"School is a place of art rather than a place of business.  If you understand this fundamental reality then things can begin to move forward.  Unfortunately, most of our opportunist politicians have little understanding of art, or its necessary conditions, and most of our greedy business people would love to get a cut of all of the money our society spends on public education (with the recent controversy over MOOCs being a prime example of this).  Yet we have an opportunity now, which should not be passed up, to reflect upon the vocation of the school administrator.  For if the school is to be a place set apart from the bondage and dangers of practical life then the purpose of a school administrator surely is to be the agent who works on behalf of the school to bring this about.  Yet how many supposed "school administrators" not only fail in this task but actually "collaborate" (in the negative sense) with all of those in the outside world who wish to turn our schools into job training centers!"

About the Author
John C. Wilhelmsson is a professor of philosophy at San Jose State University. As a professor John is known for his thoughtful and independent interpretations and intuitive teaching style. Born and raised in San Jose, California John became interested in having a career in philosophy after reading "Fides et Ratio" (Faith and Reason) by Pope John Paul II. He made Edith Stein the focal point of his research because John Paul II mentioned her in this work. John was awarded his master's degree in 2007 and his thesis "The Philosophical Contributions of Edith Stein" was named best in his college. John is currently both a successful businessman and an instructor at San Jose State University.

A well written book about education

This book written by John Wilhelmsson is a book regarding essays about education. At least that is what I got out of it. It gives ones the perspective on MOOCs (massive online courses). Online courses over the years have seemed to evolve immensely in all states. It is changing the way teaching is taking place. As time passes everyone could if they wanted enroll in online classes. The possibilities are endless. Lot of university teachers will have a lot of competition in their hands soon and will need to figure out how to keep up with the pace of online classes. From this book I got that if teachers were to over a blending of the classes such as part online and part in class. There is a chance for survival. This will help attract students to want to find classes that are a blend. Students feel that they miss the interaction you get with a teacher and dont do as well. There is definitely a threat in my opinion after reading this book regarding reading and speaking your mind. When you bring massive online courses into education you have the ability to forget how to be persuasive in our writing. It seems the whole point of MOOCs is to save everyone money, but who is really saving the money. I dont know if a university would make it without professors. Professors use to be the key and bread and butter that would hold a university but if we step away from having a one on on relationship with our professors and connecting with them, how do we connect with others. Personally I wouldnt want to live in the world of online courses. I think that Wilhelmsson did a great job putting together this book. It was very informative and will be passing this book along to fellow teachers as well. He makes you sit back and think about the future and how you can choose to change it.

The art of teaching is a long essay/short book on how MOOCs (Massive Online Courses) affect negatively on the actual learning from frequenting proper and physical classes. Although this IS NOT a invective against online University courses in general, it IS on MOOCs.

MOOCs are in fact pre arranged courses, prefilled in computers and theres no possibility for the student to ask for clarification or (an most important thing!) argumenting something you thing is wrong; that is you have to take for granted that the infos and lessons you are taught are true. This is something you can normally do in a smaller online course, since there's a teacher availabe to explain if you don't understand something.

I'm not here to judge the content of the book, I'll just say that I agree with most of what it's written in it. And I think it would have been more incisive if only they'd skipped the whole initial part where the author give some anecdotes on why hes a teacher, how he became one ecc ecc.

Of course the author wanted to assure you he knows the subject from experience and I like he gave the teacher point of view and admire the fact that he says teaching is a "calling" and not a job, we could use more teachers with this kind of vision.

Anyway I liked/appreciated what he writes as introduction to the main theme, I wish he did it in a different and less verbose/redundant way.
