FIRST LAW trilogy, adopted the term as his own, bringing it into more common usage and away from its undignified origins. The characters are generally drawn in shades of grey, with skewed moral compasses. Cummins has done her homework, and her piece sets the grimdark genre firmly in its place in history and in contemporary genre fiction.

An interview with Joe Abercrombie reveals him to be an irreverent subject who refers to his writing as “stuff that I made up in the middle of the night for my own amusement.” He emphasizes the role humor plays in grimdark fantasy — appropriately, it’s usually black humor. He credits George R.R. Martin’s SONG OF ICE AND FIRE as a big influence. It’s a by-the-numbers interview that does not depart from expected questions and answers, and gives little insight into the writer. Similarly, the review of Abercrombie’s latest novel, Half a King, gives little insight into the book.
The interview with Graham McNeill was almost incomprehensible to one who has not been immersed in grimdark fiction from its origins. The interview opens: “You’ve been an integral part of Black Library and the lives of so many 40K, WHFB and 30K fans for a long time.” I’m sure dedicated fans know what is being referenced in that sentence, but I didn’t. A little googling took me deep into the weeds pretty quickly. The interviewer could have made this a more accessible interviewer by having McNeill explain what he’s been up to for the past few decades. If he explained it as well as he explained what “grimdark” means to him, I would have been well-informed.

Perhaps Grimdark sees itself as catering to an already-dedicated audience, rather than to one who has read a novel by Abercrombie, Lawrence or Richard Morgan and found herself intrigued enough to seek out a magazine that promises to give her more of a genre that is new to her. This means that Grimdark is going to lose a substantial part of its possible audience, as it offers stories in already-existing fictional universes and interviews that assume readers already know a good deal about those being interviewed. Despite my misgivings, however, I found the Gelpin and Leen stories sufficiently satisfying that I’ll be reading the next issue.

True Grit
By Simon Ellberger
This is an excellent magazine and more than well worth the very low price. It focuses on my favorite sub-genre of the speculative fiction field: "grimdark."

With this issue you get 5 short stories, two interviews (one with Joe Abercrombie and one with Graham McNeill), an article exploring the concept of grimdark, and a book review of "Half a King." The introduction also mentions that a book review of "Prince of Fools" is included, but this half of the reviews is omitted. So, to fill the gap and be helpful, let me just say that "Prince of Fools" is a great book. No fooling. Now back to the issue at hand.

The main reason for buying this should be the stories; hence, I will focus briefly on each of them.
1. "The Bad Seed" by Mark Lawrence. This story is set in Mark's "The Broken Empire" universe, but works just fine as a standalone. However, those familiar with the world of "The Broken Empire" will get additional pleasure since it serves as an origin story for one of its residents: a resident evil so to speak. The story itself is superb — hauntingly written, with grim pain dripping from the sentences. Not surprisingly, I claim this story alone is worth the purchase of the issue. That may sound clichéd, but I bloody well mean it...
2. "The Woman I Used To Be" by Gerri Leen. This one caught me unawares. I was not familiar with the author and wasn't expecting something this good. It's a sci-fi story about a woman with amnesia. But I'd forget about memory tropes. It's really about something else and it's quite morbid. I not only liked it, but much to my surprise, I have to say it's as good as Mark Lawrence's story.
3. "Shadow Hunter" by Adrian Tchaikovsky. This is a "Shadows of the Apt" tale. Adrian gives an apt summary of the key features of that series' humanoid races sufficient to understand the story. I'd call "Shadow Hunter" a nice anecdote — good and worth a read. But it's overshadowed by the above two stories.
4. "The Neutral" by Mike Gelpin (translated by Anatoly Belilovsky). This is about a protagonist whose job is to (supposedly) serve as a neutral go-between in situations involving hostages, kidnapping, terrorism, and the like. The effectiveness of the story seems to hinge on its attempt-to-shock ending. How well this works depends on whether or not you guess that ending beforehand. I did. So I wasn't shocked. Or maybe I was shocked that I guessed it. It was still a more than okay story, told in a tone so dry you feel bloodthirsty reading it.
5. "The Red Wraith" by Nicholas Wisseman. This isn't really a story. It is at most a vignette. It seems to be a sort of blurb or advanced advertisement of an actual story coming in the future with the same title, and not really something ready to be Red now.

Overall conclusion: You should buy this magazine unless you live in abject poverty, in which case you would make a poor reader anyway.
