Fast-Paced and Charming
By H. Bok
*Margaret Dashwood and the Enchanted Atlas* is the second novel in this series, but either can be read as a freestanding story, and I would advise the reader new to Beth Deitchman to start here. In this tale, Margaret Dashwood, the youngest of the three sisters in *Sense and Sensibility,* has grown into a young woman, the only sister still unmarried. The action opens with a return to Norland Park, where Miss Dashwood, a talented young sorceress, recovers many of her sorcerer father’s magical books and documents. There she also meets the enchanting Mr. Ellsworth and falls in love.
The action moves to London and then to Devonshire, where Miss Dashwood finds herself among a whole coven of sorcerers and a world of magical skullduggery. There is much more magic in this second novel, which I felt rounded the story out better than the first. I enjoyed the writing style very much, despite some modernisms (e.g., when her health is enquired after, our heroine ought to say, “Thank you, I am well” instead of “I am fine.”) and some glaring errors of period authenticity (tea comes *after* dinner in the Regency, not before!). The narrative and most of the dialogue are charming.
As for the plot, it held few surprises for the reader of *Sense and Sensibility,* but with such delightful, original characters and so many twists, I scarcely minded. Purists may object to certain aspects of the story being derived from a film version of S&S instead of the novel, but I didn’t mind.
I do hope the author plans to turn Mary Crawford and Jane Fairfax into sorceresses one day!

Fresh, fun, fantastic
By Avid Reader
If you like the world of Jane Austen and you like a dash of fantasy in your fiction, this is an entertaining short novel about the youngest Dashwood sister, of the Sense and Sensibility Dashwoods, and her adventures as a budding sorceress. Throw in a dollop of whimsy, a pinch of romance, and a substantial serving of historical detail, and you have a syllabub of Regency-era fun.
What separates Deitchman's Austen-inspired works from the pack is her attention to detail, in language, character, and setting. Austen devotees will recognize the thematic underpinnings of Sense and Sensibility in Margaret's story, and may see parallels between Margaret's love life and Marianne's.
While acknowledging the roots of her story, Deitchman manages to make something wildly new with her inclusion of a faintly Potterish magical system, a minor mystery, and a cast of vividly drawn characters (my favorite was Miss Cottlebury).
Fresh, fun, fantastic!

C'est magnifique!

This novel is like a magic potion: a main character à la Jane Austen from Sense and Sensibility, a magical adventure circa Harry Potter that I'm pretty sure Miss Rowling would approve, and the introduction of French spells. Voila - Donc élégant! As the second book in this Regency Magic series, the author's writing greatly improved. Clearer, Stronger, Better. Oooo la la! Can't wait to see what comes next.
