A more leisurely, well-guided introductory tour to role-playing games

"Chapter 1: What is a Role-Playing Game?" Ah, yes, the introductory chapter of almost every tabletop RPG ever published. Sometimes it's one page, sometime four or more. I suspect most RPG designers hate having to write it, and most of us "seasoned" (ahem) players don't bother reading them any longer. But there's always that hope that new blood will come into the RPG hobby; or that more recent generation of players will be curious about "how did gamers play back in the day of Gygax and Arneson (the creators of Dungeons & Dragons)? And what is this "OSR" I keep reading about online?"

"The Role-Playing Game Primer and Old-School Playbook" (RPGP&OSP) aims to provide an answer to those questions, go further than the inevitable "Chapter 1", and does an excellent job doing so. It's a good time to come into fantasy role-playing games. The latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons is unquestionably informed by this "old school" playstyle. Between the boxed D&D Starter Set, the free online Basic D&D Rules PDF, and a number of other free variations based on old versions of D&D such as OSRIC, Swords & Wizardry, Labyrinth Lord and Basic Fantasy RPG (by the same author, Chris Gonnerman), there is no lack of options to get started.

On the other hand, there was a somewhat lively online discussion recently about how inadequate much of the published material out there remains in showing new players how to play and, especially, how to be a good gamemaster (i.e., GM, or Dungeon Master, or referee). Back in Ye Olden Tymes, we really just had to figure it out ourselves. And, in many cases, new players skipped the reading almost entirely (at least at first) and were just introduced to a role-playing game and a particular playstyle by an experienced player.

RPGP&OSP doesn't go so far as to be the end-all, be-all solution to these issues, but instead focuses on what, in my opinion, matches the general consensus of the style of play most prevalent in the 70s and early 80s. Although it uses the previously referenced Basic Fantasy rules as it walks through its examples, there's little here that isn't completely applicable to any of the games I mentioned above, including the new D&D. Think of RPGP&OSP as similar to "The Missing Manual" book imprint for software that many use to get a deeper understanding of their productivity software. It shows (not tells) one possible playstyle, one possible approach to "old school".

RPGP&OSP is just over 60 digest-sized pages that covers about 4 to 5 times as much guidance material and walkthroughs for players and GMs than is usually found in any "Player's Handbook", "Core Rules" or "Dungeon Master Guide". It's very readable with a nice, lean layout and large type. It fits nicely inside any D&D boxed basic/starter set, and is small and inexpensive enough to give as a gift or a loaner to new players, especially if you'd like *them* to be a DM someday!

I do want to point out, though, that there is not a lot that is "new" here. The free PDF "Quick Primer for Old School Gaming" by Matthew Finch is an obvious inspiration. RPGP&OSP just takes it to "11" with its examples of character generation, running an adventure, a sample dungeon and how to run it, and advice on creating old-school style adventures. It also provides a high-level examination of the different OSR games available. But most experienced GMs and Players, especially those already playing OSR games, will find very little of use here. We're not necessarily the intended audience, though I do plan on buying a few copies as "stocking stuffers" and to hand out at games at my Friendly Local Game Store (who ought to be buying some of these and sticking them up on that D&D/Pathfinder shelf).

Great for old school, not quite for newer games

On the one hand it is a really good introduction to old school role playing games. Not just how to be a good player and make characters, but how to game master. So I would have given it a 5 star.
But. And this is the big bad but. While I agree that newer games tend to be rules heavy with everything defined and limited to a level only an ancient Pharisee would love.
He spends a frightful load of time complaining about modules containing a story line. Or of skills based games. Or of characters having personality. He seems to feel that characters are no good unless it is such a randomly rolled and stereotyped thing they can be killed off by the dozen with no loss at all to the player. Who replaces it with an equally meaningless random instant character. And the same for modules.
So only a 4.

An excellent introduction to old-school RPGs (and an argument for their continuing relevance)

A quick and straightforward guide to starting out in tabletop RPGs. Excellent for the aspiring GM, but also useful as a short introduction for anyone new to the hobby.

Most importantly, Gonnerman makes an excellent case for the unique advantages of "basic" RPG systems, particularly in allowing a character to live out a lifetime of adventures from one campaign to the next. Thus each character develop a unique story and personality over the course of actually experiencing these things, rather than everyone sitting down and coming up with an entire life story before anyone can even start playing. He also argues well for the benefits of being flexible as GM and not making adventures overly predetermined -- unpredictability is unfortunately something in short supply in the age of elaborate, fastidiously structured, carefully scripted campaigns. Tabletop RPGs are not video games, as Gonnerman reminds us, and we make a mistake by letting the limitations of one format guide the direction of the other.

From browsing the online community, Gonnerman's Basic Fantasy RPG might not be the best of the so-called retro-clones (I wouldn't know), but there certainly aren't many people as passionate about and committed to the hobby of old-school RPGs. This is reflected in all of his work, but particularly in this book, which is a fine summary and argument for the continued appeal of RPGs.

How can you use this book for a Masters class if you cannot even read what is assigned because you constantly have to find the correct page. Terrible Product.

I purchased this book at the beginning of the year for my nursing class and was reading from it today and as I approach the later chapters, I notice the pages of the book are off!!! I will be contacting amazon about this and will be needing a complete refund!!

This book have all the required but they are not in order. As you are reading they chapter will no longer be the same one. You must look through and find the next page number which is not in correct order. This is very frustrating.

"School is a place of art rather than a place of business. If you understand this fundamental reality then things can begin to move forward. Unfortunately, most of our opportunist politicians have little understanding of art, or its necessary conditions, and most of our greedy business people would love to get a cut of all of the money our society spends on public education (with the recent controversy over MOOCs being a prime example of this). Yet we have an opportunity now, which should not be passed up, to reflect upon the vocation of the school administrator. For if the school is to be a place set apart from the bondage and dangers of practical life then the purpose of a school administrator surely is to be the agent who works on behalf of the school to bring this about. Yet how many supposed "school administrators" not only fail in this task but actually "collaborate" (in the negative sense) with all of those in the outside world who wish to turn our schools into job training centers!"

About the Author
John C. Wilhelmsson is a professor of philosophy at San Jose State University. As a professor John is known for his thoughtful and independent interpretations and intuitive teaching style. Born and raised in San Jose, California John became interested in having a career in philosophy after reading "Fides et Ratio" (Faith and Reason) by Pope John Paul II. He made Edith Stein the focal point of his research because John Paul II mentioned her in this work. John was awarded his master's degree in 2007 and his thesis "The Philosophical Contributions of Edith Stein" was named best in his college. John is currently both a successful businessman and an instructor at San Jose State University.

A well written book about education

This book written by John Wilhelmsson is a book regarding essays about education. At least that is what I got out of it. It gives ones the perspective on MOOCs (massive online courses). Online courses over the years have seemed to evolve immensely in all states. It is changing the way teaching is taking place. As time passes everyone could if they wanted enroll in online classes. The possibilities are endless. Lot of university teachers will have a lot of competition in their hands soon and will need to figure out how to keep up with the pace of online classes. From this book I got that if teachers were to over a blending of the classes such as part online and part in class. There is a chance for survival. This will help attract students to want to find classes that are a blend. Students feel that they miss the interaction you get with a teacher and dont do as well. There is definitely a threat in my opinion after reading this book regarding reading and speaking your mind. When you bring massive online courses into education you have the ability to forget how to be persuasive in our writing. It seems the whole point of MOOCs is to save everyone money, but who is really saving the money. I dont know if a university would make it without professors. Professors use to be the key and bread and butter that would hold a university but if we step away from having a one on on relationship with our professors and connecting with them, how do we connect with others. Personally I wouldnt want to live in the world of online courses. I think that Wilhelmsson did a great job putting together this book. It was very informative and will be passing this book along to fellow teachers as well. He makes you sit back and think about the future and how you can choose to change it.

The art of teaching is a long essay/short book on how MOOCs (Massive Online Courses) affect negatively on the actual learning from frequenting proper and physical classes. Although this IS NOT a invective against online University courses in general, it IS on MOOCs.

MOOCs are in fact pre arranged courses, prefilled in computers and theres no possibility for the student to ask for clarification or (an most important thing!) argumenting something you thing is wrong; that is you have to take for granted that the infos and lessons you are taught are true. This is something you can normally do in a smaller online course, since there's a teacher availabe to explain if you don't understand something.

I'm not here to judge the content of the book, I'll just say that I agree with most of what it's written in it. And I think it would have been more incisive if only they'd skipped the whole initial part where the author give some anecdotes on why hes a teacher, how he became one ecc ecc.

Of course the author wanted to assure you he knows the subject from experience and I like he gave the teacher point of view and admire the fact that he says teaching is a "calling" and not a job, we could use more teachers with this kind of vision.

Anyway I liked/appreciated what he writes as introduction to the main theme, I wish he did it in a different and less verbose/redundant way.

Worth buying in physical form

Hands down this is a great read. I was going to say the best YA book I’ve ever read (which it is) but then I realized that pigeon holing like that did it an injustice. Yes all the main characters are teen-age high school students but I personally think the author did such a great job in storytelling and character development that any age will enjoy (remember I’m over 50). Normally I find that even in a good YA story as a full-grown adult I have to do a lot of sighing and counting to 10 (sometimes higher) and reminding myself that the characters are teenagers so of course I find their emotional angst and behavior to be exasperating. I didn’t have to do that ONCE in this novel. Which isn’t to say there aren’t characters I didn’t want to smack, there are (and what good book doesn’t have characters that work your nerve?) Unlike a lot of other YA authors Aria Michaels did not write a novel that is just a non-G rated fairy tale about finding true love at the age of 17. Yes she had a love story/romance element but it was not the driving force of her story. She did not claim to have a story and then simply write a grown up harlequin romance with teenagers. She has a well-developed plot that not only held my interest it made me lose myself in the plot.

Aria Michaels says the genre of this book is dystopia, thanks to that seriously over-rated series that is now an even more over-rate successful movie chain I was worried that I wouldn’t care for it. Obviously I worried for naught. She did a great job of creating a world set in the dystopia genre that as a reader I could completely believe might come to pass. If you have a YA it allows for great societal discussions over the dinner table.

I think I can sum up how please I am with this read by saying that normally I purchase my Amazon books from the 99 cents list, this time I paid 4.99 and think it was worth every penny and then some. My only complaint is I want to read the sequel and it isn’t released yet.

Wow, Killshot had me hooked from the very beginning. Liv is a young 17 year old orphaned girl, struggling to make it through high school. Wanting nothing more than to get away from her small town and everyone in it. Being separated from her younger brother was killing her, and she would stop at nothing to be reunited with him. Doing everything in her power to keep the promise she made to him; not even if the sky is falling. Who would have known that those words would truly mean so much in this story, in Liv's future. The one night of comet gazing turned her life and those around her upside down. That night, Liv also found an undeniable connection with Zander, her best friend/foster sister Riley's boyfriend's cousin. Who would have thought that their connection would turn out to be so much more. As Liv, Zander and friends fight for survival, they come across so many threats and obstacles; losing loved ones but also gaining allies. So much is revealed in their journey as they encounter different people and creatures.

I often found myself crying, feeling the pain, loss, defeat, and the unknown that these teenagers had to deal with at such a young age. I loved watching Liv, Zander, Riley, Jake, and Falisha evolve throughout the story. Growing stronger, protecting one another, becoming family and never giving up. I can not wait for the next book to come out so we can see what these brave young souls do and end up. Great job Aria Michaels!

Killshot was an interesting read, from its first paragraph on through to its last. The characters were well developed, which made it easy to imagine what they looked like and what they were feeling emotionally. Time and place were so clearly described that the reader can grasp what it felt like, for the characters to be in those surroundings. Aria Michaels created smooth transitions between memories of past events and back to the precent time. I found the storyline to be a successful combination of science fiction, romance, psychological thriller and intrigue. I am looking forward to reading the second story in this new series.

What would you do if the unthinkable happen to you?

If your have read any of Carolyn McCray and Ben Hopkins books you already know the amount of research they put into their work. These two are the most prolific writers I have ever encountered with a list a mile long of their accomplishments all of them great books to read. I have had the privilege to work as a reader for them and I have to admit that each and every book they send is better than the last, this one being their latest.

Have you ever read something that really, really hit home? Well be prepared! This series is going to be one of those. Cam and Harper are the most unusual women. They have been to hell and not ashamed to let anyone in on the secrets they found there. Cam's little boy was kidnapped and to this day she still prays to find him. She has not given up on one thing, HOPE! She dotes on her remaining children, triple girls. Harper however is not in the same boat, she only wished she was. Her husband, murdered her only child. No hope ever will bring him back.

Two women so completely different meet and come together, ready to share those secrets that they both learned while they were there. They form a company called Empty Crib, where they work with couples that have had their child taken. The experiences that they both have gone through allows them to help guide others through the process, even though each time forces them to relive their own hell, each and every time.

What did I like? In this case it's really hard to explain.... first, I sincerely liked the story line. I would think that every parent has this fear no matter what age their child or grandchild is or even a loved one, so to have someone that has also gone through the torment with them would help. Second, I loved the characters, so different and yet so complete as a team.

What did I dislike? I guess this is obvious! How can anyone ever take another person's child? Sometimes you can have empathy for them because maybe they have lost one but most of the time it is so horrendous that it is unthinkable. But life throws these curves of all kinds and there is nothing we can do about it.

What will you like? A Story that will reach your core and touch it! Even though it's one that we never want to go through, this is filled with such heart, laughter, tears, compassion and determination. It will take you on a trip that will touch you as no other has. The people that Cam and Harper meet and help will have their lives changed. Some good and some not so good but changed never the less! This series will be one that you will want to follow all the way to the end. I for one will be putting it on my "to be 're-read list" for sure.

So far Ben and Carolyn have written the first short story called "Child's Play", then the main book "Amber Alert" and followed by another short "Rock-a-bye Requiem". You won't want to miss any of them. Child's Play introduces us to Cam and Harper and their experiences. Then Amber Alert takes us into their cases, plus introduces us to Detective Eli Curtis. These two women also change his life. Join me to find out how and the incredible journey of Cameron Holden and Harper Pembroke.

The Book Grew On Me

I was given a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review and that I shall be glad to give. This book is quite a bit different from the others I've read by this author and it deals with a woman who lost one of her children 7 years before- he went missing and they still haven't found him alive or dead so she and her best friend who also lost her son in a different way form an organization to help other families who've lost a child and are looking for them.

First off, let me say that in general, I'm really not into child abduction books. I don't have kids and it's not something I'm interested in reading about in general but this story grabbed me as I went along. I found irritating qualities to all 3 of the main characters- Harper, Cam and Eli but that also gave them realistic qualities that you could get attached to as the story progressed because even with some of their irritating habits, they were all trying to do what they thought was right. Even though there were a couple of suspects in the book, I did have my eye on one person as the story went along and what leads to the apprehension takes a different turn. All in all, there was enough drama, mystery & even some humour, to keep me interested in this book and I think if you enjoy a good mystery, even if this book's main topic isn't something you're normally into, you'll end up enjoying the read.

A parent's nightmare

Great new series by these two authors. The have managed to tackle an issue that haunts almost all parents. What would you do if your child was abducted? As a reader, you follow along as the two main characters try to find a missing child. And they do this all while reliving the horrors of the their own missing children. Cam and Harper opened Empty Nest to help parents deal with the terrors of a missing child, but you also get to see their struggles as they try to heal after they own horrors. Cannot wait for the next book in the series.

fun and exciting

As a grandmother, I often check out books that are suitable to buy for my older grandchildren, books that may not be labeled as young adult. Beautifully illustrated by Maxine Gadd, Kandide and the Secrets of the Mist, by Diana S. Zimmerman is an excellent choice if you or you older child/young adult loves fantasy romance and fairy tales.

First, let me assure you that once you work your way past the daunting list of critical praises that make up a good portion of the front of this book, slog through the encyclopedic history of Kandide's World, and arrive at the map, there is a really good story here midst the ornate descriptions, so stick with it, or skip those parts entirely. The actual story is great and the illustrations will definitely please young readers.

This is a tale that lays bare the falseness of eternally striving to achieve perfect beauty. In true fairytale fashion, this story lays bare the flaw in our own eye. Zimmerman frankly deals with the perception of physical beauty as determining ones worth. Yes, she wraps it up in flowery prose, but she hangs it out there, nonetheless. Vanity, lust for power, the irrational but pervasive fear of people with crippling disabilities, and the callous shunting aside of those less-than-beautiful who live among us forms the core of this tale.

Kandide herself is a little pain in the backside, but don't quit on her. She is dealt a harsh lesson in compassion, learns to love, and sets out to right some wrongs. I enjoyed this tale enough to overlook the sometimes florid style of writing. It doesn't ruin the book, and some readers will like that style.I give this book 4 1/2 stars!

Recommended fiction for the family

If you are looking for a captivating fiction for the family, Diana's "Kandide and the secret of the mists" is a perfect choice. A story of a winged fairy kingdom and a journey of a princess turning young queen. It is about tolerance, love and growth. The plot is captivating and the story educational. The prose is a good example of what parents want their kids to emulate in the English language. I am happy to learn that Kandide's story will continue..

The Source of Mussorgsky's Famous Opera

Translated from a play written in verse by Alexander Pushkin, this is the source of Modest Mussorgsky's famous opera of the same name. Those familiar with the opera will find it interesting to compare the two versions, because some of Pushkin's characterizations and plot points were actually altered in libretto of the opera. Both the play and the opera are very famous, especially in Russia. However, both were also extremely controversial in their day, particularly due to the subject, which concerns the overthrow of a Tzar.

The story comes from Russia's "Time of Troubles", somewhat analogous to England's "Wars of the Roses". Both were tumultuous periods in the histories of their respective countries, when the crown changed hands many times, and never seemed to rest securely on anybody's head for very long. Tzar Boris tries to run the country well, but his administration is handicapped by the wide-spread suspicion that he has had the rightful heir-apparent, a young boy, murdered. An ambitious former-monk attempts to pass himself off as that rightful heir-apparent, asserting that he was not murdered after all. Many of Boris' enemies, both foreign and domestic, are willing to believe him.

The story is a bit unsatisfying in that it ends with the overthrow of Tzar Boris, and omits the remainder of the story of the ambitious "Young Pretender". It feels as though the story is unfinished. However, it seems that Pushkin actually did intend to continue this narrative in succeeding works, much as Shakespeare wrote a whole series of plays concerning the succession of English Kings during the "Wars of the Roses". Unfortunately, Pushkin was prevented from completing his project, both by government censers who were not happy with a story about the usurpation of a Tzar's thrown, as well as by the author's premature death in a duel.
