Surprisingly good Kindle book with excellent illustrations

This really is an excellent and complete guide to Rembrandt's art and even has two fine biographies. The hundreds of paintings and etchings are about as complete a collection as you will find anywhere and appears to have every single known work of art by Rembrandt. It's beautifully formatted and organized. The book is divided into four sections:
- The Highlights, which covers his most well-know works. Each painting is preceded by a brief introduction giving the history and a brief description. All the paintings in this section include a blown-up section of detail that can be even magnified further on the screen.
- The Paintings, orders the paintings into two divisions: chronological and alphabetical. It's fascinating to examine each one from "The Operation" painted when he was 18 years old to his final self-portrait painted when he was 63 and see the subtle changes in his techniques.
- The Etchings, covers them all both chronologically and alphabetically from his first etching when he was 20 years old to his last when he was 59.
- The Biographies contains two biographies by Mortimer Mempes and Malcolm Bell.
The reproductions vary in quality from excellent to acceptable. There are many here that have lost fine detail when I magnified portions of them to see the brushstrokes. On the other hand, most of them magnify very well and frequently the detail is startling.

A inexpensive guide to Rembrandt Paintings and Etchings. Well worth concidering.

i was initially sceptical about this Kindle catalogue.
It is unclear to me where the illustrations came from. There is no obvious Permissions page.
I checked some 50-100 paintings.
They appear to follow the recent view on Rembrant paintings [just Rembrandt's work and no works by pupils ]
The modern location of the Paintings are given
One irritating factor is the tendency for the caption to the painting to be on one page and the painting to be on another page.
The colour of the paintings is reasonable good - it may be even better-I like my IPad set to a high level of brightness ]
How many Rembrandt paintings are there ?
Bredius in this 1935 catalogue thought about 630 First edition of Bredius.
In the third edition of Bredius, revised by H Gerson some 570 plus.
In the 2014 Rembrandt Research Project the number is much lower at around 334. Mower day scholars are better at picking the styles of Rembrandt's pupils, and many other technical and scientific have helped craft what is and what is not a Rembrandt.
This Kindle rebook appears to follow the modern view of Rembrandt. I have not counted the paintings but I think they are around 330 in all.
The etchings
As yet I am to check out the Etching section against one of my standard catalogues.
There are no Bratsch numbers given.. There is no indication of which state of the etching is shown, if there are more than one state.
Overall I was impressed by the Paintings and etchings.
M Menpes biography of 1905 is best avoided.
There is a list of Rembrandt paintings by location at the back. This gives so helpful provenance data but appears to contain many more Rembrandt paintings than is now accepted.

Much has been happening in the attribution of Paintings to Rembrandt so it is hard to recommend catalogues of all of Rembrandt's paintings.
Hopefully some new works will appear that will offer the general reader a good set of Rembrandt Paintings illustrated in full colour and a useful reader friendly text.
Summary.
This book has its's limitations but at under $ 3 it is a bargain.
I would feel more happy in recommending it if I knew where the.photos of the Paintings and etchings came from.

Another winner in the painter series

The ability to enlarge the photos of the paintings is the best aspect of this book. Of course, seeing the paintings and detail photos, along with the brief descriptions is the prime reason to get this book. However, I view the ability to enlarge an extra, very helpful bonus. It is amazing to see how he was descriptive with an economy of brushwork. I do wish the illustrations were better, but I'm not sure they could be. Some of the paintings look dirty and the higher key hues appear to have faded or are covered by grime. You have to see a cleaned Rembrandt to fully appreciate how he used color and brushwork for expression. Man, could he paint eyes.
