My pink, misty self hovers there for a moment as the lonely sound of Rock’s crashing through the woods fades farther into the night.
“Pink?” Galaxy’s starry skin disappears, replaced with the t-shirt and blue jeans of Gabe Garrison. “You alright?”
“Yeah,” I say from what feels like a million miles away. “ I just feel … off.” I point at Ember. “You’d better check on her.”
Gabe rushes to her side. “Why? What’s going on?”
I race to the winery’s front porch and back. “The Magick … I was expecting a shove, or maybe a yank out of Ember’s body. But it was more like … like being cut out, piece by piece. With a flaming chainsaw … of fire.” I take a deep breath (or at least I would if I needed to breathe). “I just—gimmie a sec.”
Gabe nods and kneels beside Ember. She’s cut in a hundred places, blood smeared across her body and the blue spring dress that I put on her this morning. Like her, it’s in tatters.
“M says her blood pressure is all over the place.” Gabe looks up at us. “What happened?”
I float closer to him. “It must be like when I’m forced out of somebody, with an energy blast or whatever. It’s hard on me. Harder on the other person.”
“We need to get her to a hospital then,” Gabe says. “Just in case.”
Casa presses two fingers against Ember’s neck. “She doesn’t need to go to a hospital. She needs to go to Obi. At the very least, he’ll have Magickal items on par with medical science. At the very most, he’ll have Magickal items ready to deal with anything else.”
Gabe stands. “Whoa, wait—you don’t think Ember’s through the worst of it?”
Casa straightens as well, but keeps his eyes on Ember. “I think that when it comes to Magick, you can only expect one thing—the unexpected.”
The see-saw of katydid legs creaks into the silence.
“Okay,” Gabe uses his take-charge voice. “Here is what we’ll do: Casa, you get Ember down to Old Prose, while Pink and I deal with Rock. I think our best chance is—”
“No.” The word leaves my pretty little mouth before I can catch it.
Gabe and Casa look at me.
“I’ve seen how bad this can get. Ember needs help fast. Which means she has to get to Old Prose—fast. Gabe has to take her.”
Gabe’s voice sounds a little less take-charge-y. “But …”
“Your powers can move her better and faster than Casa’s old man arms. Especially when you’re in Old Prose, weaving your way between giant lizards and tree-nymphs, or whatever.”
Gabe shakes his head. “Rock could hurt somebody.”
I float really close to Gabe. He doesn’t flinch away from my ghost-like self in the slightest. He never does. It’s one of the many reasons why he wins the greatest guy ever award. “Cause Ember’s, like, totally safe now, right?”
He sighs, then turns his head slightly sideways.
“What’s M think?”
“He thinks—in his own asshole kind of way—that you’ve got a point. He thinks we’ve got just enough power to get both me and Ember there, which is really shitty considering … considering a bunch of stuff you don’t want to hear.” In a flash of light, Gabe once again changes into Galaxy and holds out an open palm. A blue beam leaps from it, wrapping Ember in a sphere of light.
He floats off the ground, taking Ember with him. It’s weird how much he’s changed over the past few months. He’s gone from worrying about if he looks awesome to actually looking awesome. Having to do this is so totally unfair …
As if on cue, he turns his glowing eyes my way and says, “You’ll wait on me, right? I think it’s a bad idea, you going after Rock alone.”
Like hell. “Totally.”
My name is Pink, and this time--we're telling a volume of my story ...
