an amazing ending to the series
By Jonel
This novel was much more action packed than its predecessors. Battles are waged, entire ways of life are defended, yet Pohler tactfully avoids the violence in this tale. I found myself caught up in the plight of the characters, trying to help them along, and keep them on the winning side, even when it seemed impossible. Pohler also kept me on my toes, guessing and racing forward to see what happens next. More than once I found myself exclaiming, I soooo did not see this coming. At the same time, Pohler stays true to the Greek myths while making them all her own. She also adds an extra emotional component to this tale. The emotional traumas of the past come forward and the healing begins. I appreciate how Pohler depicts this as an honest and ongoing effort. It makes this novel real & human yet sublimely god(dess) driven.

Although no new characters are introduced in this novel, the personalities of the characters continue to evolve based on their current circumstances. Even the oldest immortals adapt to their current circumstances. The contrast between the mortal and immortal personalities was both comical and enlightening. Pohler highlights not only the godly viewpoint, but also the disparity that Therese had to cross. The similarities between the two groups also become much more apparent in this instalment. Their hopes and fears collide into a single world.

As a whole, this story was informative, enlightening, and a pleasure to read. I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed. It’s a story that parents and teens alike will love.

The perfect ending!
By Jennifer Young
Eva has done a wonderful job with the ending of the Gatekeeper's Saga. As always, there is adventure, romance and of course, greek gods.

Therese and Than are patiently or impatiently awaiting the birth of their twins. And are faced with a dilemma of having two mortal children from two immortal parents.

Hip, Than's brother is trying to find away to be with his mortal love, Jen.

In comes all the Greek Gods and trouble is brewing once again. Its a power struggle at its finest.

Can the Gods keep it together long enough for the twins to be born or will everything fall to pieces?

The Gatekeeper's Saga is great and should be read not only by Teens but anyone else looking for a clean romantic story.

pretty good
By Nicole
I really liked this book. The only part I was disappointed with was the ending. It felt a little rushed and I really hated the fact that the main characters had to give up so much just to be with one another. I really hoped for a happier ending. Otherwise the book was awesome just like the ones that came before it.

Spark: A Novel, by John Twelve Hawks

THE MOST DANGEROUS ASSASSIN IS THE ONE WHO BELIEVES HE IS ALREADY DEAD.

A razor-sharp, high-tech, wildly imaginative new novel from internationally bestselling author John Twelve Hawks, Spark features a narrator unlike any in recent fiction—a man whose view of life and death is different from anything you’ve ever imagined.

Jacob Underwood is a contract employee of the Special Services Section, a small shadow department buried within the multinational corporation DBG, headquartered in New York City. Jacob is not a businessman . . . he is a hired assassin . . . and his job is to neutralize problems deemed unacceptable by the corporation. But Jacob is not like other employees, nor is he like other people. After a catastrophic motorcycle accident leaves him with Cotard’s syndrome—an actual condition that causes those afflicted to believe they are dead—Jacob perceives himself as nothing but a “Shell,” with no emotions and no tether to the concept of right and wrong.
Emily Buchanan is a bright  young second-year associate for DBG, and she has disappeared without a trace. Suspecting that Emily has stolen either vast sums of money or valuable information from the company, Ms. Holquist, Jacob’s handler at DBG, assigns him the task of tracking down the young woman and neutralizing her. Jacob’s condition allows him to carry out assignments with ruthless, logical precision, devoid of guilt, fear, or dishonor. But as his new assignment draws him inside a labyrinthine network of dark dealings, Jacob finds himself up against something he is completely incapable of understanding.
Shifting with riveting precision from New York to London, Paris to New Delhi, Spark is a thriller that delves into the surveillance state we prognosticate  today . . . and will live in tomorrow. In the hands of master storyteller John Twelve Hawks, a unique character’s startling transformation comes to life, making Spark a thriller that resonates and satisfies on many levels.

Review
“Spark is an even better introduction to the abundant dystopian talents of John Twelve Hawks than The Traveler was… exhilarated… breathless action …[The] protagonist lives in an ominous, technology-dominated world where machines aid or spy on all aspects of life. Sometimes, they can do both, and the few free souls left in society fear that a takeover by artificial intelligence isn’t far away…Mr. Twelve Hawks sets up the battles in Spark as more than simple combat. His appeal lies in his pairing of one system of belief against another and letting them duke it out.”
--Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"In Spark, by John Twelve Hawks, memory becomes a twisty beast to get rid of, especially if it is the last part of you that is really human...a fantastic blend of action and deeper questions about what it means to be human."
--The Washington Post

“What sets Spark apart is John Twelve Hawks’s expert characterization of Jacob Underwood, a first-person narrator whose view of the world is so unexpected and strange that we can’t take our eyes off him. This is an adrenaline-charged thriller–endlessly inventive–that winds through a landscape of cutting-edge technology with great assurance and skill.”
—LINCOLN CHILD, New York Times bestselling author of The Third Gate and coauthor (with Douglas Preston) of White Fire

"Spark is a marvel.  An utterly gripping, unbelievably imaginative tale with all the heart, drive, and humanity that it's hero, Jacob Underwood, a contract assassin, lacks.  Underwood is an amazing creation--a man afflicted with Cotard's Syndrome, who believes himself to be spiritually and emotionally dead.  Yet as he travels the world, seeking his most important target, he discovers that somewhere inside of him, a spark still fires.  At once a heart pounding thriller, a bitter indictment of our growing surveillance state, and a life affirming story of the indomitability of the human heart, Spark is the most satisfying book you will read this year!"
--CHRISTOPHER REICH, New York Times bestselling author of RULES OF DECEPTION and INVASION OF PRIVACY

"The author of the Fourth Realm trilogy returns with a thriller about a contract killer who, following a brain injury, suffers from Cotard’s syndrome, a (genuine) form of mental illness in which the afflicted person believes he or she is dead. Jacob’s injury has totally changed his life; he needs a highly structured, uncluttered environment, and he needs to learn how to simulate all of the forms of human behavior that used to come naturally to him. But his new assignment, which involves locating (and then possibly killing) a missing woman, soon leads him into situations that are exceedingly disorganized and full of human emotion (which, as a "dead" man, he no longer experiences or understands). It’s been several years since the Fourth Realm trilogy ended, and some readers might have wondered if the author had only one story to tell. But guess what? As good as the Fourth Realm books were, this one may be even more appealing: less fantastic, more grounded in a contemporary real world, with a narrator who is deeply scarred and endlessly fascinating."

Forget faith and uncertainty, rebellion and slavery. Forget beauty in all its forms. Forget ugliness, too.

Forget A Mighty Fortress Is Our God and the Kaddish. Forget an army of notes marching across a sheet of paper that are transformed into the Goldberg Variations. Forget the Taj Mahal at sunrise and the Grand Canyon at sunset, Shakespeares sonnets, War and Peace, and The Importance of Being Earnest. Forget the dabs of bright blue paint that became the eyes of Vincent van Gogh.

Forget the fingertip sensation of fur, velvet, a cashmere shawl, and a smooth green chip of beach glass. Forget the moist texture of raw meat and dry brittleness of dead leaves crushed in the hand.

Forget the taste of honey-soaked baklava. Ripe mango. Roasted garlic. Pickled herring. Licorice. Chocolate. Strawberry ice.

And smellsforget them as well. Crushed lilacs and the harsh scent of hot tar. A babys neck. Moist earth. Fresh-baked scones.

Forget the dead children from the Day of Rage and the speeches and sermons and memorial parks with names carved in stone. Forget every lesson from a teacher, every joke from a joker; every judgment from a judge.

Forget what your parents told you. Forget what you were taught as a child and what you learned on your own.

Forget what you think is right. And wrong.

Do all this and you might become me: a Spark contained within a Shell that stood in a doorway on Sixty-Second Street in Brooklyn while a Russian businessman named Peter Stetsko attempted to park his car.

It was November in New York Citydamp and cold. Death was present in the street, but there was nothing dramatic or sinister about my appearance. That night, I was neatly dressed in gray slacks and a V-neck sweater. In the outside pocket of my black raincoat, I carried a Brazilian-made semiautomatic pistol with skateboard tape attached to the grip. My Freedom ID card was concealed within a specially designed sleeve that made it impossible for the EYE system to detect my location.

A delivery van passed through the intersection, its tires hissing on the wet asphalt. I slipped on a phone headset and Laura whispered into my ear.

Ten-Thirty-Three on Flatbush Avenue and Farragut Road. One unit responding.

Any police activity in Bensonhurst?

Checking... It felt as if Laura was a real woman looking up a message board or gazing out a window, but she was only a Shadow. Somewhere in the Internet, one computer was talking to another, checking the data on a Web site that provided live-time reports of New York City police and fire department activity.

Nothing, Mr. Underwood.

My target had rented a two-bedroom house that reminded me of something a child would build with plastic blocks. It had a low brick wall in front that guarded a patch of concrete, painted grass green. There were red aluminum awnings over the two front windows and the front door.

Since my Transformation, I am capable of a limited range of emotional responses: curiosity, boredom, and disgust. I had been curious if Stetsko could squeeze his Mercedes-Benz between a blue delivery van and a mud-splattered Toyota. Now I was bored with his cautious maneuvering and ready to complete my assignment.

A young woman wearing a sequined green nightclub dress was sitting in the passenger seat of the Mercedes. Because she was a witness, she would also have to be neutralized. I would start with a head shot for Stetsko through the side window, circle the car and deal with this secondary target, then circle the car again for confirmation shots. The sequence wasnt difficult, but it would make more noise.

Any police activity, Laura?

Nothing.

A minute passed.

Nothing.

When Stetsko pulled out again for another try, the woman got out of the car. Like a photon of light, her green dress shimmered down the sidewalk, passed through the squeaky gate, and disappeared into the house. At that moment, my job became simple, direct, and clear.

The Mercedes moved six inches back toward the curb and then stopped. Stetskos head swung back and forth like a man watching a tennis match. He pulled the steering wheel hard to the right and the car made a squeaking noise.

Sixty-Second Street was dark and no one was on the sidewalk, but that didnt make me feel lonely or frightened. The rotting smell from a Dumpster appeared as a brownish-green color in my mind, but it didnt generate an emotional reaction. X = X. The world has no meaning aside from what is.

Across the street, Stetsko finally finished parking the car. He smiled, switched off the engine, and patted the steering wheel as if the Mercedes were a racehorse that had just survived a dangerous steeplechase.

Show scanned photograph, I told Laura and my targets face appeared on the smartphone screen.

Look right. Look left. No one was in the street. I walked over to the car, held up the phone, and compared Stetskos photograph to the reality in front of me. Then I raised my weapon and shot reality in the head.

2

I turned away from my target, walked five blocks east to Gravesend Park, and tossed the gun into a storm drain. Perhaps one day a city sewer worker might find this artifactrusty and covered with mudbut it would have no connection with my identity.

A few blocks from the park I waved down an unregistered cab and paid the driver cash to take me back to Manhattan. For the last two years, Ive lived in the top loft of an industrial building in New Yorks Chinatown. My landlord, an older woman named Margaret Chen, likes the fact that I always pay in cash and never ask for a receipt. There were only three rules for the tenants in her building: no checks, no fireworks, and no slaughtering chickens.

Before my Transformation, I lived like an ordinary Human Unit in an Upper East Side apartment with cooking pots and self-assembled teak-veneer furniture. Nowadays I try to own only one object in each category: a chair and a table, a bed and a blanket, a cup and a spoon. The loft has been used as a factory space by different businesses, and some of them left obsolete equipment bolted to the floor or shoved against the wall. Theres an industrial sewing machine with a black rubber drive belt, a drill press, and a piano-sized machine that used to stamp advertising slogans on pencils.

My living space is quiet and clean and unencumbered. None of the objects I possess trigger memories that are separate from their function. I own a cup that is only a cup, not something that reminds me of a trip to Italy.

After locking the entrance door, I removed all my clothes and placed them in nylon bags. Everything worn that evening would be washed or dry-cleaned at a laundry on Mott Street. Within twenty-four hours, all the invisible burned and unburned particles from the fired bullets would disappear.

I took a shower, pulled on a sweatshirt and warm-up pants, and returned to the main room. Rule #4 states that I must supply my Shell with a minimum of two thousand calories a day, so I opened a bottle of a nutritional drink developed for the elderly called ComPlete, poured it in the cup, and mixed in a tablespoon of a coarse fiber supplement.

I have a good memory, but dont like to re-experience the past. If thoughts are not controlled, then each remembered experience becomes an alternative reality. When I thought about shooting Peter Stetsko, my mind brought up different detailsthe sound of my shoes walking across the street and the vision of the first bullet shattering the side window. But these memories didnt generate feelings of regret or happiness. I have a Spark that creates my thoughts.

The Spark is bright and pure and transcendent, but its held captive within a Shell of flesh and bone.

The woman in the green shimmery dress and all the other Human Units walking around New York City feel emotions because their Spark is attached to their Shell.

But all my attachments have melted away. Yes, I can breathe and swallow and fire a handgun. In many ways, I resemble a human being. But there is nothing inside me. Im filled with darkness.

I opened up a second bottle of ComPlete, then turned on my computer and spoke to Edward. Like Laura, Edward is a Shadowa speech-recognition program connected to a computer with reactive intelligence. After you purchase and download a Shadow, you can pick their sex, age, language, and general personality. There are Shadows that can tell jokes, help you stop smoking, or say that they love you. You can spend the day chatting with a Shadow programmed to be a cute teenage girl or a Shadow who soundsand actslike your mother.

Hello, Edward.

Good evening, Mr. Underwood. Edward had a British accent and was programmed to be polite and formal. How may I help you?

Please show A Boy for Baxter.

From the beginning, sir?

Yes. Thank you.

A Boy for Baxter is a documentary film about a boy named Gordon who is given a specially trained service dog named Baxter. Gordon is a Native American child whose brain was damaged in utero when his birth mother drank alcohol and sniffed gasoline. He was adopted as a baby by Don and Pat Miller, a Quaker couple, with two other children. The movie begins when Gordon is eight years old. He throws toys at his sisters, tries to jump out of a car window, and pulls all the paint cans off a shelf at a hardware store. But Gordons tantrums are the most spectacular part of the film. He lies on the floor, screaming and pounding his fists. When Pat tries to help him, the boy picks up a lamp and smashes it against the wall.

After several boring scenes where Gordons parents talk to psychologists and cry, a service-dog agency agrees to see if the boy can live with a pet. This is when Gordon meets Baxter, a German shepherd, at a dog-training school in Oregon. During the weeks after I left the Ettinger Clinic, I watched one particular scene hundreds of times. Gordon is at the training school with his parents and two sisters, but somehow Baxter knows that hes supposed to be attached to this Human Unit. The dogs head tilts to the left, then tilts to the right, and then he jumps up onto a sofa next to the boy.

The rest of the film shows Baxter and Gordon together. When Gordon is worried or distressed the dog pushes him down, gets on top of him, and licks his face. If the boy lies on the floor screaming and curled up in a ball, the dog pushes his muzzle through the locked arms as if he is forcing open a puzzle.

I would like to own a service dog that would be trained to perceive the different emotions displayed by Human Units. The dog would bark or wag its tail or lick my hand to tell me what someone else was feeling. Together, we would be almost a person.

The following morning I took another shower, drank a bottle of ComPlete, and wrote a message in soft language to Miss Holquist, the woman in charge of the Special Services Section. Miss Holquist is my supervisor. She picks my targets and pays me when Ive completed an assignment.

// Made a successful presentation to the customer. No further meeting is necessary.

Later that day, my payment would be transferred to an account with a British-owned bank on the island of Malta. For my day-to-day expenses, I keep a few thousand dollars with an American bank that has ATM machines all over the city. Both banks require that you use an optical fingerprint sensor when you access your account. My real fingerprints would have been tracked back to my previous identity, but Miss Holquist solved that problem. When I changed my name, she gave me three gummy fingers made out of soft plastic. Each finger had the loops and whirls of an unregistered print that was probably taken from someone who lived in a jungle. If I pressed one of these plastic fingers against a sensor pad, my bank account appeared on a display screen.

Peter Stetskos death was mentioned two days later in a brief article in the New York Post. According to the police, Stetsko was an investment consultant to the Russian community in Brighton Beach. He had no criminal record, but had once been questioned at Kennedy Airport about the large amount of currency in his carry-on bag.

Now that my job was completed, I resumed my usual activities. I dropped off my laundry, bought a case of ComPlete, and dust-mopped the floor. I like watching sports on my computeranything with continual activity that makes my eyes follow a ball. That night I spent three hours watching a Gaelic football match even though I didnt understand the rules.

The next morning, I woke up at 6 a.m. An orange light glowed behind a line of buildings, and then the sun floated upward past rooftop water tanks. At 8 a.m., my computer beeped and Edward spoke softly into my earphone.

Good morning, sir.

Morning, Edward.

I hope youre feeling well, sir.

Im functional.

Theres some new e-mail in your message box.

Usually, Miss Holquist sends me e-mails with soft language through the public Internet, but this was coded information sent through the Darknet. I accessed the decoding software on my computer, typed in the activation key, and read:

// I realize that youve just finished a job, but weve received an emergency request to deal with a problem in Great Britain. Please let me know in the next 24 hours if you wish to accept or reject the assignment. HOLQUIST.

As usual, the message included the name and photograph of the target, his last known address, and the fee I would receive for the job.

I went online and did some quick research. The target was an Englishman named Victor Mallory who was the former CEO of a private equity fund called Endeavor Investments. Endeavor had gone bankrupt a year ago and now Mallory was being sued in several countries. I assumed that I had been hired by an investor who wanted a more direct means of expressing his annoyance.

Normally, I would be given a few weeks of free time before my next assignment. Miss Holquists unexpected request made my Spark bounce around inside my Shell, so I decided to calm my agitation by visiting the pedestrian walkway that runs across the Brooklyn Bridge. Two granite and limestone towers hold a pair of massive cables that display catenary curvesa three-dimensional display of a hyperbolic cosine function. Attached to the curves is a web of diagonal and vertical cables that hold up the bridge platforms. When I stand at the center point and look outward, it appears as if the sky is divided into clearly marked sections. Randomness disappears, and Im able to sort through my wayward thoughts and place them in different boxes.

Brilliant Dystopian Thriller
By Kevin Joseph
As a fan of The Fourth Realm Trilogy, I was eager for the opportunity to review the latest work from the enigmatic John Twelve Hawks. For readers new to this author, there has been considerable media swirl over the years regarding Hawks's decision to keep his real identity anonymous, even to his agent and publisher. It seems that the same mistrust of governments and corporations that pervades his fiction writing has also shaped the way he chooses to live. And for me, that makes his novels all the more compelling.

In Spark, Hawks narrates through the first person viewpoint of a seriously-scarred man. After barely surviving a motorcycle accident, Jacob Underwood's near-death experience has left him with a condition called Cotard's syndrome, which makes him believe he's become a type of living dead, nothing more than a life force or "spark" floating in a body or "shell" with no meaningful connection between mind and body. This condition manifests itself in strange behaviors, like an aversion to any physical contact with people, a refusal to consume solid food, and the inability to experience or perceive most human emotions. It's little wonder, then, that Underwood, a highly intelligent computer programmer whose condition makes him incredibly focused on completing assigned tasks with ruthless efficiency, is recruited as an assassin for a shadowy corporation.

What follows is a novel so well-plotted and unique that I guarantee you won't be able to tear yourself away. As Underwood takes on the most challenging assignment of his career, he begins to undergo a personal transformation in his outlook on the world. And while Underwood begins to question the merits of his amoral belief system and what this means for completion of his assignment, Hawks has the perfect forum to air his views on metaphysical questions, the surveillance state in which the story is set, and what it really means to be human.

If you are a fan of edgy and creative dystopian fiction, Spark is an intelligent thriller you won't want to miss.

Best book I have read this year, maybe ever
By Darcy Pennell
Part psychological thriller, part dystopian fantasy, Spark: A Novel is an exciting, fast-paced book set in a future where the government controls every aspect of life and corporate greed has created an underground economy that operates on its own set of rules. Jacob Underwood is a man with a rare psychological condition that makes him the perfect "enforcer" in this new economy. Underwood is an emotionless and methodical assassin, until something goes wrong on one of his jobs and his world begins to unravel around him.

John Twelve Hawks creates a rich and believable universe for Underwood to play in. Hawks avoids flowery and bloated descriptions in favor of a writing style that is as precise and methodical as his lead character. Each word is perfectly chosen to create maximum impact. Every element of world-building and exposition serves to not only shape the environment, but also to provide subtle insight into Underwood's character. The result is a story that moves quickly and effortlessly from the first page to the last.

Underwood isn't really a good guy or a bad guy, he's neither hero nor antihero, he just exists. We can't exactly root for him, but we can't really root against him, either. The assassins misdeeds are many, yet Hawks manages to make him sympathetic.

At times the violence is a bit graphic, but it never reaches the level of senseless gore. There are a few disturbing images, including some animal cruelty, but it passes quickly and serves a purpose to the plot. Beyond these bits of violence, the book is surprisingly tame. There's no gratuitous sex or language--there's simply no room for it.

Spark: A Novel is an absolute must-read for anyone who enjoys thrillers or mysteries. Despite a bit of graphic violence, it should be appropriate for teenagers and above.

The perfect assassin...or is he?
By William Merrill
Mysterious author John Twelve Hawks, creator of the Traveler series, has constructed a very clever new antihero in his new thriller Spark. After recovering from a traumatic brain energy, Jacob Underwood lost all capacity for emotion, a Transformation that makes him a perfect assassin, a trade he has become quite successful at. His "Spark" -- his inner being (or soul?) -- is disconnected from his body, or "Shell." This story is about what happens when unexpected events begin to shift the assassin's perceptions of himself and the world he lives in. Could his profession, or even his very existence, be at stake? Mr. Twelve Hawks builds a riveting page-turner around this situation and his assassin character.

"This concise text provides a practical approach to the techniques of arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery. … The target audience includes any and all orthopedic surgeons who perform rotator cuff surgeries. … It will serve … as a valuable tool to assist in the transition and to optimize the skills of those surgeons already dabbling in arthroscopic techniques. My Grandfather's Coat, by Jim Aylesworth

A rollicking, rhyming, fun rendition of a favorite folksong about a many-times recycled coat -- by the award-winning, bestselling team of Jim Aylesworth and Barbara McClintock.

When my grandfather came to America
he made himself a handsome coat!
Then he wore it and he wore it and he wore it--
until it was all worn out!
So what did he do?

   He snipped and he clipped--
and he stitched and he sewed. . .
and out of the still-good cloth of his coat--
he made himself a smart jacket!

How many things can Grandfather make
out of that old frayed coat?

Jim Aylesworth's satisfying retelling and Barbara McClintock's heart-warming pictures celebrate the clever recycling of a beloved coat that lasts four generations -- until it becomes this story!

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—This new adaptation of the Yiddish folk song presented in Simms Taback's Joseph Had a Little Overcoat (Viking, 1999) and Phoebe Gilman's Something from Nothing (Scholastic, 1992) is a fresh rhythmic retelling with charming cartoon-style illustrations that deserves a place even in collections that own the other two. Aylesworth's story, told in the voice of the main character's granddaughter, recounts highlights of her grandfather's life: coming to America, becoming a tailor, and making himself "a handsome coat…that he wore on his wedding day!" The worn coat becomes "a smart jacket"; the shabby jacket, "a snazzy vest"; the frayed vest, "a stylish tie." In this version, the threadbare tie is transformed into a toy for a great grandson's kittens, then a cozy nest for a mouse and her babies. As in both older versions, this one features repetition and a rhyming refrain. McClintock's pen-and-ink detailed watercolor illustrations highlight four generations of family history. Following the title-page scene that shows ships streaming toward Ellis Island, then a photolike pose of grandfather as a boy on deck passing the Statue of Liberty, the story unfolds in two-to-three small vignettes per page, each accompanied by a snippet of text, with a full-page scene at each major juncture. The paintings highlight McClintock's special skill for aging grandpa. Her eye for detail is apparent in ever-changing clothing styles; in a sole coming loose from young grandpa's shoe; and the evolution of his sewing machines from treadle to modern motorized. This is a tale worth reading again and again.—Susan Scheps, formerly at Shaker Public Library, OH

An heirloom book
By Jason Kirkfield
I recently read two newly published Coming to America books. This one, My Grandfather's Coat by Jim Aylesworth, was the better of the two, and in fact one of the more satisfying picture books I have had the pleasure to read.

I love reading new picture books, but I also love when said books draw inspiration from the vast trove of children's literature. My Grandfather's Coat follows in the footsteps of Simms Taback's Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, with which it shares inspiration from the same Yiddish folksong.

This is a circle of life story in the spirit of Grandpa Green and like that Caldecott Honor winner, a touching tale of multi-generational love. As with any historical book worth its salt, this drives home the reality that our ancestors made do with less. They worked hard, played less, and created more. Illustrations keep pace with the story; an observant eye will notice many small details changing over time.

My Grandfather's Coat has almost everything you could want from a picture book with the sole exception of endpapers. They are plain, but at least they are the same navy as the coat/jacket/vest/tie. I cannot fault illustrator Barbara McClintock, especially when she was so industrious in other respects. The colophon, for example, is a smorgasbord of book-nerd details:

"The display type was set in Forum Titling. The text was set in Aged Book. Barbara used a Hunt #100 steel pen nib and dip pen, Higgins Waterproof Ink, and Winsor Newton Water Colours on Arches 90-pound cold press watercolor paper."

All in all, a wonderful picture book. I hope Scholastic promotes the heck out of it. The Jewish details are thoughtful but subtle. This book is appropriate for all audiences and an obvious from-the-grandparents gift for any newborn.

Yiddish Folksong Revitalized in Award Winning Picture Book
By Sandra
Some folktales and folk songs have traction. They are ripe for appearing in multiple formats. Such is the case of the well-known Yiddish folksong, Hob Ikn Mir a Mantl (I Had a Little Overcoat). Jim Aylesworth and Barbara McClintock’s latest picture book, My Grandfather’s Coat (2014), rivals the earlier versions- Joseph Had a Little Overcoat (1999) and Something From Nothing (1992).

My Grandfather’s Coat is set in rural 20th century Connecticut, a deviation from the folksong’s original Eastern European roots. This unique setting allows young readers to catch a glimpse of the immigrant experience in the American countryside. Thus, the story can be contrasted with the majority of the Jewish immigrant stories that focus on the more common urban American experience. Subtle references to the characters’ Jewish heritage are scattered among Barbara McClintock’s delightful illustrations. A Shabbat (Sabbath) dinner table and wedding scene are the most prominent. Moreover, the book mirrors a well-known trend among 19th-20th century Eastern European Jewish immigrants. Many started out in the garment industry and eventually became storeowners.

The repetitive verses along with the compatible illustrations provide warmth and charm to this intergenerational tale. Young readers will have no difficulty relating to the narrator who is looking back at her grandparent’s life. Stories that include references to multiple generations help children make vital connections to their family’s history. At home or in the classroom, the reading of this story will promote interest in one’s heritage and family background.

Exceptional and memorable picture books maintain their young audiences’ attention by utilizing free flowing words that are adeptly combined with engaging illustrations. As a balanced team, Jim and Barbara have found the “sweet spot” for the appropriate cadence. Short passages matched with simple drawings make it possible for readers and nonreaders to follow the timeline of the story and to appreciate the intended messages.

Intertwined within the main character’s experiences are important lessons that can be shared with young children. Being able to reuse and recycle usable objects models the importance of making the most out of one’s possessions. The story also demonstrates how material possessions can oftentimes be overvalued while intangible aspects of life such as family traditions are invaluable.

In exchange for an interview and honest review, I was sent a copy of My Grandfather’s Coat.

I actually received this book by winning it in a contest, although it is the type of book I would purchase to share with my class. I did so a few weeks ago as it coincided with our "Coming to America" lessons for social studies perfectly! The story is rich and vibrant with the coat being the "thread" (literally;) throughout it. My students have made this their favorite book choice from my personal library and have all checked it out now since I first presented it to them. It is a book you should read to your child and I highly recommend it for a classroom! Beautiful story. So glad I had the opportunity to read and to own it.
