Loved the book--want the pencils!

I purchased at my local craft store and enjoyed this book. The author is sponsored by Tombow and so their pencils are promoted. The techniques are lovely. I am not wild about the projects and designs but I still give the book a five because of the techniques and ideas for maximizing the pencil art. I'm saving up for the recommended pencils!

The best 49 pages for new colorists in one spot

I just started with my coloring hobby, but so far, this book is the best. Even with all of the coloring resources on the web, & all the You Tube how to 's, this book has excellent, simple, step by step techniques & how to's. Includes techniques & for both graphite & colored pencils. Nice to have all in one book. Colored & B&W illustrations give many great ideas too - even one on for Zentangle shading. The best 49 pages for new colorists in one spot.

A Great Addition to YA/Sci-FI Genre

Every time I hear about a new book that has to do with time travel I get all excited and just have to get my hands on it even though only a few have truly impressed me and that I love beyond all measure I still gravitate towards books that have to do with the subject matter and Loop did not disappoint. Loop was actually very entertaining and I couldn't get enough of it.

Time travel in all the books I've read so far is always secretive stuff but in Loop Akins created a world in which everyone knows about it, people who have the gene are micro-chipped and everything is regulated. There were multiple timelines going on, past and future selves of characters showing up, and time jumps which I actually found fairly easy to keep up with.

As far as Bree goes the girl is awesome with an amazing voice. She is funny as can be, I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit being inside her head. Her mom is in a coma which she is highly suspicious about the circumstances surrounding that situation, her future self is doing things in the past which is frustrating her including being in a relationship with Finn which her present self is totally baffled by the idea of that. What I loved the most was that the book really did focus mostly on the plot and the romance was there but the characters kept their priorities straight.

Speaking of Finn, I loved him just as much as Bree. Finn already knows Bree, the future Bree in an intimate level but the present Bree we know has no clue about any of it, the only memory she has of Finn is the scrawny kid she took hostage during her brief trip to the 21st century while on a class assignment while screwing up a side job that she was hired to take on by a gangster who uses shifters for his own personal gains in the 23rd Century. Anyways Finn is a sweetheart he will do whatever it takes to protect Bree and cares for her deeply, unfortunately present Bree can't stand him at times since her future self has him holding onto secrets that he wont tell her.

I know all this can sound confusing but trust me when you start reading the book it's not. Akins did a great job making sure everything makes sense and it is all very easy to follow. Loop was incredibly fast paced with tons of action and never a dull moment.

There are also a ton of secondary characters who play key roles in driving the plot. I really thought I knew who the bad guy was marking that aspect of it predictable until the bad guy was revealed and I was just sitting there dumbfounded I did not see that coming at all.

Overall even though there were quite a bit of seriousness to the book it felt like a fun lighthearted time travel book and it is a great addition to the Sci-Fi genre.

A Fun, Light-Hearted Sci-Fi Novel!

I couldn’t tell you the last time I had this much fun reading a novel, I needed to read a book like Loop. Karen Akins’s debut tackles time travel in a manner that is not only engaging and light-hearted, but still complex and intriguing. Akins fills Loop with snarky humor and dialogue without sacrificing any of the gritty, intricate details that are commonly associated with sci-fi novels. I devoured this book with a huge smile on my face and it totally made my day that much better.

Bree goes to a school for Shifters (time-travelers) and Transporters (they help time travelers coordinate their destinations). Her school assignments include time traveling to the past and delivering goods to the past, but she doesn’t have the ability to change the past. When Bree accidentally kidnaps a boy named Finn, she gets entangled in the past and violates the shifter rules she’s sworn to obey. Nothing is turning out like Bree expected and she is not endangering herself, but the lives of Finn and her mother.

I absolutely loved Bree, she was such a hilarious and brave main character who refused to let people push her around. When Finn storms into her life, acting like the sun revolves around him, Bree doesn’t take his garbage and she refuses his request to protect her. Bree doesn’t need a guy to protect her — heck , she saves Finn a few times throughout the book and still has time to tell him off. Did I mention that she wolfs down french fries and has an irrational fear of squirrels? Bree is such a wonderful heroine and I loved watching her unravel the mysteries surrounding her mother.

The romance in Loop was one of my favorite aspects of the book because it had such a magical vibe to it. I loved the strange way that Akins brought our two characters together and how she defied typical romantic conventions when constructing Bree and Finn’s romance. I was so happy that Akins didn’t make Finn the perfect god-like love interest, she made him flawed and so damn likeable. It doesn’t matter how infuriating or clingy Finn is, readers will absolutely love his character (even when they find out that he isn’t the best kisser).

Loop introduces some extremely epic technology and time-travel concepts that aren’t difficult to comprehend. There were so many cool devices in this novel that I just needed in my life and someone needs to get on making the Pods from these books ASAP. The tech here is extremely futuristic and imaginative — these gadgets aren’t the ones you remember from watching The Jetsons. Usually time-travel books are filled with so much timey-wimey concepts that my head starts to spin and everything seems so convoluted, but not in Loop. Sure, Akins does introduce a plethora of explanations to explain time-travel, but they’re excellent in that they explain some features of it and leave the rest to the imagination. Explaining something completely just helps take all of the mystery and wonder out of it, plus it makes everything 1000x more complicated and mundane (a computer doesn’t seem quite as amazing when you just think of it as wires and circuits).

I really had such a pleasant experience reading this novel from start to finish (despite the fact that the villain is slightly cartoonish). If you’ve already finished the Tempest trilogy, Loop is a perfect book to read as a follow-up because this book also has an irresistible mix of sci-fi and romance elements. I wish I could time-travel into the future so I could read the sequel now, where’s a TARDIS when you need one?

an action-packed story with humor and excitement

Bree Bennis lives in the twenty-third century where, because of a special gene mutation, she can travel anywhere in time. It's been years since travelers had to hide their unique skills but Bree knows better than most that time travel is still greeted with suspicion and even disdain by those unable to travel.

Bree used to be at the top of all of her classes. Now her biggest talent seems to involve making a mess of things.

After her solo midterm to the twenty-first century goes spectacularly wrong, Bree knows she's in big trouble. Failing to complete her mission is one thing. Accidentally revealing herself to a boy and sort of taking him hostage? That could get Bree expelled. Or worse.

The only option is to try to sneak back and try to complete her midterm before anyone notices. The only problem is Bree ends up missing her target destination. She finds the boy--Finn who is now three years older and at least three times more attractive--but before she can fix anything Bree is pulled back to her own time. With Finn. Who claims that he and Bree's future self are . . . dating?

Bree has plenty to do between hiding Finn and not flunking out of school when she learns that a rash of accidents have been taking out time travelers around the school. Turns out the attacks are anything but accidental and with Finn's help Bree soon realizes she might be the only one able to find the person responsible and stop them before their timeline is irreparably damaged in Loop (2014) by Karen Akins.

Loop is Akins' first novel and the first half of a duology that completes with Twist.

Loop dives right into the action when Bree's life goes from bad to worse after everything goes wrong on her midterm. Bree manages to take everything in stride with only a few choice (and possibly made up) swear words to help. As Bree delves deeper into secrets about her own past (and future) she also realizes she might be at the tip of a very big problem--one her future self knew Bree would have to try to solve.

Akins skillfully combines science fiction adventure with a fascinating mystery to create a story that is as original as it is fun. Although some plot points--particularly clues left for Bree--are often obvious, Bree and Finn's journey as they try to understand what brought them together more than makes up for it.

Bree's world is filled with casual wonders ranging from automated travel pods to Pegamoos, all of which are brought to life in vivid prose. In a story that literally spans centuries, the world-building to top notch and gives Loop a strong sense of place no matter where or when Bree finds herself.

Bree's voice is distinct and snappy, making this book conversational and completely fascinating. While the romance in Loop is a big draw, Bree also has a great character arc as she tries to reconcile who she is in her present with who she seems to be in the future. With massive conspiracies, clues left across time, and a displaced romance that is often baffling to Bree, Loop is an action-packed story with humor and excitement.

If you like Native American adventures of the nudist kind you will like this one! This author writes vivid accounts of what happens with a nudist girl and her friends at the resort. Another Good Summer Read

While I enjoyed the first book in the Naked Crow series, I found I enjoyed this story even more. The author depicts the naturist lifestyle faithfully and I found he was accurate in the details of Native American lore. Believable characters even if they are not fully developed. All in all, an entertaining read while catching rays by the pool.

Cute and fun read

This is not something I normally would have picked up but the author sent me a link to grab it up as a freebie on Amazon and was excited for reviews so I decided to check it out since it was a quick book as well.
I found this book cute and very easy to get into. More on a level for young teens for sure. It went by quick and was pretty fast paced. Had a sweet romance involved and the usual dramas of a high school girl. I feel this author has a bright future.

A great first attempt

This is a cute young adult romance with some paranormal overtones (the main character Caitlin is a young witch). She has a major crush on Angelo, and when she says a love spell, he falls for her. Feeling guilty about it doesn't stop the fun though. Follow Caitlin's adventures with friends as she learns to deal with bullies.

There are a few words that are used incorrectly, but this reader suspects that English is not her first language...so give her a break for a quick, lighthearted romance.

This book was cute(ish)

This book had a cute(ish) idea, and the ending was fun, but it needs a lot of work. The dialogue felt forced, the action jumps ahead so often, there are a LOT of in-consistencies, and so much of the action is simple and juvenile at best. I think if the author takes a lot of time and work and edits the crap out of this thing it could be a fun book. As it is not, however, I am just glad I found it when it was free on Kindle....

MAGIC OF NEW ZEALAND

This is the first Dorothy Eden book I read and it is still my favourite. The heroine is not the sweet, sugary kind that is usually depicted in these sort of books. Rather she has lived a hard life and is looking for a way out. However, the man that she is eyeing has been hooked by someone else - enter the no-nonsence hero who is physically attracted to her body and admires her spirit but has qualms about her single-minded pursuit of her objectives. How they adjust to married life and life in the wilds of NZ - as it was then - is an exciting read. BTW the hero and heroine remind me a little of Scarlett O Hara and Rhett Butler!

Absorbing Story from New Zealand in the Late Victorian Era

Set in the late Victorian period, the story tells of Briar Johnson, who as a baby was found in a cold ditch by the side of the road clutched in the arms of what was presumably her dead mother. Briar was fortunate to be raised in the home of a schoolmaster who found her intelligent and taught her to speak well and read the classics. When he dies, she takes a position as a maid and sails away to New Zealand with two young ladies sent by their family to find proper husbands.

Beautiful Briar (named after the briar rose) determines she will one day have the finer things in life, the life she believes she was meant for. So, when the opportunity comes, she attends a ball that would be forbidden to her and dons a mask for a masked game that has the men picking prospective brides. Alas, she did not get the man she wanted. Instead, she got the hard Saul Whitmore, cousin to an earl and wealthy in his own right with a sheep ranch and the finest house in the area deep in the wild country.

Saul, at his mother’s urging, intends to take a wife, but most of the women he meets are insipid creatures who can only talk of gowns and parties. In Briar, he sees a woman who has a fire in her green eyes that intrigues him. So he determines to have her. With few options and urged on by all, Briar accepts his proposal of marriage even though she hates the hard man who mocks her at every turn.
The title, “Sleep in the Woods” was used twice in the book, once as a euphemism for death, the death that was all around the pioneers living in Taranaki in the shadow of Mt. Egmont on the North Island of New Zealand. When they were under siege by a renegade band of Maoris, the Reverend prayed: “Grant us to live, and not to sleep in these woods, unless that be Thy will. If we must die, let us do so bravely…” But then later, Briar remembers a passage from Ezekiel 34: “…they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods,” which gives a more favorable aspect to the title and comports with the excellent and very happy ending.
Suspenseful action is infused throughout this well-researched story. Wonderful characters populate every page. Beautiful descriptions of both flora and fauna are tucked in without you really being aware. And the hero and heroine are striking. Saul, a man whose strength enabled him to carve out a destiny in New Zealand’s wild country, was a worthy hero, though often harsh. Briar, grasping at the security Saul’s wealth provided, had a tender heart for all. She was the mistress of his house and the courage of the people as they faced hardship and death. I could not help but love her.

The only thing this story lacked—and might have been better for it—were love scenes. So much emotion was left in the dark. What Saul and Briar shared in bed might have told us their real feelings for each other when their words did not. An entire wedding night was summed up with one word, “Afterward.” There is even a bodice-ripping scene rather late in the book, but without the follow through it was a bit obscure. But one must make allowances for its year of publication—1960.

Still, it’s a great classic and a worthy read.

Wonderful story

I'm rather surprised to see several two star ratings for this excellent book on Goodreads. Were we reading the same thing? I absolutely loved this!

A servant girl accompanies two young ladies to New Zealand in their gentlewomanly pursuit of husbands. In a Cinderella -like twist, the servant girl Briar sneaks into a masked ball where they're doing the ancient wedding dance and lands herself a husband. Unfortunately for her, it was not the man she was aiming to snag, and unfortunately for him, she was wearing her mistress's gown and he also got the wrong girl.

But he needs a wife and she wants a home so they decide to go through with it and this is where the story really cranks it up a notch.

While Saul and Briar seethe with an intense hatred/ begrudging admiration for eachother, their biggest challenge isnt their loveless marriage but where they decide to set up home; for Saul lives in a remote region where the Maori are warring with the settlers and those they tomahawk and kill, they eat in their ceremonies...

I found this a gripping read and so real as to human nature and emotions. I could feel the agonizing frustrations of both Saul and Briar and while I wanted them to "sort things out" and be happy, the story was realistic. True understanding and appreciation take time and is all the sweeter when it arrives.

Lovers of Emma Drummond, M.M. Kaye and Catherine Gaskin would like this!

She creates drama,suspense,sensitivity,sexually charged moments and an awesome storyline with a wonderful HEA ROMANCE in every part of her writing style,which we as readers can share and enjoy. Jude - I love Jude more because he depicts my Highlander wetdream hero
Mason - I love Mason the most in this book simply because he's Bane's brother and what's more appealing is - HE'S A DOCTOR (just like my beautiful Doc Dru Holt....yum)
Kalen - I love all of TS' females , they are all strong but yet there is a certain vulnerability and gentleness in them that requires strong hands to keep them on their toes

I have been reading and re-reading TS' Sanibel/Captiva/Immortal series since book 1 and I still can't get enough of them. I love how the stories relate to one another, how the characters links with each other, how the families extended, the blending of Species between the Werewolves/Vampires/Habalines - I EXPERIENCE MAJOR PAGE TURN ON everytime reading the books in these series. Just don't ask me who my favorite hero is because I just can't decide, as the series go on, all my beautiful heroes seems to be coming back.

The sex scenes are SCORCHING HOT.

So Happy for this New Story

As usual, i just loved the story. Sanibel, Captiva, & Marco Islands are the places to be & i missed the many creatures on them. Mason, Jude & Archer have found their Mate, will she stay? Kalen is a bit freaked out, three mates?? She's been away from the Islands a long time & doesn't even know all these 'rules'!

There's so much more going on, Maestru & Alpha Jayce are working together to keep everyone safe.

i love the combinations Ms. Scott comes up with for the main menage. You never know who will be together. Add the problems, will the Werewolves & Vampires, & Habiline shifters work together? Can they? And then there's the sex, man the scenes she puts together. :-)

Yes, i Love these Series. Cannot wait until December.

About the Author

For more than twenty years, Ben Lieberman worked in institutional sales and trading for some of the most venerable banks in the world. I Could Not Put This Page-Turner Down

Not sure what book the prior two reviewers of The Carnage Account were reading but I could not put this page-turner down.

As a longstanding Wall Street veteran and a resident of a town that could be easily determined in reading this book, I found myself fully identifying with the character and plot development in this book. Those working on or close to Wall Street will quickly grasp and appreciate the author's ability to take an array of arcane principles and turn them into a riveting read.

Beyond the fabulous character and plot development, The Carnage Account is timely in delving into a number of topics that make this period truly historic.

While the intrigue of the story is top shelf, there are moments and verbiage in which I find myself laughing out loud but simultaneously thinking this is oh so real. As many who work within the industry know and state, "you can't make this stuff up" and Lieberman captures that dynamic within these pages.

If you want a book that brings the best of finance, mystery, relationships, some sports, and a little smut/sex thrown in for good measure, all packaged in an "easy to read and digest", then I think you will find this book a great read. It will make your jaw drop, your smile widen and a whole lot more.

Author Ben Lieberman's literary skills shine with the adventures of THE CARNAGE ACCOUNT

I became a fan of author Ben Lieberman after reading his book ODD JOBS, so it was great to know he had another book coming out for those who love action, suspense and a subtle bit of heart. That is exactly what he delivers with THE CARNAGE ACCOUNT.

Now I have to be honest and say I didn't know about THE CARNAGE ACCOUNT until this month, but I got a chance to read an early copy as I was going to be interviewing the author---and I am so glad that I did. Like ODD JOBS, Lieberman gives us characters that (if we're honest) are not too different from ourselves.

You have Rory Cage who is the perfect example of what greed and power can turn you into and cause you to do, regardless of the circumstances; and then there is Clay Harbor, a man you like from the very beginning because he chooses to stand for something, even when it's not easy or popular. The way Lieberman weaves in Harbor's background and what being in the heat of combat has done for him when it comes to showing compassion and feeling love is important for the reader, especially when you think about how Dawn Knight plays a role int he story.

What transpires between the 3 of these powerful characters is what makes THE CARNAGE ACCOUNT a must-read. The action is exciting, the dynamics between Cage, Knight and harbor are believable and interesting to watch and the end shows that the good guy can finish first---even if he doesn't think it's possible.

Lieberman is two-for-two in my book. THE CARNAGE ACCOUNT shows he has what it takes to be a storyteller with longevity.

Suspense, Thriller .... Fast Paced!

This was fun - Carnage is one of the BEST action thrillers I've ever read! I couldn't put it down - amazing this is only Liberman's second book. It had everything necessary for an incredible plot - intrigue, romance, action, conflict between good & evil - although its not always obvious which is which. Plot was gripping from the tense beginning and had many surprises throughout, characters were well developed and believable. Ben Liberman has the ability to capture the reader from the first line of this book where he involves the reader DIRECTLY in the action, as well as elicit a multitude of emotions from the reader, based on the reader's personal experiences and what the reader can imagine, evocatively elicited by Liberman from its readers. Ben Liberman puts it all together with well researched information on a multitude of topics ranging from the greed and dark side of Wall Street to clandestine foreign and domestic military operations.
