great mystery with an eerie setting

Sweet Unrest is a standalone read that will appeal to fans of reads that feel eerie, and have a healthy mixture of ghost story and voodoo magic. I loved the plantation setting that author Lisa Maxwell chose for Sweet Unrest. It was the perfect place for this tale to take place. I’m going to do my best to not give anything away because that is half the fun of this mystery. There are so many different layers and unknowns that come to light throughout the story, and I loved watching everything unfold bit by bit for the main character, Lucy.
The cast of characters were as rich and complex as was the scenery and landscape of New Orleans. I loved Mama Legba, Chloe, Piers and Alex. Lucy’s family kind of faded into the background for me, but I didn’t dislike them. They just weren’t really the focus of this story. The focus came through Lucy’s dreams and her trying to piece together the puzzle they presented.
Past and Present swirl together in Sweet Unrest. Sometimes it came in predictable ways and sometimes things were totally unpredictable. I loved it because it was always just enough to keep me on my toes. There were a couple of little snafus that I still don’t understand, or wish were explained a little better and that was all that was holding me back from a higher rating. (like with a certain character that shows up at the end to help and suddenly knows everything that has been going on. If you have read the book, let me know and we can talk.)
The romance was sweet and heartbreaking all at the same time. It just was never the focal point for me as a reader. I was way more wrapped up in the mystery. I liked the romance and I think the ending was very fitting, but Sweet Unrest was a lot more for me than just a simple romance. (even though there really was nothing simple about Lucy and Alex.) Sweet Unrest is all about the story. I really appreciated the research that the author did on Voodoo. I thought it really added a level of authority to her writing. I want to meet Mama Legba and have her read me. Voodoo + a chilling New Orleans setting that grows in the creep factor as the story goes on + a fresh and interesting mystery = a complex book that is sure to delight ya readers.

Sweet Unrest is packed with atmosphere, mystery, romance and a touch of creepy.

“After spending almost twenty years as a professor in Chicago, my father had gotten the chance of a lifetime– to curate and direct Le Ciel Doux, an antebellum sugar plantation outside of New Orleans.”
And so begins chapter one of Lucy’s adventure in the heat and humidity of the deep south. Sweet Unrest is packed with atmosphere, mystery, and a touch of creepy.
Lucy is hoping to convince her parents to let her return for her senior year in Chicago where she plans to continue graduate and then pursue a career in photography. The only problem with her plan is that the spirits in New Orleans have something else in mind for Lucy.
“People walk around this world every day with more damage to they souls than you can imagine. They take that pain and hurt with them on their journey. It effect who they gonna be next.” – Mama Legba
It’s those damaged souls that introduce Lucy to a world of voodoo, reincarnation, ghosts, loss, and love.
The writing of Sweet Unrest is haunting and beautiful. The story is full of atmosphere and has a slight gothic quality to it. The only downside for me was the ending was just okay. The story is resolved and an epilogue is included at the end but for me I didn’t feel a huge since of resolution at the end. There are still questions I have about Lucy and where she goes from here. Does she continue to see Mama Legba? I’m hoping that there is a book two in the future for Lucy.
Overall I really enjoyed Sweet Unrest by Lisa Maxwell and would recommend it for those looking for a YA paranormal book that combines mystery and romance with the haunting atmosphere of New Orleans.

Creepy and dark, but slow

Sweet Unrest takes place in the south of Louisiana during the present time with flashes of the past. It's about a girl named Lucy, who gets caught up in a dilemma with ghosts, witches, voodoo, and a bad spirit who is out to get her. While I enjoyed the mysteriousness and eerie side of the story, I could not connect with the main character.
Of all the stories I have read, Lucy has got to be one of the most dense characters I have read about. She acts so naïve and in denial of situations when she had the proof standing right in front of her. I figured out pretty much what the love interest, Alexandre was and the whole situation right from the beginning. It doesn't take rocket science to put two and two together, but no it had to drag on and on for Lucy to figure out what was happening. I got really bored because the story was going no where and I just wanted to continue on with it.
Even Alexandre seemed pretty bland. I did not really feel the connection between them because 1) they were both kind of boring characters, 2) they were both so secretive with each other that it felt like the relationship was being forced. Maybe had they been more open, they could had have a better relationship. 3) Alexandre is a ghost, so that pretty much left them with no chemistry. They couldn't even hold hands! I felt her have a connection with her friend's boyfriend Piers, more than she did with Alexandre. That's kind of sad since they did not even like each other in that way.
The only thing that kept me from stopping the book was the overall atmosphere of it. I really liked the attention to detail the author gave of New Orleans, the cottage plantation they lived in, and the whole voodoo dark magic. There were parts when they were doing dark magic that had me spooked. Those parts had me reeled in even though it was a little scary. I also liked Mama Legba. She was the good voodoo witch who had her moments of hilarity and warned Lucy of the dangers that were out there.
Overall, this was a good read. It had its bad moments, but the magical aspect is what kept me in. The ending I felt was pretty spot on. It left hope for a future that Lucy could live with. Some might not like it if they're really looking for a happily ever after kind of story. I on the other hand, feel it goes well. I'm interested to see what other stories this author comes up with in the future.
