The Final Silence (The Belfast Novels), by Stuart Neville

In Belfast, Northern Ireland, memories of the city’s troubled history haunt every street corner, but for one tortured soul, the incredible violence in his past is also his most cherished legacy.

Rea Carlisle, daughter of influential Northern Irish politician Graham Carlisle, has inherited a house from an uncle she never knew. It doesn’t take her long to clear out the dead man’s possessions, but when Rea forces open a locked room, she finds a leather-bound book. Tucked in its pages are fingernails and locks of hair: a catalog of victims.

Horrified, Rea wants to go straight to the police, but her father intervenes—he’s worked too hard to have his brother’s twisted legacy ruin his promising political career. Thwarted by her father, Rea turns to the only person she can think of: disgraced police inspector Jack Lennon.

Meanwhile, Lennon finds himself the lead suspect in a murder investigation led by one of the force’s toughest cops, DCI Serena Flanagan. His implication in the murder, coupled with the story Rea has brought to him, leaves Lennon more than slightly suspicious that the two are part of a grisly conspiracy.

Praise for The Final Silence

Nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Novel

December 2014 Indie Next List

"Never forgets the human heart that beats inside the bleakest darkness."
—Val McDermid

"Like dispatches from a war zone—terse prose, dark thoughts, raw feelings . . . A more formal mystery than Neville's previous ones, its characters remain possessed by Belfast's old, familiar ghosts."
—The New York Times Book Review

"The critics are already calling Stuart Neville 'the king of neo-noir' and the shoe fits. If you loved Ratlines (and I did), you will adore The Final Silence, set again in Belfast with a plot so strange, tight and compelling, you won’t be able to put the book down."
—The Globe and Mail

"Excellent . . . Neville has no end of tricks up his sleeve."
—Toronto Star

"Deftly plotted, fast paced and the denouement packs a real punch."
—The Guardian

"A great thriller . . . [Neville] has created a strange and fresh story that will have readers perched on the edge of their seats."
—Suspense Magazine

"Uncompromisingly noir accounts of a city where the legacy of The Troubles refuses to go away."
—Reviewing the Evidence

"Classic noir."
—Deadly Diversions

"Superlative . . . A pulse-pounding crime novel from a master of the genre."
—Booklist, Starred Review

"This is the fourth Lennon tale with the shadow of Northern Ireland’s past bloody sectarian violence, the Troubles, still hanging over all . . . Alternating points of view reveal the horrifying mind of the killer as well as the hate and suspicion that remain years after peace has been declared . . . [A] highly regarded series."
—Library Journal

"Gripping from start to finish . . . Neville's economical yet nuanced prose style drives the plot forward at breakneck speed while building complex characters with the deftness that defines a thriller writer at the top of his game."
—Irish Independent

"[Nevillle's] novels tend to revolve around contemporary crimes that have their roots buried deep in Northern Ireland’s Troubles. The Final Silence is no exception, its succinct and pacy storytelling stretched taut across a morass of unresolved tensions and motives for murder that don’t necessarily fit the prevailing post-peace process narrative."
—Declan Burke, The Irish Times

"Crisply written and fast-moving, the novel has a brutal honesty that confirms Neville’s place in the first division of crime writers."
—The Spectator (UK)

"Neville's brutal plotting and ability to ratchet up the tension in almost every scene keep the pages turning until the chilling conclusion. A masterclass in the psycho-thriller genre."
—The Herald Scotland

“Engrossing . . . the action builds to a chilling conclusion.”
—Publishers Weekly

"Neville's gritty tale sets a man barely holding on to his personal worth loose in a city still recovering from the Troubles."
—Kirkus Reviews

Praise for Stuart Neville

"Neville's novel is a coldly lucid assessment of the fragility of the Irish peace . . . a rare example of legitimate noir fiction."
—The New York Times Book Review

“An exceptional talent. Crime fiction doesn’t get much better.”
—Lee Child

"The current master of neo-noir detective fiction."
—Boston Globe

"Stuart Neville belongs to a younger generation of writers for whom the region's darkest years are history—but that history endures."
—Washington Post

"Neville's tightly wound, emotionally resonant account of an ex-IRA hit man's struggle to conquer his past displays an acute understanding of the true state of Northern Ireland."
—Los Angeles Times

"Complex fiction with a disturbing ring of truth."
—Financial Times

Raymond Drew wanted to die on the towpath. Even if there was no sun, no blue sky to die beneath, he wanted it to be by the river. He didn’t care if the ground was sodden with rainfall as he collapsed.
If he could manage it, he’d fall dead into the water. At least that way he could be sure. To survive and be brought to a hospital was unthinkable. They would contact his family, such as it was, and his sister Ida would go to his house.
And the things she would find there.
He should have destroyed them, but he couldn’t, he was not strong enough to take that action and endure the consequences. It would be easier simply to die. At least if he was gone, he would not have to face that terrible discovery. The real Raymond Drew, the creature that had hidden beneath this human skin for more than six decades, would be revealed.
Raymond locked the front door of his house, the three-bedroom semi on Deramore Gardens he’d lived in for thirty years. Just one of many identical structures on this street, red brick, early 1900s, the kind of houses that middle-class couples and property developers were falling over themselves to buy until the financial crisis. Raymond had shared the first two years here with a wife he’d barely known, let alone loved. Dead and buried now, and he hadn’t missed her for a moment.
He tucked the keys into his pocket. The grass of his lawn looked like stubble on a drunkard’s chin. He hadn’t cut it in years. The man next door, Hughes his name was, gave up asking Raymond to mow it and did it himself every few weeks. The spring would soon start it growing again.
Not that it mattered to Raymond any more.
He left his car on the driveway, closed the gate behind him, and walked. The Vauxhall Corsa didn’t have an MOT or tax. It hadn’t been driven in months.
A few minutes took him down the shallow incline of Sunnyside Sreet, past the corner shops and Chinese takeaways, to Annadale Embankment. He avoided eye contact with students and housewives on the way. At the bridge by the river, he waited at the pedestrian crossing for the green man to appear and tell him to go. Like a good boy. Raymond had learned to be a good boy long ago, to be quiet, respectful, obey all rules while outside his home. Not to draw attention.
Once across the dark slow-moving water to the Stranmillis side, he walked south along the river’s edge, beneath the bony branches of the still winter-bare trees. Past the newly rebuilt Lyric Theatre, on further, the blocks of apartments with their waterside views. Traffic rumbled to his right, cars, vans and lorries filtering in and out of the city, heading north or east.
That sickly swelling in his chest, pulsing, robbing him of breath. He did not slow his pace, even as the sweat dripped from his eyebrows. Cold on his back, running down his spine.
Raymond had gone to the doctor two months before. A softspoken and serious young woman, she had talked about medication, pills, things to ease the tired muscle in his breast. She talked about more tests, bloods, wires tethered to his skin, a specialist at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
It was serious, the young doctor had said. It was only a matter of time before an attack came, perhaps a big one. Appointments were made, a prescription printed on patterned paper.
Raymond did not keep the appointments, nor did he have the prescription filled. He simply wanted to know.
It had been a month since the fluttering in his chest had intensified. Then the dizzy spells, the cold sweats, the feeling of his torso being crushed by some invisible hand. He awoke throughout the night, gasping, wild horses galloping inside his ribcage.
       Only a matter of time.
A cool wave washed across his brow, and his legs weakened. He gripped the railing to steady himself. Waited while the blood coursed through his body.
A pub just ahead, perched on the riverbank, tables and benches and umbrellas damp and pathetic in the grey. A drink. Just one last swallow to see it done.
Raymond entered the pub. The only other patrons were a pair
of businessmen comparing charts over cups of coffee. They did
not notice him. But the girl behind the bar did.
He approached. The girl smiled. Blonde hair tied back, dressed in black trousers and a shirt that clung to her form. He stared for a moment. Felt his teeth with his tongue.
“What can I get for you?” she asked.
       A foreign girl, Eastern European.
Raymond had been to Eastern Europe more than once. Even before the Soviets lost their hold. He had tasted many things there. Things few men ever taste.
He went to reply, but his throat and his tongue would not obey. Sweat tingled on his cheek. Something pulsed inside his skull.
“Are you okay?” the girl asked. “Do you need help?”
“Whiskey,” he said, his voice crackling in his throat.
She hesitated, a thin line between her eyebrows. “Bush, Jameson, Jack Daniel’s.”
“Black Bush,” he said. “A double, no water.”
She fetched him the drink, served it in a tumbler. The liquidglowed amber, swaying in the glass as it clinked on the bar top.
A shrill thought sounded in his mind, causing a moment of giddy panic. Had he brought any money? Raymond checked each pocket in turn, the fear building in him, until his fingers touched leather at his hip. He opened the wallet, sighed when he found
a twenty-pound note, and handed it over.
“Keep . . .” His lungs betrayed him. He inhaled as much air as they would hold. “Keep the change.”
A smile flashed on her face, then was swept aside by concern. “Are you sick?” she asked. “Do you need a doctor?”
Raymond shook his head, no breath to spare. He took the glass to the farthest table, pausing on the way to let another dizzy wave pass. Raising the tumbler, he smelled warm earthy peat, sweet caramel, spice. Heat in his throat, the aftertaste of aniseed.
As he sat sipping at the whiskey, a knot of pain tightened around his left arm. It travelled up through his shoulder and neck before hammering on the inside of his skull. He held the table’s edge.
       Not here. Not here.
Raymond downed the rest of the whiskey in one gulp, coughed, and marvelled at the constellations that flowered across his vision.
The girl approached. “Sir? I can call a doctor.”
He shook his head, stood, made for the exit, carried more by his momentum than his legs.
Outside, he went to the towpath.
       Here?
Too close to the pub and the houses. Half a mile downriver, past the boat club, the buildings would recede, nothing but grass and trees along the river’s edge. He had walked the towpath many times, letting the quiet air enshroud him, the calm seeping in through his pores.
Another charge of pain coursed from his arm up to his brain, stronger than before.
       Walk. Jesus Christ, walk.
His legs obeyed. Time bent and cracked around him. Grey turned to green. Civilisation faded into the distance, only the rough ground and the sound of the wind through leaves.
A woman and a dog. It sniffed at him as he passed, whined, smelling the death on him. His and that of the others.
A cyclist, wrapped in Lycra, a helmet on his head, skidding to avoid a collision.
“Fuck’s sake, watch where you’re going,” the cyclist shouted as he pedalled away.
       Raymond did not answer.
He stepped off the gravel path, toward the grass and weeds at the edge. His shoes sank in the wetness. Hard, needling cold swamping his feet. The river flowed past, fat from the rainfall.
“God, let it be now,” Raymond said.
He laughed at the futility of his prayer. He and God had parted ways half a lifetime ago.
He dug his fingers into his pocket, the tips already going numb. His keys snagged on a thread. He pulled harder, and they came free. It took the last of his strength to toss them six feet. They splashed in the water without a sound. At least none that he could hear.
Another shock of pain, bigger than his body could hold, raging up through his left arm, his shoulder, his neck, then an explosion in his brain like the birth of a star.
       “Now,” he said.
The water came to meet him, swallowed him, as tender as it was cold. A million images streaked through Raymond’s mind, each one as bold and brilliant as the last, faces he’d known, many he hadn’t, some of them twisted in terror.
They sparked and fell like the scatterings of a firework, falling into black, down to where the fire awaited him. Down into the final silence.

2
Rea Carlisle sat on the stairs, looking at the black plastic bags, a man’s life wrapped up and ready to be dumped.
She hadn’t seen her uncle for twenty-eight years, and she remembered the occasion better than the man. She had been six years old, a funeral in a draughty church whose location she could not recall. People had whispered, asking what her mother was doing bringing a child that age to a funeral? The babysitter hadn’t turned up, and Rea’s mother had scrubbed her face with spit and tissue before bundling her into her best Sunday school dress and dragging her out to the car.
Uncle Raymond had stood quiet and still throughout, had smiled and shaken hands with people who seemed to be as strange to him as they were to Rea.
       Her mother embraced him.
“Och, Raymond, I’m so sorry,” she said.
His arms remained by his sides, his back stiff and straight. “Thanks for coming, Ida,” he said.
When they put his wife in the ground, Uncle Raymond brought a finger to his eye. But there was no tear to wipe away. Even though Rea could recall only the most vague image of his face, she remembered clearly how silly the action of wiping away a non-existent tear seemed to her.
She asked her mother about it on the drive home in the Mini Metro.
Ida stayed quiet for a while, watching the road ahead. Then she said, “Well, he was always an odd cratur.”
After that, they never talked much about him. Rea knew her mother had tried to contact Raymond, by telephone, by letter, but never a reply. He faded from their lives like mist from a window.
The phone call had come a week ago.
Rea had been sitting at her kitchen table, eating a microwaved ready meal straight from the plastic container, scrolling through the listings of a jobs website on her iPad. She lifted her mobile knowing it would be her mother’s name on the display. Ida had a knack of calling at awkward moments. When Rea was eating, or in the bath, or on the toilet, or trying to get out the door, she could almost guarantee the phone would ring.
       “It’s Raymond,” Ida said.
Rea’s mind scrambled to connect the name to anyone she knew. God help her, she didn’t want another one of those verbal tennis matches where her mother insisted Rea knew someone while Rea swore blind she didn’t.
Och, you know him surely, Ida would say.
       I don’t, Rea would counter.
       Och, you do.
       No, I don’t.
Back and forth until Rea would be ready to scream.
Before any of that could happen, Ida said, “He’s dead.”
Rea heard a watery sigh in the phone’s earpiece.
       “Who’s dead?” she asked.
“Raymond,” Ida said, exasperation in her voice. “Your uncle Raymond. My brother.”
The white wisp of a man by the graveside came back to her. The finger at the dry eye. The features she could not form into a real face.
       “Jesus,” Rea said.
Ida tutted at the minor blasphemy.
“Sorry,” Rea said, not meaning it. “How did he die?”
“They’re not sure,” Ida said. “Maybe drowned, but they don’t know.”
       “Drowned?”
“He was found in the Lagan yesterday afternoon, all snagged up in the weeds.”
Rea heard a crack in her mother’s voice. A sharp, high-pitched inhalation. She pictured a tissue screwed up in Ida’s fingers, ready to dab at her cheeks. Keeping it all bound up tight like a ball of string in her breast in case she made a show of herself. Ida Carlisle was the kind of woman who wept at her kitchen table, a cup of tea going cold in front of her, at least one closed door between her and anyone else.
“They found out who he was from his wallet,” Ida said. “It took them a day to find out he was related to me. The police called at the house this evening.”
       “Was Dad there?” Rea asked.
“No, he was at a party meeting. He says he’ll be home as soon as it’s over.”
Rea suppressed a curse. Graham Carlisle made his wife look like a well of warm emotion. God forbid he should let Ida’s bereavement get in the way of his ambitions. He’d had a seat at the Stormont Assembly for five years now, and they were grooming him for Westminster. They would announce his candidacy at the next general election. To him, all else was secondary.
“I’ll come over,” Rea said. “Give me half an hour.”
Before she could hang up, Ida said, “I didn’t know him.”
Rea kept silent, left the space for her mother to fill with whatever troubled her.
Ida took a quivering breath and said, “He was my brother, and I didn’t know him. I haven’t seen him in near thirty years. I don’t know if he still lives in that wee house. I don’t know if he married again. I don’t know if he had any children. I could’ve passed him on the street, and I wouldn’t have recognized him. I should’ve known him better.”
“You tried,” Rea said. “I remember you writing him letters and sending him Christmas cards. You did try.”
       “I should’ve tried harder.”

"You've been digging yourself into this hole for how long now?"
By E. Bukowsky
DI Jack Lennon's life is a shambles. He is a widower and disgraced cop whose career is in limbo; he has little money to support himself and his nine-year-old daughter, Ellen. Lennon is addicted to painkillers and alcohol, and walks with an uneven gait after sustaining serious injuries in a shootout with a fellow officer. As if all this were not enough to destroy Lennon's peace of mind, an old flame contacts him with a bizarre story that he dismisses out of hand. When she is found bludgeoned to death, DCI Serena Flanagan zeroes in on Lennon as her prime suspect.

Neville is a master of Irish noir. "The Final Silence" is gloomy and violent, but it is also wickedly funny at times. Most of its bitter characters are mired in the past; they cannot free themselves from unhappy memories and misdeeds that continue to haunt them. Although Lennon is flawed in countless ways, he has a heroic side, as well. His love for Ellen is genuine and she reciprocates her father's devotion. Jack hates injustice and will place himself in danger to ensure that predatory criminals get what is coming to them.

"The Final Silence" is intriguingly complex, and Neville's dialogue is profane and caustic. The plot involves an ambitious Belfast politician who will do anything to avoid a whiff of scandal; a psychopath who cannot repress his murderous rage; a recluse who may have committed a series of macabre crimes; and the aforementioned Flanagan, a tough and relentless investigator who is trying to cope with a personal crisis. In "The Final Silence," Neville adeptly deals with such sinister subjects as madness, corruption, betrayal, and murder. Fans of Jack Lennon can only wonder whether this troubled man will find a way to clean up his act before it is too late.

A Pretty Good Character-Driven, Modern day Noirish Irish Mystery!
By Bobbewig
I won't spend time describing the plot of the Final Silence, as this can be read about in the Amazon Book Description above. Rather, my review will focus on my thoughts about the book, which, hopefully, will be of value in deciding whether or not The Final Silence is for you.

Overall, I enjoyed The Final Silence primarily for the mostly complex, well-developed characters Neville has created and for his strong ability to make the reader feel he/she is 'right there' as the mystery is unfolding in modern day Belfast; a city in which the troubles from the past seem to be more dormant than resolved.

I also enjoyed the mystery that involves deeply troubled and disgraced police inspector, Jack Lennon, asked by a former girlfriend to investigate a series of murders she believes was committed by her recently deceased uncle, after she finds her uncle's book that serves to catalog the victims. However, my enjoyment with the plot in The Final Silence lags a considerable distance behind my involvement with the majority of the characters and the sense of time and place. This is because the plot, while interesting and entertaining, offers few thrills and surprises.

I would recommend The Final Silence to readers who enjoy a mystery driven much more by its character development than its plot development.

3 1/2 stars rounded up to 4 stars.

The Darkness Continues
By prisrob
This book, 'The Final Silence', was one of the more bizarre novels I have read. I found it difficult to care about most of the characters. Most of them had some endearing quality, but, all in all, not very likable. All of them have difficult issues, no one seems at all happy, and it was a distressing read. The city of Belfast takes center, and even though we see modern times, old habits still follow.

Rea Carlisle, recently out of work, receives a call from her mother. Her uncle Raymond Drew has died. They had not seen nor heard from him in years. Rea's parents are quite inhibited with any show of emotion, a family trait, which Rea does not follow. She hugs them whenever she sees them. After the funeral, they go to the uncle's home and clear and bag most everything. There is one room which is locked that they cannot get into. Rea has been told she will inherit this house, a place of her own. Determined to get into the room, she uses a sledge hammer and gets through the door. In a drawer of the desk she finds a ledger filled with horror. She calls her mother and father. They, too are horrified, and her father, Stormont politician, Graham Carlisle, says they must get rid of this ledger. If it became public he would be ruined. Thus the story begins.

Rea enlists the help of an old flame, Detective Inspector,Jack Lennon. He has been involved in a murder of a colleague, and he is recovering from hospitalization and recovery. A turn of events puts the spotlight on him, again, and his superior, DCI Serena Flanagan, has her sights on him as a guilty party. Many characters are introduced and become part of this mystery. This novel has a very dark nourish quality to it. I found it disjointed at best, and difficult to get through. Some parts of the novel, concerning DCI Flanagan and her philosophy and practice of the law rang true. She was the most likable character, and I would be interested in reading more with her as the protagonist.

Good Story, Wonderful Prime Character, Felt Like Real Life To Me
By Thomas Helmer
In "The paperhanger", Mr. Burbank sends an "everyman" tradesman into a nagging mystery that begins with a clue that only a wall paper hanger could find. Through his creative plot construction, the paperhanger manages to alienate everyone, but enough slowly return to get the mystery solved. Mr. Burbank invests his prime character with a wonderful self depreciating sense of humor, and along the way weaves recognizable "real life" characters into a mess that only a one armed wall paper hangar can smooth out and get the solution to stick.

It was a very well written book and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It had great depth, mystery and intrigue throughout which kept my interest alive. I particularly enjoyed the Epilogue which provided insight into the future lives of the main characters.

About the Author
Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the 'naughty parts' of books first, looks for a dirty joke in everything, and thinks to this day that the "Little House on the Prairie" books should have been steamier. After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write books of her own - stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty and strong, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

CHAPTER ONE

At Fred’s subtle touch, my breath caught in my throat.

A small moan of delight escaped me, and I clutched at his sleeve. “Do it again,” I whispered.

He moved his fingers over the spot once more, his breath coming hard with excitement. I had to bite my lip to keep from crying out with sheer pleasure.

“What do you think?” he murmured huskily in my ear.

Oh God, I was in danger of losing control if he didn’t stop.

“Jackie?”

“Classic Puuc,” I said with a gasp.

“Do you think so?” He touched the monitor again and zoomed in on the area in question.

Good archaeology was better than the best orgasm. My fingers spasmed against his sleeve in excitement. “Oh my God! Stop! Stop right there! Look!”

Fred froze the cursor and turned the monitor to me.

I stared at the blocky red shape on the screen of the radar equipment with utter delight. “Definite classic Puuc! Look,” I said, pointing at the edge of the red blob with my fingernail. “Thick, heavy veneer stone with a clean edge. These lighter spots around the side suggest doorways cut into the rock. I bet if we dug it up, we’d find a stone relief to rival that of Chichén Itza.” I leaned over the monitor, my heart slamming in my chest. “Can we pan out to the rest of the jungle?”

Fred leaned over me, plastering his groin against my backside. My co-archaeologist was the possessor of one raging boner. Bad idea to lean over the table.

“Jackie,” he murmured in my ear. “Forget about the dig for a moment. I need to talk to you.”

I clamped my thighs together tightly, trying to rid myself of the unwanted feelings of pleasure. Despite the fact that I didn’t want Fred in the slightest, my cursed succubus body reacted to his touch. I shoved my elbow backward, hard, trying to gut him. “Get off of me,” I said, squirming away.

“We’re finally alone,” Fred said. “I wanted to tell you how I feel.” His young face was alight with desire, his dirty brown ponytail damp with sweat. “No one’s around.”

That had an alarming ring to it. I turned and glanced around and, sure enough, the local workers that we hired to help out around the dig were nowhere to be seen. None of the university team was around, either. That was odd. All the guys at the site were normally so taken with my looks that I couldn’t shake them, no matter what I did. I had an adoring admirer or two following me at all times, even to the port-a-potty.

It really sucked to be supernaturally beautiful.

Fred moved toward me again and caught my hands. “I’ve been holding back for months now, waiting for the right moment.” His hands were sweaty, and a droplet of sweat rolled down his nose and splashed onto my arm. Gross.

“And you think now is a good time? It’s ninety-five degrees in the shade, Fred, and we’re in the jungle. I haven’t showered in four days—and it smells like you haven’t showered for longer.” I wrinkled my nose and tried to jerk my hand away again. Where did everyone go? The deserted grounds should have been crawling with archaeologists.

It gave me the willies.

Fred pressed a fervent kiss to my hand. “You’re so beautiful, Jackie.”

Sigh. “Duh.”

Of course I was beautiful. I was a succubus. We were cursed to have our faces and bodies remolded into that of a man’s ideal fantasy. To think I’d once complained about how mousy my old looks were. I never realized how damned inconvenient it would be to be gorgeous.

“I’ve never met anyone like you.” He continued to kiss my knuckles, pressing moist lips against them.

I doubted this dork met a lot of women, period, much less a succubus. Fred was the type of guy who probably got picked last in gym class and owned a vast library of Dungeons and Dragons books. Not exactly a ladies’ man.

“Fred,” I began. “You do realize that Noah’s going to kick your ass if he sees this.” It was a bluff, of course. Noah—my beautiful Serim lover—might glare sternly at Fred or throw some money around to have Fred removed from camp, but I doubted he’d actually get physical with the guy.

Noah was too elegant for that sort of thing.

But my suitor was shaking his head with passion. “He’s busy right now. And this might be my only chance to show you how I feel.”

I frowned at that. “What do you mean, ‘only chance’?” We were all going to be on this dig for at least another two months.

More of his sweat dripped onto my arms, and I struggled again to break his grip. Why oh why weren’t succubi gifted with super-strength? No one needed it more than a hot immortal girl. Men were compelled to fall in love with my new face, and I’d have happily traded beauty for the ability to punch the hell out of Fred at the moment.

So I used the only other weapon I had available—I pretended to faint, going limp in his arms.

As expected, Fred released my hands to catch me as I went down, and I slapped my open palm against his forehead.

It worked. He collapsed.

I didn’t hit him hard, of course. I doubted I could hit him hard enough to leave a bruise. But his mind shut off with the touch of my hand to his forehead, and he went down for the count.

There was one perk to being a succubus, at least. I could shut down his mind and put him into a deep, dreamless sleep, and then pick through his memories if I wanted to. Not the most handy skill, depending on the situation, and I tried not to use it much, since it tended to backfire in rather spectacular ways. But desperate times call for desperate moves.

I didn’t let him stay unconscious long. Kneeling beside his prostrate body, I touched his forehead to wake him up again, then patted his hand as if I were worried. “Fred? Fred? Are you all right?”

His eyes fluttered open slowly and focused on me. “What … what happened?”

I put on my best concerned expression and squeezed his hand, maybe a little too roughly. “You were leaning in to kiss me, and you passed out,” I lied.

Fred sat up, cradling his head in his free hand. “I did?”

“You did.” I helped him to his feet, then dusted off his shirt. “Fred, I’m not sure but … I think you should go see a doctor.” Step one: lay the trap.

He gave me a confused look. “Why?”

I made my eyes go wide. “Well, you do know that if you pass out when you get an erection, that’s an early warning sign of extremely high blood pressure. And you’re far too young to have that sort of thing happen to you.”

Brushing the sweaty, long hair off his forehead, Fred stared ahead blankly. “I’ve never done that before.” His hand went to his wrist, as if checking his pulse.

“Of course not,” I said sweetly, taking him by the elbow and pointing him toward the Jeep. “I’m sure it’s nothing to be worried about.” Step two: play to the ego. “You’re a healthy, strong man. It’s probably nothing. But just to be safe, don’t you think you should head into Mérida and get yourself checked out?”

“But … the survey equipment … the dig …”

“There’s nothing that can’t wait until the crew returns later tonight.” I pulled my keys out of my pocket and placed them in his hand. “Why don’t you take my Jeep? Go to town, spend the night in air-conditioning, get checked out by the doctor, and come back in a few days. I’ll explain everything to Mr. Gideon.”

“Everything?” Fred swallowed hard.

I took pity on him. “Almost everything.” I shook my finger at him. “And as long as the rest never happens again, it’ll remain our secret.”

Sorta. I planned on complaining long and hard to Mr. Gideon.

In a daze, Fred climbed into the Jeep and started the engine. I tried not to smile too cheerfully as the Jeep disappeared down the dirt road into the jungle. My problem neatly disposed of, I raced back to the GPR equipment to get another glimpse of those red blobs. To think that we had found another set of outlying buildings! We could expand on the dig, perhaps get another grant from the university … my mind raced at the thought.

To my disappointment, Fred’s fall had jostled the computer, and the screen was dark. I tapped the monitor twice before glancing down and seeing the plug hanging out of the socket. A quick replugging showed that I needed a password to reboot the system, a password I didn’t have. I sighed in disgust. So much for that. And without someone to help me move the surface antenna, I couldn’t do any further radar scans until the others returned.

Disgruntled, I packed up the equipment I could and went in search of the rest of the crew. We’d decided to set up in the least thickly forested portion of the ancient grounds of Yuxmal, and workers had cleared even more area to set up the tent city that had been our home for the past few months. A very empty tent city. It was midday, so unless everyone had ran off for an impromptu siesta, the campsite was truly deserted.

What the heck was going on?

The tent I shared with Noah was at the edge of camp, near the base of a massive stone pyramid—the discovery that had started the dig itself. As I approached our tent, I could hear the generator humming and the sound of rotating fans buzzing. I paused outside. The door flap was down, which seemed like a bad idea given the heat and humidity. Inside, I heard a muffled curse.

Noah was here, at least. I put aside my odd foreboding about the camp’s emptiness and ran my long fingernails along the weatherproofed canvas, the sound that passed for a knock in a tent city. “Knock knock.”

“Don’t come in,” Noah barked.

I frowned at the tent wall. “What do you mean, don’t come in?” I lifted the flap and entered anyhow.

My jaw dropped. Noah was clad in nothing but boxer shorts, and beads of sweat trailed down his flat, golden abs. The large folding table that filled the middle of the tent was covered with a paper tablecloth that fluttered in the wake of the rotating fans set at each corner of the tent. Two place settings decorated the table, along with a large covered dish. A row of pale candles was lined up in front of Noah, who held a box of matches in his hand.

“What is all this?” I asked.

“A surprise. Or it was.” He scowled.

I let the flap slide shut behind me and fanned my hand at my face. In the heat, with the humidity, no number of rotating fans could make the tent feel like less of a sauna. It seemed awfully odd to have an elegant dinner set up in the tent, but it looked like that was Noah’s plan. I was torn between thinking he was sweet or totally mad. “Where did everyone at camp go?”

“They went to town. Paid vacation day. A vacation day that I paid for,” he said irritably as he pulled another match out of the box. “Fred was supposed to keep you busy for another hour.”

I snorted and moved to the far end of the table, where a chair was set out. “If by ‘keep me busy’ you mean try to molest me, I’d say he finished early.”

Noah ran the match along the side of the box, and a small flame flared to life. He leaned toward the closest candle, and the match abruptly sputtered, then blew out, from the breeze of the fan. He swore again and pulled out another match.

Well, now. Noah seemed a little crankier than usual, but I blamed it on the bright blue in his eyes. The closer we got to the full moon, the more moody he became as the curse came over him and his need for sex rose.

Of course, the sight of those blue eyes and that delicious, bare sweaty chest gave me another idea—a rather naughty one. I moved to his side, my finger tracing one runnel of sweat down his chest. I dipped my finger in the damp bead and met his eyes, then tasted the droplet, a blatant suggestion if there ever was one.

“Not now, Jackie,” he said impatiently.

With a sigh, I dropped my hands, returned to the far side of the table, and sat down so I wouldn’t be tempted to touch him again. Another symptom of the full-moon curse—Noah was completely and utterly uninterested in sex for the days preceding the full moon, upon which we’d stay in the tent the entire day and have sex until he passed out. I gave him a bright smile. “When are you due, so we can get back to normal and I can get laid?”

He pulled out another match, glaring at it with all the hatred in the world. “The moon is full in two days.”

Well, thank God for that. I did a little fast math in my head. We’d had sex yesterday morning and I would be due tomorrow morning. If I had to wait another day after that I’d be miserable as hell, but I wouldn’t die from it. An overdue succubus was an exceedingly horny one, so I’d have to avoid the other men in the camp for the day, or I’d have the men trailing me like I was the Pied Piper of Hamlin. “That day can’t get here soon enough,” I murmured. Just the thought of not having sex for another two days made me crave it, and I crossed my legs under the table.

Noah looked over at me, a hint of a frown marring the line of his eyebrows. The scent of sulfur grew strong in the small tent as he tried to light another match.

“Don’t worry about the candles,” I said. “They’re giving me a headache.”

His jaw was set in a stubborn line that I recognized about once a month. “Fine.” He put down the matches and placed the candles back in an orderly row along the table. “What were you saying about Fred?”

I glanced at the covered tray, my mouth watering as I wondered what was underneath. Was it someone’s birthday? My taste buds gave a little thrill at the thought of birthday cake and ice cream, though no ice cream would survive this heat. Maybe chocolate, to take the edge off my desire. Noah knew that I loved to eat. “Fred confessed undying love for me,” I said, distracted by the tray and my rumbling stomach. It had been a few hours since I’d eaten breakfast, and lunch sounded rather tasty now. “Though I promised him that I wouldn’t say anything to Mr. Gideon.” I gave Noah a pointed look. “Consider yourself out of the know, Mr. Gideon. And don’t worry. I used my Suck powers to draw him off and convinced him to visit town.”

Noah gave a little shake of his head. “Jackie, we’ve had this conversation before. You need to be careful around the men at camp.”

My jaw dropped. Careful?

Careful?

Me?

Steamed, I grabbed a steak knife off the table. With my other hand, I took off my dirty baseball cap and shook down one of my long, bright red braids. I held the braid out from my head at a straight angle and in fast, jerky motions I sawed at the base of my braid and hacked the entire thing off, then tossed it down on the table.

Noah rolled his eyes at my dramatic show.

“Watch,” I said, crossing my arms over my chest.

Sure enough, less than a minute later, I felt the hair follicles on my scalp slither and the familiar tingling that told me my hair was growing back. I grabbed a handful of the sheared ends and watched in disgust as they grew, my hair pouring down my shoulders and over my shirt, returning to the lengthy, flame-red curls.

“Do you see this?” I jerked at my T-shirt. “I’m wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt, cargo shorts, and a baseball cap. Not exactly seductress material.”

“Zane’s shirt, I noticed.”

Grrr. He was missing the point entirely! “What I’m trying to remind you of is that no matter what I do, I can’t disguise how I look. I’ve shaved my head. I’ve worn thick glasses. I’ve done everything short of wearing a ski mask, and it’s no use. I could go out in a trash bag and someone would still hit on me.”

“Jackie—”

“You know,” I went on, angrily rebraiding my “new” hair, “I thought this dig would be good for my career. I could finally set myself up as a serious archaeologist. But it’s like I’m the Hooters girl at the church social! The men leer at me constantly. Someone tries to cop a feel if I so much as bend over. And all the women on the team hate me because they think I’m blowing you just to get you to sponsor the dig.”

“You are blowing me,” he interrupted with a hint of a smile.

“Not to further my career,” I bellowed. “Remember that whole ‘have to have sex every two days’ thing? Hello? Succubus?”

He gave me a patient look. “I wouldn’t be out in the jungles of Yucatán spending a small fortune on sonar—”

“Radar—”

“Radar equipment if it wasn’t for you. So they do have a point.”

My eyes narrowed. “You are so not helping your case right now, buddy.”

Noah chuckled, showing me a glimpse of the good-natured, strong protector that I usually adored. He moved to my end of the table and pulled me up into his arms. “Poor Jackie. I’m sorry this isn’t turning out like you want.” His warm hand stroked my braids and down my back.

My bad mood rapidly dwindled now that I was pressed against his hard, sweaty body, and I slid my hands up and down his bare, damp skin. He felt so good against me. Really good. It reminded me that I was due for the Itch in a short time, so I reluctantly pulled away. “Unless you want to make out on the floor, maybe we shouldn’t touch.”

I wanted him to protest, to kiss me senseless and prove me wrong, but all he said was “You’re right,” and released me. Spoilsport.

I sighed. I hated the days up to the full moon.

“I brought you a few presents from town,” he said, returning to the other end of the table.

Sitting back down, I clapped my hands in delight. “Edible things?” In this part of Mexico you could get a lot of standard stuff from the big Walmart in Mérida or the local tedejon, but I missed the small luxuries, like Pringles or my favorite shampoo. Noah was constantly bringing me boxes of treats as a result. Last week it was foil-wrapped Ding Dongs, which I tore through in about five minutes.

Succubi weren’t known for their self-control when it came to food. Hedonists for the win.

Noah smiled at my delighted expression. “Part of your present is edible, yes.” He disappeared under the paper tablecloth and reappeared a moment later with a large cardboard box. The words “Pop-Tarts” was printed across the side of the box.

I squealed. “Oh my God! Pop-Tarts! A whole case!”

“I had them special ordered for you in Mérida. They’re chocolate.” At my second squeal of delight, he chuckled. “Try not to eat them all in one day.”

I eyed the box with hungry, avid eyes. “They might last two days.” Maybe three, if I paced myself. It was so hard to find chocolate Pop-Tarts in this part of Mexico.

A radar discovery and Pop-Tarts. This day just got better and better.

Noah seemed pleased, his eyes so blue they glowed in his tanned face. “I never thought I’d see a woman get so turned on over a package.” His voice had dropped to a huskier octave, showing that he wasn’t totally immune to my charms just yet.

Encouraged, I leaned over the table, my voice turning into a purr. “Show me your package, and I’ll show you an even more turned-on woman.”

His eyes flashed and I recognized the interest there, fighting the lethargy that always set over him before the full moon. “Your other present first,” he said.

“Whatever floats your boat,” I breathed, clamping my thighs together so they’d stop quivering with excitement.

Hot diggity, I was going to get laid today after all!

He leaned over the table, placing his hand on the dome of the silver platter. I couldn’t wait to find out what was underneath. This was why he’d sent everyone away from camp to be alone with me—the reason behind the big production.

“If that’s a milk shake under there, they’re going to have to pry me off of you with a crowbar,” I warned, my eyes glued to the tray.

He lifted the lid.

A tiny turquoise box with a bow lay in the center of the plate. It looked like … a ring box.

“Shit,” I blurted.

Combination of Great Laughs and Steamy Passion (B+ Grade)
By Katie Babs
Six months ago Jackie Brighton's life changed both for the better and the worse. She became an immortal, a drop-dead gorgeous succubus, who every few days needs her sexual itch scratched before it grows out of control and she ends up have sex with the first man she sees. But for the moment she has one man who is more than willing to help her. He's the fallen angel, Noah Gideon, and one of her masters. Her other master, the dark, leather wearing vampire Zane, left Jackie for her own safety. Even though she loves Noah, she misses Zane desperately. While on an archeological dig in the Yucatan Jungle, Noah asks her a very important question that scares her to death. Noah wants forever with only Jackie even after being alive for four thousand years. Jackie isn't sure about such a commitment since she still has unresolved feelings for Zane. Noah is devastated by her response, and before Jackie can explain to him, they are both placed under arrest by the angelic Serim Council.

Jackie may be put to death and Noah punished for their actions. But, Jackie is given a way out when the archangel Gabriel makes a pact with her. Gabriel wants a halo that holds an incredible amount of power from a former archangel. This archangel is Joachim, whose spirit has possessed Jackie's porn actress, succubus, best friend Remy. This is a way for Jackie to save Remy and possibly herself and Noah.

Along with Ethan, a seven foot virgin council enforcer who's Jackie's backup, they venture into the dangerous vampire underworld where the Queen of the vampires is holding Zane, who must do her every bidding. Now Jackie has to figure out how to free Zane from the Queen's clutches, as well as save the world from both power hungry angels and vampires, and keep her itch from eating her alive. And let's not forget the love triangle Jackie finds herself in between Noah and Zane, who may have been using her all along to replace someone they lost in both their distant pasts

Where do I start with My Fair Succubi (Succubus Diaries, Book #3)? This third book by Jill Myles is rip-roaring hilarious. Jill raises things up a notch as Jackie navigates the supernatural world in her own endearing, bumbling way. Jackie has come into her own in this book, and she takes the bull by the horns to speak. This time she's in control and refuses to be pushed around. Even when it comes to her succubus itch, she decides who she'll be with.

I cannot tell you the number of times I laughed while reading My Fair Succubi. Jill has really grown as a writer. The action is kept up at a fast pace, the dialogue is crisp and the sex scenes are very risqué and naughty. There's one scene where Jackie needs to pleasure herself because she's waited so long to have sex. And since she's in a tough place at the moment, she turns to Zane, who gives her a helping hand, so to speak, where my own eyes bugged out because I'd never read such a thing before. But it works perfectly, and may just be one of the steamiest sex scenes I've read all year.

Jill introduces us to Ethan, a sweet heroic warrior, who is like a fish out of water when it comes to Jackie. He becomes as important to the story as Noah and Zane are. I've placed my claim on Ethan, so move along. And when it comes to both Noah and Zane, there's a twist that you won't see coming that will leave the reader stunned as Jackie was.

My Fair Succubi is an overall fun read that I would recommend to anyone. This is one book that has a great combination of laughs, and adorable characters with enough steamy passion around every corner for any romance genre enthusiast.

A Sexy Fun Book!
By Melissa Books and Things
This is actually the third book in the succubi series by Jill Myles. Even if you haven't read the first two books like I haven't (yet) you still can follow this book and still feel as if you know what is going on. Granted, it makes you want to know more of the back story, but you aren't lost either. Jackie was turned into a succubus by both Noah and Zane who are now her immortal lovers and masters. And even though Jackie is a succubus who needs sex to survive every couple of days, she isn't a wanton woman. She wants to be faithful to her two masters and lovers.

As Jackie accepts her life as a succubus she finds that an old enemy has possessed her best friend and everyone from the Serim Council (which Noah follows), the archangel Gabriel, and the Vampire queen (Zane is her minion) wants her to collect the possessor in the form of a halo of great power. She has to figure out how to collect it without harming her friend. Jackie is also aided by a hulking nephilim who is a virgin warrior and protector sent by Noah and is SO not into the succubi lifestyle. She also finds herself working with Zane and another vampire to collect this power. Of course, things in Jackie's life never go as planned. She bumbles her way through the problems that foil all her plans while she finds the truth of why she was turned as well as the reason Noah and Zane hate each other. Does she win? Does she have to chose between the two men? Can she? Can you get through this book without laughing? Okay, I'll answer that last one... No. ;) The other questions you will just have to find out for yourself by reading this book.

This book is full of fun, sexy-time, and an interesting adventure. The personalities in this book make it interesting and Jackie herself keeps it sweet. I give this book 4 stars. I recommend it to anyone looking for a bit of lol'ing with their reading. I can't wait to get the other 2 previous to this book and read the next one in this series!

Loved It!!!!
By Mama Bear
I absolutely LOVE this series! I was so excited for this book and I had huge expectations. I was not disappointed! My Fair Succubi is more of an emotional rollercoaster than the previous 2 books and I felt so many highs and lows right along with the main character. I loved the ending and I am so happy with her choice! I can't wait for more books from Jill Myles' Succubs Diaries and her new Midnight Liasions series.

Fast-Paced and Charming
By H. Bok
*Margaret Dashwood and the Enchanted Atlas* is the second novel in this series, but either can be read as a freestanding story, and I would advise the reader new to Beth Deitchman to start here. In this tale, Margaret Dashwood, the youngest of the three sisters in *Sense and Sensibility,* has grown into a young woman, the only sister still unmarried. The action opens with a return to Norland Park, where Miss Dashwood, a talented young sorceress, recovers many of her sorcerer father’s magical books and documents. There she also meets the enchanting Mr. Ellsworth and falls in love.

The action moves to London and then to Devonshire, where Miss Dashwood finds herself among a whole coven of sorcerers and a world of magical skullduggery. There is much more magic in this second novel, which I felt rounded the story out better than the first. I enjoyed the writing style very much, despite some modernisms (e.g., when her health is enquired after, our heroine ought to say, “Thank you, I am well” instead of “I am fine.”) and some glaring errors of period authenticity (tea comes *after* dinner in the Regency, not before!). The narrative and most of the dialogue are charming.

As for the plot, it held few surprises for the reader of *Sense and Sensibility,* but with such delightful, original characters and so many twists, I scarcely minded. Purists may object to certain aspects of the story being derived from a film version of S&S instead of the novel, but I didn’t mind.

I do hope the author plans to turn Mary Crawford and Jane Fairfax into sorceresses one day!

Fresh, fun, fantastic
By Avid Reader
If you like the world of Jane Austen and you like a dash of fantasy in your fiction, this is an entertaining short novel about the youngest Dashwood sister, of the Sense and Sensibility Dashwoods, and her adventures as a budding sorceress. Throw in a dollop of whimsy, a pinch of romance, and a substantial serving of historical detail, and you have a syllabub of Regency-era fun.

What separates Deitchman's Austen-inspired works from the pack is her attention to detail, in language, character, and setting. Austen devotees will recognize the thematic underpinnings of Sense and Sensibility in Margaret's story, and may see parallels between Margaret's love life and Marianne's.

While acknowledging the roots of her story, Deitchman manages to make something wildly new with her inclusion of a faintly Potterish magical system, a minor mystery, and a cast of vividly drawn characters (my favorite was Miss Cottlebury).

Fresh, fun, fantastic!

C'est magnifique!
By Amazon Customer
This novel is like a magic potion: a main character à la Jane Austen from Sense and Sensibility, a magical adventure circa Harry Potter that I'm pretty sure Miss Rowling would approve, and the introduction of French spells. Voila - Donc élégant! As the second book in this Regency Magic series, the author's writing greatly improved. Clearer, Stronger, Better. Oooo la la! Can't wait to see what comes next.

10 Principles of Architecture, by Ruth Slavid

Great buildings, like great art, contain something that is impossible to define or pin down. But that greatness, in almost all cases, overlays the principles set out in this book. While one cannot guarantee that a building will be great, if all the principles are followed, you will avoid the pitfalls to which too many are subject.

This new title in the10 Principles series provides clear explanations of each tenet along with useful illustrations to help the reader visualize what is being discussed. The author assumes no background on the subject, but an interest in learning more about what goes into making a building work. An experienced writer on this subject, Ruth Slavid provides a useful and illuminating primer to the field that is accessible to students of architecture, architects or architectural historians or anyone interested in the principles behind the buildings that surround them.

The rules of architecture have been discussed since the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius coined the trilogy firmitas, utilitas and venustas, most commonly translated as being solid, useful and beautiful. Put simply, this means that a building should stand up and endure, that it should serve its function, and that it should give pleasure to its users and the wider community.

Contents: Principle 1: Place; Principle 2: Structure; Principle 3: Function and Flexibility; Principle 4: Comfort; Principle 5: Sustainability; Principle 6: Legibility; Principle 7: Light; Principle 8: Sound; Principle 9: Surface; Principle 10: Details.
