Gr 7 Up—High school senior Sarah has everything planned for college until an attractive young poetry teacher turns her head in this alternating perspectives novel. From the teacher's point of view, he has successfully rejected the teen, but for Sarah, things are not so clear. When he's at fault in an accident that nearly takes her life, secrets are slowly revealed. Despite a promising premise for a young adult novel, this title fails in its execution. The relationship doesn't come across as romantic; readers will feel uncomfortable with its predatory nature. More troubling is the unresolved ending. The characters, especially Sarah's parents, don't come across as believable, and teens will likely not relate to many of Sarah's choices and desires. The car accident aspect is reminiscent of Gayle Forman's If I Stay (Dutton, 2009). Hit is a lot more than it seems at first glance. It may sound like a story about forbidden love, but it only takes about three chapters --- when Sarah is hit by the car --- to make you realize it’s about so much more than that. Sarah has a fairly typical crush on her young and handsome poetry teacher, who in return is unsure about his own feelings toward the brilliant and pretty high school senior. It’s quickly stated that Sarah is indeed 18 and that Mr. Haddings is indeed a graduate student acting as a student teacher at the school. So while the idea of a student-teacher relationship may make you uncomfortable, just know that this is not the focus of the book. What makes this book unique and interesting is everything that happens following the car accident. It’s a realistic take on a situation such as this, and it certainly hits home for those that have been in this position before. We see the events unfold through both Sarah and Haddings’ eyes, getting the whole story when these characters only have part of the tale. Sarah’s thoughts as she’s being flown to the hospital, getting prepped for surgery, and coming-to post-operation are crushingly real, often funny, and often tragic. Her whole world has been turned upside down, and she doesn’t know where to look. But on the other side of the window you have Mr. Haddings. It would be easy to hate him, to blame him for the accident, but you feel for him at the same time. It truly was an accident, and he wants to do everything he can to rectify the situation. But can he? And we must always question his motivations --- is he doing this for himself, the sake of his career, or for Sarah? The characters in this book are hyper-realistic, and as such, they are not always likable. But considering Hit was, in fact, inspired by a true story, we would expect nothing less. (Hypable)

... forward to reading Hit and in most ways I loved it. Over all the book was a good

I was really looking forward to reading Hit and in most ways I loved it. Over all the book was a good, quick, and thought provoking read. It makes you really think about forgiveness and grace. Grover really expertly weaves poetry in throughout the book which really highlights those points. Also Grover really has an amazing talent of getting right down to the core of emotions like physical pain, personal image, grief, and gilt.The main thing that really disappointed me was the shortness of the book as a whole and also the shortness of the timeline that takes place. The book is only about twodays and while it make the book easy and quick to get through it also leaves little room to really truly connect with the characters. It lacked the length or at least an epilogue, maybe something that took place a year or so later to show how well Sarah recovers and if/when she goes to college. I personally would love to see a sequel continuing Sarah's road to bright yet difficult future and Hasting's journey to of excepting forgiveness. Alas I'll take one book with a gorgeous cover. Overall I would recommend Hit with an enthusiastic 4.5/5 stars.

Hit me up with some backstory!

Overall, the plot for Hit is an interesting one, and my main criticisms could be solved by lengthening the book. The book is fairly short, thus, there isn't a lot of real estate for character development or insight into character behavior. The reader is left with a lot of questions as to why many of the characters behave as they do, since they "arrive on the scene" that way, so to speak.
Since the fact that the female protagonist, Sarah, undergoes a car accident isn't a plot secret, I can say, that the people around her have unclear motivations for the way that they behave; something I think that more of a build up to the accident could help us understand.
Sarah's mom is a bit of a "helicopter mom." Is this because the empty nest is looming? Is it because (mild spoiler) communication with her husband seems to be breaking down in their marriage? She seems to badger her daughter a lot about college choice, about clothing, about many things. But we don't get a sense of the "why" behind it . . . and the accident only intensifies this attitude until she becomes somewhat cringeworthy as a character.
Her best friend seems to have some real issues with Mr. Haddings even before the accident. Why? She also picks a rather inappropriate time to get involved in her own relationship, with little thought to her supposed best friend in the hospital (this will make sense when you read the book).
I enjoyed the book, but the plot had issues that I think could have been resolved by adding some character depth and backstory.
There wasn't a definitive ending to the book, which was fine with me, because it leaves the door open to a sequel, which I hope will have more detail, length and character development. I'd love to know what happens with time and maturity to Jake and Sarah.

Great Reality Bite for teens!

After seeing the book jacket for this book, and seeing it was inspired by a real life story, I was literally salivating when my ARC book arrived in the mail! I jumped right in and finished the book in a few hours as this is a rather quick read. There are 52 chapters, based over the course of just 3 days from start to finish, packed into all of it's 215 pages. However, some of the chapters are just a few sentences long ~ don't let the length scare you away.
The author, Lorie Ann Grover, has a new fan with me as her writing style not only clinches this book together like a present with a bow on the top, but is creative enough to make you feel like you are there on each page. This book will definitely leave you breathless, shaking your head and cheering for setting things right after they go so terribly wrong.
Sarah, or Sares, as she is lovingly called by her family, has her future planned out after meeting her teacher Mr. Haddings. Suddenly, life turns on a dime and becomes more poetic. She's drawn to him and his ability to put words to paper and make them flow, something she dabbles with and keeps journals of her poetry. She feels a connection, and sets out to tell him so when she is hit by a car on a wet rainy morning ~ an accident, but one by sheer fate, lands two people with paths already crossing on shaky ground at school crossing yet again, this time with tragic consequences. Fate brings Sares to that crosswalk that stormy morning, and in the second Mr. Haddings looks away just for a second, his car meets here there. And not in a good way.
While this book plays on the emotions and tugs at the heartstrings, it's not that creepy teacher-student romance that so often we read about in the news. Is Sarah infatuated with her teacher? Yes. She writes him a poem to tell him so, which turns out to be a catalyst in the book. That poem, found at the scene after he tries to help Sarah while waiting on 911, drives Mr. Haddings to do the right thing.
Hit's message is very clear to me. Life turns on a dime, and sometimes the unexpected turns out to be the path less chosen. The life you plan, the journey you intend to take, and the road to becoming the person you are meant to be - teenagers and adults alike - can change in an instant. It's up to you regardless of those circumstances to come back stronger and bolder and ready to challenge the one person who can make a difference - yourself.
It behooves me to say that fans of Jenny Han and Sarah Dessen will enjoy this book immensely.
