A Nutcracker Christmas**** (part of the Christmas Traditions Novellas)

Isabella Brandt is one of many ballerinas in the 1945 San Francisco Ballet Corps. She, like the others, are trying out for a coveted position in the upcoming performance of the Nutcracker.
Violinist Victor Randolf recently immigrated to America from Hungary and was fortunate to land a position in the Orchestra for the Ballet Corps. As Isabella and Victor work together they form a closeness neither of them expected. With Thanksgiving coming up, Isabella invites many of the ballerinas and Victor to her apartment. After the delicious Thanksgiving meal, they gather in the living room enjoying coffee and listening to Victor play his violin. An unexpected “guest” shows up, the last person Isabella expected to ever see again. Beyond shocked, Isabella can only stare while her other guests leave. What, how can this happen? What does this mean for her future?

I like the way Jennifer weaves her story and shows her characters feelings, challenges, past hurts, hopes, dreams and faith. Taking us backstage for a glimpse of the hard work it takes to produce a production like the Nutcracker and into their lives away from the stage.

A very pleasant surprise

Because of an unforeseen accident Isabella had a major role in the Nutcracker this year. The problem was that the pianist was one of the victims of the accident so Victor, a violinist who was part of the program, filled in temporarily as the accompanist during rehearsals. Victor's music inspired Isabella to perform better than she had ever done before: together they were almost magical.

However, Isabella had been engaged to a soldier several years ago. He had been presumed dead, but it had just been learned he was very much alive.

Will this new revelation destroy the magic between Isabella and Victor? Or has time and war changed Isabella and her fiancee too much to go back to what they had? And what effect will this development have on the Nutcracker? I won't tell.

To be honest, I was tempted to delete this story because it sounded like something I wouldn't really enjoy. I am SO glad I didn't! This was a marvelous story! Do yourself a favor: grab a hot chocolate, settle back, and spend a little time with Isabella and her beloved Nutcracker. You will be glad you did.

Isabella Brandt loves the Ballet. For years, she has dreamed of being the lead dancer in a major production. When a twist of events lands her the principal role in The Nutcracker and at the same time temporarily disables the accompanying pianist, she must rely on the music of an accomplished violinist from the San Francisco Ballet Company. A very handsome Hungarian violinist. Victor Randolph loves playing his violin in the orchestra. When a little accident causes him to cross paths with the lead ballerina in The Nutcracker, he never imagines that he would fall in love with her. Yet as the weeks progress, he finds himself drawn closer to her. But then a visit from a surprise caller stops Victor from telling her how much he cares for her. Now the only thing to get them through is the Lord and a Nutcracker Christmas.

An Exciting Beginning to this Series!

The Eighth Prisoner is a gripping beginning to this series. The characters were well developed with interesting storylines that kept me riveted. There were many possible suspects that made it difficult to guess who had committed the murders. As more suspects were culled out the mystery become more complex and the action built up making this an enjoyable read.

I look forward to the next book in this fascinating, historical period piece.

Fascinating read, and an absolute must for anyone interested in the Ebola outbreak in Liberia.

Gripping story. Could not put the book down, read it all in one go. The hero who wrote this, Dr. Appel, gives keen insight into the logistical nightmare that haunts the medical community in Liberia, as well as cultural factors negatively impacting the ability to deliver effective healthcare.

In spite of the myriad problems, Dr. Appel saved lives every day, bravely facing the risk of contracting Ebola all the while.

We owe so much to doctors like this author, who willingly put their lives on the line to care for others, in the spirit of Christ.

Especially of note are the suggestions given at the end explaining what actions would lead to successfully containing the epidemic.

Readers of this book may also be interested in an older book, written by Laurie Garrett, "The Coming Plague..."

brutally honest account of the ebola challenge

I have the honor of working with Dr. Appel once in a while here in the United States. His accounts of the challenges he faces daily in Chad are enough to make me very appreciative of our supplies, staff, and facilities we tend to take for granted over here. For him to volunteer to face Ebola head on, risking his life to care for others, is a dedication and selflessness rarely seen. I can't thank him enough for sharing his experience. This is a must read for everyone. It instills humility. We
should all be more grateful.

Interesting and enlightening. Of course I had heard of Ebola, but didn't know much about it. This book helped me to understand more about it and gave a lot or human interest stories about those who have been affected by it. Good but not enough.

This is a pretty good book for the most part. It gives lots of words for different situations and shows their common connections. I just wish there was more example sentences as well as an index for what pages the words are on. The words are still easy to find given the situations of Home, Daily life, People, School & Work, Travel and Entertainment in the contents. Overall I would recommend this book to any one who can read hiragana and katakana the formatting is much nicer than the authors other titles and you can just flip through any section when your board since there is no structure to follow.

Great study aid!

Book is very helpful in displaying the information needed on how common phrases should be worded in Japanese. The sections are well thought out. I use this as a reference many times through studying and to help translate.

Very Useful for serious learners.

This book is geared towards more serious learners and not for someone whose just wanting to learn something for a short trip to japan, so if you're interested in only learning something minor or not continuing your studies, then this book is not for you. That being said, it's a extremely useful book for hardcore learners of the Japanese language. This book is more of a reference book but it gives detailed explanations on how exactly a word should be said so you know how and when to use it. It'll definitely make you sound and feel more natural in the Japanese language.

This book does not have a index but the well organized table of context does make up as a good substitute. Also, there is no romanji (which is good thing), so you do need to know hiragana and katakana before picking up this book. This book does use furigana so you don't have to know the kanji right off. I would suggest this book for upper-beginner to intermediate learners. One neat feature is that there is a Appendix at the end of the book that visually shows you correct and incorrect collocations (word pairings).

I already love this book and can see me using it for a long time to come.
