My Flame series, which was originally called a trilogy, has been split into two duologies since there are now four books and the third begins a separate story set two centuries later than the preceding ones, which doesn't depend on having read either of them. Readers who disagree with the controversial view of healthcare expressed in Stewards of the Flame, or who want more science fiction action, often like it better -- yet no one wants to begin with a book labeled Number 3. So now the Hidden Flame duology consists of Book One, Stewards of the Flame and Book Two, Promise of the Flame, while the Rising Flame duology consists of Book One, Defender of the Flame and Book Two, Herald of the Flame. Please note that unlike my earlier novels, these two duologies were never issued as Young Adult books and they are not appropriate for readers below high school age.
About the Author
Sylvia Engdahl is the author of ten science fiction novels. Six of them are Young Adult books that are also enjoyed by adults, all of which were originally published by Atheneum and have been republished, in both hardcover and paperback, by different publishers in the twenty-first century. The one for which she is best known, Enchantress from the Stars, was a Newbery Honor book, winner of the 1990 Phoenix Award of the Children’s Literature Association, and a finalist for the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year in the Rediscovery category. Her four newest novels, the Hidden Flame series and the Rising Flame series, are not YA books and are not appropriate for middle-school readers, but will be enjoyed by the many adult fans of her work.

Excellent sequel to Defender of the Flame

Those who enjoyed Defender of the Flame will also enjoy this novel, which picks up right where it left off. As with Engdahl's other novels, the power of the human mind, ethics and striving to live up to high ideals even in the face of adversity are major themes (much more so than in most other science fiction). I loved reading Sylvia Engdahl's books growing up in the '70's, which were aimed at young adults, and it is wonderful that she has written the four Flame novels for adults.

excellent. Sylvia Engdahl's books are torches that light a flame of hope that we may have a future beyond the clouded one on Earth. This book seems to be the conclusion and if so then a fitting one it is. I have read and loved these books and the world they are set in since a teenager in the 1970s. I hope though that the Elders have granted her the life extension treatment to age 200 so that we may read many more.

Satisfying Conclusion to a Great Series

As the human race begins developing powerful psi capabilities like telepathy, healing, and telekinesis, various factions of society and especially those with political power exhibit fear and denial through acts of repression and violence. One man in particular, a former military officer, must become a politcal dissident and hunted fugitive as he honors the vow he made to promote the power of mind and lead humanity into a new and amazing future.
This is excellent science fiction with a refreshingly optimistic vision of the future. While the author seemed to leave room for further sequels, this book provides a wonderful and emotionally-satisfying conclusion to the story that began with "Defender of the Flame." I recommend starting your "Flame" reading with "Stewards of the Flame" and enjoying all four books in order (Stewards > Promise > Defender > Herald), because they are that good, but you can also start with the last two books and go back to the first two later.
