Gr 7 Up—With its light page count and atmospheric illustrations by Doyle, illustrator of Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle (Scholastic) covers, Theule's short work could easily be mistaken for a hi-lo (high interest-low reading level) novel, aimed at reluctant readers. While there's certainly lots of interest there, and the short story format helps to sustain that interest, this title has sophisticated themes and artwork that could appeal to a wide range of teens. The stories, while not necessarily interconnected, all take place during the same time period on the same farm, with the same characters being referenced in multiple stories. Bones's father, the old farmer Bald, has died, and that sets in motion the events of the various stories. Readers meet a wide-eyed mouse who endeavors to confess his feelings to the one he loves; a group of pigs who must have their hooves made into soup; and the titular characters, Fat and Bones, who hate each other for some unknown reason. All of the stories are about relationships, whether that is of enemies, friends, or lovers. The themes of tension and choices are not heavy-handed, and the artwork sustain the dark, slightly sinister mood. Each illustration looks like it was borne from a splash of paint, and has an abstract quality, yet isn't too difficult to comprehend. About the Author
Having recently returned to the US after living six years in China, Larissa Theule resides in Pasadena, CA, with her family and dog. Once a barista, a billing assistant, and a high school teacher, she now devotes her time to writing stories and growing a rambling garden, where no fairies have been sighted—at least not yet. Fat & Bones is her first book.

This is the strange tale of Fat and bones and the amazing butterfly effect that whirls around the farm ...

Bald, the old farmer, was dead, dead, dead. No matter to Fat because there was no love lost between them, like ever. Bones, Bald’s son, simply dug a hole and *plop,* threw the old man in. Mrs. Bald was all upset, but crying wouldn’t get her anywhere with her son, Bones. Bones simply couldn’t see what the fuss was all about. Now Fat was a fairy without wings, but plenty of hatred to wing around. He hated that Bones just as much as he hated his father. Fat was going to brew up a “Sunflower Skeleton Fat Eraser” and flatten that Bones into nothingness.
Things don’t often go as planned and soon the Mrs. Bald was lying on the floor in a puddle of herself. Foiled again as they say. Bones had escaped Fat’s clutches, but it was only a matter of time before he got him. Maybe. In the meantime, Bones had been trying his best to whack down Fat’s habitat, a tree, but in his frenzy of hate accidentally chopped off the cat’s tail. It was a tale of hate for sure, but who would come out on top?
No doubt Fat was going to get that Bones, but in the meantime Mrs. Bald remained an inconvenient puddle with floating eyeballs. Fat was “brewing a batch of Bluebell Blindness Inducer.” Surely that should do the trick, but he needed some spider blood and Priscilla Mae would be his donor. Leonard Grey III, a spider who wrote “god-awful poetry” just couldn’t let Priscilla Mae die just so Fat could get back at Bones. Would he be able to save her or die for his efforts?
This is the strange tale of Fat and bones and the amazing butterfly effect that whirls around the farm. The interconnected tales in this story are seemingly simple, but in fact are quite complex. This book is amazingly well-written, but at first glance (or read) each story is just that, a story. Not so because each one of these character’s lives is somehow impacted by what the other has done or is doing. It can be read just as a simple set or stories or as a study of how we can impact each other. ‘Twas a simple sneeze that changed their lives or was it that Hatfield and McCoy feud going down on the farm? You’ll just have to read these stories to find out if the butterfly effect was the cause of all the messed up dealings on the now deceased Mr. Bald’s farm.

Original, surprising and drop dead gorgeous!

This is the kind of book that defines why I LOVE reading. Original, surprising, it grabs the fairie tale genre by the horns and flips it on its butt, and then kicks butt In the wake of Farmer Bald’s recent death, gnarly local faerie Fat and Bald’s nasty son Bones are at war over who will rule the farm roost. As they battle in strange and strangely humorous ways, the action follows them and the rest of the farm and farm creatures (inc. some plants) as they go about their own brand of both whimsical and gruesome business. Fresh twists and turns are what I came to expect from this cycle of stories, and the illustrations are intriguing and deeply realized. To be able to study repeatedly one particular imagining of a female spider’s face alone makes this book worth owning and treasuring. Bravo Team Theule and Doyle. I’m not sure who the “targeted” audience is for this delightfully creepy book, so I guess I’ll settle on everyone!

Larissa Theule provides a wonderful, whimsical, adventure! Great for reading to your kids, or for your kids to read on their own. A wonderful book for adults like me who want to delve into something a bit different from my usual fare.
