The Open Road: Photography and the American Roadtrip, by David Campany

After World War II, the American road trip began appearing prominently in literature, music, movies and photography. As Stephen Shore has written, Our country is made for long trips. Since the 1940s, the dream of the road trip, and the sense of possibility and freedom that it represents, has taken its own important place within our culture. Many photographers purposefully embarked on journeys across the U.S. in order to create work, including Robert Frank, whose seminal road trip resulted in The Americans. However, he was preceded by Edward Weston, who traveled across the country taking pictures to illustrate Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass; Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose 1947 trip through the American South and into the West was published in the early 1950s in Harper's Bazaar; and Ed Ruscha, whose road trips between Los Angeles and Oklahoma formed the basis of Twentysix Gasoline Stations. Hundreds of photographers have continued the tradition of the photographic road trip on down to the present, from Stephen Shore to Taiyo Onorato, Nico Krebs, Alec Soth and Ryan McGinley. The Open Road considers the photographic road trip as a genre in and of itself, and presents the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse. The book features David Campany's introduction to the genre and 18 chapters presented chronologically, each exploring one American road trip in depth through a portfolio of images and informative texts. This volume highlights some of the most important bodies of work made on the road, from The Americans to the present day.

Review
David Campany’s study of the great photographic odysseys across America reveals a country more diverse than ever. –The Guardian
David Campany compiles a photographic boulevard of broken dreams running from the Swiss immigrant Robert Frank’s nomadic portraits of 1950s stragglers to the sinister 21st century manipulations of the team Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs, who document roads that exist only in some collective hallucination. –The New York Times LENS blog
The vastness is also erotic—it’s a void urban photographers and their subjects can disappear into. –The New York Times LENS blog
By the end, you'll feel as if you've been in the passenger seat for a page-by-page road trip of a lifetime. –Los Angeles Times
From shots of Mount Rushmore and the Pacific Coast Highway to glimpses of everyday life at roadside motels and pit stops, the photos highlight Americans’ long-standing fascination with the road, as a window into both the country’s cultural life—with the car window as a literal frame—and its pioneering attitude. – The Wall Street Journal

Mostly using the off-ramp to see the country
By Robin
The road trip is a staple of the photobook business and this title does a decent job in giving an overview of the genre. David Campany, in his illustrated front of book essay, traces photo trips way back to the early years of the last century. Page nine reproduces a spread from a fascinating Rand McNally photo-auto guide published in 1910 which used images of every significant corner and building to show the route from New York to Chicago. An oddity of the theme was a series of articles in the Moscow based Ogonek magazine in 1935 by Ilf and Evgeny Petrov, two Russians who used a ten week countrywide tour of America to take photos and write the copy (reprinted in 2006 by the Princeton Architectural Press). Campany makes an interesting point that...'American culture still finds it difficult to shake the idea that its big cities embody the present and its small towns the past'...the open road (certainly not the freeway) leads back to a nostalgic past.

The book looks, historically, at the work of nineteen photographers though actually in eighteen chapters because the last one is a combined effort from Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs. Each gets a series of one to a page photos from between five (Victor Burgin) and seventeen (Stephen Shore). I think it's worth say that if you have books from Frank, Winogrand, Eggleston, Meyerowitz, Shore, Sternfeld and Soth you might well have seen their contributions in these pages. This book can be a useful introduction to lesser well known photographers who also have books in print.

I can understand using Robert Frank's The Americans as the starting point for the book though unfortunately it means that Berenice Abbott's remarkable photo study of US1 in 1954 doesn't get a look in and I wonder why Jacob Holdt is included, he did travel around the Nation but to me his work is more a collection of interior reportage. I would have included Joachim Brohm or Benjamin Swett. Victor Burgin is an odd choice too, mainly because he includes text in his photos and therefore has no control over the size of his published photos so that the text can end up as unreadable, as it is in two of his photos on page 215. The book's most intriguing images come in the last chapter with fourteen photos by Onorato and Krebs from their 2009 'Great unreal' book. Difficult to describe their work so Google them.

I enjoyed the 'Open road' as a worthwhile wrap-up of the highway photo genre. A handsomely produced book using a 200 screen for the photos on a quality matt art paper, a bibliography and index would have been useful though.

See my comment below to look inside the book.

The history of American road photography
By Michael McKee
Road trips have provided the fodder for many photographers, especially in America. The Open road offers an excellent overview of the genre and places the major names in American road photography in context, both chronological order and with the major art photography world at the time the photos were taken. So, the book works as a history of road trips, yet it is much more. The photos that chosen for the book make for an attractive and compelling photo book on their own. The introductory essays for each photographer offer a nice introduction to their photography and methodology, though I do have to agree that the typography in those essays is awful. The ornamentation (not technically ligatures, which connect two letters) on the letter s is particularly distracting. Fortunately, that distraction pales when we get a look at the photos.

Obviously, no one volume can cover all the good photographer who have published compendium of road trip photos. The classic photographers are covered, like Frank, Winograd, Friedlander, Eggleston, Meyerowitz and Shore. The selection of current photographers is necessarily more a reflection David Campany's personal tastes. How could it be otherwise?

The selection of images representing each photo book that he chose reflects nicely on the original source books, three of which I own. While no short selection of images can convey the breadth of the original road photo books, the ones here do reflect the tone of the originals and give enough of a sense of the photographer's work that we can choose which to pursue further.

The printing is excellent. Colors look true to the films the photographers used. Black and white photos display a good tonal range. All in all, the prints are compelling. The binding is of good quality as is the printing.

One feature that I love is an unofficial appendix that shows where each photographer made the original photos. There's a separate map for each photographer. This is a book that I will consult often and treasure.

"I do not offer the old smooth prizes, but offer rough new prizes"
By R. M. Peterson
Over the years I have accumulated a fair number of photography books. THE OPEN ROAD is already one of my favorites, and it surely will be one of those that I return to most often.

The bulk of the book consists of photographs selected from road trip portfolios or books by eighteen different photographers. Many of the photographs are manifestly "open road" photographs, in the sense that they feature road vistas or scenes; some bear the clear indicia of having been taken from inside an automobile. But whether or not obviously an "open road" photograph, all were taken during an American road trip (some, for example, are motel room interiors).

The first of the featured photographers is Robert Frank. The seven photographs of his are from his now classic book of 1959, "The Americans", which sported an introduction by the archetypal "open roader" Jack Kerouac. The last of the eighteen is the dual-headed TONK (the Swiss team of Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs), from their book "The Great Unreal", published in 2009. In between are such famous photographers -- famous in the sense that at least I was familiar with their work -- as Garry Winogrand, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, Joel Meyerowitz, and Joel Sternfeld. But some were new to me, and I appreciated being exposed to their work -- in particular, Jacob Holdt, Alec Soth, and Justine Kurland. (I list all eighteen photographers in a comment.)

The book begins with a thirty-page, generously illustrated essay by David Campany. The purpose of that essay is to explore the cultural context leading up to Robert Frank's book. It goes back to the Rand McNally Photo-Auto Guides, launched in 1906, and discusses influential photographers of the American scene who were forerunners of Robert Frank, such as Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Esther Burley. Then, for each of the eighteen highlighted photographers in the main section of the book, Campany provides a one-page introduction, placing that photographer's work within, or as an extension of, the tradition of American road photography. These essays by Campany are excellent.

By the way, Campany traces the phrase "the open road" to Walt Whitman's poem "Song of the Open Road", from "Leaves of Grass". Whitman and his quintessential book of American poetry undoubtedly gave the phrase its enormous and resonant currency, but I suspect that it existed before Whitman (who was, after all, an inveterate "borrower" of mid-nineteenth-century Americana). In any event, as the title for this review I have used a line from Whitman's poem, as it seems to capture much of the ethos of American road photography.

The book itself is over-sized (12 x 10 inches and about 5 pounds in weight) and handsome. The prints are of the high standards that we have come to expect from Aperture. There never is more than one photograph on a single page. A few of the photographs are printed across a two-page spread, so impeccably that there are no "gutter" breaks in the image. Page numbers and photograph captions are discrete. THE OPEN ROAD would make for an ideal coffee-table book, all the more so because, unlike many coffee-table books, it would be enjoyed by almost anyone who plops on the nearby sofa.

The majority of us don't really anticipate the worst happening to us. After all, bad things only happen to other people.

And we don't get to choose when other people become us.

Jill Johnson and Maddie Russo are two mothers who experience the earth-shattering impact of separate tragedies. Both 35-year-old Jill and 16-year-old Maddie fall victim to their personal circumstance, succumbing to a life neither of them plans for herself. But a brief encounter between the two of them forces the path of their lives to change course, offering light to their despair, and setting a journey where hope leads the way.

In The Road to Hope, Crissi Langwell paints a portrait of grief and affliction, opening the wounds of life's calamities. But with a glimpse of a possible new direction, Langwell reveals the emergence of strength, and the beauty that exists when hope prevails.

I admit I love a good cry when I read a book
By casacarrasco
I was absolutely RIVETED! The story Langwell tells is raw and emotionally moving. I admit I love a good cry when I read a book. This one did not disappoint. But I wasn't crying through the entire thing. (And disclaimer: I do have some pregnancy hormones going on right now that probably contributed to the crying.) I related to the struggles and worries of BOTH Jill and Maddie, and found myself rooting them each on to the very end. I have had the privilege of reading all of this author's published novels, so far, and this is her best work yet!!!

A MUST READ!
By Daiane Chen
* I have received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
Let me tell you how profoundly moving this book is: I hardly cry in a book. But this book warms my heart and it truly did make me tear up. The struggle both characters in the story face is such a tragedy. I can't imagine how I would feel if I was in their place. But, eventually the characters looked in the light of hope and survived past through their hardships.
Probably one of my favorite parts in this book is when Maddie names her daughter hope
The characters in the story have survived through so much but I admire their courage to move on and look at the good things that will happen to them. Both Jill and Maddie are characters I can look up to because they taught readers (including me) that when you're in the dark, you have to look at the bright things that will guide you out.
I probably feel very sorry for Maddie because she was all alone, she had to survive her struggles all by herself and she was only 16 years old. Jill wasn't alone, she had her loving and caring husband. But, I do understand Jill's feelings.
Overall this was an amazing book and I started reading at night and I couldn't stop until I had finished the end of the book, and I have to say it was very well written with very deep and moving emotions. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and I have to say I am now looking forward to reading all of Crissi Langwell's books :)
And if it wasn't clear enough 5 Stars all the way! Well done! And thank you Crissi for writing such an amazing and inspiring book :)

A Magical Story
By Candi Sary
What a gem! I don't often pick up kids' books now that my own kids are grown, but I was in the mood for a magical story and the synopsis of "Oddry" on Goodreads appealed to me. I really got caught up in this whimsical tale about a girl who was raised by hawks. She lives in a nest on the ledge of an apartment building in New York City. No one has actually seen her up close. She's only been spotted from the corners of eyes, and so people are unsure if the urban legend of the "Bird Girl" is real. Born without a right hand, this inventive eleven-year-old creates mechanical attachments from junk she collects around New York City, including a "handable" (as she calls them) that allows her to fly. She befriends wild animals and even speaks their languages. This character is just wonderful! And her adventures with a boy named Will, the first human she meets, are fabulous! I loved the whole feel of this book, even as an adult. Obie Scott Wade is a delightfully imaginative storyteller.

Amazaballs!
By Joanna Blackhart
Oddry is a beautiful little book with fun characters and a unique scenario.

Filled with bird puns galore, and a story which pulls the reader in, you might find yourself doing exactly as I did -- reading this entire story in one night!

The book concludes with a notice that more Oddry is coming and I absolutely can NOT wait to get them! You can bet I'll be purchasing all future Oddry books the day they are released!

I love this story, and I really love these characters!

Black, White but no Shades of Grey
By Jackie Powers
I read Beta about a year ago and I really liked the book and I was excited for the new one to come out. This book reunites Elysia with her original Zhara. Elysia is pregnant and with Zhara's old boyfriend even though she's still in love with her clone boyfriend who she was seperated from.

I didn't like this book as much as the original. I thought that both the girls came across as very snooty and selfish. The whole books is about the girls being jealous of each other and who has which boy instead of concentrating on the clones fight for freedom. Also all the humans were bad, and all the clones were good even though there were several humans who had helped them and several clones who were evil.

I get that teens tend to see in black and white with no shades of grey, but I also know that as adults we need to show them that this is not the case that there are reasons why people do the things they do. I didn't see that in this book.

If you loved Beta, then read this one!
By Marianna
I really liked the first book Beta and had high hopes for Emergent, the second book in the series.... Unfortunately, I am disappointed. Overall, this book was okay, but as I read through it, I kept feeling that it lacks something.... I still cannot completely put a finger on it, but it feels incomplete and very difficult to believe. It feels fake and pushed through, almost rushed in a way. There were still cliff hangers at the end of the book which I felt could have been resolved with just a few more pages of writing and explanations. I felt a bit confused at the end as several things happened which left me saying, "Huh? What just happened?"

I would say that if you loved the first book, read this one, but with caution. It does contain some unpleasant scenes. If you did not care too much for the first book, then skip this one - you won't be missing much.

Happy Reading!

Too little, too late?
By Tez Miller
TRIGGER WARNINGS: This book contains slut-shaming, ableism, gaslighting, and pregnancy by rape.

This book was delayed. Originally due out in 2013 (maybe March), it didn't release until October 2014. Never heard any explanation for the wait, but that's okay - probably none of my business. And maybe because EMERGENT is the second in a series (no word yet on the next book, though I think the series sold in a four-book deal), there seemed to be little publicity for it. It's only just barely mentioned on the author's website. ("And, it's official: Beta book 2: EMERGENT is now available!") Not even a summary for the book there, but I suppose that's fine, too - maybe to prevent spoilers? And managing a website can be troublesome.

I gave the first book, BETA, five stars, and like with other five-star books I was concerned I wouldn't enjoy the next as much, so I put off reading EMERGENT when it was finally published..

And thus I have mixed feelings about EMERGENT. It starts off from the point of view of Zhara, who took a drug that slowed her heartbeat, so when she crashed at sea at first her rescuers thought she was dead...so they cloned her. (It makes sense in the context of the book.) Anyway, now Zhara lives on an island, Heathen, with self-actualised clones who are planning an Insurrection against the people of the island paradise Demesne, from whom the Emergents escaped.

Then Zhara's clone, Elysia, arrives and there are love jealousies and...not much happens until the ambush. When the characters move to Demesne, the plot gets going. But is it a case of too little, too late? The conveniences of someone acquiring someone else's lightning finger abilities; the two women-in-fridges (i.e. females who aren't Zhara or Elysia) are the first to die...

I love Demesne's setting, such a vibrant and vivid world of colours. It's fascinating to learn about cloning, and the plight for clones' rights. And while I do rather like this novel, I wonder how much of my score is due to nostalgia. I was hopeful of another five-star read after BETA, so I think my own expectations brought me down.

All this said, I'm very much looking forward to the next book, or books, in this series. Hopefully the wait for Book 3 won't be as long, but I'll understand if it is.

For decades, Carl Cook fought crime in the city of New Caliburn as the superhero Piecemaker. With the power to disassemble most everything around him, Carl was very good at taking things apart; less so at putting them back together. One divorce and an alienated daughter later, he realized the toll heroing had taken. In an attempt to move on and take charge of his life, Carl hung up the cape and opened Cook's Deli. But things are never that simple in the superhero capital of the world. Cook's Deli has a front-row seat to the city's superpowered exploits, from the exciting to the bizarre. A former sidekick discovers just how hard life is without a hero, a psychic rat goes on the warpath for another slice of rye, a D-list villain plots his revenge...these are just some of the adventures going on right in front of the deli counter. Carl may change the world, even more than he did in costume. Only now he does it one cold cut at a time. In THE DELI COUNTER OF JUSTICE, you'll explore the world in and around Cook's Deli with nine stories and poems written by Kitty Chandler, Thomas Dorton, Rahne Ehtar, Alyssa Herron, Amorak Huey, C. Gayle Seaman, Eric Sipple, Paul Smith, and Arlo J. Wiley. Featuring an introduction by Mere Smith (Angel, Rome).

Order Up!
By Dale (Koontz) Guffey
To be fair, I'm a sucker for a good superhero story. But what happens when the TV cameras leave? What happens to the second-tier "capes"? And exactly how clear is the line between a hero and a villain, anyway? If those questions make you pause for a second and say, "Hey, there's something to that idea . . ." then you NEED THIS BOOK! While I could write a lengthy review singling out every piece of work, I'm going to restrain myself from doing that - as a reader, you need the fun of discovering Eric Sipple's "Pixelated" on your own.

It's an old adage in acting circles that no one ever plays a villain, because no one ever sees himself in that role - villains are just the guys who are willing to make the hard choices that the "capes & tights" crew can't manage to stomach. Read Arlo J. Wiley's "Innovation" for a first-class lesson in that concept.

And, while you certainly could stay up late and read the book straight through, allow yourself a space of time to savor Paul Smith's gorgeous ". . . A Hero Only One." It's not easy being a sidekick.

This is a solid collection and both new and jaded readers of superhero stories will benefit from Mere Smith's introduction which explains why we crave superhero stories. Wiley edited the collection together and all the pieces are linked by location - first, through the city of New Caliburn (not known quite as well as Gotham or Metropolis, but you can't blame the city for that) and second, through the fantastic deli run by Carl Cook, which is known simply as "Cook's Deli."

In short, I found myself liking New Caliburn and wanting to saunter over to Cook's for a turkey-on-wheat. I bet the pickle spears are fabulous, too.

Seriously, this is a book that deserves to be placed on your shelf. Face out.

Superheroics Done Right!
By Ensley Guffey
(In the interests of full disclosure I received an advanced electronic copy of The Deli Counter of Justice in exchange for this review).

Ever since the explosion of Krypton in 1938, superheroes have been enshrined in a very special place in the American imagination. Arguably, of course, superheroes go back a lot further, to a time when they had names like Gilgamesh. But it is the caped crusaders, overgrown Boy Scouts, and Wonder Women in their tight, bright costumes that have entranced generations of readers, adults and kids alike. I myself am just old enough to remember the magic of the spinner-rack at my local newsstand – an unfailing spring of myths and monsters for a boy who had but recently read his first book all by himself: an issue of The Pink Panther, printed by Gold Key Comics.

So yeah, I know comics, and I know the supers. They have fired my imagination for most of my life, and continue to do so. So I was both excited and skeptical when I heard that AJ Wiley was putting together a superhero anthology – in the form of prose short stories, without illustrations. Excited because AJ knows comics, and skeptical because all too often superhero stories told in mediums other than sequential art are unsatisfying exercises in frustration.

Not so with The Deli Counter of Justice. The stories and poems in this volume all take place within the shared universe of the city of New Caliburn, and are loosely connected by six to ten degrees of separation from Carl’s Deli, a sandwich shop owned and operated by Carl, formerly known as the costumed hero Piecemaker. Superheroes and their accompanying supervillains are facts of life in New Caliburn. In fact there is an entire cable-news hour devoted to their various battles and heroics. What really makes these stories work, however, is the uncanny ability of the assembled authors to ignore the flash in favor of the flesh.

The stories in The Deli Counter of Justice are all about people, and about ol’ Bill Faulkner’s “human heart in conflict with itself.” Metahuman abilities and the eternal problems of costume design are just two more things to deal with as these folks go about making enough money to pay the rent, or try to keep their heads above water in a world that all too often just doesn’t really care about them beyond that single news-hour. The characters are each and every one fully realize, and each story left me wanting to read more about the teenage genius who keeps the city safe from her parents’ basement, the down on his luck ex-con and C-list villain pushed into an entirely new level of rage and power by one final betrayal, the grieving asexual sex-store employee with the tattooed hearts on her arms and legs, the eternal sidekick who becomes a real hero at last, Carl’s daughter and her unsuspected talents, and Carl himself – not to mention the man-rat thing with a taste for weirdly-tainted meat. I want more of each and every one.

My one critique of the book is the two chapters presented in verse. While the poetry is accomplished, for me it interrupted the overall flow, and brought me out of the world of New Caliburn. Those two chapters aside, however, I loved this book. I suppose if I had to compare The Deli Counter of Justice with something I would go to Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson, and Alex Ross’ Astro City, but The Deli Counter of Justice is very much its own thing, and I don’t think you have to love comics, or superhero movies, to love this book. The people who have sprung from the prefrontal lobes of the contributors are wonderful, flawed, and very, very real. What you have here is a really good read by a bunch of really talented people. You should buy this book. You should read this book. You should give copies to your friends. Somewhere in the middle of the book, I suddenly realized that I felt like that little kid again, turning that squeaky spinner rack, revealing wonders.

Those kind of heroes? There's no such thing as too many.
By imaginepeace
Must. Sleep. Can’t. Stop. Reading.

The Deli Counter of Justice is well worth the loss of sleep. I had to resist the urge to start right back at the beginning after the finish.
In a world where we are saturated with superheroes and their antics, The Deli Counter of Justice is a refreshing break from the norm with its peek behind the masks.
Centered around, but not really about, retired “cape” Carl and the deli he now owns, each story plays a significant part in bringing to life the vital world that the editors have created. Even the introduction by television writer Mere Smith sets the perfect tone for the stories that follow, describing the volume’s subjects as showing “us that their frailties are our frailties, that weakness need not break us – that in fact, confronting (and not fighting, but making peace with) our own imperfections may be what saves us all in the end.”
Starting with Eric Sipple’s “Pixelated” was a brilliant move by editor Arlo J. Wiley. Not only is this story full of superhero action, but it’s also the story of Carl’s daughter, and why not start with the person closest to him biologically? Sipple’s story provides witty dialogue and insight into the thoughts of a newly developing hero.
Rahne Ehtar’s “Without Masks” is like dubstep for the written word. Ehtar builds mystery slowly and then when the story is at its perfect peak, she flips the script leaving the reader to question everything they thought they knew.
Probably the biggest standout in this volume is Alyssa Herron’s “Delilah by Proxy.” Far from the traditional superhero story, this tale is incredibly moving and truly shows the most human elements behind the superpowers.
In another stroke of editorial brilliance, Wiley concludes the volume with Paul Smith’s “… A Hero Only One” which is the story of Tommy, Carl’s sidekick, who is the person closest to him emotionally. This story is the grandest in scope and can easily spawn a dozen spin-off characters and storylines.
Every story in this volume blends together perfectly, and all I can say is “When’s the sequel?”

God's Message to the World: You've Got Me All Wrong, by Neale Donald Walsch

Is it possible that everything we think we know about God, and what God wants, is wrong?
Could humanity's ideas about all this be the greatest inaccuracies . . . ever? Would it matter if they were? The author of the multi-million-selling Conversations with God series places the question squarely before our world in another blockbuster book that could move our species closer to true spiritual revolution on the Earth, changing humanity's future for the better, forever.
In direct and spiritually challenging language, Walsch here exposes the many ways in which he believes that humanity completely misunderstands God. He then describes in clear terms how the world could change overnight if humans accurately comprehended what God is, what God wants, who they are in relation to that, and to each other. Walsch calls this the “Missing Data” which, if ever embraced and acted on by our species, would create a spiritual revolution across the globe, bringing humanity both inner and outer peace at last.
Does anybody care why our species has been such a failure? Does anybody imagine it has not been? Does anybody want to know how this whole situation can be turned around in the virtual blink of an eye? If you do care about those questions, then you will read this book.

NEALE DONALD WALSCH is the author of nine books in the Conversations with God series, which have sold over ten million copies in 37 languages. He is one of the major authors in the new spirituality movement, having written 28 other books, with eight books on the New York Times bestseller’s list. His life and work have helped to create and sustain a worldwide spiritual renaissance, and he travels globally to bring the uplifting message of the CwG books to people everywhere.

Review
"A time-honored teaching tool . . . Walsch's main argument--that people should question everything they've ever thought about God--is intriguing when he considers how human assumptions have in fact changed over time. His look at the church's shifting messages on things like racial equality and marriage helps him make his point . . . [God's Message to the World] is for true fans of his work, looking for more of what they've loved in earlier titles."  (Publishers Weekly)

* A Newly-Selected "Main Selection" Title (One Spirit Book Club (Bookspan))

“[Walsch] is a recognized authority on interaction with whoever or whatever our modern God is . . . [God's Message to the World] intends to open a dialogue here on the earth plane about what God really is and really needs to be . . . whether your customers agree with Walsch or not, this is a book that will stimulate discussion and debate.”

(Retailing Insights)

"A true phenomenon of New Age spirituality . . . [Walsch's] God is not a superhuman male nor a vengeful judge, doesn't make requirements of us, and is not separate from us. He maintains that God 'is using Life in order to experience itself.' . . . Walsch's humane and affirming ideas are at the heart of what many humanists, agnostics, liberal Christians, and even some atheists believe. Offering New Age spirituality amenable to reason and spirit alike, Walsch's latest book [God's Message to the World], like his previous voluminous works, should appeal widely to individual seekers."

The content of this book is Humanity's last hope.
By Steve Kostov
Five stars! I just finished reading this book and it is beyond wonderful. I believe humanity is ready to take the next step in its spiritual evolution. I believe that on a subconscious level most human beings know that everything in this book is true, not in relative terms, but in respect to their basic core logic, reasoning and most personal and private value system, regardless the God they bow to - and their hearts have known it for awhile.

I believe that on a conscious level we carry out and act out the old beliefs due to social hypnosis, societal momentum and conditioning and the primal survival instinct to fit in and conform to the relative safety of the herd's ancient ways.

Times have changed. It is safe to stop now.

I can't stress enough the importance of each individual who reads this book, to share it with others. Most of us share on social networks (like Facebook) countless small talks and silly information to make the time pass. Nothing wrong with that. But if we also share this book and/or the information contained in it, we may, after all, make it as a species and thrive.

Our children know all that information instinctively and they know it intuitively. That is, until we "yank" it out of them by hammering a millennia old principles into their precious minds, principles in which even we do not believe in, in our heart of hearts.

Give our future a chance. Give your children a chance. Change is imminent, regardless resistance. We will either make it as a species or we won't. Do what you know is right, when no one is watching. When no one is judging. Give Life a chance, for we are running out of time.

With the fervency you used to share the Bible.

If we don't, Life will.

Thank you kindly.

A gemstone!
By Matthew J. Schimpf
It's perhaps banal of me to offer a review of Neale Donald Walsch's latest masterpiece "You've Got Me All Wrong," as I am so smitten by his work that a clear charge of "bias" can be levied against me, and fairly so.

Neale takes us through a revealing examination of current epistemic dogma that has so surreptitiously, yet pervasively, impacted - nay debauched - all of our psychological, social and spiritual systems for thousands of years. The crux of the examination falls squarely on the following interrogative postulation: "What if there was something about God/Life/Truth that you didn't know, the knowing of which would change everything?"

Neale fluently and expertly delineates how a 180 degree turn in our presumptions/assumptions of the nature of God would not only be enormously beneficial to humanity collectively, but also individually and specifically. As a quick example, imagine if for just 30 seconds everyone on earth knew, absolutely knew without equivocation, that we are not separated from God (or anything else) and never were, nor will be. How might that brief insight affect ....... culture, society, consciousness, life?

This is a joyous, compelling, introspective and disarming standalone work; that is: it's not necessary to have read any of Neal's other contributions to be inspired and roused by this one. There were a couple of nit-picky editing errors, but they in no way detract from the ebullience of this book. The writing is crisp and concise, the ideas flow with both beauty and logic and the overarching message is nothing short of divine. Lord, if I didn't know better, I'd swear Neale had a personal Conversation with God.

Endearingly 5 stars on the board, 200 to keep it real.

Are you willing to OPEN YOUR MIND?
By Bones Rodriguez
The journey of reading Neale Donald Walsch gets better with each book. It takes a lot to explain and fully interpret new ideas to an audience so used to it's own beliefs, and yet Walsch patiently communicates these wonderful ideas with such genuine likeability that the reader absolutely MUST open it's mind and accept them. I don't know why I started writing in the third person there, but I can say that I pre-ordered this book, and was so excited when it got here, that I have finished 1/2 of it in the first afternoon, and am eager to finish it tomorrow.
Yes- I am writing this while only 1/2 way through.
That's because it is already mind-expanding and so wonderfully presented! The book takes on a pattern that you can see developing as it goes, and the logical steps lead to conclusions that FORCED me to re-evaluate what I believe and what the world believes, and how we demonstrate it.

PLEASE READ THIS BOOK, along with all the others!

Two best friends. One emotional adventure.
When Reed Young and Jonah King unearth some mysterious remains at their favorite beach hangout, their summer is thrust into an exciting tailspin.
Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, they embark on a heartrending journey to find out the truth . . . and make it right.
But neither of them expected the secrets they would find.

***Reader note***While Lines in the Sand is a standalone novella, appropriate for younger readers with only some mild language, it is intended as a prequel to Two Blue Lines, which continues Reed Young’s story as he’s forced into a situation nobody wants to find themselves in at sixteen. Read and enjoy at your own discretion.

What an outstanding way to start a series, I can't wait to watch this teen grow up and see what life deals him
By Cyn
I think Lines in the Sand is a great beginning to the series, the author knows how to hook a reader. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. This is a short read just to setup you up for the rest of the series. Reed and Jonah have been best friends for years, they love hanging out on the beach and just enjoying life. Just doing normal young teen boy things but what makes this story so different is the way the author pulls you into it, hooks you and keeps your heart in your hand.

One day they found something that scared them to death and their mind went wild thinking up all that it could mean. What they found was a truly touching story that will almost bring you to tears. I can’t not wait to see how these boys grow and find out what all they get into.

This author knows how to spin a tale to give the most to her readers. I do not read YA but I have been hook on this author for a while. I thought if she wrote it, it must be an outstanding read. She has never let me know before and this time is no different, she has me hooked. I highly recommend this book for the wonderful clean read it is.

Lines in the Sand is a solid prequel and sets the stage for Two Blue Lines.
By Theresa H. Hernandez
The summer before high school, Reed and Jonah discover a bone and a strip of leather with the name, Lettie, etched into it on a south Texas beach, thus launching an adventure that changes both of their lives. This novella, a prequel to S.C. Montgomery’s Two Blue Lines which takes place three years after Lines in the Sand, delves into Reed’s character. We learn what makes him tick, how his friendship with Jonah came to be so strong, and are introduced to his attraction to Melissa.

The book is a quick read that stands well enough alone. It’s not particularly deep, nor gripping, but it’s a good story and I learned to love Reed and Jonah in the short 39 pages. I’m rooting for both of them now that I’m well into Two Blue Lines.

Plot
The plot is about the mystery of who Lettie was and what happened to her. I was surprised when I learned the truth about Lettie and never saw the twist at the end coming. While the primary plot is the mystery, the novella does a fabulous job of establishing both Reed’s and Jonah’s characters so that on page one of Two Blue Lines, I knew these two boys and could understand why they react the way they do. The story of Lettie is interesting and gives us even more insight into them, but I almost think that’s secondary to the character development.

Characters
The characters are the strongest aspect of this novella. Both Reed and Jonah are utterly believable as 13-year-old boys trying to figure out where they fit into the world around them, life in general, and girls in particular. As they unravel the mystery of Lettie, they learn more about themselves. The relationship each boy has with his family, and their friendship with each other were well crafted and came across as authentic.

Bottom Line
Lines in the Sand is a solid prequel and sets the stage for Two Blue Lines.

Short, Simple, and Spectacular!
By Myra (Pieces of Whimsy)
This is a prequel story to Two Blue Lines but the style is very different as the characters are as lot younger in this book. Lines in the Sand follows Reed Young at the age of 13, on a Summer adventure that redefines his life. This is not a YA book even though the rest of the series is, it reads more as a middle grade story, but it is still very enjoyable and gives you a better insight into Two Blue Lines.

I like reading books in a male POV because it's not something you see too often. Reed was only 13 but I found him to be fairly mature for his age, he still had his boyish innocence and curiosity but he was also able to understand some pretty deep concepts.

The story was only very short and simple. it was enjoyable and I really wanted to find out who was on the beach and why. This story is a pivotal moment in Reed's life that redefines everything, where he discovers what family really is. It is only a very short story but it gives a lot of insight into Reed's character.

I would really recommend reading this book if you're planning on reading Two Blue Lines as you really get to see Reed grow and understand some of the references to 'that Summer' that are throughout the book. The books are written in very different styles at the character is at different stages if his life throughout each but they are both very well written and even though Lines in the Sand was obviously younger, I still really enjoyed it.

3.5/5
