fun and extremely black Pulp joy-ride

This is a line spoken early on by Rich Brown, the ne'er-do-well narrator of Phil Beloin's latest "Revenge is a Redhead" and Beloin seems hell-bent on examining all of the possibilities in his book.
"Revenge is a Redhead" is a fast, fun and extremely black Pulp joy-ride. Not a word is wasted in this twisted tale. All of the Pulp Noir bases are covered: Ultra violence and action, crisp dialogue and parade of characters and freaks. Highly recommended. Sit down for a couple of hours with a cheap bottle of bourbon, take up smoking and enjoy an evening with "Revenge is a Redhead".

A Gritty, Dirty, Action-Filled Novella

This book is basically a novella-size voyage into the underbelly of society. It is filled with all the classic pulp elements, including a stripper/prostitute with a heart of gold, an oversized bouncer, a preacher, men who lose their eyes, women tied to crosses, molotov cocktails, and a down-and-out hero who has been thrown out of his home and hasn't enough cash left to even pay for a lap dance. Although all the action seems to take place on a few short blocks, it is a story chock full of action from beginning to end with bodies strewn just about everywhere. Beloin deftly takes what others could have turned into a ridiculous mess and makes a fun, action packed extravaganza out of it. This book is not for those looking for fairy tales about winged fairies and princesses. But, for those looking for something a little more gritty and street hardened, this might be your ticket.

A Wild Ride

Revenge is a Redhead solidifies Phil Beloin Jr.'s place in the pantheon of contemporary crime writers. Revenge brims with killers, drug dealers, dirty cops and dirtier homeless shelter workers, a degenerate doctor, and a whore with a heart of gold, all revolving around a hapless street urchin who just wants a hot meal, a warm bed, and to pop his cherry. But in this story, as in all good noirs, up is down, right is wrong, and the good have never been so bad.
Beloin is expert at rendering characters who, in another writer's hands, might be boilerplate. Revenge is a Redhead is anything but, shot through with wild scenes full of great dialogue and the author's spot-on social commentary. It's a fun, sick read. Is there higher praise? I think not.
