Acción incesante tras cada página, junto a una profunda descripción de los sentimientos de los personajes ante cada una de las situaciones y pérdidas que se producen tanto en esta entrega como en las que se arrastran de las anteriores, que permite disfrutar un libro muy íntegro. Sin embargo, mientras lo leía, no dejaba de cuestionarme el innecesario alargue de esta saga, que finalmente sólo logra disminuir el interés. Además, la relación de Jace y Clary prácticamente pasa a segundo plano, con algunos momentos emocionantes, pero que no destacan. En realidad, es la tónica de toda la novela: está bien, pero no destaca.

Awesome and Varied Giant Monster Tales!

This is an outstanding collection of giant, threatening creature tales! Despite the cover, just under half of the 21 stories collected focus on Godzilla-type city crushing mayhem. However, all are enjoyable and cover such a wide range of possibilities and styles it shouldn't be an issue for the reader. You're bound to revisit an old favorite and to discover a new one!

Although not arranged in this manner in the book, here's the eras the tales cover:

For starters, you've got the older 'classic' and 'weird tales' era stories: 'The Monster-God of Mamurth' (Edmond Hamilton), 'Ooze' (Anthony R. Rud), 'The Valley of the Worm'*** (Robert E. Howard), 'The Eggs from Lake Tanganyika' (Curt Siodmak), 'The Dunwich Horror'*** (H.P. Lovecraft), 'The Island of the Ud' (William Hope Hodgson), and 'The Monster of Lake Lametrie'*** (Wardon Allan Curtis).

In my humble opinion, the first two and last four stories in this catagory ALONE make it worthwhile to purchase! It's interesting to note the prevalence of 'urban fantasy' themes within this category as well. While one or two are somewhat head-scratchers as to their inclusion ('Deviations from a Theme' for example), there's not a stinker in the book.

I was particularly amused by 'The Giant Cat of Sumatra', involving Egyptian goddess 'police', managed to include both a certain Victorian-era detective and mention of a certain Lovecraftian Old One!

I highly recommend this tome for your collection of monster fiction!

A great tribute to '50's style monster movies. People criticize these stories and call them B-movies, but done right they can be pure entertainment. The majority of the stories in the Big Book of Monsters are done right. Well worth the money.

I'm a huge Correia fan, so I got this for his short (which was awesome) but really have enjoyed the other stories as well. Quite a few ententriharken back to the beginning years of sci fi and it is like looking through a window in time.

Chronicling the adventures of Joe, Kevin, and Omar, this series is a really great read for any young male sports fan. It’s filled with unique tales each occurring at a different MLB stadium, as well as relatable characters and experiences for boys around an elementary and/or middle grade age group. I’d highly recommend this series to any young boys who are involved in athletics, specifically baseball. The numerous historical baseball facts, legends, and players the books include, give its readers teams and players (both of the past and the present) to look up to and may even highlight those they already root for!

This series is one that will appeal to any young, male, sports fan in elementary or middle school. It is a fun, light, and enjoyable read centered around Joe, Kevin, and Omar—the “Baseball Geeks”—and their quest to return the Glory Ball back to where it belongs. Young readers in elementary or middle school will be able to relate to these characters and perhaps even be inspired by the boys’ determination and drive to fulfill their ultimate goal. I’d therefore highly recommend this to any young reader and sports fan!

Michael Marshall is a full-time writer. His novels include 'The Straw Men' and 'The Lonely Dead', and he also writes short stories and screenplays. Two of his earlier novels written under the name of Michael Marshall Smith, 'Spares' and 'One of Us', have been optioned by major Hollywood studios. He lives in North London with his wife.

What a ride!

This book is supposedly the last in the Straw Man series. I rather hope there are more -- I like the characters and the entire concept was clever. The basic idea is that there is a sort of secret society that is thousands of years old. These people consider themselves evolutionarily different from the rest of us -- they believe we have succumbed to a virus that makes us altruistic. They are not and are responsible for many of the worst events of history. That is an original idea for a mystery thriller. The hero and heroine battle these people through three books. In particular, the protagonist's twin brother is one of the worst. This would make an interesting film -- the star could play both the bad guy and the good guy. The first book in the series was interesting, but I had doubts. The second one was much better (and the writing is probably the best of the three). The third one makes a perfect end. I recommend these books if you like this kind of reading.

Another dark, apocalyptic thriller... but totally anticlimactic.

Just finished up Michael Marshall's trilogy, and I'm having a difficult time separating Blood of Angels out of the pack for this review. For the uninitiated, go back and start at the beginning, with the Straw Men and The Upright Man novels, and work your way through, or you may be in for some confusion. The series is planted firmly in X-Files territory, and, as with the X-Files, there's lots going on, enough that keeping track is essential: In Marshall's world, surreal, horrific conspiracies and cover-ups abound. In fact, he goes as far as to reference the X-Files early in Blood of Angels, during a drug deal about to go strangely wrong.

Here, our Mulder and Scully are ex-CIA intelligence agent Ward Hopkins and FBI agent Nina Baynam, who, after the bloody events in the previous books, are now hiding out in a small cabin, secluded on the edge of the Washington State forest. Their semi-idyllic life is cut short with the sudden - but not entirely unexpected - arrival of Nina's FBI boss, who's come with news. The story jumps into gear as they learn of a new, possibly female serial killer, and the kicker - the escape of Ward's murderous twin brother, a serial killer called The Upright Man, who is - was? - part of a powerful, world-wide cabal of killers who believe the rest of us are infected with a communal sort of virus that makes us behave more-or-less like sheep. They view themselves as the wolves in this demented scenario, and therefore, well, we're ripe for the picking.

Unlike the X-files, however, which presented its version of space-aliens, governmental cover-ups and general weirdness as a growing mystery waiting to be uncovered, Marshall has structured his premise in a much more straightforward manner: There's a big group of serial killers out there, firmly entrenched in all walks of life, and they're planning something BIG.

Quite an apocalypic scenario, eh? Unfortunately, Marshall wimps out on us. Nothing against his writing per se: the books in and of themselves are entertaining enough, taken as a breezy way to pass the time at the beach; the characters are well-drawn and there's action and intrigue aplenty, and we're treated to Marshalls' sly, cynical humor and cultural observations which helps break up the otherwise oppressive atmosphere. The problem is that (unless, perhaps, there is to be another book, say...) for all the big, ominous setup, nothing much happens. And in the end, we don't uncover much more about the Straw Men than we already knew from the first book. I'd hoped Marshall would explore this group he's created (a group that is not so unlike the terrorist organizations operating in the real world) and to see how deep the evil really goes, but no. Instead, we're basically told again and again that they're devious and untouchable mass-murderers. Great. Whooo. Creepy.

I was left feeling feeling vaguely unsatisfied, like I'd choked down a stale pastry and cup of lukewarm coffee for breakfast, instead of having the artery-clogging plate of butter-smeared waffles and eggs and hot, greasy bacon and hash browns that I really wanted. For all of that, because the premise is so intriguing and holds so much untapped potential, I hope Marshall is inspired to give us another, final chapter in the Straw Men legacy.

Reed Arvin delivers with Blood of Angels

Blood of Angels was the first Reed Arvin book that I have read, and it is not going to be the last. Blood of Angels delivers on all levels and introduces a cast of characters that is very interesting.

While you are reading from the perspective of a lawyer, this is not a court room legal thriller, this is a book about revenge pure and simple. There are multiple sub-plots and action that keep the story moving along, and you will not want to put this one down.

Reed Arvin writes in the first person, which I thought would be a distraction, but I really enjoyed the smooth style. I would recommend this book to all who are looking for an interesting plot, and a fast moving book that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat.

About the Author Buck Martinez has been a corporate executive for over 30 years. He has been responsible for a diverse number of functions, including generation development, labor relations, and strategic planning. He is also a nationally-acclaimed speaker on Clean Energy. Recently, Buck launched a non-profit organization, Student ACES, to provide leadership training, mentoring, and internships for high school students. Buck has always been very involved with students. He has coached many youth sports teams, mentored young men, and has participated in numerous speaking engagements at universities throughout Florida. While in college, Buck was captain of the baseball team from his sophomore through senior seasons. He received numerous honors but is most proud of the Scholar Athlete Award. He has a bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas University and an MBA from Nova Southeastern. He is a graduate of the Boston University Leadership program, and a member of the Lifeworks Leadership 2014 class. He resides in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, with his wife of 33 years, three daughters, and four grandchildren.

Excellent Investment

This a valuable book for both parents and young adults. Its written by an individual who's advocation throughout his successful professional career and very busy life-style has been to mentor and coach young people. I believe this book is written from the heart and mind based on education and experience with the sole purpose of assisting young people make good choices in adolescent years to help them get on the right path for a successful adult life. Its a quick easy read well worth the time.

Buck exemplifies the importance of "leadership" and why "management" is not the same. His book reflects his outstanding character, stewardship, candor, and discipline. Gentle story of hope and conviction.

Christmas Grace, Signing Seeds is a gentle story about a widow's journey in coming to terms with her husband's death. Grace and Chris had planned to have children and raise them together, but God has other plans. Just as Grace is ready to slow concentrate less on her career and more on her husband's wish to have a child, he is taken from her. She is overcome with grief, but her mother and sister are there to support her, as well as the people in her church.

It seemed that much of the first half of the story is told through inner dialogue, even though it's written in third person. The action picks up more in the second half, when Faith and Liz, Grace's sister and mother, begin to help her dig her way out of the crippling grief. She finds her support group is even wider when she goes back to the church where she and Chris worshipped.

The happily-ever-after was definitely not what I expected, although it's a nice pleasant one. Grace learns to trust in God's timing and His plan for her life, and when she does that, everything else falls into place. It's a great reminder.

Enjoyable, quick read

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Christmas Grace, Signing Seeds is a quick, enjoyable read. The story starts off slow with Grace and her love for her husband - how sick he was and her love for him. I was surprised that he died so quickly when he was still mobile and able to drink liquids with no hospice care being called in.

Grace's grief is portrayed in the days after his death, seeing a therapist, then light at the end of the tunnel. If Ps Barbara was such a good friend and she was such a valued member of the church and worship team, why did no one visit or check on her other than her mother and sister? God spoke to Ps Barbara to tell Grace to sow a signing seed, but He doesn't speak through His Word when He says to care for widows and orphans?

However, the book is about Grace and her journey - through grief and to motherhood. While some parts felt rushed or glossed over, the book as a whole was enjoyable.

As they try to settle into this strange new life, tensions between the humans and the Anaedorians grow, creating rifts between Lavida and her friends. To make matters worse, Frio, Amoral Hunter Leader, is hiding out in the Upland, and when he goes after Lavida, he starts in motion a series of events that could end up costing Lavida her life.

When author, Kristina Schram, was growing up she wanted to be a star. When that didn’t turn out quite like she expected, she turned her mind to achieving other goals: Earning her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, working as an Artist-in-Residence at local schools, being a free-lance editor and reader, coaching parks & rec basketball, protecting the earth through recycling and using green products, and publishing her first novel, a YA fantasy called The Chronicles of Anaedor: The Prophecies. Knowing what it’s like to struggle with self-doubt and lack of confidence, her biggest dream (in addition to owning a castle) is to stamp out low self-esteem for everyone, especially young people. She lives in beautiful, wooded New Hampshire with her husband, three boys, and various pets, and can also throw a tomahawk, if need be. One of her favorite things to do is walk with her dog in the woods, where she searches for the impossible around every corner. Sometimes she finds it.
