When humans began hunting them thousands of years ago, demons locked themselves away in their own dimension, leaving their half-demon spawn to wander the earth. Abandoned, alone, and outcast from all societies, half-demons formed their own small cities or learned to live, mutilated and hidden, from the humans who wanted them dead. After saving a stranger in a busy New York street, Cherifa reveals to the world her two biggest secrets: she’s a half-demon, and she can’t die. With humans, demons, and everything in-between wanting to harness her power, Cheri must go on the run with the eccentric person she saved. But her death has sparked waves of revolution in the half-demon community, and if she wants to stop an interdimensional war, she’ll have to go through Hell to do it.

Good, but missed some great opportunities.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
In fairness to the author, I don't normally read fantasy books of this type, so I will try my best to review this from an objective standpoint. I saw a Read for Review on Goodreads, found the book and read the sample. I quite liked it so I responded.
For the first third of the book I was considering a 4 star review, but as it progressed the lack of detail bothered me. Now that I've read the book I still can't quite picture the protagonist, Hell, or the city Sky. I also don't understand how some of the concepts work. For instance, demons are not what people would normally think of as demons. They can talk. They have cities. Yet the rules of how all of this works are not well laid out, so I found myself wondering what they can and can't do. There were descriptions of some of these things, but they were minimal, leaving a bit too much to the reader's imagination.
---------------------------------Mild Spoiler Alert!----------------------------------
A fallen angel features prominently in the book. The angel has no sex and thus the author alters the English language to include a neutral article to describe the angel. I think this was clever, but I have a feeling the grammar police will have a field day with it. Regarding grammar, there were some mistakes throughout the book. They did not bother me, because they seemed more like oversights than lack of command of the language. In fact, most of them were missing words. "She caught cab" instead of "She caught a cab." Again, this did not bother me, but I do think another editing pass through the book would help and of course, for those that are really bothered by it. . .beware.
Also, there was a torture scene. This is a hot button for me. I hate torture and found the scene really disturbing. This may have been the very moment that it dropped a star. It's the kind of thing that would mess a person up for life. Yet it is barely mentioned and even then it was mentioned only by others. If you have to provide the scene to show how horrible it was, then show how horrible the consequences were as well. Sounds like a lifetime of therapy to me.
Finally, at the end of the book the author mentions that she will never write a 'straight' main character because there aren't enough queer ones out there. To that I say, "Don't limit yourself." This book contained virtually no sex and only a bit of intimacy. And other than a brief conversation, mentioning that she was ok with having sex with another woman, there was nothing gay about the main character or the book. To me with just a few tweaks it could have been written so that the reader had no idea of the sexual preference of the main character. The angel had no sex but because she was initially introduced as a woman, I couldn't shake the thought that this sexless individual was actually female. Perhaps that was the queer part. I don't know. But I do know it didn't play a huge role in the book.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I rarely say this and in fact, this may be the first time, but this book could have been longer. Or more accurately, more efficient. Some of the dialogue was mediocre and some of the chapters lacked purpose. I think the space would have been better consumed with more 'color'. By color, I mean more description, more adjectives, more sense of place, more character development, just more detail in general. If I'm taken on a journey to Hell and I don't see the stereotypical damned slaving in a pit of fire, that is awesome but then I want to know why.
The main character was well described internally, but didn't seem to change much even with the resolution of her crisis. The changes were almost exclusively described by those around her, which is fine, but it seems that we should see more of her own thoughts and actions that describe this change.
Also, the ending felt abrupt.
Ultimately I think there were some missed opportunities in providing the reader with a sense of being there. How does a portal to Hell FEEL to cross through?
So far, I've focused on the negatives, but there was some good stuff in the book as well. The overriding concept was pretty cool. It was easy to sympathize with the main character. There were plenty of strange creatures and a bit of interesting magic. All of this was the kind of thing I think fantasy lovers would find interesting. The author really shakes up some old concepts. It did keep me reading. Trust me, if it were bad, I would have stopped reading it. I think most fantasy lovers would give the book a 3.5 star rating.

Have you ever read and book and realized that you didn’t much care for it? Not because it was a bad book per say, but because it was just not your cup of tea.
If I were to sum up my thoughts on “Death Defiant” that would be it.
I really did try to like this book, I really, truly did. However, there were some things that continually killed it for me. Before I go any further into my thoughts, I will give you a highlight of the premise.
Cherifa is living her life like a normal person. She has a boyfriend, works, does her thing—until one day seeing a woman nearly getting killed by a car, her instincts kick in and Cheri pushes the lady out of the way.
This event was the catalyst for an enormous game of cat and mouse. You see, Cheri has been in hiding as she is a half-demon humanoid.
Long ago the demons and angels alike fled places occupied by man in order to dwell in cities of their own creation. The demons made their home Hell and created their own geopolitical nation ruled by Lady Hala. The problem that Cheri encounters is that her inability to die, proves to be exactly what many of these entities need in order to find the reprise they so desire.
After the accident that exposed her true nature, Cheri finds herself being tailed by Bell, an eccentric personage with an affinity for discovery. Although, in my eyes she seemed more nosy and annoying than curious. However, Bell is hiding a secret of her own.
Alright, that’s all I’m going to say in this realm. Now, onto my thoughts.
I find that when telling a tale of this sort, information is fundamental.
When said information lacks, it’s sort of like going to the ATM, wanting to withdraw $60.00 but only getting $40.00. It’s that immediate thought of, “What the heck? Something is missing!” The proceeding thought, would be to go into the bank and ask for the rest of your money. Only, with a book, you can’t do that. You just have to sit there and suck up the missing 20 spot.
Trust me, I’m not on a tangent. This is important.
Throughout “Death Defiant” we are given chunks of pivotal information with no basis on which to go. There were many instances in which I thought that this book might have been translated from another language, and something was lost in translation, because much of the time I found myself wondering “Wait, how does this apply and where did this come from?“
I suppose that for people that prefer action along to push the story along this would be perfectly acceptable. However, for a person such as myself that yearns for the action and the substance, “Death Defiant” just didn’t hit that mark.
Some books are meant to be fast read. Heck, I’ve written some myself. But some books … some books …? Let’s just say that with some stories, taking a chill pill is imperative.
“Death Defiant” is the perfect example of a story that should have slowed its roll, so to speak. I think that perhaps, in slowing the pace of that narrative just a smidge in order to embellish a bit more on the potentially elaborate plot would have helped in leaps and bounds.
I would’ve loved to know more about the geopolitics, about why some nephilim named themselves after older demons, and so much more.
That's just weird.
Alright, I did mention before that for a time I thought this book was translated from another language. Here is one of the predominant reasons why:
Grammar!
Apart from the fact that this book suffered from the typical Grammar/Syntax No-nos—misplaced modifiers, under and overuse of commas, run on sentences and missing words—there was also a repetitive issue that began to irk the living daylights out of me.
Why were the word “she, her, she’d” and things of that nature being replaced with these “z” words? At first glance, I was under the impression that perhaps it was a translation issue. Yet, upon further research I became aware that the author is American, therefore there isn’t any real reason for it.
I was just highly confused.
Then I thought that perhaps it was a conversion problem. Either way, it was very bewildering and annoying.
Suffice it to say that the book required better editing.
Cheri, the main character was well developed. I’ll give credit for that. However, some of the supporting characters were very one dimensional. I think it has something to do with too many characters being presented in one story. When I say “too many”, I really mean it. It got to the point where I had to start jotting down names and titles in order to keep up. I do get that the author was trying to show the reader the full gambit of otherworldly beings, but the propensity to shoot the reader short on information made this already convoluted cast of personas that much harder to follow.
Summary.
To sum things us, “Death Defiant” isn’t by any means the worst book I’ve ever read. But, I do believe that it lacked a certain sheen that would keep many a reader invested and attuned to the overall story. I am truly a fan of Paranormal, yet I always walk off with a frown when what I think should be a grand story lets me down.
Survey Says: 3 Stars.

Overall Death Defiant is a good fantasy read with an engaging plot and interesting characters
By Shari Sakurai
*I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review*
I had mixed feelings about this novel as I reached its end. Some things I enjoyed and others I was not so keen on.
The concept and characters I really liked. The author has clearly taken time to develop her ideas and characters. Cherifa, the protagonist, is a half-demon who cannot die. By saving the life of a stranger Cherifa places herself in the middle of a war where all sides wish to use her to their advantage. Not knowing who to trust Cherifa must make decisions that not only affect her but possibly the outcome of the war.
The characterisation is excellent and as the novel progresses you see Cherifa and the supporting cast growing and developing further. I really enjoyed the beginning of the relationship between Cherifa and Belkor. It happened so naturally and wasn’t rushed at all so you can really appreciate the little moments between them and recognise them for what they are even before they do!
However, I did feel that perhaps there could have been some further description of the dimensions in some places as I was left trying to fill in a few more blanks than I would have liked too. I also did feel that the pace was hurried and that a little more time could have been taken to develop the story-line in places.
Overall Death Defiant is a good fantasy read with an engaging plot and interesting characters, but there are some things that I felt could made it even more enjoyable for me. This is probably more for readers who prefer a faster pace, but I would definitely like to read more of Cherifa’s story in the future.
