Neill's debut novel is a sci-fi tale, spanning four shortvolumes, about a future society that outlaws religion and all thingssupernatural after a near apocalypse.
According to the official history of the Twin Cities, Fortinbrasand Lysander, a nuclear holocaust left all but a few hundred people on theplanet dead in an event known as the "Cataclysm." Those remaining few rebuiltsociety, shunning the things that they believed caused the division and strifethat led mankind to destroy itself. In this environment, two girls meet andbecome lifelong friends: Sabrina Sabryia, niece of Head Minister D'Agosta; and artistLindsey Mehdina, who has episodes in which she can see the future. Sabrinabecomes a cadet in the society's militaristic police force, responsible forstomping out all symbols and practice of religion and superstition and makingsure everyone follows the strict rule of law. She often deals with Lindsey,who's much more of a free spirit, painting public murals in colors notsanctioned by the Head Ministry. Their friendship is jeopardized when Sabrinafinds out that Lindsey is involved with the very occultists that she's beentrying to bring down. This leads them both to journey outside the Twin Cities,where they find another world they didn't know existed. It causes them toexamine their faith, friendship, and everything they think they know about theirsociety.
Neill has created an immersive world--one that readers can see, hear,and smell ("Thedesert yawned open around them, red light from the setting sun streaking acrossthe hardpan").The characters even have their ownprofanity, somewhat in the style of the Battlestar Galactica reboot;meanwhile, a refrigerator is a "cold box," while car like vehicles are "rollpods." The jargon seems like overkill in spots, but it's effective at remindingreaders that they are indeed in another world, familiar but still alien. Thetechnology is also inventive, and the large birdlike machines that the ministryuses to hunt down the occultists are terrifyingly effective. Overall, the sagais well-plotted, its characters well-drawn, with a thoughtful philosophy framingthe events. The four volumes taken together read like a miniepic.
A notable, impressive debut for sci-fi fans.

Author Ted Neill's follow-up doesn't disappoint!

In this exciting second installment, Sabrina's very own reasoning is challenged as she attempts to uncover the mysteries surrounding Fortinbras. Logic and sentiment go head to head as the bonds of friendship and family are tested. Sabrina and Lindsey must decide where their loyalties lie. Which raises the question--how far will each go for her friend?
Once again Ted Neill keeps me turning the page, immersed in his remarkably descriptive prose. Neill is a master storyteller. This tale has it all; love, betrayal, deception and then some. Add to this astounding plot developments and you have one kickass book! City on a Hill: Vol 2: Light of the World is a well-crafted novel that will have you craving volume 3.

Enjoyable read - All 4 books in the series

I enjoyed the series. I met the author in Seattle. He goes to my daughter's church and wrote these while holding down a full-time job. If he writes more, I will read them!
