"The Gray Man" at the very top of his game
By Nick Ciubotariu
I picked up "The Gray Man" 3 years ago on a whim. I read the whole thing in one day without being able to put it down. I consider Court Gentry the perfect character of this genre, a more realistic and much faster-paced version of Jason Bourne, and a younger, somewhat more menacing, and in some ways, more cerebral version of Gabriel Allon. Gentry is everything you would expect from the world's foremost assassin - highly trained, with a heart of a lion and the ability to survive in just about any environment and under any conditions. Court Gentry is no James Bond, but the reader is left with the unmistakable impression that Gentry could waste Bond and ten others like him before they'd even have the chance to unbutton their fancy suits and order a cocktail.

In Dead Eye (the 4th installment of "The Gray Man" series), Court Gentry is on the run, and the CIA, the Russian mob, and just about every law enforcement agency on the planet wants him dead. The CIA engages a private corporation, Townsend Government Services, to send hunter-killer teams to take out the Gray Man once and for all. Russell Whitlock, code-name Dead Eye is part of one of the teams sent out to terminate Gentry. But suddenly, Dead Eye saves gentry from almost certain death, in a show of trust. Is he a friend or foe? Is there a bigger game at play, with higher stakes and geopolitical implications? This is only the beginning of a great story, with head-snapping twists and surprises right up to the very end.

After reading the first 3 books, and coming off the adrenaline high provided by "Ballistic", I knew the next book would have to be spectacular. It absolutely is. Mark Greaney delivers in a big way with "Dead Eye". The intensity of the action and the pace hits hard and fast from the beginning, and continues throughout the book. The first seven chapters by themselves are enough to replace a pot of coffee and several Red Bullls :). Do not plan to read this book at night. I know a lot of reviews start this way - this particular one should be heeded wisely. The action does not stop, it just accelerates at full throttle and hits you right in the chest like a smoldering bullet with a potent mix of fury and adrenaline until the final page.

One of my favorite things about "Dead Eye" was the continued introduction of new characters. Most authors recycle heavily, but this is not the case with "The Gray Man" series. Indeed, friends and relatives have commented on how easy it is to read the books out of order, due to the fact that the author has managed to create a phenomenal and very consistent main character, with an ever expanding supporting cast of friends and enemies. In Dead Eye, for instance, we are introduced to a new hunter-killer squad contracted by the CIA to terminate Court, as well as the Mossad, led by a determined agent who won't be deterred by the CIA's agenda. This is really the magic of the Gray Man series - there is very little recycled material, and every book stands on it's own.

With Dead Eye, the character, the author hit an absolute bulls-eye. A mirror image of Gentry, in many ways, Russell Whitlock takes the action right to Court Gentry, along with some old foes (or maybe friends?), as well as some new ones. You want to hate him very quickly, and you do, but he doesn't keep you from truly enjoying the book, rather, he adds to the flavor as one of the main antagonists. Strangely enough, as I finished the book, my feelings regarding Russell Whitlock (Dead Eye) change a bit, and I was left in a strange state of melancholic suspense about the character.

I have read enough books to be able to gauge when authors really put "research muscle" behind their books, and when they just kind of dial it in. Something I truly enjoy about Mark Greaney's books is their level of authenticity. Whether it is weapons, tactics, locale, lingo, the author goes to painstaking lengths to ensure the readers get as close to the "real" action as possible. Indeed, what really attracted me to "The Gray Man" series was the lean, direct and razor-sharp writing style of the author - there is no unnecessary "fluff" in his prose: every word has a purpose, nothing is ever wasted. High speed, low drag - just like Court Gentry himself.

The only bad part about this book is the fact that it ended. If I could give it a rating higher than 5 stars, I would. Flat-out my favorite book of the year, and now one of my top 5 all-time.

The Gray Man and Israel's Mossad? You bet your life!
By J. Lesley
Once again a Mark Greaney novel kept my attention glued to the pages. It has been a long time since the last Court Gentry book, but this made up for all that time I spent waiting. I would really like to know if the surveillance techniques used in this novel are real or inventions by the author because they were disquieting and yet fascinating at the same time. According to things I'm reading and hearing in news stories it's possible some of us have probably already come under this kind of scrutiny in completely innocent situations. In this novel real time, eye-in-the-sky, low-level spying results in having Court's life on the line because of the target on his back. A private, off the books agency used by the CIA has committed their resources to finding Court and eliminating him. How better to do that than to keep a watch on a target they know Court will try to take out? Working for this private agency is someone who has the same set of skills as Court and that person is guiding the agents from Townsend Government Services with unerring accuracy. It's almost as if he's inside Gentry's mind. But the real target takes a while to be revealed and it is in the best interests of intelligence agencies of many nations to become involved in trying to prevent the assassination of a political leader. Dead Eye says he and Gentry are completely alike and they should team up and work together. Then the twists in the plot begin.

Court Gentry is one of my favorite fictional characters and I was very glad to see him take on even more humanizing characteristics in this novel. I almost felt that I needed to pat him on the back and tell him everything would be okay, except it wasn't really going to be okay. When all is said and done Court is a loner, but in this novel he has to work with other operatives including those from Israel's Mossad. This story is action packed from start to finish and I continued to find myself off balance when trying to figure out the character of Dead Eye. Greaney did a really good job of revealing that character's thoughts and motives over time to keep the suspense going. So there is suspense, and action scenes that had my heart pounding, and unusual gadgetry, and impressive surveillance techniques, and the mindset of people who live their lives on an edge of danger I only want to read about. Do these kinds of things happen in real life? Well, I don't know, but it certainly makes for an exciting reading experience. Now I'm left to hope that there won't be such a long gap between this and the next novel in this fascinating series. I'm pretty stingy with my 5 star ratings for novels, but this one earned that designation from me. Wow, what a ride!

I received an advance copy of this novel for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.

And so lives the Gray Man
By Smooth
The story keeps going and gets better with every installment..which is not that common. Most of the time a new development in a series by many writers these days gets dull or sidetracked or formulaic and predictable. It's the opposite with the Gray Man.I think Mark worked out Court's entire plot first then split it into four books which is why it only gets better.
In any event, however the plot had been structured, the Gray Man series is one of just very few masterfully crafted reads today.
Keep them coming, Mark!

John Bloom and the Victory Garden, by Leigh Shearin

John Bloom and the Victory Garden is the rollicking tale of 3 boys at the dawn of America's involvement in WWII. John Bloom, and his best friends Joe and Chewie live, play, and get into adventures in 1940's era Appleside, NJ. Because children are generally joyful and tend to put more importance on the goings-on of their own worlds than those of grown-ups, the events of the war are woven into the boy's daily lives. Along the way, a bitter and cynical old man is drawn into their hijinks, and contributes his own joy to the lives of these 3.

Chapter One invites the reader to join John and his friends in Appleside, NJ on the afternoon of December 6th, 1941. Through newspaper headlines and radio bulletins, the boys learn about the incredible events of the war- beginning with the attack on Hawaii by the Empire of Japan. As the story moves along, John and his friends learn that everyone- not just soldiers- can make a difference. They learn that commitment leads to ultimate success and that taking a seemingly insurmountable task one step at a time will make that task simple. John, Joe and Chewie learn about where their food comes from, and how important good food is to the Allies overseas.

John Bloom and the Victory Garden is not just a story of Homefront USA during WWII. Its about faith, endurance and sturdy values that transcend time and cultural differences. It's about accepting tough times, struggle and adversity and overcoming them anyway. It's about seeing the humor in life, and helping others to see the humor too.

But mostly, they just have a gut-busting great time!

John Bloom and the Victory Garden
By Amazon Customer
Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

BRIEF RECAP:
The story centers around three boys (John, Joe, and Chewie), all age ten, who are friends and live in the same small farming town community of Appleside, New Jersey. Up until December 7, 1941, the boys’ life consists of mischievous neighborhood pranks, and basically just being rambunctious ten year old boys. However, their mindsets, and life as they know it, suddenly change when they receive news of Japan bombing Pearl Harbor. Feeling patriotic and protective of America, the boys consider joining President Roosevelt’s efforts in supporting the cause against the enemy invasion. The boys decide to form a club called the ABC Club—the Appleside Boys Club. Although not initially certain what their efforts will entail with the club, they make an attempt at being good Samaritans around the community; only their efforts as good Samaritans are challenged by the likes of their grumpy ninety year old neighbor Mr. Hutchins. Eventually, Mr. Hutchins and John form a special bond and mutual respect for one another despite their age difference.

PROS:
The story took me back in time to the days when my friends and I were young, rambunctious, and looking for ways to satisfy our mischievous appetites for adventure around the neighborhood. And as much as I cringed at the thought of these boys possessing a “rabbit skull” as a souvenir, I vaguely remember the thought that I too possessed a rabbit’s foot when I was younger; for what purpose besides “luck” I don’t recall. Anyway, it was a feel good story about three young friends and their way of contributing to the wartime effort in their own special way, all the while staying true to themselves and being just simply…boys. It is also a story about an unlikely bond formed between a young boy and an old man during a time when the nation’s security was compromised by war.

The illustration map of Appleside, New Jersey shown in the beginning of the book was also a plus as it gave me a perspective of the small town and where the boys lived in relation to one another and their neighbors.

I also liked at the end of the read, the author shared recipes of dishes that were mentioned and woven throughout the story. The recipes included were: a Shepherd’s Pie, Egg Custard, Apple Crumble, a Lemon Pound Cake, and Buttered Noodles.

CONS:
There were several instances where certain groups were mentioned that I felt were unnecessary to the story and could easily have been left out; such as the many references to Hitler and The Hitler Youth (also Freemasons and Eastern Star Ladies were referenced). Although I understand the historical aspect of it, I felt the repeated mentions did not adequately lend itself to the story at hand. What I also found a bit confusing was John’s loathe of Hitler and everything he stood for, yet he seemed to admire and want to emulate The Hitler Youth, so much so that that is where he got the idea to create a boys club. My apologies if that was not the author's intention, but that is how I interpreted it.

Also, the “victory garden” aspect of the story was not developed enough in my opinion. I am guessing that based on how the book ended there will be more reference to the victory garden in book two?

***

Overall I enjoyed the read and would recommend it to middle grade students; specifically geared towards young males.

Powerful WWII Story for Middle-graders - History, Food, and Coming of Age
By Cat Michaels
Title: John Bloom and the Garden of Victory | Author: Leigh Shearin | Publication Date: October 27, 2014 | Publisher: Independent | Pages: 195 | Recommended Grades: 3-8

Author Leigh Shearin's "John Bloom and the Victory Garden," the first of her "John Bloom Series," is a sure-fire win for readers in grades 3-8, history buffs, and foodies. The author stirs these incongruent ingredients into a powerful tale that comes together like a perfect three-course meal, and it leaves the reader eager for more.

CHARACTERS, SETTING
The story is a time capsule of life in a small, northeastern U.S. town on the eve of Pearl Harbor and its aftermath during the winter 1942 as seen through the eyes of three fourth-grade boys.

Shearin is inventive in her character descriptions. For example, protagonist John Bloom wants a shiny, blue-and-white Schwinn DX bike for Christmas and can reach his front porch from the sidewalk in just five jumps--unless his shoelace comes untied. He and friend Charles Anderson Slovinsky (Chewie) share a secret knock when visiting each other's home: three raps on the front door signals an urgent, parent-free visit. The third chum, Joe Riccio, comes from an Italian immigrant family, and they face possible internment due to Mussolini's part in the war.

"John Bloom" also introduces readers to a host of secondary characters who add richness and dimension to the story: the town Scrooge with a secret sweet tooth and a hoard of seed packets, a kindly farmer, a wise doctor, and more.

John's hometown of Appleside, NJ, is another pivotal character in a very real sense. Its rural backdrop underscores how the boys and townsfolk overcome adversity with optimism, humor, and resilience. An Appleside street map by artist Katie Shearin (an author/illustrator dynasty in the making) prefaces the book and provides a strong visual image of the town readers will inhabit alongside John Bloom and his friends.

NARRATIVE, PLOT
The plot charts the transformation of John and his playmates. Before the war, their world revolves around such activities as trading a prized rabbit skull for a freeze-dried earthworm. After December 7, they create the American Boys' Club (the ABCs) and dedicate their time to helping Appleside support the war efforts.

Shearin serves up the right mix of energetic, kid-centric dialogue with descriptive narrative, both of which focus on the ABCs and their 1940s coming-of-age era. Readers are immersed in period details that bring history to life. Leafing through photographs in "Life" magazine. Shopping at the Five and Ten. Listening to radio broadcasts of President Roosevelt or Prime Minister Churchill deliver stirring wartime messages. Waiting for letters from loved ones fighting overseas. (Imagine that: no email or Skype!)

Yet boys will be boys, and Shearin adds plenty of mischievous plot elements, like pranking the neighbors and devising secret talisman.

I dare anyone to read John Bloom and not develop a food craving. The author injects mouthwatering bites from her culinary background that are rarely encountered in middle-grade books:

"[John] burst through the kitchen door and was greeted by a wave of warm, steamy air that was scented with onions and apples, bread, and some kind of meat. His mother stood with her back to him, her left arm down on the work surface, her right elbow up in the air, doing battle with a bowl of something on the counter. There was a bowl of pickled beets and a plate of bread on the kitchen table in the center of the room, waiting to be moved to the dining room. Best of all though, was a round platter piled high with fat, golden brown sausages that glistened with fat still bubbling on the surface. They were resting gloriously on a bed of steaming sauerkraut laced with thinly sliced, caramel-colored onions."

Several recipes for meals described in the book are printed at the end of the story, so children can actually make food that the ABCs ate.

On occasion, Shearin uses accented dialogue with some characters. While she is adept at doing so, I find this literary device distracting, so I'm glad she keeps it to a minimum. There is also a chapter that switches from John's third-person voice to that of an adult character's perspective. The change is effective, but it could confuse some younger readers.

RECOMMENDATION
"John Bloom and the Victory Garden - Part 1" is a trifecta of history, food, and boyhood. I highly recommend this story for children (especially boys) in grades 3-8. They'll hunger for Part II of this series, "Digging In," and be impatient for its debut in Fall 2015.

A trip down memory lane - but cut too abruptly
By Pam B
John Bloom and the Victory Garden is the story of John Bloom and his friends during World War II. The book is like a time capsule of sorts and gives us a glimpse of life back in the 1940s. As I read through the book, my mind forms wonderful images of friendship, family and food shared during those times. I am not very familiar with most American food being mentioned here (I am from the Philippines) but they all sound good and my mouth waters at the mention of dessert.

The story has a pretty slow pace, like recounting childhood stories to grandchildren, but it is quite enjoyable. There are, of course, fast-paced portions where John and his two other friends, Joe and Chewie, share great and slightly mischievous adventures. I always think that boys their age can be pretty rowdy and naughty but probably also because of the war, I love how the three decided to do good deeds around the neighborhood. I especially liked John's attitude of trying to stand up for what he believes in even if his two other friends disagree with what he has to say.

The book would have been perfect if not for the ending. I felt like it was cut short and that the story did not really focus on the Victory Garden (or maybe it did, I just didn't catch it). I kept waiting for that part and felt like I was continuously on the climax of the story at about three-quarters through the book (according to Kindle) but poof! the story ended right then and there.

It was still an enjoyable read for me though. I would recommend it not just to boys but even to girls. It teaches history, food and even agriculture (I envy that part where they grow their own food).

Review
"A futuristic ride that has many parallels in today's society. This is a 'thinking man's' science fiction book - the type we need more of today!"
--The Feathered Quill

"These novels [The Rising Flame series] are not so much genre 'Romance' or even just 'Science Fiction' as they are Literature.  These are novels about life."  --Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Alien Romances: Reviews 14

From the Author
My Flame series, which was originally called a trilogy, has been split into two duologies since there are now four books and the third begins a separate story set two centuries later than the preceding ones, which doesn't depend on having read either of them. Readers who disagree with the controversial view of healthcare expressed in Stewards of the Flame, or who want more science fiction action, often like it better -- yet no one wants to begin with a book labeled Number 3. So now the Hidden Flame duology consists of Book One, Stewards of the Flame and Book Two, Promise of the Flame, while the Rising Flame duology consists of Book One, Defender of the Flame and Book Two, Herald of the Flame. Please note that unlike my earlier novels, these two duologies were never issued as Young Adult books and they are not appropriate for readers below high school age.

About the Author
Sylvia Engdahl is the author of ten science fiction novels. Six of them are Young Adult books that are also enjoyed by adults, all of which were originally published by Atheneum and have been republished, in both hardcover and paperback, by different publishers in the twenty-first century. The one for which she is best known, Enchantress from the Stars, was a Newbery Honor book, winner of the 1990 Phoenix Award of the Children’s Literature Association, and a finalist for the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year in the Rediscovery category. Her four newest novels, the Hidden Flame series and the Rising Flame series, are not YA books and are not appropriate for middle-school readers, but will be enjoyed by the many adult fans of her work.

Excellent sequel to Defender of the Flame
By Amazon Customer
Those who enjoyed Defender of the Flame will also enjoy this novel, which picks up right where it left off. As with Engdahl's other novels, the power of the human mind, ethics and striving to live up to high ideals even in the face of adversity are major themes (much more so than in most other science fiction). I loved reading Sylvia Engdahl's books growing up in the '70's, which were aimed at young adults, and it is wonderful that she has written the four Flame novels for adults.

By Laurie Pollack
excellent. Sylvia Engdahl's books are torches that light a flame of hope that we may have a future beyond the clouded one on Earth. This book seems to be the conclusion and if so then a fitting one it is. I have read and loved these books and the world they are set in since a teenager in the 1970s. I hope though that the Elders have granted her the life extension treatment to age 200 so that we may read many more.

Satisfying Conclusion to a Great Series
By RW Haven
As the human race begins developing powerful psi capabilities like telepathy, healing, and telekinesis, various factions of society and especially those with political power exhibit fear and denial through acts of repression and violence. One man in particular, a former military officer, must become a politcal dissident and hunted fugitive as he honors the vow he made to promote the power of mind and lead humanity into a new and amazing future.

This is excellent science fiction with a refreshingly optimistic vision of the future. While the author seemed to leave room for further sequels, this book provides a wonderful and emotionally-satisfying conclusion to the story that began with "Defender of the Flame." I recommend starting your "Flame" reading with "Stewards of the Flame" and enjoying all four books in order (Stewards > Promise > Defender > Herald), because they are that good, but you can also start with the last two books and go back to the first two later.

Anneka is totally focused on her career—through a powerful combination of talent and hard work, she has worked her way up from the bottom to the top of her job as a professional makeup artist. But when she turns up to one particularly prestigious shoot, and meets the photographer—sexy and confident Jack—Anneka’s life is about to be turned on its head. Jack seems distant and uninterested in her at the shoot, but afterwards, in the comfort of his fashionable house and over a glass of red wine, his true passion shows through. Jack wants to help Anneka explore a new, sexy side of her personality. He sweeps her off her feet in a whirlwind of eroticism. But can they balance business and pleasure, when they have to work together for the next three months? Jack is a man that does not take no for an answer, and once he is determined to have Anneka, no is not quite the answer she wants to give.

This series is a contemporary romance featuring searing and graphic depictions of romantic activity.
