My Grandfather's Coat, by Jim Aylesworth

A rollicking, rhyming, fun rendition of a favorite folksong about a many-times recycled coat -- by the award-winning, bestselling team of Jim Aylesworth and Barbara McClintock.

When my grandfather came to America
he made himself a handsome coat!
Then he wore it and he wore it and he wore it--
until it was all worn out!
So what did he do?

   He snipped and he clipped--
and he stitched and he sewed. . .
and out of the still-good cloth of his coat--
he made himself a smart jacket!

How many things can Grandfather make
out of that old frayed coat?

Jim Aylesworth's satisfying retelling and Barbara McClintock's heart-warming pictures celebrate the clever recycling of a beloved coat that lasts four generations -- until it becomes this story!

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—This new adaptation of the Yiddish folk song presented in Simms Taback's Joseph Had a Little Overcoat (Viking, 1999) and Phoebe Gilman's Something from Nothing (Scholastic, 1992) is a fresh rhythmic retelling with charming cartoon-style illustrations that deserves a place even in collections that own the other two. Aylesworth's story, told in the voice of the main character's granddaughter, recounts highlights of her grandfather's life: coming to America, becoming a tailor, and making himself "a handsome coat…that he wore on his wedding day!" The worn coat becomes "a smart jacket"; the shabby jacket, "a snazzy vest"; the frayed vest, "a stylish tie." In this version, the threadbare tie is transformed into a toy for a great grandson's kittens, then a cozy nest for a mouse and her babies. As in both older versions, this one features repetition and a rhyming refrain. McClintock's pen-and-ink detailed watercolor illustrations highlight four generations of family history. Following the title-page scene that shows ships streaming toward Ellis Island, then a photolike pose of grandfather as a boy on deck passing the Statue of Liberty, the story unfolds in two-to-three small vignettes per page, each accompanied by a snippet of text, with a full-page scene at each major juncture. The paintings highlight McClintock's special skill for aging grandpa. Her eye for detail is apparent in ever-changing clothing styles; in a sole coming loose from young grandpa's shoe; and the evolution of his sewing machines from treadle to modern motorized. This is a tale worth reading again and again.—Susan Scheps, formerly at Shaker Public Library, OH

An heirloom book
By Jason Kirkfield
I recently read two newly published Coming to America books. This one, My Grandfather's Coat by Jim Aylesworth, was the better of the two, and in fact one of the more satisfying picture books I have had the pleasure to read.

I love reading new picture books, but I also love when said books draw inspiration from the vast trove of children's literature. My Grandfather's Coat follows in the footsteps of Simms Taback's Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, with which it shares inspiration from the same Yiddish folksong.

This is a circle of life story in the spirit of Grandpa Green and like that Caldecott Honor winner, a touching tale of multi-generational love. As with any historical book worth its salt, this drives home the reality that our ancestors made do with less. They worked hard, played less, and created more. Illustrations keep pace with the story; an observant eye will notice many small details changing over time.

My Grandfather's Coat has almost everything you could want from a picture book with the sole exception of endpapers. They are plain, but at least they are the same navy as the coat/jacket/vest/tie. I cannot fault illustrator Barbara McClintock, especially when she was so industrious in other respects. The colophon, for example, is a smorgasbord of book-nerd details:

"The display type was set in Forum Titling. The text was set in Aged Book. Barbara used a Hunt #100 steel pen nib and dip pen, Higgins Waterproof Ink, and Winsor Newton Water Colours on Arches 90-pound cold press watercolor paper."

All in all, a wonderful picture book. I hope Scholastic promotes the heck out of it. The Jewish details are thoughtful but subtle. This book is appropriate for all audiences and an obvious from-the-grandparents gift for any newborn.

Yiddish Folksong Revitalized in Award Winning Picture Book
By Sandra
Some folktales and folk songs have traction. They are ripe for appearing in multiple formats. Such is the case of the well-known Yiddish folksong, Hob Ikn Mir a Mantl (I Had a Little Overcoat). Jim Aylesworth and Barbara McClintock’s latest picture book, My Grandfather’s Coat (2014), rivals the earlier versions- Joseph Had a Little Overcoat (1999) and Something From Nothing (1992).

My Grandfather’s Coat is set in rural 20th century Connecticut, a deviation from the folksong’s original Eastern European roots. This unique setting allows young readers to catch a glimpse of the immigrant experience in the American countryside. Thus, the story can be contrasted with the majority of the Jewish immigrant stories that focus on the more common urban American experience. Subtle references to the characters’ Jewish heritage are scattered among Barbara McClintock’s delightful illustrations. A Shabbat (Sabbath) dinner table and wedding scene are the most prominent. Moreover, the book mirrors a well-known trend among 19th-20th century Eastern European Jewish immigrants. Many started out in the garment industry and eventually became storeowners.

The repetitive verses along with the compatible illustrations provide warmth and charm to this intergenerational tale. Young readers will have no difficulty relating to the narrator who is looking back at her grandparent’s life. Stories that include references to multiple generations help children make vital connections to their family’s history. At home or in the classroom, the reading of this story will promote interest in one’s heritage and family background.

Exceptional and memorable picture books maintain their young audiences’ attention by utilizing free flowing words that are adeptly combined with engaging illustrations. As a balanced team, Jim and Barbara have found the “sweet spot” for the appropriate cadence. Short passages matched with simple drawings make it possible for readers and nonreaders to follow the timeline of the story and to appreciate the intended messages.

Intertwined within the main character’s experiences are important lessons that can be shared with young children. Being able to reuse and recycle usable objects models the importance of making the most out of one’s possessions. The story also demonstrates how material possessions can oftentimes be overvalued while intangible aspects of life such as family traditions are invaluable.

In exchange for an interview and honest review, I was sent a copy of My Grandfather’s Coat.

I actually received this book by winning it in a contest, although it is the type of book I would purchase to share with my class. I did so a few weeks ago as it coincided with our "Coming to America" lessons for social studies perfectly! The story is rich and vibrant with the coat being the "thread" (literally;) throughout it. My students have made this their favorite book choice from my personal library and have all checked it out now since I first presented it to them. It is a book you should read to your child and I highly recommend it for a classroom! Beautiful story. So glad I had the opportunity to read and to own it.
