About the Author
Paul J. Joseph is an independent film maker as well as a story teller through writing. One of his recent films has been featured in the 2010 Ava Gardner Independent Film Festival. He has been teaching mass communication courses at a college level for 17 years, and currently works at a small private university in North Carolina. He lives with his wife Tyreese, his son Ian, a mother in law, and three cats. Paul Joseph's first love has been and always will be science fiction. He looks for ideas that are based on plausible trends in technology, both good and bad. He is particularly interested in space travel and time travel, which can include alternate realities and paradoxes. He tends to avoid fantasy and magic. So, if you are looking for elves and fairies, this is not your guy. On the other hand, ESP and other observable phenomena may well be fair game.

disturbing Sci fi

A small space vessel from earth has gone through the first discovered space fold. They have discovered a viable planet. After their scout fails to return from "new Ontario", the captain and one crew member go to the surface to find him. The horrific labor camps of the resident aliens horrifies and sickens them yes they do find their scout. No he is far from alright. In the week he has been missing, his mind has been totally altered to enjoy pain, smelly awful living conditions, and eating slop. His memory of his earth life is buried. As the story unfolds greater horrors are revealed about the planets masters. The person crew of the space ship face difficult decisions that can effect Earth. This is a well written imaginative novel that will hold your interest and disturb you.

Could it be possible that a society under bondage would be filled with people who enjoy that bondage? Would they consider brutality such a part of their ordinary lives that they find it just and merciful? This novel is like *Brave New World* taken to the next level. How do you rescue a planet in which people may not want to be rescued? This is the fascinating part of this novel, that "Stockholm Syndrome" might be writ large across an enslaved society as a whole. There is action and suspense, and for the hardcore or softcore science fiction fan, this will be a good read.
The major issue I have is that the prose is awkward and the characters are a bit wooden. Dialogue is stilted and trite at times, especially at the beginning of the novel. While there are parts that have fine imagery, other parts overly depend on adjectives, and the use of adjectives to create images is possible, but usually one sees this in brilliant writers such as Lovecraft or Shirley Jackson. Those problems are the reason for the three stars, but I think most science fiction fans will be able to enter the action and feel the suspense sufficiently to see past the defects.

A Sci-Fi Fan Must Read

Very well written suspenseful sci-fi page turner. I found this book impossible to put down. The story, set in the near future starts out with a small crew of scientists and engineers orbiting an alien planet which appears to have suffered an apocalypse. A recon turns into a dramatic search and rescue mission which opens an entire Pandora's Box of dangers and unknowns. Smart and suspenseful with some very interesting turn of events as humans find the wrong place at the wrong time.
