Mycroft is convinced that there is more to the murder than the police believe and persuades Watts to help him investigate. This story is, in part, a homage to Sherlock Holmes and follows all the traditions of a whodunit. However, it's also a tale of a friendship and developing romance of two grieving teenagers. Rachel hates the city of Melbourne and longs for her family's outback farm, lost to foreclosure. Mycroft lives with an uncaring aunt and is still suffering from the loss of his parents in a car crash. The book begins with the aftermath of a fight—Watts and friend Mai mopping up Mycroft's blood. It is a little confusing, as the fight is detailed, schoolteachers and main characters are introduced, and Mycroft comes off as a smart mouth. However, the author develops the characters into authentic, sympathetic individuals while keeping the mystery sustained and the plot moving forward. Somewhat graphic descriptions of the murdered body, swearing, and a subplot of child's sexual abuse make this a novel aimed at older teens. About the Author
Ellie Marney was born in Brisbane, and has lived in Indonesia, Singapore and India. Now she writes, teaches, talks about kid's literature at libraries and schools, and gardens when she can, while living in a country idyll (actually a very messy wooden house on ten acres with a dog and lots of chickens) near Castlemaine, in north-central Victoria. Her partner and four sons still love her even though she often forgets things and lets the housework go. Ellie's short stories for adults have won awards and been published in various anthologies. Every Breath is her first novel for young adults.

READ THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY

You know when you sometimes read a book and as you’re reading it, you say to yourself—maybe out loud like I do, even when no one is around—“OMG I am just loving this intensely”? This is what happened while I was reading EVERY BREATH by Ellie Marney. As a lover of Sherlockian things, the prospect of reading a contemporary retelling of sorts of the Sherlock mythos, featuring a boy named Mycroft in the Sherlock role and Watts played by a girl, appealed to me in endless ways. Guys. No joke. EVERY BREATH is amazing. All of you should read it. I’ll wait.
So EVERY BREATH is about the aforementioned Mycroft and Watts, two teenagers living in Melbourne, Australia. They’re bffs, but Rachel (that’s Watts) is majorly attracted to Mycroft’s prickly, intense, brilliant self. Mycroft is that kind of coldly logical genius type who sometimes doesn’t ace people skills. But when the two of them go to zoo to meet up with one of Mycroft’s homeless buddies, they discover him murdered and get all tangled up in investigating his death. Obviously, they wind up in the killer’s clutches. Also, they wind up have to deal with their growing feelings for one another. It’s all rather outstanding.
Without a doubt, my favorite, FAVORITE thing about EVERY BREATH is Mycroft and Watts. I can’t begin to tell you how excellent their relationship is, and I don’t just mean their increasingly intense, complicated romantic feelings, although YES PLEASE. I just mean their friendship. Rachel has just moved to Melbourne from the country and is a fish out of water. Mycroft was born in London and lived there until his parents’ untimely and mysterious death (more on this in a second), and the two of them have developed this deep understanding of one another. Or at least, Watts has developed an understanding of Mycroft, who’s a pretty complex dude with lots of secrets. But as they investigate the death of Homeless Dave, their relationship is tested and changed. Guys. THESE TWO. Separately, they are wonderful characters, flawed, different, supportive. Together they balance each other out. It’s clear from the beginning that these two could never have something casual between them. Their connection is too intense, and Mycroft doesn’t really do casual since he can barely give a s*** about anything. I LOVED THEM TO INFINITY AND BEYOND pretty much instantly.
While it was the relationship between Mycroft and Watts that really made EVERY BREATH stand out to me, there are a lot of other things going on that only made my enjoyment of Ellie Marney’s book greater, and one of those things are the secondary characters. I particularly adored Rachel’s brother, Mike, and her best friend, Mai. As much as I loved Rachel’s chemistry with Mycroft and wanted to just DEVOUR IT, I also really enjoyed her relationship with her brother–very sweet and fun and loving in a “OMG YOU ANNOY ME BUT I ALSO LOVE YOU” kind of way. You know, siblings. And Mai is sarcastic and insightful and such a great friend. BIG FAN.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a Sherlockian story without a mystery to solve, and the one Rachel and Mycroft are attempting to puzzle out is a good one. Again, I thought the best part of EVERY BREATH was the relationship and the tension between Mycroft and Watts, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the story wasn’t also good. I wouldn’t have loved this book as much as I did if I didn’t enjoy seeing the two of them tackling this crime together and using their brains together. BRAINS ARE SEKSI YOU GUYS. Also, investigating this murder gives us the opportunity to get a look into what makes Mycroft tick, namely the suspicious death of his parents. Mycroft is haunted by it, Rachel wants to understand it better to help him overcome his lingering grief, and yet so many questions remain unanswered. I enjoyed this arc quite a bit.
I could probably go on and on about EVERY BREATH. I loved it so much–I loved Mycroft and Watts so much–that I ordered the first two books from the Australian publisher and am DYINGG for book 3. Already. I have to admit that this was one of those books that pleasantly surprised me. I hadn’t heard much, aside from very positive reviews from a few trusted friends, in terms of buzz, but DANG you guys. CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK ENOUGH.

The spirit of Sherlock Holmes lives on!

Every Breath by Ellie Marney is a cracking read. The pace is faultless, the plot twists and turns like a hedge maze, and the characters are layered, complex and oh so engaging.
Unlike recent television remakes that place Conan Doyle's characters in a modern city (be it London or New York), Ellie Marney has created an entirely new cast of characters. We see the story unfold through the eyes of Rachel Watts, a seventeen year old country girl transplanted into the inner suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. She comes with her own baggage, but it seems minor in comparison to the back-story of the energetic and enigmatic James Mycroft - her neighbour and classmate, himself a transplant, but this time from London. Mycroft is a bit of a tortured genius and a whiz at forensics. Why does he live with his anti-social Aunt Angela? What happened to his parents? And how did he earn the scars that cover his body?
The story takes off when Rachel and Mycroft stumble onto the scene of a murder. Convinced the police are on the wrong track, Mycroft takes it on himself to solve the crime. Let the amateur sleuthing begin! But not everybody is happy with two teenagers poking around a murder investigation, least of all the police, and things don't always go according to plan. The pair have to deal with obstacles never faced by Holmes and Watson: angry teachers, disapproving parents, the threat of suspension or expulsion, and the very real risk of being grounded.
Every Breath is a fabulous mix of gritty YA and the time-honoured murder mystery. Marney's crisp prose crackles with wit and vivid imagery, and the romantic tension is so taut it hums like harp strings.

I NEED more of this series. I adore the characters

Nikki from There Were Books Involved was the first person I saw mentioning this book. After she linked to it I knew I had to request it because “what if Sherlock Holmes was the boy next door?” Can we say, dream come true? So, I requested this without much thought at all.
Soon after that glorious email saying I had access to the book I started to think…Mycroft….
Mycroft
I got a tad worried. I love Mycroft but I wasn’t so sure I wanted him to be that boy next door. I went into this wanting Sherlock, not the older Holmes. So I was a bit apprehensive. Ok, not too much but a tiny bit.
No need to worry! James Mycroft was swoon-worthy, complex, compelling and incredibly original in his own right. I was pleased that the characters of Watts and Mycroft were a fun play off the Sherlock mythology but not a carbon copy. You can easily see the author’s admiration for Doyle’s classic characters.
I was instantly swept up into Jame’s character and watching him develop through the eyes of Rachel Watts was a complete pleasure. Their chemistry was perfection and Rachel was likeable and relatable. I thought that each of these characters held their own but shone while together. And the secondary cast was not forgotten either. Mycroft and Watt’s friend group was wonderfully represented and equally engaging.
The mystery Marney created was fun to ponder though it wasn’t overly complex to guess who the villain was. I felt that she utilized the suspense and mystery very well and the final showdown was action packed. This was a quick read that kept me highly entertained and glued to the pages. The real driving force for me in this book was the relationship between Mycroft and Watts. I absolutely loved their interactions, pining and anything related to the two of them.
Once finishing Every Breath I was distraught that I could not continue the series immediately. The book ended in a great place, no horrible cliff-hangers or anything but I was so invested in the characters I wasn’t ready to say goodbye just yet. I’ve since ordered Every Word because I must have it.
Final Thoughts:
I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted when I started Every Breath other than a complex relationship between the lead characters and a smart, hard to know main character to fall in love with. I got all of this plus a fun and entertaining book that left me wanting much more.
