The Trees are all Young on Garrison Hill: A Personal Memoir Featuring the Battle of KOHIMA, by Gordon Graham

The Trees are all Young on Garrison Hill: A Personal Memoir featuring the Battle of Kohima, is a tautly-written autobiography, taking the reader on a journey from a quiet respectable Scottish boyhood to the sudden brutality of jungle warfare in Assam and Burma, and afterwards through the twilight of Empire in India, where Gordon Graham lived for ten years after the war.

Garrison Hill was the epicentre of one of the fiercest and most strategically vital battles of World War II. Overlooking Kohima, a town in the Naga hills of North East India, Garrison Hill was until 1944 a tranquil tree-clad enclave surrounding the Commissioner’s bungalow and tennis court. Suddenly in April 1994, it became the scene of intensive close-quarter combat between a Japanese force attempting to invade India and a British division thrust into action to repel it.

Treating his early life and his life after the war the author turns what could have been just another war memoir into a very personal autobiography. This memoir ranges from his first love and political shenanigans as an undergraduate in Scotland through searing war incidents, such as rescuing the wounded in the battlefield or holding the hand of a dying comrade under fire, and through his romantic marriage and tragic in bereavement in Bombay, city of his vanished dreams.

Visiting Japan as part of his business life as a publisher in New York and London, the author sought out and dined cordially with Japanese veterans who had fought at Kohima, and later, as one of a small number of British veterans seeking reconciliation, entertained visiting Japanese veterans at his home. One such party finished with a sing-song, and a rendering of Auld Lang Syne in Japanese. When you can laugh and sing and cry a little with your former enemies, he writes, you know the war is really over.

The denouement of the book describes the formation of the Kohima Educational Trust, a charity founded by the author after the 60th Anniversary of the battle to fulfill the British soldiers' debt of honour to the Naga people who fought alongside them in 1944. The theme of the book is that memory is not enough: What we do with memory is what matters.

The Battle of Kohima/Imphal has been voted Britain's greatest battle.

“The book is riveting. It’s also a very personal voice – revealing, droll, with a finely balanced subjectivity.”

"One of the most moving books I have ever read ... my sincere congratulations on writing and publishing this most important historical record."

“I am touched by the beautiful writing. The book is so well conceived and balanced. Together with intensely personal observations, it provides an astonishing amount of information. There is an immediacy about it, from Preface to the Epilogue.”

"A masterpiece ... should become mandatory reading for Sandhurst cadets and all aspiring military youths."

“I congratulate you on your marvellous book. I was full of admiration for the way you were able to achieve such an air of serenity in spite of all the tragedy that befell you personally and that struck your regimental colleagues. I also admired your very modest account of your own exploits ... few people would have been so reticent.”

war in Burma Imphal Kohima
By Guido Weinreb
probably more books have been written on WWII than on any other war Some books are written by historians. Some books or diaries by those who directed the war effort. Such books can be excellent, but they are detached from the sweat and toil of the war and lack any feeling of intimacy and of participation. This is a different genre - an intricate autobiography by an infantry officer covering some of the events on the Burmese Front
including the savage and decisive battle of Imphal-Kohima. Suddely one is there, in the jungle, danger lurking all around. Here you are actually living and breathing the war, dealing with your and your friends' survival. You there in the thick of it ,facing mortal dangers not knowing that this day may be your last. Major Grahan has written a gripping account of a theatre of wa, explored relatively llittle, and this account is highly recommended to those who wish to understand more about the war against the Japanese.
