Thus, I wrote THE TERMINALS as a book that could be easily translated to film, much like Kingsman: The Secret Service, but without the excessive violence. I also included elements of The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent, and the like. Major action and a fast-moving plot. Enjoy.
About the Author
ROYCE SCOTT BUCKINGHAM is an American fantasy author with a degree in English from Whitman College and a Juris Doctor in Law from the University of Oregon. Buckingham's first foray into the young adult genre was Die Karte Der Welt, which spent more than eleven weeks on the German bestseller list in 2013. The Terminals is Buckingham's first young adult thriller for the U.S. Buckingham lives with his wife and their two sons in Bellingham, WA, where he works at the Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

Entertaining, but don't think about it too much

The book was an entertaining read, but there were some massive issues that I had with the book that became increasingly irritating near the end. The Terminals is about a group of college students who, after discovering they have a terminal brain tumor and about a year to live, agree to become part of a super secret special ops program that does good where the government can't. Cam, our protagonist, arrives on the island, and it's kinda clear from the outset that something is amiss when it's discovered that the program participants are given a dose of something that enhances their abilities. Add that to the fact that the program participants are treated as pretty expendable and that information comes in trickles, and you know that things are pretty much no where close to being on the up and up.
My issue with the book is that people die left and right because our protagonist is a credulous moron that would have let Hitler live. I'm not sure if this is something based on a character choice or if it reflects Buckingham's actual feelings, but the group gets in trouble time and again when Cam, the main character, refuses to allow very, very bad people to die. In addition to the fact that this goes against human nature in general, he refuses to learn from his mistakes.
Basically, the books is like a decent action movie. Watch and enjoy the explosions, just try not to think to hard about what's going on and you'll like it a lot more.
SPOILER ALERT
About the last third of the book is devoted to the group discovering that they're not really dying of a brain tumor, although they are probably dying of the enhancers they're being given to boost their speed and reflexes. During the course of this, Cam constantly avoids killing the people trying to kill him and his friends and generally yells at anyone who wants to do something, like, I dunno, reduce the number of people trying to murder them.
At one point, after a guard is shot in the hands and leg by one of the people he's running with, they discover the guard's femoral artery is hit. They drag the guard into the building and insist that a doctor, who is a part of the group using them as lab rats, patch him up. The doctor says the man needs a blood transfusion to live, and Cam has a member of his group give blood so that the guard can live. They are shocked, SHOCKED I tell you to discover that the doctor, who is okay with telling perfectly healthy people they're dying and sending them to their deaths, would end up killing the person donating the blood to save the guard. If you can't trust a murderous doctor with no morals, who can you trust?
After this, Cam STILL does not learn his lesson. Shortly thereafter, he has one of his friends shoot attacking guards in the feet and hips. Following that, he allows one of his captors and the person in charge of leading his group before they escaped, to live. But hey, what are the chances he'll go back to his evil ways, right?

He reflects on how was about to take Kristi Banks to the ultimate party house and soon afterward start on Western Washington University soccer team. Instead according to specialist Dr. Singh he has one year to live because of some freaking brain tumor. While his parents are devastated and his friends awkward; his BFF Mason reminds Cam that he may be dying, but he always was a doer, so do. A stranger offers Cam an exciting exit strategy as a hero, but starting with his immediate fake death; Cam accepts.
Not long after he “dies”, Cam meets the other nine teen teammates who also share with him the one year death sentence. As the original ten Terminal teens work dangerous missions around the globe, some die during the execution while others prematurely perish under questionable circumstances that Cam and the others still alive choose to ignore. That is until Siena, who faked her death as the lone survivor of the previous team, arrives to paint an ugly picture of their handler and his associates to Cam and company.
The Terminals is an exciting action-packed tweener-young teen thriller. Although the key cast is underdeveloped, the young audience will appreciate these Teen Titans (nod to DC comics) globetrotting escapades; stealthy expanded by those dwindling still alive investigating the organization that recruited them.

The Terminals is an action packed, pulse-pounding young adult thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until you reach the very end.
Nineteen year old Cam is told that he has an inoperable brain tumor and has a life expectancy of about a year left to live, when he is approached by a stranger to spend the last year of his life training to spy and undertake missions to save innocent people he jumps at the chance, wanting to know that he spent the time he has left doing something worthwhile.
When he arrives at base he meets the other nine teens on his team, all around the same age, all with the same brain tumor, but these nine are also taking a drug TS-9 which enhances their natural abilities, once training is over the missions begin and it's not long before Cam's teammates start dropping like flies, when a survivor from the previous year's team Siena who has been hiding in the forest all this time explains what happened to her and what's really going on with the program, will Cam find a way to escape before he finds himself dead just like his teammates?
The ending was left open ended which I don't mind if I know that there will be another book but so far I've seen nothing to suggest that there is going to be a sequel.
This was such a great book, I finished it in one sitting, it was very enjoyable.
