Afterglow, by Larry Felder

It's a scientist's worst nightmare, the Law of Unintended Consequences, and it's caught up with physicist Kevin Herter. His breakthrough theory of Quantum Gravity has an unimaginable quirk - it allows thermonuclear bombs to detonate without producing radiation - and watching them explode has become the hottest spectator sport ever. The South Seas resort created by President Elliot Hanford is wildly popular. People book a year in advance to see the world's first recreational use of hydrogen bombs, and despite Kevin's revulsion at what was done with his work, Hanford knows the public is far too taken with the immense explosions to worry about them. But forces are converging on the young physicist, and the reality he has tried to avoid. And looming over it all is an even worse reality that Hanford has kept secret. What could be so shocking that it would require a spectacle on a megaton scale to distract the world's attention? Kevin Herter is about to find out. If he can live long enough to tell about it.

About the Author
Larry Felder used to fill the margins of his grammar-school notebooks with drawings of airplanes, dinosaurs and prophetically atomic bombs, which led to "Afterglow". A 1980 graduate of Montclair State College, where he received a BA in Fine Art and Political Science, he has become well known for his work in the field of Dinosaur and Prehistoric Wildlife restoration. His work has been featured in numerous books, magazines, national parks, television and on-line sites, and can be found in many museums and private collections. His 2000 book "In the Presence of Dinosaurs," co-authored with John Colagrande, was the only TIME/LIFE book ever to have received a Starred Review in "Publisher's Weekly." He is also an accomplished landscape and figure painter, and is currently working on a traveling exhibit for museums and science centers called "Bringing Dinosaurs to Life." He currently lives in Bridgewater, New Jersey. "Afterglow" is his first novel.

Intricate Plot Reminiscent of The Da Vinci Code
By Kim
Welcome to Club Afterglow, an American tropical resort where radiation-free nuclear bombs are spectacularly exploded in the sea for the entertainment of thousands of tourists every week. Although Club Afterglow has made him one of the most well-known scientists in the world, Kevin Herter, the physicist whose work made the bombs possible, finds the whole situation an abuse of pure science. The only saving grace in Kevin's eyes is that the bombs are far too large to weaponize. Still, he wants nothing more than to distance himself from the program. However, the White House is pressuring Kevin to head up Club Afterglow, ostensibly as a way to promote American interests. As Kevin gets sucked into the media frenzy surrounding the impending White House announcement of his involvement, he discovers there is more to Club Afterglow than fun in the sun - he finds a conspiracy deeper than he could have ever imagined, one that threatens everyone he knows and loves. The clock is rapidly running down to some conclusion that Kevin can't see, but he needs to figure it out fast or risk losing everything.

I found this book to be an enjoyable read, with numerous well-drawn characters and a many layered plot that kept me guessing. Kevin's somewhat unwilling journey from a waffling, clueless scientist who wanted to keep his head in the sand to one who could piece together all the threads of the conspiracies underlying Club Afterglow and make a stand was a nice little roller coaster of plot twists and character revelations.

Afterglow or how we almost learned to stop worrying and love the bomb - my recommendation: read it now.
By Charles Rizzo
Despite the complexity of plot and the book’s length (>500 pages in paperback), I found Afterglow to be a quick and eminently enjoyable read. At first, Mr. Felder introduces his extensive cast of characters (many befitting a capital C) and the “science” behind the most ambitious form of entertainment ever devised by man in a series of short, rapid-fire chapters. As the plot and the chapters thicken, it becomes clear that this new work of fiction by first time novelist Larry Felder may be hard to pin down by genre. The story mixes plausible science fiction, corporate and political greed and intrigue with their inevitable spooks both good and bad, fatally flawed politicians, a physicist’s loves lost and won amid a deadly competition between massive government bureaucracies (and its collateral human damage), a tropical island chain paradise’s race with the rising ocean, banned weapons testing in plain sight, a truly incendiary anticlimax, and an understated ending suitable to Greek tragedy. It is a science thriller, pure and simple.

The author is a well know painter who has infused his prose with the visual artist’s attention to detail. Showing a wordsmith’s ability to paint the scene for the reader, Mr. Felder was equally at home immersing the reader in leisurely tours through Princeton, NJ, a sci fi-physics-based entertainment event of unparalleled expanse and beauty, and even a horrific disaster.

Afterglow or how we almost learned to stop worrying and love the bomb - my recommendation: read it now.

An Intruging and Highly Original Novel.
By Lee Murphy
When I first learned of this book I didn't quite know what to expect and I think the intriguing cover image bears that out. This is also a deep read with a little over four hundred pages, so I did not approach lightly. I have to say I am very happy I did. This review will not contain any spoilers, but I have to say I found this novel highly original, written by a first-time author with the voice of someone who had been writing for years. His knowledge of nuclear physics and the science behind the story is tremendous. However, as with any story, especially one of this magnitude, it is the characters that make or break it. In this case the story is a success. All the characters are thoroughly fleshed-out. Some, whom you assume represent an obvious mentality of good or evil, surprised me without losing their credibility. As for the explosions depicted on the cover and around which the story unfolds, Mr. Felder's descriptions had me visualizing it and almost wishing it was something I could have been there to see myself. Overall, a really good book and worth the read. Here is an author with a fresh imagination and excellent writing skills. As much as people say it on these review forums, I really am looking forward to what this author puts out in the future.
