A Wonderful Read From Two Very Talented Young Authors!

While in New York recently, I learned of these two young, talented authors. I was impressed with the fact that they were 12 years old and willing to begin and follow through with the tedious and daunting task of writing, editing and creating their own book. And what a great read it is! I sent it to a young nine year old family friend of mine who read it from cover to cover and exclaimed: "Is there anything better than reading about zombies!"
He just loved it and I know anyone who reads this wonderful book will agree.
So to parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents I give this advice: If you are looking for a gift that will fit what today's young people are into...this is the book for you and them!
A simply wonderful book! I am hoping these young authors will do others!

Not so bleak

I was quite happy to finally see a book two in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one and looked forward to a continuation of.the characters from book one. We get to see them throughout this one. I gave this only four stars because it felt like it took forever for our H/h to just get together much less GET TOGETHER. I sure hope we get to be at the weddings in the third book, and also see some of Beck's and Nami's life together. We didn't really get that this time. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who read the first one. Enjoy!

I love this series!

I love this series! Rereading as book 4 will hopefully be out soon. Missed doing a review the first time around. Book 2 picks up from the end of book 1. Dewi and Beck are on a mission to locate a dead beat dad. Hoping a bus to try to catch him, Beck finds his mate in the bus driver. Nami is suprised to say the least when a tall, built, hot, blond blue eyed, white guy, kisses her, says mine, and hops off the bus. I loved Nami and Beck's story. Nami is strong African american women who has spent the last decade raising her younger siblings, after the death of their mother. I loved Beck's frantic search for his mate and than his slow and careful wooing of her. Very sweet. I loved the addition of Martin, a new Enforcer Dewi finally caved and added to their family. In Nami Dewi finds a mother figure, a sister and friend. As Nami and her siblings are adopted into the pack so is Dewi's little pack by them. Now it is getting Dewi into a wedding dress and making her brothers happy. Nami is just the women to do it.

I like that a perfectly ordinary woman of color

A refreshing change from the fact the heroine's occupation always needs to exciting, powerful or glamorous for her to be validated. I like that a perfectly ordinary woman of color, doing a very ordinary job can become the mate of an extraordinary wolf shifter. The intensity of the attraction is off the charts but the heroine's responsibilities to her family forces the couple go slower than either would like. But when they do come together, it's explosive and all fans of shifter romances will be more than satisfied with the prowess of the delicious Beck! Dewi and Ken, from the first novel, are trying to find their way as well. When Nami's family history draws all the lovers and their mates into danger, tough choices must be made and Dewi must trust her judgment as Enforcer of the Pack to keep them all safe.

Not Quite the Eternal Champion

I gave it 4 stars because your universe was full of action, danger, and epic adventure.

The characters were full of flaws and self destruction, but in epic proportions.
All these made for a memorable ride to the end.

But I couldn't give it 5 stars. Why? Because I just couldn't connect with the Main Character, MC.

I've read the old classic Elric of Melnibone, heck I've even played the old RPG. I can see where you were trying to go with this series. The creation of a tragic hero. A being trying to find his way back from such a long and dark road. And no matter how close, he still finds himself in the shadows and in the end...maybe not even a shadow of the light on him.

But unlike Elric, I just couldn't connect. I kept thinking, why is this book taking so long to end? Why hasn't the MC already found his path out yet? Any path? In Elric I remember with fondness that the old warrior had some measure of hope at the end of his long road. Even if it was to be the Eternal Champion, at least he WAS a Champion. But sadly, I couldn't get that same vibe from our MC in this novel. So it left me feeling lost and disappointed in the end.

Perhaps in another time and place this novel would have ended differently. But for me, it left me unsatisfied.

Mr. Eisenlauer you did good. Thanks for the ride. I'm getting off for now.

Read it in just a few sittings

Knowing a little of the equestrian world helps, but for anyone who likes a good read, not essential. Definitely a page turner.

Stopped reading at the beginning of ch7

I knew from reading other reviews that the story had several different characters highlighted and it was difficult to follow who was who, but that isn't an automatic deal-breaker as my brain is capable of keeping characters straight. I even knew from other reviews about the fact that much of the writing thus far had been written as if it took place in England because of the words used, but it was quite bizarre once I actually encountered it. Only one character was English, but the author wrote as if the story took place in England and while the author is British herself, the words used just didn't fit and seemed contrived. But all of that I could get past. It was the start of chapter 7 when a new character's viewpoint was introduced...that of the horse the victim had been riding when she'd been killed. Seriously? Maybe if the book had been intended for little girls it wouldn't have been a big deal, but I'm fairly certain it was written for adults and not children and I think most adults would find the parts written in the viewpoint of the horse to be a bit silly.

Sorry, Miss Wilbraham. I wanted to like your book, but chapter 7 turned it into a waste of money.

This book jumped around so much, it was hard to keep everyone straight. There were some good story lines here that could have been books on their own, but all together, they didn't make sense. It was written as if it took place in England....which it did not. Were the characters English? Who knows. Not worth the read.

A clearly written intro book on extremes

I recently used the software accompanied to this book kindly made available by the author and was led to know more about this book and the author's other works. I like what I saw and think the author has done a supeb job in explaining the difficult theory in plain language and in the context of data analysis. Thus it is an "action" book instead of the "just theory" as with most other books. The book provides a balanced treatment of different approaches to extreme value analysis. Personally I prefer the generalized Pareto approach, though theoretically the point process approach may be very neat, if it can be realized.
I think extreme value theory in general is an important statistical area, since in practice one may be forced to deal with analyzing extreme events, such as in financial engineering, environmental or climate analysis, or network design. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who want to learn this area from one of the leading researchers.

good on theory, excellent on applications

This book is the most current text available on the theory of extreme values. The author eloquently provides us with an understanding of the theory and it vast applications. It is intended for researchers students and practitioners. So it provides an in-depth account of the theory with many real world examples. It contains an excellent up-to-date bibliography. Important theorems are presented with their implications but without mathematical proofs. Computations are done in SPlus. The author provides an appendix on computational aspects that tells the reader where to go to download examples and find the SPlus functions that are used.
Topics include classical extreme value theory and models, threshold models, extremes in dependent stationary cases, extremes for some nonstationary stochastic processes, the point process approach, multivariate extremes and some special topics including extremes in spatial processes and the Bayesian approach to extremes (with examples employing MCMC methods). There has been a surge in publication of texts on extremes, some theoretical and some applied. This text and a few others are good at intrroducing the topic to the uninitiated and placing emphasis on applications for the practitioners.

This book is a good blend of necessary theory supplied with numerical examples (including financial time series). Despite being short, it is very informative and reads easily. However, if you want more than just a good introduction you have to move forward in time - there's been much progress in Extreme Value field since 2001.

For there to be a good sister, there must be a bad sister and in the case of Jamie Kain's, novel THE GOOD SISTER (St.Martin'sPress) there are three sisters. Sarah Jade Kinsey is the oldest and she's not only beautiful, smart and loved by all, she has cancer. Rachel Anne Kinsey, 18 is the middle one lost in the shuffle. Finally, there is Asha Nadine Kinsey, 15 who is the youngest and becomes Sarah's bone marrow donor not once, but twice. So that leaves us to wonder, who is the good and not so good sister?
The Kinsey's are a unique family living in Northern California's Marin County. The parents, Lena and Ravi, former hippies offer no rules to live by, girls raised in a commune, they're just drifting, holding on to one another for some kind of support. Sarah, the oldest believes she's the protector but as the disease ravages her body, it slowly destroys the family. They're shaped by the knowledge that someone within the unit is going to die.
When Sarah passes, it's called an accident, but was it? She was hiking with her sister Rachel, who never hiked before. That's when the secrets, mysteries, betrayals and even revenge begin to surface. I could feel grieving in the writing, while each character searched for their own truth. Ultimately, each one had to embrace what they stood for, searching through many questions, frequently coming up with too few answers.
THE GOOD SISTER is the first young adult novel Jamie Kain, has written. The YA genre is very popular right now, but I hope THE GOOD SISTER is marketed to a broader contemporary audience. I was drawn into reading her book because of the characters, the story as well as her writing, so I hope THE GOOD SISTER reaches as many readers as possible. It's a wonderful novel.

Fraught with emotion...

There was an accident. There used to be three sisters. Now there are two sisters. Sarah, Rachel and Asha Kinsey live in Northern California with their mother who divorced their father when the girls were younger. Sarah and Rachel have already graduated High School and Asha is just fifteen years old. The entire family is traumatized by Sarah's death.

Sarah, the glue that held the family together. Sarah, the girl who was known as 'cancer girl' because she beat cancer twice. Sarah, Asha's dearest of all. Why Sarah? She lived to defeat cancer yet she died on a stupid hike on a stupid trail with her sister Rachel there by her side.

Each of the three girls gets a chance to tell their story and each story combined with the others will eventually lead to the truth about what really happened to Sarah and why. No one in the family is immune from the hole that Sarah's death has left in their lives. Rachel acts out in ways that will nearly destroy what's left of her family. And Asha, young Asha will not stop searching for answers until she knows everything. All three of the girls have secrets and in the end, if more than one person knows your secret, it isn't a secret anymore.

Author Jamie Kain gives us three very interesting characters in these sisters. And even though Sarah was already gone in the very beginning of THE GOOD SISTER, we are given the perfect vehicle for her telling her side of the story. Admittedly, I was distracted with other things going on in my world when I first started reading this book but by the time that this novel hit its stride I was hooked. Fraught with emotion and a building mystery surrounding Sarah's life before her death, THE GOOD SISTER was indeed, a good read.

so I know the love, jealousy

I come from a family of four sisters, so I know the love, jealousy, hate, loyalty and all encompassing relationship you can only have with a sister. This is one of the few books that I have ever read that completely nails that bond.
The book begins with Sarah's death, and her view is a huge part of the story. It felt reminiscent of The Lovely Bones, with her narrative woven throughout the story of her sisters trying to deal with the aftermath of losing her. Asha and Rachel are basically raising themselves, left alone by a pseudo-hippie mother, who is really just too self-involved to parent, and a dad who has moved on to a child free life.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, because I feel like this is a book that needs to be experienced by each person. Maybe it won't strike others as deeply as it did me, but I think it will have an impact on anyone who has a sister.
The writing is so descriptive of the feelings that the girls invoke in each other, "She has a crazy way of doing that. I've never figured out what her game is, or where she gets her nerve, but she is an energy vortex. When she's near, I feel like I need to go take a nap.....I want her to stop sucking the energy out of me......But I can still feel her there, sucking, sucking, sucking.".

The story is intriguing, the writing is beautiful, I cared about the characters and their story. There was no happy ending, just a broken family learning to move forward.
As Asha said, "She is everything I have ever known about love, and she's taught me how to know this feeling now." That is what a sister is to me too.
I loved this book, and it's one of the few I willingly give 5 stars. I can't wait to see the author's next book.

I recommend this book to any new teacher or those interested in becoming one. I am preparing myself to become a teacher and this book helped me realize that this is not something that you easily jump to, which made me appreciate the process even more. Thanks to this book I look forward to one day experience my first year of teaching and I will know what hints to look for and who to count on for support.

Priceless Advice!

As a teacher, I wish I had this book when I started my first year! So many of these events happened to me and I would have loved to know I wasn't alone. The advice in this is wonderful, and the author really does cover everything, sugar coating nothing. It is invaluable advice that all first year teachers should read, just to know they are not alone.

"Exhale: A Breathe Series Novella is young adult romantic suspense written by Elena Dillon. Jasmine, her family and their friends are enjoying Thanksgiving together when a knock on the door changes everything. She's stunned to see her father, Michael, standing on the porch. It's been 10 years since he walked away from the family and 4 years since he's even communicated with them. Jasmine's brother, Caedan, is furious about his father's reappearance and indirectly blames him for their sister Daisy's kidnapping and death, and Jasmine's kidnapping, as he was not there to prevent them. Easton, Jasmine's boyfriend, refuses to shake Michael's hand when they're introduced. Things get even more convoluted when Detective Hollister calls Jasmine and tells her that the man who kidnapped her and her sister is willing to reveal where his other victims are buried, but only if she comes to visit him in prison. Jasmine's horrified at the thought of facing him, but she feels it's something she has to do.

Elena Dillon's romantic suspense story is well-written and very entertaining. Dillon deftly involves the reader in Jasmine's family history and their relationships. The characters are well-developed and quickly become part of the reading experience. Michael, the returning father, has a flawed history but is still larger than life and very charismatic, as is his daughter, Jasmine. Exhale is all that a short story or a novella could be; there are several plots and crises running throughout the work, and I easily felt as satisfied and involved with the novella as I would have with a full-length novel. I'm looking forward to reading other stories in Dillon's Breathe Series. Exhale is highly recommended." ~Readers' Favorite

Just when you think everything is under control something else happens!

Book 1 and 3 are written from Jasmine's point of view. After much struggle trying to become a good older sister after her oldest sister Daisy is murdered, Jasmine was instrumental in achieving some closure for her family. In this short book it is Thanksgiving holiday and once again Jasmine is home from college and with her family. When her father (who was forced to return to Ireland 10 years ago and hasn't been in contact with them since) returns unexpectedly, the dynamics of the family are up for grabs. If that isn't enough to deal with over break, Jasmine is asked to go to the jail and talk to the monster who murdered her sister. If she will go, he promises to tell her where other victims are buried. Jasmine is all about finding out the truth, so she hides her trip from everyone but her father, and goes to the prison. Needless to say, the visit doesn't remain a secret, and everyone is upset by her actions. It only gets worse when the next day the prisoner is missing...
I am saddened to think that this is the end of my time with these people. The books have a way of seeming like the characters are real people. Although I am not the target age for these books, I still recommend them for mid-teens and up. They are well written and exciting. What are you waiting for? Get your copies and enjoy them all!

Elena Dillon has s true talent for weaving a wonderfully clean yet suspenseful romance that will keep you mesmerized from the first word to the last. I loved reading about the Rourke family and how they pull together to get through difficult situations. This book had it all - laughs, tears, fears, drama and good old pranks! I loved every second and highly recommend this book, this series and this MUST-READ Author!!!

Exhale – the third in the Breathe series by Elena Dillon delivered. My only problem is, will I get to visit these people again? With the unexpected return of a family member on Thanksgiving and demands from an old enemy causing seismic shifts in this family the story only gets richer. If you haven’t read them all you’re falling behind because you will enjoy!

If you are struggling with the Reading section on the SAT, this is the book for you. The words covered in this book come out most frequently on the real test and you will do well, only if you did the studying! If you are still not convinced, just buy the book! Studying more won't hurt and you won't know for sure whether this book is useful until you experience it for yourself.

This book is perfect for those struggling not only with SAT vocabulary but also in conquering the reading section of the SAT. You'll be surprised at the amount of vocabulary knowledge you will gain from Mr. Shin's book. When I found out that Mr. Shin had released ...

When I found out that Mr. Shin had released a second edition to the vocabulary words. I knew that without a doubt, I would have to get it. The first one was extremely helpful. The way Mr. Shin outlined the words and orientated the book made it quick and effective for me to learn these words. It is a one of a kind book, where you will find benefits to investing your money into it.
