Ignition Point: A Progenitor Anthology (The Progenitor Saga), by Kate Corcino

Two hundred years after the cataclysm that annihilated fossil fuels, Sparks keep electricity flowing through their control of energy-giving Dust. The Council of Nine rebuilt civilization on the backs of Sparks, offering citizens a comfortable life in a relo-city in exchange for power, particularly over the children able to fuel the future. The strongest of the boys are taken as Wards and raised to become elite agents, the Council’s enforcers and spies. Strong girls—those who could advance the rapidly evolving matrilineal power—don’t exist. Not according to the Council.
* “Ward” introduces Thomas, a thirteen-year-old boy rescued from Scavengers, marauding slavers who murdered both his biological and foster parents and sold the highly powered boy to the highest bidder—the Council of Nine. Dumped at the Ward School to train his abilities, Thomas must learn to survive among a new breed of savages…the boys who have been training there since they were five and the men who must hone them into weapons.
* “Blood and Water” is the story of Lucas, a young man who has spent his childhood shunned by his powerful, religious family for the crime of being born a Spark. On the cusp of attaining his place in the world his grandfather intends to re-shape, Lucas will discover the heavy price of belonging. Will he pay it, or will he count the costs and deem them too high?
* “Ghost Story” shows how lives lived on the edge—of society, of safety, of sanity—intersect. Lena, a highly powered runaway, fled a life of hiding from the Council. Elias is one of the so-called New Barbarians, those who choose to live free, if hard and dangerous, lives. Wounded and dying, he hunts the Scavengers who killed his family and took his brother to sell. A chance meeting in the desert of what was once New Mexico will change them both forever.
A collection of three related short stories, Ignition Point offers a glimpse into the lives of characters from the upcoming novel, Spark Rising.

Good thing the novel is coming out so soon
By Amazon Customer
Set in a complex world with unexplored depth, this collection of short stories offers a unique twist I can only call post-apocalyptic fantasy. Each story is a rapid read and each had surprise turns to the plot that caught me unsuspecting (though not on the GoT/GRRM level). The author’s strongest suite is character development, which she accomplishes so well that I was quickly absorbed in these short stories. As each story ended I found myself wanting to read more of each protagonist's adventures. Good thing the novel is coming out so soon.

I enjoyed it. I recommend the collection of short stories to anyone looking for something enjoyable yet a little different from the masses. At 99 cents this is a great deal.

An intriguing peek into a new world and series
By JKC
This anthology is an introduction to an upcoming series by promising new author Kate Corcino. Each story takes place before the series time line and provides the background to the political workings of a post apocalyptic world that is dependent upon Sparks to provide electricity.

The first story, Ward, begins 33 years before the series starter. We meet a group of boys who are in school to learn how to be agents for the government, but whose eyes are opened to the ugly reality that all they believe in is not what it seems. This appears to be the beginning of a secret rebellion from within led by young male protagonists who recognize they are stronger together.

The second story, Blood and Water, takes place 23 years after the first and introduces perhaps the antagonists of the series. These are fanatics who believe Sparks are an aberration that are lesser humans to be controlled and trained like dogs. They have a vision of a future that is within their grasp and will go to any lengths to achieve it, even sacrifice their own.

The third, Ghost Story (my favorite), occurs 5 years before the series starter. We are shown the power of an untrained female Spark who is stronger than any of the males introduced so far. She is used to being alone and is willing to do whatever it takes to survive. She is also willing to risk herself to do what's right for those in need.

Ignition Point creates a well-thought out world full of characters who struggle with who they are, who they want to be, and who they are meant to be. We as readers get a taste of what is to come but are also left wondering how the pieces will come together. Luckily we get to find out next month.

I highly recommend this anthology to anyone interested in the scifi/urban fantasy/dystopian genres. It is an intriguing peek into a new world and series that promises to be original.

Promising new author with a great post apocalyptic twist!
By Penny B.
The events in this book take place after an apocalyptic event that leaves the earth without a way to use energy of any sort--electricity, fire, and nuclear energy from what I can tell. The only way for mankind to get energy is to rely on Sparks, people with the ability to manipulate (possibly semi-sentient?) Dust. These stories take place in the United States (Pacific Northwest, Texas, etc.) where people are divided into groups based on their beliefs and the way they want to live--relocation cities, neo-barbarians, and scavengers. Everyone is tested for Spark abilities at age 5. Boys are put into training as government agents, and girls are removed from society, possibly for breeding programs (I'm guessing here.)

This is an EXCELLENT introduction into a fascinating series. The premise is so original and fresh. I can't wait to see what the books bring as far as back story and new tidbits to be gleaned. I can't wait to see what the author has in store for us! Is it November yet?
