More entertaining, pulp sci-fi fun!
By Barloq
In a lot of ways, Prince of Suck is a great way to round out the Hard Luck Hank trilogy (yes, that is now a thing). Steven Campbell wisely decides to go all-in with the situation the characters and Colmarians found themselves in at the end of Basketful of Crap, and the novel really benefits from the unified continuity. On a related note, Prince of Suck is a different, and far darker read than the previous two books. Hank's mutation is literally killing him (making his seeming invulnerability a drawback was an inspired move). He's getting old, desperate and is running out of time to save Belvaille. He's also a far more violent character in his old age, but this fits the character progression very well, as Belvaille around him is filled with utter chaos. And yet, the novel features glimmers of hope which make the galaxy's uncertain future just a little more optimistic as long as Hank's around to sort things out.
Aside from that, the novel follows the usual Hank structure. The plot's largely a bunch of seemingly random events cobbled together until they come to a culmination in the end (although the ending goes by a bit too quickly). The humour is very much present. The novel's lighter on action, although this is probably because Hank is literally too slow to even fight now.
All in all, if you've read the previous Hank books, you basically owe it to yourself to pick up Prince of Suck.

Dark, but ultimately fulfilling!
By Anders Haywood
Overall, I thought this third outing of Hank's was pretty good. The author made some interesting choices in regards to the continuation of the series. The biggest of these is that, rather than pick up straight from the last book into a galactic civil war, we start 75 or so years after the end of the second novel.
Hank, the titular hero is now a pretty old man, with bad eyesight, increasingly bad heart attacks and a mutation that is crippling him. For all that, he is basically chief of police on a station that is massively over populated and being torn apart by gangs, corporations, religious cults and feral children.
The book has a much darker tone than the others, and a lot of the humour is very wry. For me, Delovoa was easily the funniest character of the book who has degenerated into a decadent old fop ( albeit one who is single handedly keeping Belvaille together ).
The book takes a massive change in tone about 2 / 3 of the way through into something much lighter ( by Belvaille standards ) and much more energetic. It actually reminded me of Terry Pratchett's Going Postal and Making Money books in that frantic, creative, energy and innovation.
One very different aspect is the use of links to .gifs that link to some very interesting and very unique little animations. In the printed novel, the links are printed so paper readers don't miss out. I loved this special and singular addition that added alot to my love of this series.
All in all, this was a great book that took me to some really unexpected places. And while it isn't strictly necessary to have read the previous books, as all is explained, it would be helpful as this series is a huge standout from other Sci-fi series.

Another fun romp with Hank
By Amazon Customer
I absolutely love the Hard Luck Hank series. He's such a wonderful, modest, self-effacing hero. Hank makes mistakes but owns up to them, doing what he can to protect his beloved Belvaille. The book was kind of slow to take off, because the day-to-day life of Hank mostly involves settling minor disputes, but the ending is worth it and that inimitable Hank sense of humor was present throughout. Some of my favorite parts were his wry asides when he faced seemingly intractable foes or when he thought he was dying of a heart attack and was getting bored with waiting. A super nifty new addition: animated gifs of the characters. It was fun seeing the author's conception of various HLH entities. Looking forward to the next one in the series.
