a must-read for plantar fasciitis sufferers !

If you have plantar fasciitis, you need to read this book ! It includes easy medical explanations about the underlying cause of PF as well as multiple effective strategies on how to get rid of it. I especially like the way it explains how PF is related to trigger points and how these need to be deactivated first mechanically before stretching. In order to do so, the pictures showing the trigger points on the calf and the foot are very helpful. Also the instructions are usually very easy to follow, but you might want to watch the videos on the website www.pfsurvivalguide.com as well.
I developed some shoulder pain a couple of years ago but i thought i just had sore muscles. But it turned out they were trigger points; so i purchased the Fenix Rehab System. It's a blue wooden board with different holes on it and it comes with rubber digits you put on these holes. And by pressing on the part of your body with trigger points, you can deactivate them.
I had long forgotten about this tool i kept in a drawer until i read William Prowse's book ! After 2 weeks of daily session on my calf and feet, the pain has dramatically decreased. You need to drink a lot just after to flush the toxins. I also like the spoon, the cutting board and the foot roller which bring me the most relief
My PF is still there (i had it for 15 months) but i feel i am heading in the right direction now and the end (of the tunnel) is near.
After trying physical therapy (useless), acupuncture (pointless), ESWT (limited results; i found out by reading this book i had the wrong type ! the difference between radial and shockwave therapy should be mentioned in the book instead of the website), frozen can of beans (helpful but not conclusive), cold and hot bath (helps blood circulation but doesn't heal PF), this book is by far the best tool i have found. I strongly recommend it !

Good advice from someone who has been through it all himself and come out the other side

If you have been suffering with chronic plantar fasciitis and have tried many of the recommended treatments (e.g physio, stretching, icing, orthotics, popping pills etc) without relief and you are looking for some advice from someone who has been through the same pain and come out the other side then definitely get this book.

There is so much information online about plantar fasciitis, but it seems most of the advice is from people who have not had a truly severe case and stretching calf and foot muscles, doing a bit of icing and finding some decent orthotics has managed to give them lasting relief. This was not the case for me. Eight months ago when this horrible injury began, I visited a physio and got some deep tissue massage, tried taping and did lots of stretching as recommended. I spent money on endless orthotics out of desperation - eventually I visited a podiatrist who made a pair that contained a groove where the plantar fascia was and they gave me the most relief. They were expensive but I'd already tried endless shop bought ones as well as having them moulded to my feet at a specialist sports shop (they were the worst of the lot as they were rock solid and dug painfully in to my arch). I also got a cortisone shot but this did nothing for me. I saw an orthapedic foot specialist who referred me to have MRI's of foot, spine and even head(!) as he wanted to check their was nothing going on higher up in the body such as nerve entrapment - at that point I had severe pain in my calf as well and had lost a lot of muscle. My GP prescribed various painkillers but again, no relief. When I tried stretching it just aggravated it more. Eventually I had to leave my teaching job as couldn't keep up the physical demands and was on crutches.

I was drawn to read this book as the author had been through 3 years of a severe case and had tried all the things I had already tried without relief and then managed to self treat his own case (with hard work and perseverance and a bit of help from a few treatments such as ESWT). It was interesting reading his view that stretching without dealing with the 'trigger points' first will only worsen the injury. I have been working on the soft tissue release he suggests and although I'm still a long way off, it has helped to release some of the pain. I'm still using crutches when out and about but can weight bear much more easily than before - I used to have severe pain with every step and now the pain is much milder. I have been rolling my foot on a spikey ball which definitely helps (you can buy them cheaply on the internet - fitness mad do a 7cm one which is great). I haven't personally tried the scraping yet - seems quite harsh (!), but the soft tissue massage is helping to break down the scar tissue. I'm exploring the possibility of getting ESWT and am hoping to get it on the NHS (I'm in England) but we are way behind on this - my local hospital is the only one that provides this treatment on the NHS and the machine has just broken!! I am glad that the author talks about the difference between radial and shock wave therapy as a lot of clinics say that they offer ESWT when really it is radial therapy so I will make sure I ask them about this.

The chapter on diet is also interesting. A healthy diet with lots of foods that contain high levels of vitamins, protein and good fats is clearly important for the body to have the best chance of healing. I am more skeptical about nutritional supplements however. While I have been taking omega 3 fish oil supplements as they have strong medical evidence behind them and many solid medical trials have prooved their effectiveness, many supplements do not have solid medical evidence to back up their claims - systematic enzymes included. Many websites marketing these will give you a 'scientific' explanation behind them but tests suggest they cannot be absorbed enough by the blood for them to actually make a difference (there is a website called 'Science based pharmacy' which talks about this in detail -

While many people have tried them and claim that they have helped them recover, I will remain skeptical until I find a solid and reliable medical trial (and not just ones that are done by the companies that are marketing them!)

I am hoping that in time I will be able to move on to stretching again without aggravating the injury, but for now I am continuing to apply the massage techniques until I feel ready. Over all, I would definitely recommend this book. If anything, it has helped me to view the situation more positively and to know that their is light at the end of the tunnel as the author went through a very severe case and managed to treat himself after many other treatments failed.

See a doctor first

I am changing my review after seeing the doctor. I had seen other doctors in the six years I have had the problem, but unfortunately, I still have the problem. I was so fed up with doctors, I decided to treat myself and turned to books and the internet. But, I still was not getting better.

Recently, I found a good foot doctor. After Xrays and MRIs, it turns out I have a more advanced form of plantar fascitis called plantar fasciotis. Since I have had it for six years, the damage is more severe and my doctor said there are tears in the plantar fascia and it is not a good idea to roll anything over the plantar fascia or scrape. I had also bruised myself by trying to do myofascial release. He said my body is not ready for that yet.

I need to start with the boot at night and taping for now.

There is a lot of good information here and I am sure people can be helped by this information, but I advise everyone to see a doctor first before you try and treat yourself.
