From School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—Claire is forced by her parents to leave her small town in Ohio for New York City after her sister Ella is brutally attacked one night in a cornfield. The facts surrounding this attack are muddled and Claire feels intense guilt for leaving Ella alone that night and is convinced, in spite of her sister's clean wounds, that it was the teeth of wolves and not a knife that destroyed her face. For two years, in a world of cell phones and email, Claire has not spoken to her sister, whom she was closer to than anyone. Suddenly, Claire gets the news that Ella has now gone missing, so she rushes back to Ohio to find her. With the help of her love interest, Grant Buchanan, she begins to piece together her past memories, town legends, and half-truths long hidden in search of not only her sister, but also the true source of the vicious attack. Claire finds a map in Ella's things, with a red circle drawn repeatedly around a town, but sets this aside and keeps searching for a clue that will help her find her sister. Eventually an orange mitten is found hundreds of miles away in a train station that is identified as Ella's. The faster paced second half tries to tie together several plot elements, especially bringing into question the narrator's reliability, but doesn't quite succeed. Readers who stick it out until the end will likely be left unsatisfied and scratching their heads.—Heather Acerro, Rochester Public Library, MN

Favorite read
By Lazy Book Lovers
Being close to my sister, sister books are amongst my favorites to read, so going into this story I had high expectations. It has set on my most anticipated list for months now, so while I was tempted to open the egalley the moment I received it, I resisted for fear that those expectations wouldn't be met. However, Of Scars and Stardust proved to be one of my favorite reads so far this year.

There are times when I say, "I couldn't put this down.", and what I really mean is, "It took a couple days, but I devoured every word and loved it." Well, with Of Scars and Stardust I'm saying, "I couldn't put this down" and mean it. The overwhelming need to find out whodunit was present throughout the entire length of this book.

Reading the synopsis, I anticipated a mystery, but not so much a psychological thriller. Throughout most of the book I wondered what was going on. Were the "wolves" real, or even wolves at all? From the beginning, before Claire finds her sister bleeding out in a cornfield, the author drops hints as to what's going on, but somehow I never caught on. It wasn't until the end of the book that I had an my ah-ha moment of realization.

Which is just one of the reasons I loved Of Scars and Stardust.

Written in colorful prose and metaphors, I was in it from the first scene. While the characters aren't realistic, per say, I grew attached rather quickly and liked them all, especially whimsical Ella. When I was her age I wanted to do everything with my big sister, too.

The ending couldn't have surprised me more. There was a love story laced within the pages of this dark tale and I was rooting for Claire and Grant. I'm still rooting for Claire and Grant. There are so many questions I wanted answered that were left unresolved, but I suspect this was intentional. The final three sentences left me bewildered and wanting more. However, it was the perfect twisted ended, for this twisted tale.

There aren't enough words for me to adequately review this book, which often happens when I'm trying to do a good book justice. If you love a good mystery or have a soft spot for sisters like I do, I highly recommend Of Scars and Stardust. It will leave you gasping, amused, in love, and heartbroken, all at once.

Crazy and Unpredictable
By Holly
While I wasn't sure of my feelings in the beginning, that quickly changed once the pace picked up and all of the mysteries are unraveled.

I really liked the main character's voice, Claire Graham. At first, I wasn't really connecting with her. She felt very distant and her character was kind of guarded. There were moments I wasn't happy with her choices and didn't sympathize with her as much. But I think she had great growth as a character. And I also think she was supposed to be a kind of unreliable narrator, especially once the story starts to unravel and Claire becomes caught up in her sister's disappearance and her quest for the truth.

And she pulls Grant into that quest with her. There is something about Claire that annoyed me a little bit, when it came to how she responded to the other characters in the story. It was just sort of an apathetic, and she always seemed disconnected from everyone and everything. It made me wish that the secondary characters had been a deeper part of the story, even though this was a mystery and was mostly about her sister's disappearance. Speaking of sister, I was hoping for a bit more with Ella but I understand why she wasn't a huge part of this. And though I wish that Claire's and Grant's relationship had given me more feels, I think it was really sweet and not too much or not too little. I love how Grant stayed by her side through everything, even when truths come to light and they're both no longer sure what is actually going on.

The plot was so twisty and mysterious and just freaking awesome. The way the author wove all of the elements together, and the way she played up the suspense kept me intrigued the whole way through. I was constantly guessing what was going to happen and being mostly wrong. And, without giving anything away, I just have to say that I loved how she wrote a certain element of the story. In way too many books I've read, it's never been written that well, which is why I so appreciated how she handled it all.

Although I was a little disappointed with the ending, I thought it was kind of perfect for the story, if that makes sense. I think I know why she chose to end it like that, but there are still so many parts of this story that I'm confused about. I buddy read this with my friend and we both realized that there were quite a few elements of the story that were left way too open for the both of us. We're a little confused. But, even with the confusion, I still loved this. It's been a long time since I've read a book that has surprised me as much as this one had.

Of Scars and Stardust had a slow beginning, but once the story picked up, it became a need for me to find out what was happening and what was real. And I'm still unsure about how much of this was real, but like I said, I don't even care about that. This was a very good, well-written mystery that kept me guessing the whole time.

Confusing, intriguing, mind-blowing
By Meredith @ Pandora's Books
Of Scars and Stardust is probably the most weird, confusing, intriguing mind-twist of a book I have ever in my life read. Never have I been so torn between wanting to DNF and wanting to get to the end and finally get answers. Never have I been so torn with how to rate a book. A book that manages to confuse and intrigue a reader as much as this one did deserves to be read.

I couldn’t stand the characters in this book. They all annoyed me so much and in so many ways. I think that was the first thing that made me want to DNF. I never connected to Claire, at all. She made stupid decisions and was very immature and disconnected. But knowing what I know now that I’ve finished the book, I understand why. I still did NOT like her, but I understand why she was the way that she was.

I absolutely hated Rae with such a passion. I don’t think I’ve ever hated a character as much as Rae. She was a horrible friend, a mean person and, at times, down-right nasty. I never understood her motives for any of the things she did. I don’t feel like we got any closure with her story.

Ella was annoying. Probably the most annoying younger sibling character in the history of annoying younger siblings. She was a stubborn tag-along who refused to listen. But she also had Claire for a sister, so that couldn’t have been easy. I was really confused by the plot because of something that happens early on – it didn’t mesh with the synopsis. It takes a few pages to realize what we THINK happened, didn’t actually happen. But it still threw me.

Grant was.. Odd. And annoying and I was always suspicious of him for various reasons. I didn’t feel the chemistry between him and Claire at all. I couldn’t picture them together. It felt like he was just humoring her most of the time. They also seemed to enter into a relationship very suddenly and with no warning, explanation or discussion. I definitely didn’t expect what happened in the end and I feel like we were left hanging with some things.

About half-way through reading, I came up with several theories. Both turned out to be partially correct. I think the twist at the end, what the truth ended up being, was my favorite part of this book. It explained a lot and made me look back at a lot of what had happened with a clear mind. I think this is the kind of book you need to read twice in order to fully appreciate it.

The ending was incredibly twisty and crazy and mind-blowing and I’m still not sure I fully understand what happened. I mean, I do.. But I don’t. I know that doesn’t make sense, but it goes back to my theory that this is the kind of book that has to be read twice in order to fully understand and appreciate it.

Despite my desire to DNF early on, this book was riveting and refused to let me go. I was confused and flabbergasted and had no clue what was going on, but I knew I would go crazy if I didn’t read every single page until the very end to get some answers and get my theories confirmed or denied. I’m incredibly impressed by Hannah’s ability to pull off multiple epic plot twists. I’m a pretty good guesser and even I couldn’t fully comprehend what was going on until the very end. Because every time I thought one of my theories was correct, Hannah threw a wrench in the story and did something that made me doubt said theory. She did a mind-blowing job of playing cat-and-mouse with my head – I STILL can’t stop thinking about this book, what happened and how it ended. Despite my many complaints, this is the type of book that will keep me up at night, pondering WTF just happened.

So yes, I gave this book 3-stars. But yes, I absolutely, 100% fully insist (nicely, of course!) that you get this book from your local bookstore, library, Amazon – wherever you shop – ASAP and read it. Even if, like me, you don’t enjoy it at first, I implore you to push through until the very last page. Because this is the kind of book that will stay with you for a very long time, whether you enjoy it or not, whether you want it to or not. And personally, I’m hoping there’s a sequel because I feel like so many things were left unsaid and I’m curious to see what happens next.
