The Complete Father Brown Stories (Wordsworth Classics), by G.K. Chesterton

With an Introduction by David Stuart Davies.

Father Brown, one of the most quirkily genial and lovable characters to emerge from English detective fiction, first made his appearance in The Innocence of Father Brown in 1911. That first collection of stories established G.K. Chesterton's kindly cleric in the front rank of eccentric sleuths.

This complete collection contains all the favourite Father Brown stories, showing a quiet wit and compassion that has endeared him to many, whilst solving his mysteries by a mixture of imagination and a sympathetic worldliness in a totally believable manner.

The theological equal of Sherlock Holmes.
By Godly Gadfly
In the genre of the finely crafted English detective story, Chesterton's "Father Brown" stories are wholesome and stimulating detective tales surpassed by few others, except perhaps Doyle's legendary Sherlock Holmes. In contrast to the arrogant Holmes, however, Chesterton's protagonist is rather quiet, unassuming and modest, and makes an unlikely hero - a catholic priest. Father Brown's simple manner makes you quick to underestimate him, but the startling flashes of brilliance that spill from beneath his humble exterior soon make you realize that he has a firm grasp on the truth of a situation when you are as yet frustratingly distant from it. His perceptive one-liners make it evident that he has a clear insight into something that you see only as an apparently insoluble paradox.
Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox", and the Father Brown stories are a clear testimony of his fondness for paradox. Ultimately it is not just crimes that Brown must solve, but the paradox underlying them. In fact, not all stories are crime stories - among them are mysterious situations that do not involve criminals, and it is the perceptive insight of Father Brown that is needed make apparent contradictions comprehensible by his ruthless logic. Father Brown is not so much concerned with preserving life or bringing a criminal to justice as he is with unravelling the strands of an impossible paradox. In fact, Chesterton's conception of Father Brown is itself a paradox - both a cleric and a crime-fighter, a priest and a policeman, a representative of God's mercy and an instrument of God's justice, a proclaimer of forgiveness and a seeker of guilt, a listener in the confessional and a questioner in the interrogation.
How a priest could possibly play the role of a detective is explained in the first story, "The Blue Cross". Brown apprehends the confounded criminal Flambeau and explains that his knowledge of the criminal mind is due in part to what he's heard at the confessional booth "We can't help being priests. People come and tell us these things." When Flambeau retorts "How in blazes do you know all these horrors?" Chesterton allows his humble priest to attribute his insight into human depravity to his experience as a priest: "Oh, by being a celibate simpleton, I suppose, he said. Has it never struck you that a man who does next to nothing but hear men's real sins is not likely to be wholly unaware of human evil."
But both Chesterton and Father Brown have insight into much more than just human depravity - they are both champions of Catholic orthodoxy. This gives the Father Brown stories a depth not found in Brown's compatriot Holmes. In the course of Chesterton's stories, we are treated to philosophical discussions about catholic theology, such as the relationship between faith and reason. We do not merely meet an assortment of cobblers, blacksmiths, magistrates and generals, but atheists, legalists, secularists, pagans, Presbyterians, Puritans, Protestants and Catholics, all with varying and vying affections for superstition, naturalism, rationalism, scepticism, agnosticism, materialism, anarchism, nihilism, or cynicism. Along with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Chesterton was one of the few writers in the twentieth century that made an important contribution to English literature that was stamped by Christian principles instead of the prevailing secularism of the day.
Readers who do not share Chesterton's theological convictions will not concur with all his insights, but they must concede that they are enjoyable, profound and stimulating. Somewhat surprising is the occasional use of blasphemous expletives such as "O my God", although generally from the mouths of others than Father Brown himself. And Brown does seem to degenerate more and more into a mouthpiece for Chesterton, with a sermonizing tone not present in the first stories.
But on the whole these are exemplary models of the English crime short story. The Penguin edition contains all the stories from all five of Chesterton's published Father Brown collections. Among my favorites are "The Blue Cross", where Father Brown follows a mysterious trail of clues and engages in some bizarre behaviour and fascinating theological discourse to apprehend Flambeau. "The Hammer of God" is also an outstanding whodunnit, as Brown solves the murder of a man who has been crushed by a huge hammer outside a church, seemingly the recipient of a divine thunderbolt of judgment from heaven. In the process Chesterton shares some thought-provoking insights, such as the memorable: "Humility is the mother of giants. One sees great things from the valley; only small things from the peak." Also unforgettable is "The Blast of the Book", which recounts the mysterious disappearance of five men whose only crime was to open a seemingly magical book. Father Brown is quick to unravel the paradox by explaining it as the work of an ingenious prankster.
Father Brown's tongue never fails to produce profound paradoxical gems such as "The point of the pin was that it was pointless." And: "I never should have thought he would be so illogical as to die in order to avoid death." It is Brown's unique perspective that allows him to see what others do not see. When his compatriots are awed at the eloquence of a magistrate's thundering sermon in "the Mirror of the Magistrate", Father Brown remarks: "I think the thing that struck me most was how different men look in their wigs. You talk about the prosecuting barrister being so tremendous. But I happened to see him take his wig off for a minute, and he really looks quite a different man. He's quite bald, for one thing."
With the finely crafted prose, depth of theological insight, and brilliant combination of perception and paradox, Chesterton has created in Father Brown a noble and enduring character, a worthy successor to Sherlock Holmes and in some respects his equal and superior. The Father Brown stories are unquestionably worthy of their designation as classics.

Lots of great short mysteries
By lental
I have been reading Agatha Christie mysteries for years and noted in one of the biogrqphical sketches about her that she and Chesterton were contemporaries and collaborators. So when I finished a "Complete Collection" of Christie works which wss nowhere near complete, I decided to give Father Brown a try.

Based on another review, I understand that three key works are not included in this "complete" collection and while that is disappointing, I feel that I have already gotten my 99-cents worth. I have been reading this book for weeks...usually a story or two a night...and, according to my Kindle, I'm still only 46% through the collection.

So far I have been enthralled with Father Brown, a rumpled and humble version of Hercule Poirot. While Poirot is tidy, arrogant and opinionated, Father Brown is self-deprecating, courteous and quiet. But Father Brown's mind, like Poirot's, is a steel trap. And, like Poirot, Father Brown has a way of circumventing the obvious to zone in on hidden reality. Anyone who is a fan of Poirot certainly must be a fan of Father Brown.

The other reviewer who identified the missing works not included in this collection also recommended the "Complete Father Brown Mysteries [annotated,...]" and I assume that means the three missing works are included. While I'm happy with this version, I suspect I'll spend another 99-cents to get the annotated version in order to finish the entire Father Brown collection. I strongly recommend Father Brown and suggest that the annotated version might be a better choice for the same price.

Incomplete!
By Mystery Girl
Amazon has somehow confused two similar but separate books in the same listing. I was very disappointed to find that one of these "Complete" collections, the one with the color cover, leaves out at least three important Father Brown stories, including "The Donnington Affair" and "Mask of Midas." Without these it's really nothing you couldn't pick up for free at Gutenberg or other online book sites. For a more complete version I chose The Complete Father Brown Mysteries [Annotated, With Introduction, Rare Additional Material] (with the black-and-white cover).

The Devil you DON'T know.......
By Amazon Customer
What if you found out Darth Vader was YOUR father? You might ask him for Tie Fighter flying lessons or how you can impress the ladies with your awesome lightsaber. Pretty cool, huh? But what if you found out an evil demon was your dad? Just what do you get this guy for fathers day? A new pike for skewering souls in hell? A good cologne to cover up that tell-tale brimstone smell? A Steeler's Nation Snuggie? Well, these may not EXACTLY be Louis dilemmas in Morningstars but he does discover his father is a demon and it's not the father/son reunion one would hope. This novel gives the reader a lot to gnaw on; an offer that sounds too good to refuse, murder, soul snatching, determined gum shoes, a best friend that's a bird and did I mention demons? Evidently, you can't trust a demon but you can trust that Nick Kisella pens an engaging novel that you won't want to put down....even if a demon tells you to, don't listen they're notorious bullshitters.

By Ethel
I do not usually read science fiction novels but a friend of mine said the story was pretty good. I read the book in two sittings;found it making me want to find out how the story ended.
I read about a novel a week, have done so since I was about 18 yrs old and I am 74 now so you can see that I am not new to reading! The story is good, held my interest and the reading is easy. I would, and have, recomend this book to my "reading" friends. (Infact four of my friends have bought the book!)
I will purchase any fututre novels that Nick Kisella writes.

While not a usual fan of the horror/fantasy/occult genre,I picked this up on a recommendation. More along the lines of "try it - you might like it" and now a whole new world of fiction has opened up for me. This is a fast and compelling read with a story unlike anything I have read and yet.....references to classic literature, pop culture, cult movies, and even the bible abound. Tara Spencer is the new mother of a baby girl—one who, by all accounts, should not exist.

And though her worries go far beyond diapers and feeding times, she finds herself settling comfortably into the community of Willow Springs, away from the prying eyes of The Brotherhood religious order and former-flame-turned-betrayer Cyril Woods.

But when her daughter goes missing and her best friend is violently attacked, Tara’s newfound sense of security comes to a screeching halt. She realizes that nowhere will be safe until she solves the mystery of her virgin pregnancy once and for all.

While DNA testing seems to lead to more questions than answers, Tara struggles to separate friend from foe—until a series of shocking discoveries finally sheds light on the greater meaning behind her unusual situation.

In the stunning second installment of The Awakening series, societal roles are tested and religious norms questioned—in a thrilling paranormal page-turner combining elements of Rosemary’s Baby and The Da Vinci Code.

Believe it
By Atlas
Read The Unbelievers, but read The Awakening first. This second book in the series reveals the answers to some of the questions raised in book one, but then ends with two new cliffhangers that await resolution in book three (or four). The Unbelievers also introduces new characters who add depth and warmth to the story. Like The Awakening, The Unbelievers leaves you uncertain who is good and who is evil. The book is an easy read with a thrilling plot, but it also challenges the core religious and moral beliefs of its characters and readers.

Second installment of a captivating series leaves the reader hungering for more!
By Robert King
The Unbelievers is the second in what promises to be a very entertaining three or four book series. The first book in the series is The Awakening, and I highly recommend reading it before reading The Unbelievers so that the reader gets the full benefit of the story, although there are enough references to happenings in The Awakening in the second book that the reader can pick up the gist of the story. The premise of this series is captivating: a teenage girl named Tara is pregnant, but has never had sex. Could her child be the next messiah? That proposition is problematic for organized Christian religion (primarily the Catholic Church) because her child is a girl. The Unbelievers follows Tara's journey to find out the meaning of her pregnancy and her daughter's role in the world, and shadowy forces' efforts to thwart her search. After harrowing adventures in foreign lands, and seemingly miraculous instances of healing performed by Tara and (or?) her daughter, Tara is able to bring back fragments of an ancient document that may reveal the answers she seeks. But the Unbelievers ends with some frightening possibilities being exposed, and great uncertainty about Tara, her daughter and those around her who profess to be her supporters. A well-told story that will provoke thought, and leave the reader hungering for the next installment.

A Page Turner
By J. Adducci
This is truly a page turner that is hard to put down. It continues the story of Tara and her baby. Tara travels to several locales (exotic and otherwise) which are very well established and described. Great pacing with action scenes alternating with passages that build the suspense. Some of the same characters from The Awakening appear along with some interesting new ones. If you liked The Awakening you will like this one too. I can't wait for the next volume to see what happens next.

Music and Lies (George and Finn Book 1) by Gill-Marie Stewart

Fifteen year old George Wray tells her parents one little lie. She goes with her step-sister Becky the the Forest Music Festival. There she meets a good looking young man named Finn. Soon one lie becomes two.

But for Finn the Forest Festival means haunting memories and dangerous deals. He’s worried about Becky and her naive little sister George. He didn't plan on them finding out the truth. Soon everyone's life is in danger.
A well written story.

I really liked George. She is young naive and thinks she knows more than her parents. The lies she tells each parent is truly believable. Becky the wiser step-sister(to me) was likable as well. Unknowingly Becky uts her sister into a bad situation. The trouble they get themselves into seemed real, something that could happen in the world today. I won't say too much more because I don't do spoilers.

Music and Lies is a fantastic young adult (dramatic) story. Filled with music, fun and unexpected dangerous situation. A great read!

Not just for zombie fans
By Andrew J. Young
Of the Dead & Dying is indeed full of tales of the apocalypse. Many different apocalypses (apocalypsii?) are encompassed in these stories. The majority of the stories (though not all) feature an end-of-days overrun by zombies, but even the many zombie stories approach the apocalypse differently. So, if you're worried that you'll be sick of zombies after only a story or two, let me assure you that each tale keeps the genre fresh and tells a compelling story.

A couple of the stories in here are graphic or otherwise intense, but it's no worse than watching The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones.

For such a narrow genre, the collection of stories manage to be very diverse. These stories encompass the horrific, the dramatic, the tragic, and even the comedic. This is not just an anthology for zombie fans; anyone who enjoys good storytelling can enjoy the short stories in this anthology.

Spectacular Short Stories
By A Wild Derp
Darn good collection of post apocalyptic stories. My favorite by far was Five Mouths by A.E. Santana. All of the stories in this anthology are very well done and they are all different styles and stories... but that story left me feeling grimy before I could even finish. It is macabre and psychologically horrific, overall a superb zombie/post apocalyptic tale.

I strongly recommend for anyone interested in a variety of post apocalyptic or zombie literature. The stories are varied and for $5 on the kindle, its a pretty good deal.

Review
On The Cutting Room

A Kirkus Excellent Horror Read for October

“This themed anthology revolves around the idea that the separation between what is real and what we see on film is not as clear as we'd like to think it is. What if, for example, the Wicked Witch of the West didn't stay in Oz? What if James Dean got a second chance at life? These are just some of the weird-but-cool ideas explored in this tempting volume of stories from renowned editor Ellen Datlow, who collects 23 scary tales by the likes of Peter Straub, Genevieve Valentine, Robert Shearman, Laird Barron and more.”
—Kirkus

A Publishers Weekly Book of the Week

STARRED REVIEW “Superstar editor Datlow makes no missteps in this reprint collection of dark tales involving movies and moviemaking. The one original piece, Stephen Graham Jones’s “Tenderizer,” is a haunting exploration of tragedy on both a personal and national level. A.C. Wise’s “Final Girl Theory,” about a cult film that’s an “infection, whispered from mouth to mouth in the dark,” is disturbing and gory without fetishizing its horrors. Kim Newman’s brilliant “Illimitable Dominion” tells an alternate history of Edgar Allen Poe, Roger Corman, and American International Pictures that’s particularly suited to film buffs who will probably spot the (initially) subtle changes to the time line. Film critic and author Genevieve Valentine provides both an entertaining story (“She Drives the Men to Crimes of Passion!”) and an enlightening introduction, while even Douglas E. Winter’s “Bright Lights, Big Zombie”—the literary target of which has long faded—still holds up reasonably well. Strong stories by Gary McMahon and Gary A. Braunbeck, as well as poems by Lucy A. Snyder and Daphne Gottlieb, are also worth noting, but really, the entire volume is outstanding.”
—Publishers Weekly

“This collection of 23 stories should appeal to fans of horror and SF primarily, though noir and hard-boiled-mystery readers should feel welcome too.... Definitely worth checking out.”
—Booklist

“Horror stories about the cinema in some capacity. There was no way I wouldn't like this book, regardless of whether I was a horror and film buff or not. Datlow's pretty much the master of the anthology, and it shows here.”

“It's pretty much a given that an Ellen Datlow anthology will at least be good, if not great... 'The Cutting Room' is no exception.”
—Bookshots

“Horror cinephiles and bibliophiles will have extra cause to rejoice this Halloween: The Cutting Room, a literary anthology, is an October treat.”
—Diabolique

“When Datlow’s name is on the cover, however, you know the collection will contain the highest quality writing and arranging.... The Cutting Room is a major success.”
—Ensuing Chapters

“I personally feel that short fiction is the ideal format for horror and dark fantasy literature and the theme of film/film-making is absolutely brilliant and Datlow collects a very nice assortment. This collection is highly recommended.”

Through a Lens Darkly
By L. Columbus
First of all, as editor Ellen Datlow states in her introduction to this anthology; not all of the stories are "horror stories per se". Each of the tales involve films or the film industry and most, if not falling directly into the horror genre, are certainly very dark. I recently read a wonderful interview with Ms. Datlow where she briefly explained her thought process when putting together an anthology. After reading the interview, I have a better understanding of why almost anything she puts her name on is consistently of such high quality. This collection is no exception. In the introduction she states that she sifted through over 115 submissions, finally whittling it down to the stories presented here. While a couple of the tales didn't instantly reveal their secrets to me, they each left me feeling and thinking long after finishing them. Several of the authors were new to me and some were old favorites, I was especially happy to find a story by Howard Waldrop. He is a criminally uncelebrated writer and master of the short story form. Hopefully his inclusion here will lead to new readers discovering his work.

The anthology starts with Edward Bryant's THE CUTTER, a sort of coming of age tale, with a sinister twist. It was my first time reading anything by this author, but it won't be my last. To put it in filmic terms, if his story was an actual film, it would be directed by Rob Reiner's evil twin.

Steve Nagy's THE HANGED MAN OF OZ is a paranoid fever dream of a tale. You may never be able to watch The Wizard Of Oz again, without thinking of this story. I know I won't. The film of this would be directed by Brian DePalma.

DEADSPACE by Dennis Etchison quickly made me feel as if I was watching a David Lynch movie in my mind. This tale of a doomed Hollywood producer is surreal and unforgettable.

I'm sure most anyone reading this is already familiar with the work of F. Paul Wilson. His story CUTS is nothing less than what you would expect, a horrifying voodoo tale with a deliciously satisfying ending. The film version for me, would have to be directed by Wes Craven.

FINAL GIRL THEORY by A. C. Wise is a disturbing tale that slowly creeps up on you. Your interest in finding out the truth behind the cult film described in the story, will lead to a most unhappy ending, for you and the main protagonist. For director on this one, I'd select Eduardo Sanchez (Blair Witch Project).

Next up is LAPLAND, OR FILM NOIR by Peter Straub. In all honesty, I don't know what to make of this contribution. I'm afraid it is simply that I don't understand the style of writing Mr. Straub uses here. It seems to be somehow breaking down film noir into its various tropes, but that's as far as I can discern. This makes me wish that each author had included a brief introduction to their stories. I would certainly like to learn exactly what he was doing in this piece.

Ian Watson's THE THOUSAND CUTS is a disorienting, apocalyptic tale that moves along quickly and leaves you with a haunting final image. My choice for director of the film version would be George Miller (Mad Max).

As I mentioned at the start, Howard Waldrop is an author whose work I am delighted to see here. His contribution OCCAM'S DUCKS is an off beat tale involving the early days of black cinema. Mr. Waldrop also includes a brief afterword that explains his inspirations for the story.

DEAD IMAGE by David Morrell really captivated me. His story centers around how things might play out, if a real life famous actor who tragically died young, were to somehow come back for a second chance. This is one of the stand out entries for me, I loved it. Director on this one would have to be George Romero.

THE CONSTANTINOPLE ARCHIVES by Robert Shearman is an alternate history story, that imagines a world where filmmaking began in the 1400s, during the siege of Constantinople. It's an interesting read that ends on a beautifully hopeful note.

EACH THING I SHOW YOU IS A PIECE OF MY DEATH by Gemma Files and Stephen J. Barringer, gave me a few nightmares after finishing it just before bed. The narrative threads out in a series of journal entries, e-mails and transcripts. Since aspects of it brought to mind the film The Ring, I could see it being directed by Gore Verbinski.

CINDER IMAGES by Gary McMahon introduces you to a man who has just left the movie theater. The film he witnessed was disturbing, but has it ended simply because he left the theater? I'd pick David Fincher, to give the film version of this tale the right amount of dark claustrophobia.

In THE PIED PIPER OF HAMMERSMITH, I can only deduce that the main character is mentally ill and we are riding along for his final descent into madness. The film he's directing in his head, will lead to disastrous consequences for his "cast". This would be another one that lends itself to David Lynch's style.

Gary Kilworth's FILMING THE MAKING OF THE FILM OF THE MAKING OF FITZCARRALDO (I had to go back several times, to make sure I had that title correct!), follows along as some intrepid amateur filmmakers, attempt to surreptitiously document director Werner Herzog's filming of Fitzcarraldo. When they decide to instigate a scene for their documentary, things go bad. I can see Francis Coppola directing this, he's familiar with steamy jungles.

ONLOOKERS by Gary A. Braunbeck is a story I had encountered somewhere before, because it quickly came back to me as I started reading it. It's a creepy tale involving a few icons of classic early cinema and what happens to a film student who is a bit too perceptive. If Alfred Hitchcock were alive today, I think a story like this might appeal to him. There are plenty of opportunities for great visuals and I'd enjoy seeing them translated from my mind, to the screen.

Next is a short poem by Lucy A. Snyder titled RECREATION and it seems fitting that it follows, since it is somewhat of an homage to Hitchcock.

BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG ZOMBIE by Douglas E. Winter, provides a unique take on the zombie tale. We spend some time with a heartbroken Gorehound, as he tries to hold it together in a world where a zombie outbreak has actually occurred. To make matters worse, splatter films and magazines dealing with the living dead are now illegal. Let's tap Zack Snyder to direct this one. He could blend the horror and and humorous aspects required.

SHE DRIVES MEN TO CRIMES OF PASSION by Genevieve Valentine, is a beautiful tale by yet another unfamiliar author I'll be seeking more from. The noirish story involves a beautiful up and coming actress with an unexpected secret. An aspiring director learns her secret and wants to exploit it. The ending of this one left me sad, satisfied and swooning.

Joel Lane's EVEN THE PAWN delivers the right cross, after the uppercut delivered by Ms. Valentine's story. What appears to be a simple murder mystery, snakes along toward a hauntingly poetic ending.

TENDERIZER from Stephen Graham Jones, offers a disturbing look at the possible melding of reality and found footage type cinema. I almost found myself dreading each paragraph of this, as if something too horrible for me to take was going to be revealed.

Next up is ARDOR by Laird Barron. I'm a huge fan of Mr. Barron's work and this story is a wonderful example of his writing style, for those who may be new to him. You can see that every sentence is carefully crafted, individually coming together to form a cerebral, cinematic blockbuster.

FINAL GIRL II: THE FRAME by Daphne Gottlieb is a dithyramb style poem dedicated to the female heroine. I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to poetry, so I hope I'm not far off the mark in that comment.

The anthology ends with ILLIMITABLE DOMINION by Kim Newman. This first person narrative is told by the agent of an out of work chimpanzee. His efforts to find a starring vehicle for his client, end up connecting him with Roger Corman. The poor chimp doesn't get the part, but his agent's paperback copy of Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination inspires Mr. Corman and history ensues, but with a slight revisionist twist.

As I stated at the start, you can't go wrong with anything assembled by Ellen Datlow. This collection of stories shouldn't just appeal to fans of film, horror, or weird fiction. The tales here are simply examples of damn good writing.

I figured that there couldn't possibly be a better pick for me to request
By Char's Horror Corner
3.5 stars!

I was excited to find this anthology up for review at Net Galley. I'm still very new over there, and I figured that there couldn't possibly be a better pick for me to request. I have loved anthologies like this since I was a kid. I cut my teeth on the likes of Dennis Etchison, Graham Masterton, Harlan Ellison and Dougles E. Winter and I've read a number of anthologies edited by Ellen Datlow. Unfortunately, of the twenty three tales within, there were only 7 that rated 4 stars or above with me.

In this collection, the stories are loosely connected by film. To be clear, not all of these stories are horror or dark fiction, which was fine. It's just that a lot of them just didn't resonate with me. I will briefly mention the tales that I thought worked well:

"Cuts" by F. Paul Wilson-Who doesn't like a fun voodoo story now and then?

"each thing I show you is a piece of my death" by Gemma Files and Stephen J. Barringer- A nice creepy piece about a guy showing up in films.

"She Drives the Men to Crimes of Passion" by Genevieve Valentine-It seems that I have a thing going for stories with birds lately, and this one was super cool.

"The Onlookers" by Gary Braunbeck-Perceive and be perceived.

"Ardor" by Laird Barron-There was a dreamy feel to this Alaskan tale.

"Even the Pawn" by Joel Lane-I thought this story kicked ass. It was a sad one though, about sex slaves.

"The Tenderizer" by Stephen Graham Jones-This story was a tough one to read, but it touched me.

Overall this was a jam-packed collection, but it left me slightly disappointed. Perhaps it's because I expect a lot from any anthology edited by Ellen Datlow? Perhaps I wasn't quite in the right mood for most of these tales? I don't know for sure, I can only say how this collection made me feel. While the collection was no doubt full of well written tales, most of them just didn't work for me.

I received this eARC free from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. This is it.

Five Stars for The Cutting Room
By Charie D. La Marr
I love themed anthologies - and this is a theme I have never seen before. And I loved what I found inside. Instead of stories about actors and movie stars, these stories feature the behind the scenes people--directors, producers, and even writers. Several stories stood out in this book that was extremely well edited by the great Ellen Datlow. I loved Robert Sthearman's The Constantinople Archives, snarky and witty while at the same time written in a purely academic style. A.C. Wise's Final Girl Theory was another standout.as was Everything I Show You is a Piece of My Death by Gemma Files and Stephen J. Barringer. But the editor wisely saved the best for last. Illimitable Domain by Kim Newman is a gem. I highly recommend this book to lovers of quality literary short stories and lovers of the cinema. It is well worth it.

About the Author
Kate was born and raised in Sydney, Australia with her two parents and two brothers. She was always a dreamer even as a teen when she would dream of the moment, while in Maths class, her knight in shining armour would come and rescue her from the tedious learnings of algebra and Pythagoras’ theorem. It was at that moment, she realised that if she wanted her knight to come through the door, she’d need to dream him up. She’s been doing it ever since. In 2014, she migrated north to the Central Coast of NSW where she lives with her most treasured items: laptop, high heels and countless meerkat figurines. Fate, is the first novel written by Kate and the first in the Fallen from Grace series.

Predict Big Things for Kate Bonham!!!
By Louisa Gray - The Sassy Kiwi
Have you ever read A Touch of Crimson by Sylvia Day? Did you love this book? If so, you will also love Fate by Kate Bonham!

Its a modern day look at the battle between the blurred lines of good and evil, Archs and the fallen...Lucifer and Satunas (love that name!) As two different people....and plop right smack in the middle of it all...yup a sassy smart mouth, quick witted heroine!! You heard it right...she is awesome!

The story takes you on a journey of love and war, angel wings and heart strings, and the archangel himself...Gabriel.

You imagine Constantine battling demons and Gabriel, well being his normal self! Its keeps you interested in the plot through your reading journey, right to the very end!

Be aware all, it is the first book in the Fallen From Grace series...and I s&*t you not, you will hound Kate Bonham to HURRY UP AND FINISH THE SECOND BOOK!!!!!

Over all....I found it absolutely brilliant....not bad for someone who doesn't read alot of the paranormal genre!!!
