Leslie Spell, traveler, entrepreneur, artist, educator, farmer, mother and wife. In 2006 Leslie was the first person in Alabama to apply for a dairy license in 15years. Like so many things she has done, Leslie jumped into dairy farming with both feet. After first learning the milking business she then tackled cheese making. One of the things she likes to hear is “I don’t like goat cheese but I like yours”. Leslie now sees the need for children to experience where their food comes from. She now offers well thought-out farms tours with the emphasis on education but with fun. Leslie Spell motto is “Still more to do”.

If you have never been to a goat farm, this book does a great job of depicting the various types of animal personalities you find on all of them. Sonny, the main character is a personable goat that shows the ropes to farm visitors and new baby animals alike. You will also meet the cute little trouble maker that steals your heart. There's one born every year on my farm, and Humble Heart (Leslie's farm) is no different. Leslie really does give an educational farm tour and this book describes it about as well as you could hope without actually being there. It would be a great companion piece for the elementary school children who visit. It would also be a terrific stand alone book for other young children who just love animals. If you agree with Leslie, that children need to understand the genesis of the food they eat, Field Trip! From the Dairy to the Table is a great place to begin.

Norman, Assistant Dean, Program for Educational Research and Development, and Professor, Department Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, McMaster University, Canada,John Cairney, Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University, Canada

David Steiner is a clinical psychologist by training, and currently a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, both at McMaster University. David is a Senior Scientific Editor of Health Reports, and sits on the editorial boards of four other journals. He has written or edited 9 books, in the areas of statistics, epidemiology, public health, and measurement theory; and have published over 350 articles in these and other areas. David's main interests are quality of life in people with various medical conditions, scale development, research design, treatment of the homeless mentally ill, and woodworking.

A must read for people who want to develop a new instrument/scale to assess health behavior

If you want to develop a new instrument/scale to assess health behavior get this book. I have been doing biostatistics for a living for more than a dozen years and this book in its various forms has remained one of my favorites because of it's clear writing and spot on advice. Over the years countless doctors have proposed using an instrument they have created to assess response to a new treatment. This book covers exactly why that is two projects not one. Development/validation of the instrument is its own project. This book covers the statistics and methods used to properly assess the reliability and validity of new (or existing) instrument/test/scale with fantastically clear writing. There are many examples taken from medicine and a fair number coming from education and psychology. All are clearly explained.

There are no proofs or derivations in this book. Instead you will find basic algebra and worked examples for most of the statistics. All the coverage is good but one of the truly excellent features of this book is the coverage of intra-class correlation. Nobody has done a better job explaining ICCs.

Some of my students find Norman and Streiner's Biostatistics the Bare essentials hilarious others find it too wordy. While there are rare funny comments this book has been edited to be much more concise and not silly. So, while it is not mathematically rigorous, it is a serious book. While this is a statistics and methods book at it's core, the writing is accessible for anyone with a background in medicine, education or psychology, as well as people coming from mathematics who like clean prose.

While this book could be better (if it had a web supplement with detailed coverage of SAS and/or R) it is otherwise fantastic.

Great Read!

Very engrossing read. Thrilling, exciting, intriguing, suspenseful, creative, original, and meaningful. I would've read it nearly non-stop except for those pesky kids insisting on things like food and sleep. ;) Mr. Lord's style and descriptions are masterfully done. I enjoyed the time I spent by the downward way, and am looking forward to the continuation of the saga!

I highly recommend this book for children and adults alike, and am shelving it in my library in the 'Classic Fantasy' section along with Tolkien and Lewis. Yeah, it's that good, and yeah, I label my shelves. :)

This book is like the best of Tolkien crossed with a great Dean Koontz thriller. Dan Lord's incredible imagination and ability to convey intricate thoughts with just the right words will transport you. He has an unusual talent.

Infinitely Surpassed My Expectations

Dan Lord's work in Pain and as a solo musician has created some of my favorite songs, so I figured I'd give his latest novel a read out of curiosity. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations, mainly because I had never read any of his other books and have only been familiar with his music, which is an entirely different medium. However, I found the book to be incredibly enjoyable. The plot is very interesting and although I'm not particularly a fan of the fantasy/adventure genre (I suppose this is what you'd classify the book as), I still appreciated how creative this unique world and creatures were. It's impressive how unified all the story-lines were and just how complex the main journey becomes for the protagonist. Most of the characters are well-crafted, especially the main character, Leo; although I did have some trouble distinguishing between the children and getting the hierarchy of evil deities down. The progression and development that Leo makes throughout the novel and how he attempts to face his obstacles despite harsh inner turmoil and a discouraging track-record throughout his family history is very well-done.
Dan Lord is truly a gifted writer. I was surprised by how varied his vocabulary was, how detailed his descriptions were, and how creative his ideas and story were. It's a remarkable book with a child-like spirit but is mature and profound enough that an adult can appreciate. Overall, it's an under-appreciated triumph and I highly recommend it.

Great Tips

This is one of the most creative beauty books I have ever seen because it is full of great beauty recipes along with information about women of all ages. A well written, fun and entertaining book about beauty and making your own products. I love this book! I highly recommend this book to all women and men interested in beauty and health.

Very interesting book, full of tricks and tips what to do at home to be beautiful, to have wonderful hair, to avoid cellulite. It gives you the opportunity to feel beautiful. And you could achieve this so cheap - no need of expensive creams or whatsoever. Just try it. You deserve to be beautiful :)

Short but helpful:)

This book is short but to the point. I totally agree with this author's recommendations on cellulite treatments as I have tried them myself: coffee (not in your mouth but on yous skin) peelings and essential oils like juniper can do wonders, but of course- first things first- move your body. I am also slim myself and had cellulite at some point. Other than that there are other simple recommendations as for hair care and skin/tooth care. MY hair is getting thinner and thinner and I will give natural remedies a try.

The H1N1 flu strain creates a pandemic much like the Spanish Flu of 1918. There is uncontrolled hemorrhaging that creates death as quickly as two days. The year is 2015 and by the summer of that year, services normally provided to the citizens are disappearing. The setting is in Waltham, MA, and a small group of survivors has banded together. They all decide to leave except for one, Walter Johnson. As luck(?) would have it, he rescues a young lady from rape. He is rewarded by being allowed to join the Bay State Alliance as her uncle, Pat, is the leader. While working there he meets Glenn Bradshaw and becomes friends with him.

The Bay State Alliance is trying to usurp as much territory around Waltham as humanely possible. Gang wars, killings of innocent civilians and graft are common in this area. Well, an interesting development occurs with Walter and this is when the story really gets going. "I am Nehemiah" is a code word that must be used to gain access to a vault. Let it suffice to say that this vault is paramount to the history of the New American Confederation (NAC). The Maine Republic also has a starring role!

The characters in this story have some interesting twists and turns. Kathryn Donahue goes through the maturation process and her older self is more likable. Not the same can be said about Glenn Bradshaw, however. Chung-Hee and his daughter are an integral part of the glue that holds Walt together.

Loved the ending when our troops "come marching home". An interesting mix of characters, a plot that is tightly woven and a superb read for me. Lots of intrigue and action on multiple fronts create a novel that is most interesting. Of course, the Boston references are excellent for me as I am from Vermont.

Most highly recommended. Will check out other novels by this author.

Walt said it himself near the end that it either brought the best or the worst out of everyone

This book is more then just a post apocalyptic tale, as it delves deeper into how we -humans- would deal in situations as the characters went through. So yeah, sure, the story started with a flu and millions of deaths, however that is not what ended their world as they knew it. What did, was their selfishness, their lack of preparation and knowledge of how to live without electricity and food and water, and how they resorted to violence. Walt said it himself near the end that it either brought the best or the worst out of everyone, and although it seemed that the bad outweighed the good he was glad there were still people who had the best brought out of them.

Each character was different, but at the same time I do have to agree it was hard to distinguish who was who at times. Smitty, as Walt described him, was a harsh guy who only tolerated people he thought were okay, and yet throughout the book he seemed just like Glenn, who was -near the beginning- Walt's best friend and a guy who seemed genuine and thankful before power got to him and messed with his head. Chung-Hee was a guy who listened well and gave advice from time to time and one who strongly believed in God, yet even so I didn't feel much emotion from him; more so then Smitty and Glenn, yeah, but not enough to make me able to connect with him. Walt himself was alright, I actually really like his character, as he pretty much blocked himself from all the bad in the world and lived in his own little bubble until he came across Joseph Paladin. From then on you see more from him, and it got better.

It was well written, though, and the flow was fantastic. I liked the action that was introduced at times too. My favourite part though, I have to say would be whilst Walt and Kathryn are out in the woods trying to get to Maine. They are hungry and dirty and afraid and haven't been clean for days and Walt begins to think what many of us have probably thought from time to time: how is it that in movies the characters in situations like his own find the time to fall in love? Walt himself thinks about the stench and the urgency of the mission and the fear of being caught, and can't seem to find where love falls into place. He says that the stench is so awful that he can't be bothered to think about making love with Kathryn; he barely finds her physically appealing with all the filth and grime and stench on her. I just like that part because it shows neither of them are perfect or unrealistic during their journey, and it feels like you can reach out and they'll be there, because you've connected.

So really, I enjoyed this book. I did. The fast pace and many situations in the book definitely pulled me in and kept me interested until the end, and it wasn't overly predictable or unrealistic and I was definitively intrigued while I read. I just would rather the characters be a little more distinct from the other.

A THRILLER IN A POST-PANDEMIC-APOCALYPIC WORLD

Paladin, former major in the United States Army, retired colonel in the Maine Republic Militia, and one of the founders of the New American Confederation. Paladin reveals in opening his memoir that his true identity is Walter Johnson.

Walter Johnson is one of the very few to survive a global flu pandemic that takes the lives of millions around the world. What remains is a world we have all imagined, and dreaded, a desperate and primitive new world where survival has become the only imperative and vicious predators create a climate of fear. It is a dark, dangerous, and seemingly hopeless new world.

Walt is the unlikeliest of heroes, a quiet, low profile, reticent man, but as he faces this terrible new world, he is drawn by destiny and circumstances to a life of extraordinary heroism.

The story opens quietly, just the way Walt likes things, but his world soon erupts in lies and deceptions and violence, and Walt is forced to emerge from his shell and join the struggle against evil.

As Walt tells is story, a woman from his past named Veronica becomes an intriguing character. All we know about her is that Walt's mistrust of women seems to stem from her. He tells us early on, “The truth was, I couldn’t find a woman I could trust.” Then he adds later, “Trying to start a relationship with any woman I met during that time would’ve been Veronica all over again, but worse.”

This was my first clue that Walt, ironically, resembles Walter Mitty, James Thurber's uncommonly ordinary, usually ineffectual, and hapless dreamer of personal triumphs. However, this Walt does not dream of personal triumphs, he avoids them, along with women. He is content to be withdrawn, keep his head down, and hide. It is this aspect of Walt that kept me turning the pages to see how in the world he becomes the honored, revered, and famous savior of the Confederation—Major Joseph E. Paladin.

The author has done a wonderful job creating a suspenseful tale of a post-pandemic-apocalyptic world. His characters are well drawn and authentic and define the desperate world in which they live. I highly recommend this book.

Not sure

Not sure if I even got this book. I got so many Common Core texts, that I had to go back and look for this one. The cover is not the same, I am supposing. The 7th grade CC Math that I believe I got was oddly arranged, and I have to skip all over the book to match lessons to where we are in the textbooks.

Vintage WEB Griffin!

In this volume of the Corps saga , we see several of the characters introduced in "Counterattack" elevated to new prominence. Newly promoted Captain Charley Galloway becomes the commanding officer of VMF 229 , and along with Bily Dunn sets about preparing the young squadron to be thrown into the cauldron of Guadalcanal. Flem Pickering continues to grow in importance to the ongoing tale of incredible heroisim exhibited by the young Marines thrown into bloody conflict.
"Battleground" details some of the terrible privations experienced by the First Marine division on the 'Canal and the coastwatchers on Buka island. Steve Koffler and Joe Howard on Buka illustrate the importance of the little known coastwatcher organisation to the success of the Marine aviation assets in the Solomons. Koffler continues to grow in importance to the task of Captain/General Pickering in the Southwest Pacific Ocean Area (SWPOA). Even though Koffler and Howard are ill with parasites and other tropical diseases they continue to function "as Marines".Koffler continues to emerge as one of the more "colorful" characters in the story--look for him in future episodes!
Of the many volumes in "The Corps" saga , "Battleground" stands out as one of the more lively and entertaining volumes. A great read--I could hardly put it down. Have now read it 4 times!

Another great book

If you love this series....buy this book !! You have to love the way these characters come alive and the events that were once so one dimensional with black and white newsreels...become living events. A must read for any military history buff.

Kindle pricing way too high...

I'm going to have to stop buying this series...I just can't justify this pricing model. The books have been out for 20 years or so, and are available for pennies on the dollar EVERYWHERE...it just makes no sense to have these priced at $7.99.
These books should be $2.99 or less for the Kindle version...there is no printing or distribution cost to associate with it, and the publisher provides one digital copy for re-distribution.
I'm done with greedy publisher & greedy authors...I have WAY too many other ways to spend my disposible income...time they all understand that and price accordingly.
