Fix Up (Patch Up Series Book 2), by Stephanie Witter

Saying “I love you'' doesn’t erase the old scars and fears.

"I love you to insanity. I'm not even sure if it's a good thing.'' — Duke

Skye is trying to overcome what happened with Sean. Now that she’s slowly healing, both physically and mentally, she’s determined to do something she should have done sooner. She’s meeting twice a week with a new, very young therapist, Dr. Marshall. There, she’s able to talk freely, unwind, and question things. Most of the sessions she talks about herself and her hangups, along with her relationship with Duke, which is still on rocky ground.

"I want to taste his sweat. I want to hear his groans. I want to feel him inside of me.'' — Skye

But while Skye is slowly getting back on her feet, Duke feels like he's drowning. He’s afraid of pushing her too much, of initiating intimacy, and it’s weighing between them. Moreover, knowing that he's not the one she’s talking to anymore is making him feel things he never thought possible.

"It’s a matter of when I’ll stop fighting." — Duke

As days pass, Duke is showing over and over how vulnerable he truly is and how Skye has more power over him than she ever imagined. When Skye sees how they keep hurting each other, she’s determined to do everything in her power to make things right, no matter what the cost. But one thing is still sure; she can count on Duke whenever she needs him, even if they disagree and fight. When Duke loves, he loves with everything he’s made of, the good and the bad.

"Loving her is confusing, making me afraid of myself and what I can do ... because I can break us both." — Duke

HEA finally achieved
By Mujer
I was unsure what to rate this book at first as I had mixed feelings about it. I loved the first book Patch Up and the idea of Duke and Skye as a couple. While it had a lot of angst, that fit the circumstances of the plot. I went straight from that book to this one, and I think that was a mistake. I probably should've taken a breather before moving on to this sequel, which was also full of angst. While many of Skye's feelings and reactions were believable and realistic after such a years-long abusive relationship and traumatic abduction and near-rape by ex-boyfriend Sean in the last book, I found myself feeling impatient with her at times. ***SPOILERS*** She felt responsible for Sean's mother and for rescuing her from her abusive relationship with her husband, Sean's father. While I can understand her being able to empathize with the woman's pain, etc., I can't think that most people would take her on as a project and go out of their way like Skye did to help her out. While Skye's recovery was agonizingly slow, it was believable. But I was disgusted and upset with her for breaking up with Duke "for his own good." I thought it was unnecessary. The situation with the psychologist Dr. Marshall had some unrealistic elements. First, I find it doubtful that, from a team of available professionals on staff, the decision would've been made for the youngest, close to Skye's age, would've been the one selected to work with her. Second, as a professional, when Dr. Marshall started having feelings for Skye, the ethical and expected thing for him to do would've been for him to remove himself from working with her and recommending someone else. That should've been initiated by HIM as a professional. Instead, he kept working with her and gave her advice that clearly would pandered to HIS personal interest in a client, which was also unprofessional and unethical. Obviously, Skye should've come clean with Duke about Dr. Walker's age and interest in her (which was not reciprocated). She wasn't interested in him as a man, but was flattered by his interest in her. Perhaps that's not surprising, given Skye's background and lack of any normal, meaningful relationship before Duke. We see much more of Duke's issues in this sequel, and I felt such empathy for him. He REALLY loved Skye! He did overact to some of the things going on with Skye, but was spot on about Skye's wishy-washiness in regards to Sean. I just hated the way she kept hurting him. Some of Skye's pain she brought on herself (i.e., her heartbreak after SHE broke up with him). Duke was obviously a keeper. He should've gotten rid of his dead girlfriend's necklace sooner, but Skye should also have told him how she felt about him still wearing it instead of silently resenting its presence. I was very pleased Duke finally decided to fight for her, and I liked the epilogue where we saw into their future as a couple. All in all, I liked this book, but not as much as the first one. Looking forward to Kate and Derek's story. I'd also like to see a novel about Duke's college roommate Grayson at some point.

The Writing Is Still As Entertaining As Ever
By Mikky
My Rating: ✮✮✮½

This is a really good sequel. The writing is still as entertaining as ever and I can almost sense this sequel begging to be written. It wasn't a forced continuation. This story just HAD to be told.

Sky is as good as she can be after the finale in Book #1. I like how it showed her trying to deal with her problems because the truth is no one, after having gone through a traumatic events, wants to willingly rehash all those events out and how they made them feel to a psychiatrist (AKA a complete stranger.

Duke. I was reading through reviews for this book just to get a sense of where I stood in relation to all the other people how have read this book and I found this amazing quote that describes my feelings for Duke exactly from Debbie (her review here): "[...] I wished we'd heard from Duke [in the first book] . Well, here you do and I take it back. Its too painful, Duke's unravelling runs parallel to Skye's recovery. He knows what he is doing is destructive, to himself, to Skye and to their relationship but he cant stop himself."

Conclusion: This was a very nice ending to Sky & Duke's story.

My Favorite Quotes:

"Life is a b****, I should know this by now."

"It's not love that hurts, Kate. It's people."

"Loving me is not a synonym for saving me."

The perfect ending for Duke and Skye
By Michelle Tikal - Nose Stuck In A Book
After the agonizing events at the end of Patch Up I was elated to hear that Stephanie Witter was giving us a story dedicated to Skye and Duke, their relationship, and dealing with the aftermath of those events. Fix Up is a whole different kind of emotional from the first book but extremely emotional nonetheless.

Fix Up is the culmination of all of the effort and perseverance Skye and Duke showed in Patch Up in order to be together. Unfortunately with the past that each of these two broken people have it was not meant to be an easy road to travel. Skye still has a ton of healing to do both physically and emotionally. She still has a lot of work to do in order to change her perspective, to deal with some issues that if left unchecked will hang over her head and affect her forever, and to be able to truly move on from the horrible situation she was in, move forward, and not just survive, but really live, experience, and be happy. Even Duke has some healing left to do and on top of it all he now has to come to terms with what happened with Sean at the end of the previous story in order to be comfortable and content himself as well as give Skye the love, support, and reassurance that she needs. Beyond each individual hurdle there are still unresolved feelings, insecurities, and resentments from the past that the two will need to surmount together in order to move forward. The ups and downs and trials and tribulations in this story will tug at your heart strings and delight you and frustrate you all at once.

I found myself feeling like there was a bit too much drama and too many unnecessary complications in the relationship at first. Once I forced myself to remember and bear in mind all of the obstacles, pain, and tragedy that each has had to face in the past it is much easier to relate to and accept the fear, insecurity, and doubt on both ends that easily weasels its way into the relationship and causes all sorts of problems that for most would either not be an issue or would be easy to overcome.

I love how this relationship is incredibly realistic. Skye and Duke have problems, they have issues, they have baggage, they run away at the first sign of trouble, they have to consciously decide to keep persisting to make things work, and above all their love is not easy, but they take things as they come, slow and steady, one step at a time. Their story is far from a fairytale, but it is exceptionally fitting for two damaged souls fighting to live, love, and find happiness together.

The back and forth , the on again, off again, and the way that either Skye or Duke is constantly running and giving up on the relationship is a bit exhausting and a whole lot aggravating but in the end it is well worth the fight and well worth the ride. I am so glad to have been given this conclusion to Skye and Duke's story in Fix Up. It really was the perfect ending for these two memorable characters.
