I was not expecting to find such a witty, smart and constructive book when I actually got the book - I was expecting some nice poems that I can read and potentially some interpretation of those. But inside I found a revolutionary approach of poetry - why and how can poetry influence in a positive fashion our lives - the author had the courage to express his view in writing. And his view turned out to be a very interesting read that I enjoyed from the first page to the last.

and happy if we give it a chance

For those of us who yearn for a kinder, gentler, more civil world, Joe Sottile offers an enticing argument that poetry might just be a possible solution. Joe was a teacher for 33 years. He knows kids, and understands how hard they struggle with feelings of anger, loneliness, and sadness. He has witnessed firsthand the power of the written word in helping kids express themselves, as well as its power to inspire and uplift not just kids but all of us.
This book might just change the way you view the world and life itself. It is fillled with memorable stories from Joe's vast years of teaching experience and reveals Joe's vision of how poetry can make us all more empathetic, thoughtful, and happy if we give it a chance. I think it will leave many of us with a deeper appreciation of poetry that we might have had as kids, but may have forgotten as we immersed ourselves in today's hectic, fast-paced world.
Why Poetry Can Save The Planet is very readable, entertaining, and enjoyable in my opinion.

An Unexpected Delight!

This is a book for anyone who appreciates poetry, but it is especially for those of us who wonder how ANYONE can appreciate poetry. As one who was forced to memorize the sonnets of Shakespeare and the heroic couplets of Chaucer in college, I couldn't get away from those vile, torturous verses fast enough once I’d served my sentence in a required English Lit class. It was, therefore, with my tongue planted firmly into my cheek that I opened the sample pages of a book called "Why Poetry Can Save the Planet."
The writing was immediately welcoming and humorous rather than the stuffy and indecipherable babble that I usually associate with poetry. Author Joe Sottile writes warmly and with a sharp wit as he presents his case. He immediately states that this isn't a scholarly perspective on poetry and that he, too, was once among the "others" who just didn't "get" poetry. I was intrigued.
What followed was an entertaining, intelligent, and well-written romp through Sottile’s evolution as a lover of poetry that is inspiring, cute, and just plain fun. It did not surprise me to discover that Mr. Sottile is a teacher as well as a writer. If he had been my teacher, perhaps I wouldn't have spent the past three decades hoping that poetry would suffer the same ride into oblivion as disco and Sea Monkeys.
