I liked it better than Book 1

I have previously read W.C. Hoffman's Twins of Prey and was very pleased with the story. I thought the skills the twins were using were believable and put to good use. You can read the review here.

However, when it comes to sequels, I do not set my bar very high because I believe that most authors hold out too much in hopes of dragging out a series of books and possibly make more money. I am VERY pleased to see that Hoffman did NOT do this in Twins of Prey II: Homecoming. He gave me exactly what was needed to make this a solid and adventurous story that I literally had a hard time putting down. This something I cannot say about all the books I have read throughout my life including those I have not done reviews on. There have been only a few that I just could not beyond reading a quarter of the book.

I am afraid that I cannot talk too much about Twins of Prey II: Homecoming in fear of giving away a lot of the story thus giving you spoilers. I can say that the twins made it out alive because the authors description on Amazon provides that information.

In the second of three books, the twins have to come to grip with them having a sister and all three of them, Drake, Tomek and Annette Henderson, all have a fight for their lives on their hands. They work to fight against a corrupt system and drug ring as well as "organized" thugs from a trouble kid's home.

I do feel that Hoffman's use of life and death scenarios, greatly advanced not just the story but the characters including their mindsets. It is because of this weaving of a tale or "spinning a yarn", I look forward to the third and final in the series, Twins of Prey III: Ascension, that comes out April 1, 2016.

In closing, I leave you with one final note about the book itself. On the last pages, after the story ends, W.C. Hoffman asks a couple of questions to build a mindful scenario and give you food for thought regarding book three. Those were the exact questions that I was pondering at the end of the book after reading it on my own and without leading. I know the next is the final book in the series but my hopes is he will continue to write other books and more than just this series and his short story Inheritance. I wish him well in any endeavor but feel there is talent in his writing ability and storytelling.

The book and series are well worth the time it takes to read them. I feel the second book builds from book one and, in my opinion, actually is better than the first in the series.

Really good book

I loved the mystery in just about every page. This is the only type of book I'm interested in that is all consuming and takes me away for awhile. Can't wait to read book 3 this year. On another note, if the proofreaders could do a better job of correcting errors this would have been a perfect 5 star rating imho. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be on the edge of their seats.

I love the way W.C. Keeps his readers on the edge of the chair. His books always leave you wanting for more. I can hardly wait to get to the next page to see what is going to happen. I rated this book as well as book one a 5 star because I love suspense. I highly recommend Twins of Prey to those who like the same things. I am anxious read book #3!

Don't Let Confusion Stop You From Finishing

The Time Roads is a difficult book to categorize. I settled on Alternate History as the setting is around the 1900’s and some things are familiar. Other things are not at all familiar. Eire is the ruling island in this time line and science has gone in a different direction adding a touch of steampunk.

I am glad I read The Time Roads but I found it to be weak in several areas. The story follows several characters on a journey that takes many, many years. I found the world building a little lacking and the switch from following one characters to another confusing. That confusion was also there as the time line progressed. I don’t want to add a spoiler so just let me say if you get too confused just keep reading it will all come together by the end of the book.

As the blurb says this is a group of braided stories that interact but still leave a lot unsaid. The discovery of the time roads is part of each. If you like books with an unusual concept and a different take on history and time travel this is the book for you. I found I liked it much better after I finished and had time for everything to settle into place.

intricate structure, execution fell flat

Often times I want to tell an author, “You had me at structure.” Give me an atypical form—something eschewing the usual A to B to C linear plotline—and you’ve charmed me from the get-go. For instance, the linked short story form. I first fell in love with it a long, long time ago when I picked up Steinbeck’s Pastures of Heaven, and since that time the genre has given me a lot of reading joy: Dubliners, The Things They Carried, Winesburg Ohio, Go Down Moses, A Visit from the Goon Squad, Cloud Atlas, and the list goes on. So it was with a lot of eagerness that I picked up Beth Bernobich’s The Time Roads, a collection of four braided short stories with shared characters and setting, all dealing with the impact of time travel. As I said, she had me at structure. Unfortunately, she lost me at execution, though not always, and not fully. In the end, the whole I think was better than the sum of its parts and thus worth a read, but it’s a close call and were you to ask me another day I might say otherwise.

The core setting for the novel in story form is an alternate history where Ireland (Eire) is a sprawling empire, with the Anglian Dependencies submissive to the Empire but restless. Europe, meanwhile, is a squabbling collection of states, including Prussia, Austria, the Balkans, the Turkish states, and so forth. The setting is roughly between the cusp of the 20th Century to early 1914 (no coincidence this is the year of our World War One). The stories focus on the young Queen of Eire, Aine Lasairiona Devereaux; her spymaster/guard Aidrean O’ Deaghaidh; a pair of brilliant sibling mathematicians—Siomon and Gwen Madoc; and a handful of advisers, dissidents, and scientists. The cycle is made up of four stories, briefly summarized below.

“The Golden Octopus” (1897): Aine comes suddenly and unexpectedly to the throne just as the world is beginning to feel tremors of political unrest. As she tries to keep a firm grip on the Empire, both abroad and at home, she also sponsors a fervent young scientist who believes he is on the verge of creating a time machine. Even as he works on his invention though, someone begins killing the country’s bright young mathematics students and Aidrean O’ Deaghaidh is set to investigate the horrific murders.

“A Flight of Numbers Fantastique Strange” (1902): Siomon Madoc is a young mathematics student whose sister Gwen, once his partner, is in a sanitorium undergoing treatment for madness (she has been saying nothing but a string of prime numbers for some time now). When his fellow students start being murdered one by one, Siomon comes under the watchful eye of Aidrean, who has been sent to investigate the murders. Siomon, though, is sure the solution lies somewhere in his and his sister’s work on the relationship between numbers and time, and that his sister’s strange litany is part of the answer.

“Ars Memoriae” (1904): Aidrean O’ Deaghaidh has spent some time in the sanitorium and is still seeing a psychiatrist now because he is tormented by phantom recollections of a past that seemingly never was, as when he meets one of the Queen’s advisor’s and remembers the man’s grief over the murder of his daughter—a murder Aidrean remembers being tasked to investigate—though now the lord talks happily of how successful his daughter has been ever since she graduated from the university with her degree in mathematics. Despite his affliction (which has improved), Aidrean has been reinstated to his commander rank and is sent by Aine to the kingdom of Montenegro to learn what he can of plots against the Empire. As he learns more, however, he begins to wonder if the worst enemies are without or within the Court.

“The Time Roads” (1914): Political unrest in Europe has worsened, even as the “Anglian problem” has turned violent, with the Dependencies demanding more autonomy from Eire. Assassination attempts, a horrific new weapon, and home-grown and outside-entity conspiracies, find Eire on the brink of potential destruction that would usher in a world-wide conflagration. With Aidrean’s help, Aine seeks a path to a different future.

The structure of the cycle, no surprise, is one of its strengths. Perhaps the strength. While there is a broad center to this collection—the Eire setting, the main characters, the troubles in and outside the Empire—that center is reborn with each new story, something having occurred due to the “time fractures” as they’re called so that the events of the prior story either never happened or happened in some changed form (for instance, a Lord’s daughter killed in one story is alive and well in the next). I loved tracing those threads of what stayed the same, what never happened, and what happened in modified form. It made for some stimulating, attentive reading, and I always enjoy this kind of web of linkages form. “A Flight of Numbers” is particularly disjointed in this fashion and it was by far my favorite of the stories, the most compelling and most atmospheric.

That was the good. The bad fell into the execution of the other aspects: characterization, pace, and plot. None of these characters really stood out for me. Aine was a pretty idealized young monarch and her romantic feelings just didn’t click with me—feeling far too rushed and shallow. Aidrean was a bit bland, and considering the role he plays that’s a real blow the reader. Other characters are pretty stock and forgettable; I can’t say I really cared all that much what happened to anyone in the book, from minor to major characters. The first person narration didn’t help here, as too much of the characterization was told to us from within, a relatively dull method in comparison especially to the unusual structure.

The pacing has issues throughout for me. It seemed to me there was little differentiation of what to share and not share, what to focus on and what not to focus on. Tiny details of setting or clothing would take up an equal amount of time to major plot/action events; it felt like everything was given equal weight despite not being of anywhere near equal importance. I confess this was driving me crazy by the end of the book. And while I’m all for a politics-centered book, I needed a bit more context for what was happening here. Names just get tossed around with no sense of distinction or power: Prussia, Russia, Turkey, Alba, Montenegro, Serbia. Clearly we’re working with a Great Power analogue here, but once you’ve put me in an alternate history where England is subservient to an Irish Empire, I need a bit more to go on—is everything else the exact same? Am I supposed to read Prussia as Prussia as we know it, but not Ireland as our Ireland and England and our England? Certainly anyone not particularly well-versed in WWI will have even worse of a time, or simply shrug and say—“these guys must be bad . . . “—which is a hardly a victory for an author. Finally, the ending was a bit too neat for me, but I obviously don’t want to go into the details as to why.

So overall The Time Roads was a disappointing read. I said in my intro it is still a worthy read, that the whole of its effect is greater than the details of its parts, and while that latter part is definitely true, I’m not wholly sure about the first. It’s possible my ingrained bias toward the short story cycle form is winning me over more than it should and thus blinding me to the full impact of the book’s shortcomings. I’m almost sure that had this plot, these characters, and this style been presented in “normal” novel structure, I be rating it a 2 or 2.5. But you know, structure. I’m a sucker. 3.0

Fans of Smart Steampunk Will Love The Time Roads

If you could change the present—or the past? Would you do it? There’s more at stake in The Time Roads by Beth Bernobich than just simply fixing the present—or preventing a dark future. Often, the roads of time tell intimate and personal tales of tragic defeats and sacrifices, or small and private victories that prevent a dark future from coming to pass. The Time Roads tells the story of the fictional land of Éire who wishes to solidify its presence in the world through technological (and political) advances. Enter a bevy of characters interested in studying the passage (and manipulation) of time in order to meet both their own and their country’s demands.

For me, this story started very strong. We’re introduced to a young woman on the cusp of becoming a queen, both trying to navigate the complicated words of politics and personal relationships. I loved reading about Áine. She was a strong woman who is forced to make some tough decisions—and sacrifice personal relationships in the name of her country. Later in the story, we’re introduced to several other point of views, some of which will have you second guessing the characters (and yourself), trying to determine what has happened and what remains only in the minds of the characters as a past that never came to be.
I think the strength of this novel lies in the expert descriptions of the world and the intrigue. It’s very easy to get caught up in the overall story and be able to visualize yourself in this complex and detailed world. Even with the Victorian elements mixed with steampunk, it never felt forced or unbelievable—really, it felt like this is the past that should have happened, or very well could have. Blended with the political intrigue and danger and it made for an often tense and thrilling read.

I see a tremendous amount of potential in Bernobich’s writing. She has a fantastic eye for detail and a remarkable gift for making her world feel fully realized. That being said, I think the storytelling would have been stronger had it focused on less characters. Sometimes, as they say, more is less and here I think that perfectly sums up most of the issues that I had with the story. As the perspectives jumped several times, it was a little confusing to follow (especially with blended timelines, or timelines disappearing) and something that I think would have worked a bit better in a longer novel. As the novel progressed, it was harder for me to maintain a connection with characters that I either didn’t know much about, or only knew about vaguely through other characters. It definitely would have heightened the overall story had it been focused on one or two point of views, but I can see why the author used multiple viewpoints as I believe the main focus was really the time travel, and how that affects the individual people of this world—and not so much the characterization.

Overall, I think there’s a great balance of romance, mystery, adventure, and political scheming, so I believe this would definitely appeal to anyone who is looking for smart, Victorian-style, steampunk. I will be excited to see what Bernobich comes up with next because I think it will only get better from this point.

Fan fiction

For me, as a person that loves reading almost everything that I can get my hand on, fan fiction is an area I have tried before, but I have not intensively explored it. What I find interesting about it is the way literature is created based on something else - in this case a computer game. As I am not a fan of computer games, but my husband is, I did start this experience by only knowing half of what I can expect. To be honest, its interesting - its interesting to see how characters from a computer game get a well developed personality through a book, and after asking my husband to read it to - he confirmed, playing Dark Souls after reading this book makes the experience more personal. Interesting approach, and interesting read.

Pleasantly surprised

I’m usually not into the whole “dark fantasy” genre, but I figured I’d give this a chance in order to support a fellow fan fiction author. And I must say, I’m really glad I did. Within the first few pages, I was already hooked. I’ve never played Dark Souls or the sequel, so I went into this completely blind, so to speak. Luckily, that did nothing to lessen the experience. The story is written very clearly and in a way that is inclusive to everyone, including people like myself who know nothing about Dark Souls. It’s tragic, suspenseful, heart-warming, intelligent, and leaves you at the edge of your seat. I will definitely be reading this again.

"People like to think of themselves as snowflakes, but they really just aren't."

I went into this not really knowing what to expect. I haven't read much fan fiction and I have only played the first Dark Souls but this book was extremely engaging and full of beautiful imagery that has piqued my interest enough to want to look into the second game.

'"It's easier to just not believe in the good things until you see them and accept all the bad things until you are proven wrong."'

The story is insightful, entertaining, suspenseful and heart wrenching while still being heart warming.

a fabulous book for pre-teens

When I was 10 years old I was an avid t.v. watcher. Much to my mother chagrin that's all I did everyday. After many arguments and threats she decided to take matters into her own hands. She put me on punishment. No t.v. for a month. This was beyond punishment to me. She might as well had told me not to breathe again. I refused to talk to her for days. One day out of the blue she came into my room and handed me a book. We were very poor and to 'waste' money was something that was frowned upon. So she gives me this book and tells me that books are what she used to 'watch' when she was a kid. I grudgingly took the book. I quickly lost myself in Ludell's life. She reminded me of my mom. She's curios and full of life. Ludell's freinds became my frieds. At 10 years old I finished reading Ludell in less than a day! A couple of years later walking aimlessly around the public library (I now 'watched' more books than I watched t.v.) I found Ludell and Willie. I shouted as loud as I could I was so happy. I knew Ludell and Willie belonged together. Now at 21, I'm looking for Ludell to pass down to my cousin. We have similar taste in books. It's a shame that Ludell is out of print. I wish I would have kept the one I had but sadly it got mixed up in some things that were donated to the Salvation Army. Whoever was the lucky person to receive Ludell, I know they loved that book as much as I did.

My first favorite author and favorite book

Ludell, was the first book that I read through my school RIF program. It was written by a black author and I told everyone I knew about it. I was in sixth grade and this book changed and enhanced my thoughts. It is a book I will cherish always. I continually passes it on to young ladies and they all have their own personally experience about this book. I have lost my original copy however, I was able to order it again. I lost Ludell and Willie, however, I do have Ludell New York adventure. My first and favorite author will always be Ms. Brenda Wilkenson, she open my eyes to the art of Reading. Please ask you local bookstore to order this book for you. It has some much of pleasant memories of when a Child could really be a Kid.

This is a wonderful preteen book. .

Ludell is a wonderful preteen book. I read this book as well as Ludell and Willie and many many more when I was 11yrs old. Of all the books I read as a young girl, this was my very favorite. It really helped me to understand some of the things I was going through at that time in my life. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down until the last page. I cant wait to give it to my girls. Anyone looking for a charming coming of age book for youngsters glued to the television should consider this book.

frightening finale

The end is near for Victor, Clearly, Valeri and Fabian, or is it? This third installment reintroduces fascinating characters from the previous books, as well as several more. Blood Moon provides a resolution to the series and reflects the ritual named in the title with detailed descriptions of occult practices. As with earlier installments, this one is filled with suspense, but was perhaps a tad slower. Still, this was an enjoyable read and is great for those looking for a Fall/Halloween story.

What a great finale to an amazing trilogy by a great new young author. Taylor Ann Bunker really has proven her writing chops with this one. I literally could not put this down. I laughed, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat reading this. She created such amazing characters through this series and the last book really had me on edge as to what would happen to them. Great book, great series for a young Indie author. Very impressed.

Acción incesante tras cada página, junto a una profunda descripción de los sentimientos de los personajes ante cada una de las situaciones y pérdidas que se producen tanto en esta entrega como en las que se arrastran de las anteriores, que permite disfrutar un libro muy íntegro. Sin embargo, mientras lo leía, no dejaba de cuestionarme el innecesario alargue de esta saga, que finalmente sólo logra disminuir el interés. Además, la relación de Jace y Clary prácticamente pasa a segundo plano, con algunos momentos emocionantes, pero que no destacan. En realidad, es la tónica de toda la novela: está bien, pero no destaca.

Awesome and Varied Giant Monster Tales!

This is an outstanding collection of giant, threatening creature tales! Despite the cover, just under half of the 21 stories collected focus on Godzilla-type city crushing mayhem. However, all are enjoyable and cover such a wide range of possibilities and styles it shouldn't be an issue for the reader. You're bound to revisit an old favorite and to discover a new one!

Although not arranged in this manner in the book, here's the eras the tales cover:

For starters, you've got the older 'classic' and 'weird tales' era stories: 'The Monster-God of Mamurth' (Edmond Hamilton), 'Ooze' (Anthony R. Rud), 'The Valley of the Worm'*** (Robert E. Howard), 'The Eggs from Lake Tanganyika' (Curt Siodmak), 'The Dunwich Horror'*** (H.P. Lovecraft), 'The Island of the Ud' (William Hope Hodgson), and 'The Monster of Lake Lametrie'*** (Wardon Allan Curtis).

In my humble opinion, the first two and last four stories in this catagory ALONE make it worthwhile to purchase! It's interesting to note the prevalence of 'urban fantasy' themes within this category as well. While one or two are somewhat head-scratchers as to their inclusion ('Deviations from a Theme' for example), there's not a stinker in the book.

I was particularly amused by 'The Giant Cat of Sumatra', involving Egyptian goddess 'police', managed to include both a certain Victorian-era detective and mention of a certain Lovecraftian Old One!

I highly recommend this tome for your collection of monster fiction!

A great tribute to '50's style monster movies. People criticize these stories and call them B-movies, but done right they can be pure entertainment. The majority of the stories in the Big Book of Monsters are done right. Well worth the money.

I'm a huge Correia fan, so I got this for his short (which was awesome) but really have enjoyed the other stories as well. Quite a few ententriharken back to the beginning years of sci fi and it is like looking through a window in time.

Great New Series!

Chronicling the adventures of Joe, Kevin, and Omar, this series is a really great read for any young male sports fan. It’s filled with unique tales each occurring at a different MLB stadium, as well as relatable characters and experiences for boys around an elementary and/or middle grade age group. I’d highly recommend this series to any young boys who are involved in athletics, specifically baseball. The numerous historical baseball facts, legends, and players the books include, give its readers teams and players (both of the past and the present) to look up to and may even highlight those they already root for!

This series is one that will appeal to any young, male, sports fan in elementary or middle school. It is a fun, light, and enjoyable read centered around Joe, Kevin, and Omar—the “Baseball Geeks”—and their quest to return the Glory Ball back to where it belongs. Young readers in elementary or middle school will be able to relate to these characters and perhaps even be inspired by the boys’ determination and drive to fulfill their ultimate goal. What a ride!

This book is supposedly the last in the Straw Man series. I rather hope there are more -- I like the characters and the entire concept was clever. The basic idea is that there is a sort of secret society that is thousands of years old. These people consider themselves evolutionarily different from the rest of us -- they believe we have succumbed to a virus that makes us altruistic. They are not and are responsible for many of the worst events of history. That is an original idea for a mystery thriller. The hero and heroine battle these people through three books. In particular, the protagonist's twin brother is one of the worst. This would make an interesting film -- the star could play both the bad guy and the good guy. The first book in the series was interesting, but I had doubts. The second one was much better (and the writing is probably the best of the three). The third one makes a perfect end. I recommend these books if you like this kind of reading.

Another dark, apocalyptic thriller... but totally anticlimactic.

Just finished up Michael Marshall's trilogy, and I'm having a difficult time separating Blood of Angels out of the pack for this review. For the uninitiated, go back and start at the beginning, with the Straw Men and The Upright Man novels, and work your way through, or you may be in for some confusion. The series is planted firmly in X-Files territory, and, as with the X-Files, there's lots going on, enough that keeping track is essential: In Marshall's world, surreal, horrific conspiracies and cover-ups abound. In fact, he goes as far as to reference the X-Files early in Blood of Angels, during a drug deal about to go strangely wrong.

Here, our Mulder and Scully are ex-CIA intelligence agent Ward Hopkins and FBI agent Nina Baynam, who, after the bloody events in the previous books, are now hiding out in a small cabin, secluded on the edge of the Washington State forest. Their semi-idyllic life is cut short with the sudden - but not entirely unexpected - arrival of Nina's FBI boss, who's come with news. The story jumps into gear as they learn of a new, possibly female serial killer, and the kicker - the escape of Ward's murderous twin brother, a serial killer called The Upright Man, who is - was? - part of a powerful, world-wide cabal of killers who believe the rest of us are infected with a communal sort of virus that makes us behave more-or-less like sheep. They view themselves as the wolves in this demented scenario, and therefore, well, we're ripe for the picking.

Unlike the X-files, however, which presented its version of space-aliens, governmental cover-ups and general weirdness as a growing mystery waiting to be uncovered, Marshall has structured his premise in a much more straightforward manner: There's a big group of serial killers out there, firmly entrenched in all walks of life, and they're planning something BIG.

Quite an apocalypic scenario, eh? Unfortunately, Marshall wimps out on us. Nothing against his writing per se: the books in and of themselves are entertaining enough, taken as a breezy way to pass the time at the beach; the characters are well-drawn and there's action and intrigue aplenty, and we're treated to Marshalls' sly, cynical humor and cultural observations which helps break up the otherwise oppressive atmosphere. The problem is that (unless, perhaps, there is to be another book, say...) for all the big, ominous setup, nothing much happens. And in the end, we don't uncover much more about the Straw Men than we already knew from the first book. I'd hoped Marshall would explore this group he's created (a group that is not so unlike the terrorist organizations operating in the real world) and to see how deep the evil really goes, but no. Instead, we're basically told again and again that they're devious and untouchable mass-murderers. Great. Whooo. Creepy.

I was left feeling feeling vaguely unsatisfied, like I'd choked down a stale pastry and cup of lukewarm coffee for breakfast, instead of having the artery-clogging plate of butter-smeared waffles and eggs and hot, greasy bacon and hash browns that I really wanted. For all of that, because the premise is so intriguing and holds so much untapped potential, I hope Marshall is inspired to give us another, final chapter in the Straw Men legacy.

Reed Arvin delivers with Blood of Angels

Blood of Angels was the first Reed Arvin book that I have read, and it is not going to be the last. Blood of Angels delivers on all levels and introduces a cast of characters that is very interesting.

While you are reading from the perspective of a lawyer, this is not a court room legal thriller, this is a book about revenge pure and simple. There are multiple sub-plots and action that keep the story moving along, and you will not want to put this one down.

Reed Arvin writes in the first person, which I thought would be a distraction, but I really enjoyed the smooth style. I would recommend this book to all who are looking for an interesting plot, and a fast moving book that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat.

About the Author Buck Martinez has been a corporate executive for over 30 years. He has been responsible for a diverse number of functions, including generation development, labor relations, and strategic planning. He is also a nationally-acclaimed speaker on Clean Energy. Recently, Buck launched a non-profit organization, Student ACES, to provide leadership training, mentoring, and internships for high school students. Buck has always been very involved with students. He has coached many youth sports teams, mentored young men, and has participated in numerous speaking engagements at universities throughout Florida. While in college, Buck was captain of the baseball team from his sophomore through senior seasons. He received numerous honors but is most proud of the Scholar Athlete Award. He has a bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas University and an MBA from Nova Southeastern. He is a graduate of the Boston University Leadership program, and a member of the Lifeworks Leadership 2014 class. He resides in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, with his wife of 33 years, three daughters, and four grandchildren.

Excellent Investment

This a valuable book for both parents and young adults. Its written by an individual who's advocation throughout his successful professional career and very busy life-style has been to mentor and coach young people. I believe this book is written from the heart and mind based on education and experience with the sole purpose of assisting young people make good choices in adolescent years to help them get on the right path for a successful adult life. Its a quick easy read well worth the time.

Great book and fast read on leadership for young professionals as well as a great reminder for veterans of business and athletics. Buck exemplifies the importance of "leadership" and why "management" is not the same. His book reflects his outstanding character, stewardship, candor, and discipline. With the quotes and inspirational stories of what it takes to be a leader, the book truly gives one a foundation of how we can make a difference no matter the tile, position, or scenario.
