“May the Black Rose protect you in life and avenge you in death.” – Vow of the Black Rose Six hundred years ago, the Muir Court was wiped from existence, destroyed by an elite group known as the Black Rose Guard. Their Captain, Mara, has a reputation of being a harsh woman who leads the guard with a fierce formality. During her long years, she has known pain, loss, heartache…and one great love. Edward was the Captain of the Royal Guard. He loved her once. However, it was a love that faded the day he met young Liza, the Princess who stole the heart he had once sworn belonged to Mara alone. Liza was also the woman Mara was fated to protect. When the Queen learns of her daughter’s forbidden love for Edward, she devises a series of punishments, torturing Edward while her daughter is forced to watch. In a an act of desperation, Mara takes Liza’s place and looks on helplessly as Edward endures the torments which break his body and Mara’s soul. All of their pain is put aside when Liza is murdered by the rulers of a rival court. Haunted by her failure to protect the Princess and adhering to tradition, Mara takes the vow of the ‘Black Rose.’ It is an ancient oath which compels those under its power to abandon the lives they knew for the sake of a single goal: vengeance. Her quest leads her on a dark path of violence, rage and bloodshed. Tormented by a fate they can neither accept nor escape, Black Rose is a tale of retribution, love, and above all, honor—at any cost.

Deep love and dark desires
By Greg Wilkey
“Black Rose” is more than fantasy, more than romance. It’s a story of strength and determination, actions and consequences, deep love and dark desires. Once you enter K.L. Bone’s world, you will not want to leave. In fact, you will be left wanting more.
K.L.Bone introduces us to her world through the eyes of Mara and Edward. Their lives are forever intertwined through a history of blood and lost love. The viciousness and savagery of the battlefields did little to prepare Mara and Edward for the consequences of political war. Truly, brute strength and fierce battles rarely wound with the same ferocity as hatred and bitterness.
Mara and Edward find themselves victims of an ancient code, a sacred vow: May the Black Rose protect you in life and avenge you in death. These words hold power and sway over the lives of these star-crossed lovers. Even the cruelty of an angry queen and the ambitions of a rival Royal Court can do little to undo what fate has decided. It is against this backdrop that we suffer and celebrate with Mara and Edward. We are soon swept up in intrigue and secrets.
As with all great romances, there is a third party, an unwelcomed element. K.L. Bone does not ignore this tension in her story. She uses the ill-fated princess, Liza; an innocent victim herself in this drama being orchestrated by those above her. Edward’s heart which was once the property or Mara, is suddenly torn and divided between these two women. Can he love them both and still be honorable? Is it even possible to have a heart for two women that are so much alike, yet so incredibly different?
K.L. Bone does a masterful job in creating a world filled with rich imagery and intense dialogue. I read “Black Rose” quickly. I devoured the story. I fell in love with the characters.
I am now reading the sequel, “Heart of the Rose,” and I can honestly say that I am already held captive by the story.
I highly recommend the books of K.L. Bone. You will not be disappointed.

KL Bone's "Black Rose:" a tale driven By intense, raw emotions
By Justin B.
I couldn't stop thinking about the book while in the midst of reading it. KL Bone has a firm control over her language, lacing her words with powerful, explosive emotions that will leave you with some pretty visceral emotional experiences on every page. There is deep psychological examination about love, and the virtues of honor, fidelity, and refraining from vengeance.
Sometimes, the story, though, felt a bit underdeveloped, in that the world that the story inhabits is meant to be coexistent with a more modernized world, yet we are never given a very strong sense, as how this world logically cohabitates the same space of a more developed technologic world (which is our own 21st century novel in the story).
Other times, certain threads of plot feel a bit messy, concerning the chronological organization of these events, even though the actual events of the story are very cleanly written. And, that is the one potent strength of KL Bone's writing, which is a keen focus on the raw emotions of her characters. That is something sometimes toned down, or cleaned up, in even more first-party publishing projects. That is one of the strengths of self-published writing- this rich, uncensored form of storytelling that is pure and drives directly to the heart of how traumatic events in our world greatly rupture and effect our handling of things in the real world.
I had to put down the book sometimes, not due to any instances of bad writing or dull plotting. Actually, it was due to the strong, well-articulated emotions of the characters, which is something so hard to come by in writing. In that sense, "Black Rose," was a very welcome surprise, and I enjoyed this book enough to begin exploring other titles from this writer. I think she definitely has a creative storytelling mind, and again, a great handle (in an almost eerie Iago fashion) of what things alter the emotions of a particular type of person, psychologically-speaking. That is a very hard thing for many writers to do, cause the reader to feel the depth of another character's emotions deeply.
I would definitely recommend reading it, in hopes future installments clean up the few instances of some messy plotting, which will only help this very promising novelist improve greatly on skills that she most definitely has in abundance.

Swept Away - A Must Read
By Sebastian James
"Black Rose" by K.L. Bone, is one of those novels that I simply could not put down. I was immediately swept away into the story of Mara and Edward. A love story that could not be. Written in a beautiful, poetic prose -- This was a page turner for me.
The story takes place six hundred years ago, after the Muir Court has been depleted by the Black Rose Guard which is led by Captain Mara. She is haunted by great pain and the loss of her one great love -- Royal Guard, Captain Edward. They had once been in love but Edward has taken a new love, Princess Liza. The Queen learns of her daughters forbidden love of Edward and creates a series of punishments and torture of Edward which her daughter must witness.Having been Liza's original protector, Mara takes Liza's place and it breaks her heart to see Edward tortured in such a fashion. Liza is murdered by the rulers of another court. Having failed to protect Liza, Mara takes the vow of the "Black Rose". This is an oath of Vengeance, leaving a trail violence and death.
From the very beginning, I was absolutely consumed by this novel and you will be too. I could not stop thinking of these characters as they came to life. Comes only once in a while, that a novel really "stays" with me and this novel did that for me. I can't wait for the next installment of what I hope will be a lasting series.
