A very RECOMMENDED short story to enjoy your spare time!

From the first page, I knew I'm gonna love this flash fiction! The opening made me wondering where the story would goes, and the story went AMAZING!

I had a fast reading, enjoying the story, and I wish there were more pages. When I read Revolting Youth eps 1,my heart beated fast just like Luko's. Phew, it was a hard moment seeing your father and best friend being tortured. Yeah, I hate Mr. Hujjat as well, how could a teacher be so cruel?

I like the twists. The ending of this episode surprised me! When I reached the last paragraphs, I was like, "Wait, I knew these names. Yes! They are characters from ..."
Wew, then I read the Author's Note and it is clear now. I eager to know what happens next! Good job for the Author! :)

When I started reading this short story I was instantly hooked. The descriptions that are given throughout are fantastic and although I want to tell you more about this book I feel this would spoil it for you.

The author has managed to describe the feelings of the young man and what he is going through during a time of war fantastically. This has provoked thoughts for me already of how lucky we are and what these children and families go through on a daily basis. It had me thinking that their choices are more for survival and not actually what they really want, but they are forced to make these decision through fear.

This is an author I will be following and really can't wait for more books. It's been a while since I have read such a gripping series of books from one author and H J Lawson has managed to switch me back to reading.

It is really killing me not telling more of the story but as I said I wouldn't want to spoil the plot for you.

I hope you give this book a read and I'm sure you will in no way be disappointed.

If you haven't read any of her books... I mean, what are you waiting for??

This is one of those short stories that are too short because they make you think it is the beginning of an incredible novel, but then it ends and leaves you wanting more... Yeah, the deception...

But please, don't misunderstand me because I really liked it. The narration is great and it has a lot of action and the characters were very well constructed.

Something that I really loved is the reference to characters from another book by this author -wich I won't say because of the spoilers- and I'm quite sure if you have enjoyed her previous books, you'll love this short story too.

But if you haven't read any of her books... I mean, what are you waiting for??

Mr. Jones labors in the fields of a tobacco plantation in Cuba. Despite being ridiculously old, he recently learned English from a Guantanamo escapee, which skill he used to scrawl out this novel on discarded leaves. A strong first novel

The debut novel of Señor Jones is an enjoyable and rollicking journey for the reader as they follow the hapless Renly on his journey out into the world beyond his lonely computer in MIT. The narrative flows well throughout as Renly explores the world of the ghosts and the broader universe of cyber entities created within human software systems. The protagonist’s painful-to-observe awkwardness leads the reader through a well-paced narrative that keeps you turning the page whilst giving you insights into the metaphysics of being a sentient and soul-possessing creature born of advanced computing and the societal evolution that emerges as a result. I particularly enjoyed the historical backstory of this world, echoes of which rattle through Renly’s times and underpin key developments in the story.
There are a few weaknesses: Renly is well-drawn but hard to sympathize with; many of the characters come across as stereotypes that don’t quite ring true if they are trying to emulate authentic humans they have observed in the real world; I was unclear why Renly’s relatives would go to such lengths (& risks) to help him when he was obviously such a liability to their entire world.
But these are relatively minor quibbles in what is a strong first novel from this new writer: highly imaginative, well-paced and insightful into the processes of how cyber societies might evolve and the challenges for individuals within those societies.

I want more! Looking forward to Volume 2

Imagine a world where digital beings have French names and family histories as rich as those of Colonial Monarchs. Now imagine what happens when one of these so-called Ghosts, a young byte named Renly de la Gloire, rebels against the hardwired order of his "Etherworld" and ventures out into forbidden territory. Renly's internal dialogue pulls you in and lulls you into caring about him despite his painful naiveté and poor discernment. I don't want to give away the whole story here, but I will say that Ghosts is cleverly conceived, a bit geeky, and yet accessible to us all. Tobacco Jones has a signature voice, distinctly modern, informal, and vibrant. He may shape up to be a literary hero to geeks everywhere, following in the footsteps of legends such as - dare I say it - Neal Stephenson. There, I said it.

This volume takes a close look at the most popular and influential period of the great American modernist painter Marsden Hartley―his Berlin years, during which he produced his pioneering "German Officer" portraits and a series of works that occupy a unique zone between abstraction and figuration. During a brief stint in Paris, Hartley met and fell in love with a Prussian officer, and early in 1913 he followed the officer to Berlin. When war broke out the officer was called up, and was killed in action in October 1914. Mourning his loss, Hartley created an astounding series of paintings that abstracted components of the officer's uniform, retaining their military symbolism and patterns. Nearly a half-century later, this combination of bright color and composition with popular signage, informed by the coding of gay culture, was to make a strong impact on Pop artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Indiana. In this volume, approximately 25 of the artist's works from these years (1913–15) reveal the impact of World War I and elucidate the artist's appropriation of military symbols and Native American motifs. Also included are an illustrated chronology and a wealth of archival material that conveys the historical moment in which these works were made. Their presentation in Los Angeles marks the first focused exhibition of Hartley's Berlin paintings in the US since they were created.
Marsden Hartley was born in Lewiston, Maine, in 1877. After studying at the Cleveland School of Art he won a scholarship to study in New York, where he became one of the first American artists to adopt the discoveries of Picasso, Kandinsky and Klee. His first solo exhibition was held at Alfred Stieglitz's legendary 291 gallery. In 1912 he moved to Paris and was welcomed into the circle of Gertrude Stein. After extensive travels, in the 1930s Hartley returned to Maine, where he died in 1943.

About the Author
Ilene Susan Fort is the Gail and John Liebes Curator of American Art at LACMA, and has been with the museum since 1983. A leading scholar in her field, Dr. Fort has organized landmark exhibitions and published numerous articles, catalogues, and books. At LACMA, she curated and wrote the accompanying catalogues for "The Flag Paintings of Childe Hassam" (1986); " American Paintings in Southern California Collections" (1996); "Made in California" (with Stephanie Barron and Sheri Bernstein) (2000-2001); "Manly Pursuit: The Sporting Images of Thomas Eakins" (2010); and most recently "In Wonderland."

This is a beautiful small catalogue to go with the great exhibitions in Berlin and LA. The reproductions are very vivid and correct and the text is both informative and well written (not always the case with museum catalogues). A well written short story

Cold is a beautifully written story with a highly engaging narration from beginning to the end. The setting and the relaxed style of dialogues gave the story a strong sense of reality, which I really enjoyed. Though I felt the story was a bit dragging at first, I was taken by Larson’s flawless writing style. Patiently, I read through the detailed backgrounds of the characters and their different circumstances, just to be disappointed with the lack of action. I expected a twist or surprise, especially with different events developing from every angle, but that didn’t happen. If only Larson executed the revenge in the same way she did the life of Michael and Julia after the death of their mother, this would have been a five star for me. Larson does a great job developing the characters and suspense, but the actual revenge is not as intense as I expected. A bone-chilling story? Hmm, maybe for those with a faint heart. However, Cold would be perfect for those who prefer a well written easy read on a lazy day. Despite the weak ending, I enjoyed reading Cold.

Cosy 'ish' ghost story

Well written, this somewhat 'cosy' ghost story, is filled with believable characters, all of which I felt some degree of sympathy for, even the bad guy.
The most disturbing event occurs in the first few pages, seen through the eyes of a twelve year old boy, and would probably be ok for a mature child of that age to read as only the aftermath of violence is witnessed.
It was interesting to see how a brother and sister dealt with the murder of their mother in different ways. One focusing on it almost constantly, the other trying to shut it out but suffering equally due to being unable to commit to a relationship for fear of losing a loved one again.
The romances that eventually arise for the brother and sister provide a new step for both of them, after years of emotional isolation. For me, the ghostly aspect was comforting, the murdered mother watching over her children, rather than any sense of fear. As the revenge aspect was part of the title, I expected/hoped for significantly more suspense as the bad guy neared his end, but this almost seemed a relief for the murderer, and was accomplished without significant drama. His suffering seemed to come from hiding out, drinking and womanising for the intervening twenty years.
Apart from the very occasional f bomb, perhaps two or three in the whole book, a single mildly graphic sex scene, and a fairly sanitised scene of domestic violence, all other 'adult' material is of the fade to black variety which makes this book suitable for a wide audience. I was hoping for a little 'more' but that is my personal preference, and not a reflection on the clear skill of the author to craft a story.

I really enjoyed this book. It was quite suspenseful from one character to another. My only precaution is that you had better dress warm because the title is very fitting for the book. Enjoy!

A spectacular first novel. Walls by R.T. Donlon is a harrowing tale of love, pereseverence, and horror all set against the back drop of a zombie apocalypse. Mainly set in Boston, this book takes a different spin on the Zombie tale, confining the story to a man searching desperately for his wife in Boston. Readers will seriously enjoy this book. The prose almost feels like a movie playing in your head, and boy is it a fun one. R.T. Donlon will do great things if he keeps it up. Please read.
