A Mystery ?

This is another Florida Keys mystery. There are many of these and they are similar in more ways than location. So, this book was unique only in the identity of the good guys and the bad guys. OOPS, this book also included some "action" in Cuba and the waters between FL and Cuba. But the book served just to fill time when I needed/wanted something requiring no thinking, just giving me something to do before falling asleep. The story involves THE local rich family, originally from Cuba; their sons remind one of George W and Jeb. Then there is a cute young lady who is a lawyer and her boss who is in the employ of the rick family, so despite a lot of effort, she accomplishes little. Someone who is suspected of killing of somebody is lost and the immediate suspects are the George W and Jeb of the rich family. Lots of activity follows, but they barely catch the crook ... and then he escapes. This book did occupy time before I went to sleep, but failed to be a thriller, or even a mystery.

Loved it!

I loved it! It seems like a lot of romances have the "damsel in distress" thing going on which is not always a bad thing, but you will definitely not find that here. The female characters in these stories are very capable of kicking butt and taking names if you mess with them and especially their families. It kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Definitely a must read.

Intriguing and well-written saga that kept my interest from beginning to end. Interesting and well-fleshed out characters. The page-turning plot had me pulling for the good guys all along. Very enjoyable read, recommended to all who like shifter or paranormal tales.

Cordelia is the typical rebel teenager, if dyeing your hair is being very rebel, it is if your mother is one of those plastic woman that live to show off how much money she has. Cordelia- nicknamed Del - can’t stand her mother and her perfect husband with his perfect children and what they think is important. She only wants to have her own money, graduating high school and getting a job somewhere far from her family. But that all may change when she meets Rhett Tressler, the new resident in the small town Lightfood, Texas. Rhett is the kind of boy that people see as trouble because he drives a motorcycle and doesn’t have a filter between his brain to his mouth and he seems interested right away in Cordelia.

I loved this book and I’m not usually a contemporary romance reader, but I’m glad that I picked this one. Cordelia is unsatisfied with her life, she’s not one to live the luxury life and can’t stand what her mother became after marrying Michael. When she meets Rhett, of course she is impressed with his liiks but she also admired the way he acted so confident and said whatever he wanted, she felt compelled to hang around him and his family. His family was everything that hers wans’t.

I loved Rhett’s family too. They were messy, noisy and happy, things that a lot people may wish inside their own homes, a big family that make their meals together and pick on each other healthily. Del learned a lot with Rhett’s family which she felt she had to do something about her own family. But Cordelia wasn’t the only one to learn a few things. Rhett learned how to face his own issues, and to always, and to always believe that he can do something good for his future.

Great book, I guess one of the reasons that I loved this book was that I know about depression, because I also deal with it every day, and I also have crazy colors in my hair, so I guess I understand the characters better ,even though my hair is not an act of rebellion.

Interesting Read

Some books tell the exact same story every time you open them. Others most definitely do not.

The creative premise caught my attention immediately. It was just as much fun to read as I thought it would be! What I liked the most about it was how easily it shifted between describing things that kids find humorous and tossing in a few jokes that were definitely intended for the adults who are reading this aloud. There were a few words that might be too difficult for young readers, but this is also something that I’d give to kids who are slightly older or who have strong vocabularies.

Figuring out the most appropriate age recommendation wasn’t easy. There is nothing here that is inappropriate for kids in early elementary school, but the writing style and types of humor that were used used seemed to be more geared towards adults and slightly older kids. I ended up choosing the younger age range in order to include as many readers as possible. Had the intended audience been more clear, I would have easily given this book a much higher rating.

One of the things I like the most about trying new authors is being surprised with what they’ve created. This was my first introduction to Mr. Tillemans work. His writing style is playful and conversational which is a good choice for the age range he seems to be targeting. It’s the sort of thing I’d feel just as comfortable sharing with my nieces and nephews as I would with their great-grandparents.

I’d recommend Invisible Children’s Book Instruction Manual to anyone who has ever grown even slightly weary of reading the same thing over and over again at bedtime.

Fresh Idea

I first discovered the work of Nicholas Tillemans with his collection of short stories, Acetone Enema. Mr Tillemans writes unique and quirky stories, seemingly with ease and his mind truly seems to be a dark and twisted place with characters being born and culled on a daily basis. The darkness inside Mr Tillemans drifts onto the pages of his books and fills our minds with the gift of gore-filled dreams.

So it's refreshing to see something completely out of the ordinary (or, in the ordinary, I suppose!) Mr Tillemans has now given us an instruction manual for the most elusive of bedtime stories. He has given us a way to read the fabled invisible children's book!

Seriously though, this book is a really nice idea and it really gives Nick Tillemans a chance to show his softer side. Nick has really taken some criticism for the type of writing he puts out on the market and this is a nice way to see that he's a really lovely family man who spends time with his son – something which cannot be said of that many parents anymore, sadly.

It's a great way for adults to have a quick and enjoyable read and learn something to do with their child, why read a bog standard visible book when you can delight your child with an invisible one?! Your child will be seriously impressed with the idea that his/her parents can tell a story they can't see and it gives you a bit of special bonding time in your busy day.

Adorable!

It's not often that I read instruction manuals but this one sounded too good to pass up. It did not disappoint. In this thorough instruction manual for invisible books, Tillemans walks us through his process in creating a story with his son that is born from the imagination and takes a new turn with each night's events. Ideal for the 3 to 4 year old in your life, the invisible book is the best of bedtime stories because it engages you and your child in an imaginative world where only your child knows what comes next. This 25 page manual gives all of the best tips for starting this bonding process over reading an invisible book and how to stay on track when you get lost in your imagination.

I would highly recommend this book to parents and future parents alike, because what could be more fun than diving into the imagination of your youngster while teaching them the love of reading?

This is a page turner that I definitely recommend! This book is written where you end every chapter wishing you didn't switch topics in the next but are immediately pulled into the next situation. Unsuspecting teens are thrown together and cajoled into going on a mission to save their world from war. They must steal a dragon egg from a tribe of powerful dragons. It's not that simple though, woven into the plot creatively are ties to the magical world of dragons, one of the teens in the unsuspecting group is murdering off it's members, strange alliances are made, intricate battles are fought, identities are hidden, and secrets disclosed and kept. Interestingly, everyone is defined by the color of their eyes and this just adds another element of surprise as you read this amazing fun and exciting book. The book features both strong female and male characters. There are tribes of humans and tribes of dragons. Each has it's own characteristics (as well as insults). By the end, the characters had grown so much I wasn't sure who I liked the most. The characters learn as they go along about being unsuspectingly trusting and the ramifications of not making a well thought out decision. They acknowledge their faults but not necessarily with change occurring. It is so clever! I wish the next one was available.

The Stolen Dragon of Quanx: The Eyes Trilogy by Becca Mann is the first novel in The Eyes Trilogy. When you begin reading it you will get a feeling of yourself being pulled into a fantastic fantasy world. It will grab you from the beginning and you will find yourself just turning page after page after page and turning the pages until the end. There are twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. After you get to the end you are going to be asking for the next novel. And then the next. This is a great fantasy and I know you will enjoy it just as I did. I gave it 5 stars but it deserves more than that. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I look for more from Becca Mann.

I need the next one!!

I wish I could talk about spoilers in this book review! There are soooo many! Pay attention readers, every other page has a clue. And whatever you think is the outcome - won't be it! There is something for everyone here. You want the kids to steal the egg, but then you don't! You don't want Kale's real identity discovered, you want to know who is the murderer amongst them is, you want to know what the dragon is going to show her next, but you are afraid to know! All the descriptions are so clever and meaningful. The characters change and evolve and end up being not who they seem. There are heart wrenching moments with outcomes you do not want to occur. Then it ends and you need the next one asap!

An important book for the adoption community

Already a Laura Dennis Fan (Adopted Reality, A Memoir) and a lifelong fan of therapy, I picked up Adoption Therapy with high hopes, and was not disappointed.

A brief glance at the topics, listed on the back cover, offers a sense the contents and tone of the book, which is a refreshing break from the preachy tone of many of these books. (It isn’t that I don’t love these books, it is that I often find myself parsing fact from opinion).

One of the things that separates this offering from some others is how it ties together some well researched, documented and foot-noted conclusions. At the same time, the book is not so academically oriented as to be a stumbling block to the reader. There is a wide range of included topics -everything from sealed records to a chapter on “conceived by rape.” (And even this vignette is told in a highly readable, matter-of-fact way).

The timing of this book could not be better. As more states modernize their legal requirements and adoptees gradually gain access to original birth certificates, more people will find themselves looking for some help in dealing with new information available to them. Adoption Therapy is the only book I’ve found that begins a roadmap towards that type of help. As such, it would be a great companion to many of the standards and classics, biographies and memoirs out there.

“My purpose here is not to describe how to work with these issues…but to suggest where to look for the work that needs to be done.” This quote, from the section by Karen Caffrey, LPC, JD , summarizes the over-all point of the book..all the answers are not contained inside but readers will soon find themselves asking some “new” questions.

We (those touched by adoption in some way) might be spending so much time addressing legal matters (custody, sealed records, available of social services to newly organized families) that we forget to take care of ourselves mentally and emotionally) a fact driven home by several of the contributors to the anthology.

I found the book to be edifying from an emotional and educational standpoint, as an adoptee, as a daughter and as a mom. Over-all it is a thought provoking, mind-expanding book which should be read by people who are interested in adoption issues, whether they are interested in therapy or not.

This book is wonderful in it's offer for healing as well as no longer feeling so alone. The essay's offered many different viewpoints as well. I know it's difficult for some people to read as they would rather not know the truth of how some adoptee's feel. My hope is that many people will read all of the essays with an open mind and heart. Even if you are not adopted chances are you know someone who is, and this book would for sure help you to understand them better as well as offers you insight as to how to be a helpful friend to them.
I hope to see libraries carrying this for educational purposes as well!!

As an adoptive parent, an adoption coach, a proponent of acknowledging the realities of adoption, as well as an author who writes about adoption and family issues, I eagerly anticipated the anthology, Adoption Therapy. It did not disappoint.

Most of the stories are based on the Closed Adoption experience. But the lessons learned have great value not only for adult adoptees and their families but also for those adopting now as well. With raw honesty, they reveal the painful costs of secrecy, shame and disconnection from identity and birth family. They tell of loyalty binds in which adoptees felt compelled to choose valuing their adoptive families at the cost of denying their interest in their origins and birth families. Some adoptees were fed outright lies. Adoptees tell how they floundered without adequate empathy, validation and support for the profound demands that adoption placed on them. Parents and professionals alike, delivered insufficient support. Choosing to see only the benefits adoption offered, they turned a blind eye and responded through rose-colored glasses. Yes, many benefits accrue to a child adopted into a loving adoption-attuned home. But too often, inadequate preparation, education and support is provided. As a result, these adoptees experienced great challenges in learning how to navigate life as an adoptee.

Adoption Therapy unmasks the myth of adoption as the "perfect" solution AND offers insights and strategies for solutions. While the current trends in adoption practice move towards more openness, cultural resistance persists as well as cultural denial of the emotional and identity costs adoption creates.

Many of the personal stories shared in Adoption Therapy, allow us to peek behind the veil of personal privacy to learn of the private struggles that adoptees confront. Often they struggle/d without support from therapists, friends, and sadly occasionally without the empathy and understanding of their adoptive parents.
This ignorance must be remedied. Parents, therapists, adoptive parents must become thoroughly immersed in the reality of adoption grief, loss/identity issues and the neurobiological effects that result from adverse prenatal experiences. Our culture must wake up to the realities and make the appropriate changes to support adoptees, birth parents, and their families. Adoption Therapy offers a wonderful tool for opening, minds, hearts and spirits so that when adoption is the choice, it can be a gentler, more affirming experience for the adoptee.
