Review
This is sword-and-sorcery adventure at its finest, well-written, well-paced, and with a strong world behind it ... Shara and the Haunted Village could stand proudly beside many of the classics of the genre; in particular, it reminded me strongly of some of Fritz Leiber's "Fafhrd and Grey Mouser" adventures.
-- Ryk E. Spoor, author of Phoenix Rising

A wonderful grown-up fairytale and a great escape. ... Immerse yourself in a fantasy that will keep you thinking about the characters long after you are done.
-- Connie J. Jasperson, author of Tower of Bones

Enjoyable from first page to last!
By Paul Weiss
Shara, a very hungry, very unemployed and singularly impoverished seamstress, has been offered an almost unimaginable amount of money. All she has to do is lead a dashing but definitely intriguing pair of rogues - D'Arbignal, a diminutive swordsman and bodyguard, spokesman and negotiator for the much more intimidating man mountain, Gianelli - to the haunted village. That Shara has only the vaguest childhood recollection of the village is beside the point. The siren call of the money and the adventure is irresistible!

In an all too brief novella, Mr Getzin has penned a story that is extraordinarily difficult to pin down. At once fantasy, young adult, comedy and light-hearted romance with a touch of horror, science fiction and, believe it or not, even mathematical topology, SHARA AND THE HAUNTED VILLAGE qualifies as a page turner from the opening paragraph.

Unlike Dickens, for example, who could write page upon page of breathtakingly detailed descriptive narrative putting the most complete picture of a character into the reader's mind's eye, Getzin wasted not so much as a single word in the effort. "Show ... don't tell" rules the day. Merely by being themselves, by doing what comes naturally to them, by participating in Getzin's imaginative story line, the protagonists reveal their characters. That mind's eye picture might come one piece at a time but, be assured, it is no less complete and no less compelling than Dickens' best efforts. D'Arbignal, the lovable, youthful, picaresque but romantically ham-handed swordsman whose antics seem modeled on Michael York's movie version of D'Artagnan is brilliant. Perleanane, the novella's meanie, manages to be at once demonic and comedic - a bizarre combination of Jabba the Hut, Tammy Faye Bakker and Gollum. I'm not kidding ... you have to read it to believe it.

Even vulgarity - the standard F-word - is used so sparingly that its effectiveness is really quite stunning.

Count me impressed. I'm looking forward to more of Mr Getzin's work and I'm definitely heading back in time to check out some of his earlier efforts.

Well-done Sword and Sorcery with a twist...
By Ryk E. Spoor
I would prefer to give this 4.5 stars, but as several people have done 5 star reviews I'll give it a 4, though it deserves more. Alas that Amazon doesn't allow halves.

In _Shara and the Haunted Village_, we're given our protagonist, the young woman Shara whose main talent is being an excellent seamstress. Unfortunately, times have not been good for seamstresses and she's been reduced to poverty, unsure how, or even IF, she'll be able to make a living. She could sell her sewing kit... but that would mean she no longer has the tools to ply her trade at all.

And then a sudden opportunity arrives: the apparent fop and dandy, D'Arbignal, who claims to be the greatest swordsman in the world, offers her *gold* -- not coppers, not silvers, but *gold*, enough to live on not for weeks or months but even years -- to show him and his menacing, mysterious Gianelli the way to a deserted village which may also be haunted or cursed... a village that only Shara truly knows how to find, because she had the misfortune to find it once before.

I won't spoiler any more of this long story (not quite a novel -- a novella, at slightly less than 30,000 words) for the reader, because the twists and turns of the story are well worth finding on their own. Suffice it to say that even Shara's talents at sewing turn out to be valuable during an adventure which might seem far too dangerous for such pedestrian skills.

This is sword-and-sorcery adventure at its finest, well-written, well-paced, and with a strong world behind it; those who read Jeff's _Prince of Bryanae_ will recognize that this takes place somewhere in the same world.

_Shara and the Haunted Village_ could stand proudly beside many of the classics of the genre; in particular, it reminded me strongly of some of Fritz Leiber's "Fafhrd and Grey Mouser" adventures.

It is obvious from the story that there are many more adventures in store for D'Arbignal... but I would hope perhaps one day to hear more about Shara, as well.

An enveloping and bewitching story
By Deborah Newhouse
This was a fantastic read and an enveloping plot. Getzin brings the characters truly to life - the dialogue is worthy of a screenplay. I could see this easily as a movie. The bar owner and Shara are sympathetic characters with truly admirable personalities. Her adventure companions provide suspense, as their purpose - good or evil - remains in the balance.
